After facing significant flight disruptions recently, Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan on Thursday told the airline staff that the "worst is behind us" and operations have already stabilised.
Pilot woes have forced the Tata Group airline to temporarily cut down capacity by 10 per cent or 25-30 flights daily.
While acknowledging that things should have been planned better, Kannan said it has been a "learning experience".
He also said it has been a challenging start to the new financial year and the airline faced significant operational disruption from March 31 to April 2.
"The anxiety and frustration felt by our customers was matched in even measure to the pain that all of us felt in seeing our much-loved brand drawing negative commentary from various quarters... I assure you that the worst is behind us, and we have already stabilised our operations, with our on-time performance (OTP) increasing to 89 per cent on 9 April 2024 (second highest among all Indian airlines)," he said in a message to the staff.
The full-service carrier has around 6,500 people, including about 1,000 pilots.
In the wake of the disruptions, the top management of the airline had held a virtual meeting with the pilots. One of the reasons for the disruptions was also that some section of pilots reporting sick to protest against the new contract that will result in pay revision.
According to Kannan, there were a multitude of reasons for the disruptions, including ATC delays, bird hits, and maintenance activities early last month.
"We were stretched in our pilot rosters and there was not enough resilience to withstand injects that we would otherwise have weathered. We could and should have planned better, and this has been a learning experience for us which we will review thoroughly," the Vistara chief said.
Most of the cancellations were in the domestic network and the carrier is working on plans for May and beyond.
"While the events of the last week may seem like a setback, the hallmark of our organisation has always been that we have bounced back from tough situations ' and emerged stronger.
"... I trust each of you to continue to put in all efforts to ensure that we do not let our brand, and our customer, down," Kannan said.

Vistara on Sunday announced that the airline will be reducing the flight operation by 10% which is equivalent to about 25, 30 flights per day to ease the pressure on pilots. This comes as Vistara is hit by flight delays and cancellation for the past few days.&nbsp;
"This will take us back to the same level of flight operations as at the end of February 2024, and provide the much-needed resilience and buffer in the rosters,&rdquo; an airline spokesperson said in a statement. "We are carefully scaling back our operations by around 25-30 flights per day, i.e. roughly 10% of the capacity we were operating".
"All the affected passengers have already been re-accommodated on other flights, as applicable," it added.

The airline had initially planned to operate over 300 flights daily in the summer schedule commencing March 31. The reduction will primarily affect the domestic network and the airline has assured that &nbsp;affected passengers have been re-accommodated on alternative flights as necessary, with reported improvements in on-time performance.
The announcement comes a day after the crisis-hit airline's CEO said that 98% of its pilots have signed the new contracts with the revised salary structure. The disruptions had occured after which several of pilots had called in sick protesting the new salary structure.

"We confirm that we have had a number of flight cancellations and unavoidable delays in the last few days due to various operational reasons," said the Vistara spokesperson. &nbsp;
"Our teams are tirelessly working to stabilizing the situation. We regret the inconvenience caused to our valued customers due to these disruptions," the spokesperson added.

A Vistara flight returned to Bengaluru without landing at the Dabolim Airport in Goa after a stray dog was spotted on the runway by the Air Traffic Controller, a senior official said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon, he said.
The pilot was asked to &ldquo;hold for sometime&rdquo; as a stray dog was spotted on the runway of the Dabolim Airport but &ldquo;he preferred to return to Bengaluru,&rdquo; Goa airport's director SVT Dhanamjaya Rao told PTI.
The Dabolim Airport in Goa is part of the Navy's INS Hansa base.
The Vistara flight UK 881 left from the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru at 12.55 pm on Monday and returned at 3.05 pm, sources said.
The flight again took off from Bengaluru at 4.55 pm and reached Goa at 6.15 pm, they said.
On Monday, Vistara in a post on X said, &ldquo;Flight UK881 from Bengaluru to Goa (BLR-GOI) has been diverted to Bengaluru due to runway restriction at Goa (GOI) airport and is expected to arrive in Bengaluru at 1505 hrs.&rdquo;
In another post after two hours, it said, &ldquo;Flight UK881 which was diverted to Bengaluru has departed from Bengaluru at 1655 hours and is expected to arrive in Goa at 1815 hours.&rdquo; Rao said once in a while there are instances of a stray dog entering the runway but the area is cleared immediately by the ground staff. &ldquo;This is the first such incident in my tenure of last one-and-a-half years,&rdquo; he added.

The partnership allows Air India's passengers to travel seamlessly on Vistara's route network to and from over 80 points across Air India's extensive domestic and global network, the airline said in a statement.
Air India has over 100 similar agreements and close to 50 through check-in agreements with partner airlines globally, such as Lufthansa, United Airlines, Air Canada, and Singapore Airlines, among others.
The scope of the agreement between Air India and Vistara includes Inter Airline Through Check-in (IATCI) implementation, which enables passengers to receive their boarding passes at the first point of departure for all the travel sectors on a single ticket, and have their baggage checked-in through to their final destinations, Air India said.
Air India and Vistara operate at the same terminals at most major airports in the country.

Full service carrier Vistara on Monday said it reported a profit for the first time since inception in the three months ended December 2022.
Without disclosing the exact profit figure in the December quarter, the airline said it crossed the USD 1 billion revenue mark and remained EBITDA positive in the current fiscal year.
EBITDA refers to Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation.
"For the first time since inception, the airline reported a net profit (excluding unrealised foreign currency loss and non-operating income) for the quarter ended December 2022," it said in a release.
A joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, the airline started operations on January 9, 2015, and currently has a fleet of 52 planes.
Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan said with significant network and fleet expansion and sustained growth over the last few months, 2022 has been a phenomenal year for Vistara in terms of operational and financial performance.
"Each member of the Vistara family is incredibly proud of our collective achievements in an extremely challenging business environment that included the third wave of pandemic and escalating costs. We are now aiming for higher goals as we enter the next phase of our growth journey," he said.

In a release, SIA said Vistara and Air India would be merged, and it would also be investing Rs 2,058.5 crore in Air India as part of the transaction.
"This would give SIA a 25.1 per cent stake in an enlarged Air India group with a significant presence in all key market segments.
SIA said it intends to fully fund this investment with its internal cash resources, which stood at 17.5 billion Singapore dollars as of September 30.
In a separate release, Tata group said that with the consolidation, Air India would be the country's leading domestic and international carrier with a combined fleet of 218 aircraft, "making it India's largest international carrier and second largest domestic carrier".
SIA and Tata Sons have also agreed to participate in additional capital injections, if required, to fund the growth and operations of the enlarged Air India in FY2022-23 and FY2023-24. &nbsp;"Based on SIA's 25.1 per cent stake post-completion, its share of any additional capital injection could be up to Rs 50,200 million (S$ 880 million, US$ 615 million), payable only after the completion of the merger," SIA said in the release.
The actual amount will depend on factors, including the progress of the enlarged Air India's business plan, and its access to other funding options. SIA intends to fully fund any additional capital injections with its internal cash resources, it added.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the merger of Vistara and Air India is an important milestone in the journey to make Air India a truly world-class airline.
"As part of the transformation, Air India is focusing on growing both its network and fleet, revamping its customer proposition, enhancing safety, reliability and on-time performance. We are excited with the opportunity of creating a strong Air India which would offer both full-service and low-cost service across domestic and international routes," he said.
Four airlines are part of the Tata group. They are Air India, Air India Express, AirAsia India and Vistara. Tata group acquired Air India and Air India Express in January this year.
Vistara started flying in January 2015. AirAsia India was launched in 2014, while Air India Express began operations back in 2005.
In October, Vistara was the second largest carrier with a domestic market share of 9.2 per cent behind IndiGo, which had a market share of 56.7 per cent.
During the same period, the domestic market share of Air India and AirAsia India stood at 9.2 per cent and 7.6 per cent, respectively.
In terms of On-Time Performance (OTP), Air India was on top at 90.8 per cent, followed by Vistara and AirAsia India, both at 89.1 per cent.
On October 13, SIA said it was in "confidential discussions" with Tata group to explore the possible merger of Vistara and Air India.
"The discussions seek to deepen the existing partnership between SIA and Tata, and may include a potential integration of Vistara and Air India," it had said in a filing to the Singapore Stock Exchange.
SIA Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong said that with this merger, SIA has an opportunity to deepen its relationship with Tata and participate directly in an exciting new growth phase in India's aviation market. &nbsp;"We will work together to support Air India's transformation, unlock its significant potential, and restore it to its position as a leading airline on the global stage," he added.

In a major move to make Air India the second largest airline in the country, Tata Sons have reportedly started the process to bring all its airlines under one umbrella of Air India.&nbsp;&nbsp;
With this consolidation process, all its airline entities &ndash; Vistara, AirAsia India and Air India Express will reportedly come under Air India.&nbsp;
According to a report in the Economic Times, Tata Sons has started this process after holding several rounds of discussions with Singapore Airlines (SIA). If the process gets executed as planned, Air India could become the second largest airline in the country, especially in terms of fleet and market share, as per the report.&nbsp;
Tata Sons will have a low-cost carrier and a full-service airline under Air India post this merger, which may take more than a year to start properly functioning under the umbrella firm.&nbsp;
The Tatas took over Air India and Air India Express in January. In October 2021, Tatas emerged as the winning bidder for loss-making Air India. It offered a bid of Rs 18,000 crore, comprising a cash payment of Rs 2,700 crore and taking over the carrier's debt worth Rs 15,300 crore.

According to a news report, possible integration of Vistara and Air India is being discussed in this conversation.

Singapore Airlines in a statement said that discussions with Tatas are ongoing and no definitive terms have been agreed upon between the parties.&nbsp;
According to reports, Tatas has a 51 per cent stake in Vistara and the rest is with Singapore Airlines (SIA). Tatas are also the owner of Air India and can invite another airline to buy a stake in the former national carrier, provided they hold a majority 51 per cent share.
The merger, which could take a year to complete, is part of a bigger consolidation drive by Tata Sons to save costs, create synergies by optimising aircraft utilisation and routes and increase market share to compete with IndiGo, India&rsquo;s largest airline with a market share of 59 per cent.

While a start has been made on the transformation plan, key challenges remain. Air India is the market leader on long international routes that go as far as the US. But, IndiGo is also planning to become a significant player in that segment. It would become a strong competitor for Air India on certain routes.

Even more cases of cracks in windshields, malfunctioning equipment, and radars not working. With 8 such cases in just 18 days, SpiceJet's bad streak has caused alarm among flight passengers.
The first case was reported on 19 June when a bird hit caused an engine fire in a Patna-to-Delhi flight. The plane had to do an emergency landing in Patna soon after take-off. On the same day, a Delhi-Jabalpur flight faced cabin pressurisation issues, and had to return.
Then, on 24 June, a fuselage door warning lit up in a Guwahati-Kolkata flight soon after take-off, and the journey was abandoned. The next day, the same issue occurred in a Patna-Guwahati flight, and the plane stopped midway in its take-off roll.
On 2 July, smoke was seen in a Delhi-Jabalpur flight while it was at an altitude of around 5,000 feet. The plane had to return to the national capital. Then, on 5 July, a Delhi-to-Dubai flight had to be diverted to Karachi in Pakistan due to a malfunctioning fuel indicator.
On the same day, a SpiceJet flight did an emergency landing in Mumbai due to cracks in its windshield at an altitude of 23,000 feet. Yet another incident took place on the same day, with a SpiceJet freighter aircraft headed to China returning to Kolkata as its weather radar was not working.
5 July was a scary day, with flights of other airlines also facing issues. A Vistara plane suffered engine failure after landing in Delhi from Bangkok. Also, an IndiGo Raipur-to-Indore flight had a problem of smoke in the cabin after landing.
India's aviation sector had seen a similar spate of incidents a few years ago. In 2018-19, engine failures plagued certain planes of IndiGo and GoAir. Airbus A320neo aircraft with Pratt & Whitney engines had faced technical difficulties. IndiGo reportedly saw over 20 instances of engine malfunctions over the course of a few months. In March 2018, India's civil aviation regulator DGCA had grounded over 10 such aircraft.
After the latest spate of incidents, the DGCA sent a show-cause notice to SpiceJet, saying that the airline failed to "establish safe, efficient, and reliable air services". Commenting on the notice, SpiceJet's CMD said that the incidents reported were minor in nature and not unique, but the airline will be "doubly careful".

The special flight departed Delhi International Airport on June 16 and arrived at Mumbai Airport. Vistara has said that it plans to operate more such flights in the coming days as their number of fully vaccinated staff increases.
The airline recently announced that it had got nearly 100% of its eligible employees vaccinated with at least their first doses. This included Vistara&rsquo;s airport and corporate staff, cabin crew and pilots. Vistara also said that they continue to ramp up efforts to ensure all eligible employees receive their second doses as well in time.
Operating fully vaccinated flights has picked up pace across the globe, with Qatar Airways operating world&rsquo;s first fully vaccinated flight back in April.
