Two-thirds of Democrats want to replace Biden with another nominee, after the debate raised questions about the 81-year-old's possible cognitive decline.

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has developed a six per cent lead over his Democratic rival incumbent Joe Biden with 80 percent saying that the current White House occupant is too old to run for a second term, according to a latest poll by The Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal said Trump's lead over Biden in a two-person matchup, 48 per cent to 42 per cent is the widest in Journal surveys dating to late 2021 and compares with a 2-point lead in February.
The new survey began interviewing voters two days after the debate with Trump that left Democrats panicked about the 81-year-old president's possible cognitive decline and their party&rsquo;s weakening election prospects in November, the daily reported.
According to the survey, Democrats show significant discontent with Biden as their nominee. Some 76 per cent say he is too old to run this year, or about the same share as Republicans who hold that view. Two-thirds of Democrats would replace Biden on the ballot with another nominee, it said.
Importantly, the survey found that Vice President Kamala Harris is non-popular among the respondents.
"Some 35 per cent viewed Harris favorably and 58 per cent unfavorably in the new survey, about the same as in February&rsquo;s poll and roughly in line with views of the president," The Wall Street Journal said.
"The new survey also includes warning signs for the Democratic Party as it tries this fall to retain control of the Senate and retake a majority in the House," it added.

Millions of Americans tune in for a clash taking place months earlier than usual -- the opening salvo in what promises to be a bruising summer of campaigning, in a deeply polarized country still scarred by the chaos and violence of the 2020 election.
With only two debates this election cycle and national polls showing the pair locked in the tightest of contests, the event at CNN headquarters in Atlanta takes on heightened significance.
For many voters, the choice between the 81-year-old Biden, the oldest ever incumbent, and the 78-year-old Trump, now a convicted felon, is an uninspiring one -- a dynamic both candidates need to counter.

An election-year roast of President Joe Biden before journalists, celebrities and politicians at the annual White House correspondents&rsquo; dinner Saturday butted up against growing public discord over the Israel-Hamas war, with protests outside the event condemning both Biden&rsquo;s handling of the conflict and the Western news&rsquo; media coverage of it.
Biden, like most of his predecessors, used the glitzy annual White House Correspondents&rsquo; Association banquet to jab at his rival, Donald Trump. He followed the jokes with solemn warnings about what he said would happen if Trump won the presidency again.
With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year&rsquo;s event. But speakers inside made only passing mention of the conflict despite some having to run a gauntlet of demonstrators. Biden&rsquo;s speech, which lasted around 10 minutes, made no mention of the ongoing war or the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
&ldquo;Shame on you!&rdquo; protesters draped in the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh cloth shouted, running after men in tuxedos and suits and women in long dresses who were holding clutch purses as guests hurried inside for the dinner.
Chants accused U.S. journalists of undercovering the war and misrepresenting it. &ldquo;Western media we see you, and all the horrors that you hide,&rdquo; crowds chanted at one point.
&nbsp; &nbsp; Other protesters lay sprawled motionless on the pavement, next to mock-ups of flak vests with &ldquo;press&rdquo; insignia.
Ralliers cried &ldquo;Free, free Palestine.&rdquo; They cheered when at one point someone inside the Washington Hilton &mdash; where the dinner has been held for decades &mdash; unfurled a Palestinian flag from a top-floor hotel window.
Criticism of the Biden administration&rsquo;s support for Israel&rsquo;s six-month-old military offensive in Gaza has spread through American college campuses, with students pitching encampments in an effort to force their universities to divest from Israel. Counterprotests back Israel&rsquo;s offensive and complain of antisemitism.
Biden&rsquo;s motorcade Saturday took an alternate route from the White House to the Washington Hilton than in previous years, largely avoiding the crowds of demonstrators.
Biden&rsquo;s speech before nearly 3,000 people was being followed by entertainer Colin Jost from &ldquo;Saturday Night Live.&rdquo; Academy Award winner Da&rsquo;Vine Joy Randolph, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm and Chris Pines were among other stars.
Kelly O&rsquo;Donnell, president of the correspondents&rsquo; association, opened the event by reminding the audience of the important work that journalists do but noting that the dinner is happening at &ldquo;a complex moment for our nation,&rdquo; and in a decisive election year.
O&rsquo;Donnell went on to list the scores of journalists who have been imprisoned across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich and Austin Tice. The families of those journalists were in attendance as they have been at previous dinners. She briefly mentioned journalists killed in the war between Israel and Hamas.
Biden began his roast with a direct focus on Trump, calling him &ldquo;sleepy Don,&rdquo; in reference to a nickname Trump had given the president previously. He went on to note that despite being similar in age, the two presidential hopefuls have little else in common.
&ldquo;My vice president actually endorses me,&rdquo; Biden said. Former Vice President Mike Pence has refused to endorse Trump&rsquo;s reelection bid.
The president made a grim speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first term. &ldquo;We have to take this serious &mdash; eight years ago we could have written it off as &lsquo;Trump talk&rsquo; but not after January 6,&rdquo; Biden told the audience, referring to the supporters of Trump who stormed the Capitol after Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election.
Law enforcement, including the Secret Service, have instituted extra street closures and other measures to ensure what Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said would be the &ldquo;highest levels of safety and security for attendees.&rdquo;
The agency was working with Washington police to protect demonstrators&rsquo; right to assemble, Guglielmi said. However, &ldquo;we will remain intolerant to any violent or destructive behavior.&rdquo;
Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel&rsquo;s military since the war began in October.
More than two dozen journalists in Gaza wrote a letter last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether.
&ldquo;The toll exacted on us for merely fulfilling our journalistic duties is staggering,&rdquo; the letter states. &ldquo;We are subjected to detentions, interrogations, and torture by the Israeli military, all for the &lsquo;crime&rsquo; of journalistic integrity.&rdquo;
One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents&rsquo; Association &mdash; which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president &mdash; largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists. WHCA did not respond to request for comment.
According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. Israel has defended its actions, saying it has been targeting militants.
&ldquo;Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price&mdash; their lives&mdash;to defend our right to the truth. Each time a journalist dies or is injured, we lose a fragment of that truth,&rdquo; CPJ Program Director Carlos Mart&iacute;nez de la Serna said in a statement.
Sandra Tamari, executive director of Adalah Justice Project, a U.S.-based Palestinian advocacy group that helped organize the letter from journalists in Gaza, said &ldquo;it is shameful for the media to dine and laugh with President Biden while he enables the Israeli devastation and starvation of Palestinians in Gaza.&rdquo;
In addition, Adalah Justice Project started an email campaign targeting 12 media executives at various news outlets &mdash; including The Associated Press &mdash; expected to attend the dinner who previously signed onto a letter calling for the protection of journalists in Gaza.
&ldquo;How can you still go when your colleagues in Gaza asked you not to?&rdquo; a demonstrator asked guests heading in. &ldquo;You are complicit.&rdquo;

A Texas man legally changed his name to &lsquo;Literally Anybody Else&rsquo; as he announced his presidential bid as an independent candidate saying voters in the US want &ldquo;literally anybody else&rdquo; but Joe Biden or Donald Trump. &nbsp; The man, formerly known as Dustin Ebey, says his new name is a "rally cry" against the two presidential candidates.&nbsp; The 35-year-old is a math teacher and a US Army veteran from North Richland Hills, a suburb in Dallas.&nbsp; Having a Texas driving license under the name &lsquo;Literally Anybody Else&rsquo;, the candidate's website says, "For too long have Americans been a victim of its political parties putting party loyalty over governance. Together let's send the message to Washington and say, 'You will represent or be replaced'. America should not be stuck choosing between the 'King of Debt' and an 81-year-old."&nbsp; "Literally Anybody Else isn&rsquo;t a person, it&rsquo;s a rally cry. Join the movement in any way... Let this campaign be a beacon of hope and innovation," the website further adds. &nbsp; The reason he changed his name, reportedly, was because he was unsatisfied with the two presidential candidates. He also said that "three hundred million people can do better".&nbsp; The man also shared a post on X in November 2023 saying, "Time for a revolution! Meet 'Literally Anybody Else' - the antidote to the political establishment. A leader untainted by politics, who empathizes with YOUR dreams and struggles. Let's prioritize practical solutions and a future that works for ALL."&nbsp;

Donald Trump celebrated an "amazing night" as he closed in on the Republican presidential nomination with easy wins in the Super Tuesday primaries, setting up an all-but-certain rematch with President Joe Biden in November.
Fifteen states and a US territory staged nominating contests on the biggest day of the 2024 race so far, with both candidates coveting a second term in the White House.
Texas and California were among the major victories for Trump over Nikki Haley as he picked up support in every demographic, taking conservative southern states and more liberal battlegrounds such as Virginia, one of his longshot challenger's best chances.
He was denied a clean sweep, with Haley edging a tight contest in the northeastern state of Vermont, but the former president told supporters they had witnessed "an amazing night and an amazing day."
"They call it 'Super Tuesday' for a reason," Trump told a cheering crowd at his Mar-a-Lago beach club in Florida.
"This is a big one. They tell me, the pundits and otherwise, that there has never been one like this, never been anything so conclusive."
This year's Super Tuesday was sapped of much of its suspense as Biden and Trump had effectively secured their parties' nominations before a ballot was cast Tuesday.

Trump's victories included Maine, one of three states that had sought to keep him off the ballot over his push to overturn the 2020 election and the assault on the US Capitol.
The Supreme Court rejected the expulsion effort on Monday, clearing the path for Trump's participation in every state.
The states up for grabs Tuesday offered 70 percent of the delegates Republicans need to be named the party's candidate at the summer convention.
Trump was not able mathematically to close out the contest but he expects to be anointed by March 19 at the latest, according to his campaign.
Some primary-watchers expect the 52-year-old to end her campaign shortly, though she argues that she is more likely than Trump to beat Biden in November and could forge on.
"There remains a large block of Republican primary voters who are expressing deep concerns about Donald Trump," her spokesperson said late Tuesday.
