Canada&rsquo;s Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya has announced that he is running to be the next Prime Minister, hours before his Liberal Party announced that their next leader will be chosen on March 9.
The development comes days after Justin Trudeau announced to step down but said he will continue to be the prime minister till the next leader is chosen.
Arya, the MP from Nepean, Ottawa, who was born in Karnataka, made the announcement on X Thursday morning ahead of the Liberal Party's meeting later in the evening.

&ldquo;I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a small, more efficient government to rebuild our nation and secure prosperity for future generations,&rdquo; he said in the post on X and added a long statement with it.
Stating that Canada is &ldquo;facing significant structural problems&rdquo; that haven&rsquo;t been seen for generations, Arya said, adding that solving them will require tough choices. &ldquo;For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we must make bold decisions that are absolutely necessary.&rdquo;
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) highlighted that Arya wants to lead a small, more efficient government &ldquo;with a cabinet selected on merit and not on (diversity, equity and inclusion) quotas.&rdquo;
Arya was first elected to the House of Commons in 2015.
His multi-page announcement includes a list of policy proposals, including increasing the retirement age by two years in 2040, introducing a citizenship-based tax system and recognising Palestine as a state, it added.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s time for Canada to take full control of its destiny,&rdquo; he wrote in the statement and promised to make the country &ldquo;a sovereign republic.&rdquo; It would require replacing the monarchy as the head of state.
After the meeting of the National Board of Directors, Sachit Mehra, president of the Liberal Party of Canada, said in a statement: &ldquo;After a robust and secure nation-wide process, the Liberal Party of Canada will choose a new leader on March 9, and be ready to fight and win the 2025 election.&rdquo;
The National Board of Directors formally met on Thursday evening to discuss and outline the initial rules of the upcoming leadership race, the party statement added.
After the party's announcement, another CBC report said that former central banker Mark Carney has also said he's interested and added that former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former B.C. premier Christy Clark and House Leader Karina Gould are said to be gathering supporters, too.
Prior to Thursday's meeting, along with Arya, former Montreal MP Frank Baylis both said they will be running, it said.
The CBC report also pointed out how the new leader chosen on March 9 will have a tight timeline as the Gov Gen Mary Simon has prorouged Parliament untill March 24. The main three opposition parties have vowed a 'No Confidence' vote after Parliament resumes, other media reports said.
Meanwhile, The Toronto Star newspaper said, Arya is a vocal advocate for Hindu Canadians and has clashed with other parliamentarians, including his own Liberal caucus colleagues, over his views on relations between Ottawa and New Delhi and the actions of Sikh separatists in Canada.
A few months ago, Arya sparred with New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh and Liberal caucus colleague Sukh Dhaliwal after separatist Sikh protesters clashed with Hindu worshippers at a temple in the Greater Toronto Area during a visit from Indian consular officials amid heightened tensions between Canada and India.
Last year, Arya travelled to India and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A statement from Global Affairs Canada at the time said Arya &ldquo;travelled to India on his own initiative and was not representing the Government of Canada.&rdquo;

Nicholas Norman mounted an armed vigil at his home after seeing suspicious characters in the middle of the night.
"I did the classic American thing: I went and got my shotgun and I sat out there, and put a light on so they knew people were there," he told AFP.

The Kenneth Fire exploded to almost 1,000 acres within hours, forcing more people from their homes, with over 180,000 now displaced.

Unlike Tuesday when the multi-pronged disaster roared to life and 100-mile (160-kilometer)-an-hour winds grounded all aircraft, firefighters were able to keep up a steady stream of sorties.
But one Super Scooper -- an amphibious aircraft that dumps hundreds of gallons of water at a time -- was grounded after colliding with a drone.
Although no one was hurt, the Federal Aviation Authority said it was probing the incident, and warned anyone flying drones in fire areas could be jailed for a year.
Some of those forced out of their homes began to return Thursday to find scenes of devastation.
Kalen Astoor, a 36-year-old paralegal, said her mother's home had been spared by the inferno's seemingly random and chaotic destruction. But many other homes had not.
"The view now is of death and destruction," she told AFP. "I don't know if anyone can come back for a while."

Pointing out that the Gulf of Mexico was the name recognized by the United Nations, she turned the tables on Trump, saying: "Why don't we call it (the United States) Mexican America?"

"He talked about name, we too are talking about the name," she said, while assuring that she expected to have "good relations" with the incoming US president.
Trump, who will be sworn in for a second term on January 20, said Tuesday he planned to rename the Gulf of Mexico "the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring."
"It's appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country," he said.
He also claimed that Mexico was run by drug cartels, to which Sheinbaum responded that "in Mexico, the people rule."
In the run-up to his return to office, Trump has repeatedly lashed out at Mexico, threatening to impose stiff tariffs on imports from one of the United States' biggest trading partners unless it halted the flow of illegal migrants and drugs across the border.
He has also revived a threat from his first term to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups.

US President Joe Biden announced Monday that two of the Navy's future aircraft carriers will be named for former commanders-in-chief Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
"The future USS William J. Clinton (CVN 82) and the future USS George W. Bush (CVN 83) will begin construction in the years ahead," Biden said in a statement issued just a week before he is replaced in office by Donald Trump.
"When complete, they will join the most capable, flexible, and professional Navy that has ever put to sea," Biden said.
The United States has a long tradition of naming some of its aircraft carriers -- massive warships that are crewed by thousands of sailors and carry dozens of planes -- after former presidents.
The latest line of US carriers is named for Gerald R. Ford, and another of the multi-billion-dollar ships bears John F. Kennedy's name -- the second time he has been honored in that way.
Clinton -- who did not serve in the military -- was president from 1993 to 2001, a period that saw US warplanes carry out strikes in Iraq and Yugoslavia, and American troops battle Somali militiamen in the infamous Black Hawk Down incident, among other conflicts.
Bush, who served as a pilot in the Air National Guard, held America's highest office from 2001 to 2009.
His presidency was defined by the so-called "War on Terror" that he launched in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, a military effort that spanned the globe and included the devastating, long-running wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that left tens of thousands of people dead.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hailed the choice of the names, saying that the ships "will serve as lasting tributes to each leader's legacy in service of the United States."
"Like their namesakes, these two future carriers, and the crews who sail them, will work to safeguard our national security, remind us of our history, and inspire others to serve our great republic," Austin said in a statement.

Colvin broke down in tears on Sunday when a dog tracker helped him locate Oreo among the debris of a neighbor&rsquo;s house in the Pacific Palisades, the area hardest hit by the blaze. Armed with a squeaky toy and accompanied by his other dog, Colvin approached the gate, where Oreo was found sitting atop the driveway&mdash;grimy but unharmed. The reunion was emotional as Colvin coaxed Oreo closer, embracing him with overwhelming joy.
&ldquo;Oh my God! You&rsquo;re alive! Oh, honey!&rdquo; Colvin exclaimed, pumping his fist in sheer relief and happiness.
The search for Oreo had captured widespread attention after Colvin's distress was featured in a story by NBC News correspondent Liz Kreutz. After several days of uncertainty, someone reported seeing Oreo amidst the rubble. This led Colvin to rush to the location, and on January 12, with the help of a professional dog trapper, he was finally reunited with his beloved pet.
Kreutz shared the emotional moment on social media, writing, &ldquo;OREO HAS BEEN FOUND!!!&rdquo; She added that it was &ldquo;an incredible bright spot in such a devastating time.&rdquo;
While reporting the story, Kreutz revealed that Colvin was not home when the evacuation order was issued. His two dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika, were left behind inside the house. Colvin&rsquo;s desperation to return to save his pets was apparent from the first day of the fire.
&ldquo;I met Casey Colvin the very first day of the fire. He was in distress trying to get back to his home in the Palisades to get his two dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika,&rdquo; said Kreutz.
Fortunately, a firefighter took heroic action and went to Colvin&rsquo;s home to save the dogs. However, he could only retrieve Tika Tika Tika because Oreo had already escaped. &ldquo;Had that firefighter not intervened, both dogs would have been trapped when the flames arrived,&rdquo; Kreutz added.
Afterward, a friend of Colvin spotted Oreo in the neighborhood, and with the help of an AirTag, they were able to track the dog's movements. Colvin was able to find Oreo hiding in a neighbor's home. When Oreo saw his owner, he immediately ran to him, completing the joyful reunion.
&ldquo;We rushed to his street where Oreo was hiding in his neighbor&rsquo;s home. The moment he saw Casey, he came running,&rdquo; Kreutz said.

The fires continued to rip through the United States' second-largest city for the sixth day, reducing whole communities to scorched rubble and leaving thousands without homes.
Massive firefighting efforts have staunched the spread of the Palisades Fire, which was looming toward upscale Brentwood and the densely populated San Fernando Valley.
But conditions are set to dramatically worsen, with "extreme fire behavior and life threatening conditions" over the coming days.
Winds up to 70 miles (110 kilometers) per hour mean a "particularly dangerous situation (PDS)" will be declared from early Tuesday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Rose Schoenfeld.
These gusts could fan flames and whip up embers from existing burn zones into new areas, firefighters warned.
Los Angeles County Fire Department chief Anthony Marrone said his department had received resources including dozens of new water trucks and firefighters from far afield and was primed to face the renewed threat.
Questioned whether hydrants could run dry again, as they did during the initial outbreak of fires last week, Mayor Karen Bass replied: "I believe the city is prepared."
There was frustration for evacuees who were told they would not be returning home until at least Thursday when winds subside.
