Priyanka Gandhi is everywhere and seems like she’s also always up for a good fight against her opponents - be it the UP police or the BJP Goliath in the state. Clearly, we're talking about Priyanka 2.0 - she's street smart, she's not afraid to set foot into the maidan and fight adversaries head to head. 
 
The Congress’s UP campaign is hinging upon the idea of Naari Shakti. From a separate manifesto for women that guarantees them safety and opportunity - to declaring that 40% of all tickets will be reserved for women, one of the most major poll pushes from the Congress this time around is that women must be a part of the political fabric of a country in order for it to develop and grow. Some of the salient promises of the ‘womanifesto’ include: 
- Businesses with more than 50 per cent female workforce to get special incentives, including tax exemptions 
- Mandatory creche facility at all government offices 
- Students of class 12 to be given smartphone, while those pursuing graduation will be given a scooty 
- Free public transport for women 
- Three free gas cylinders in a year to every woman in the state  
- 25 per cent jobs to women in police force and female constables to be posted in all police stations 
 
While the other major players draw crowds of saffron supporters and those in laal topis - the congress’ supporter base this time around seems to be coming from young women participating in the Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti hoon marathons. A slogan that is being taken forward very heavily by the INC - and most definitely by Priyanka Gandhi, who looks amped up to take on any ladai that comes her way. 
 
Priyanka Gandhi is no stranger to the cameras. And by the looks of it not afraid of the formidable UP police either. Which isn’t surprising given that their attempts to foil her plans have not worked out to well in their favour. - They tried stopping her from going to Sonbhadra after 10 people were killed - it failed. Tried to stop her again after the horrific Hathras gangrape and murder - it failed. Custodial deaths in Agra, Lakhimpur Kheri violence, every single time they tried to stop her - it failed.  
 
While some are likening the Congress General Secretary to Indira Gandhi, the ground reality is slightly different. The Grand Old Party is not what it was four decades ago. Congress' sinking fortunes in UP have only gone from bad to worse in polls after polls. Even Priyanka's record is not something to boast about - despite her extensive campaign in Amethi and Raebareli - both slipped out of the Congress's hands in the 2017 elections. And then there was the humiliating loss of the family bastion of Amethi - that Rahul Gandhi lost to BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019. 
 
As per most recent data, women have outnumbered men in getting their names registered on the electoral rolls in UP. There are currently 6.98 crore female voters on UP’s voter list. So on paper it looks like a stellar idea to chart away from the usual politics of caste and religion in the state and venture into the territory of women voters - but the jury is still out on if this will translate into any change in the voters’ mood on the ground. 
 
With just 7 MLAs in the 403-seat Assembly - Congress's journey to victory is definitely going to be much tougher than the recent voyages that Ms.Gandhi has been taking. Will her heavy focus on issues of women and new knack for playing real politics take Congress the distance? Looks like we'll find out!

As election season inches closer, massive rallies with seas of people as far as the eye can see give a shining picture of our country as the world&rsquo;s largest democracy. A fact that no party in power ever loses an opportunity to remind us - however as many say, the devil lies in the detail and a breakdown of India&rsquo;s first past the post election system begs one to ask the question - what is the majority in India?
India votes as per the first past the post system, also known as the system of winner takes all. Simply broken down, this method of voting means that each person of the electorate gets one vote and the candidates who gets the most votes wins - regardless of what their vote share is.
This system works for a multiparty set up like India, where a simple majority is tough to reach.&nbsp;But that being said, as with all other systems - there are loopholes and shortcoming in this one too.
One of the largest criticisms about FPTP is that it&rsquo;s not representative in nature. Minorities, on account of never being able to beat out winning candidates in securing a greater number of votes, end up missing out on the opportunity of getting a seat at the decision-making table.
Another criticism is that since it&rsquo;s about the candidate who gets the greatest number of votes - the gap between the people who actually voted for you, versus the entire population is very wide. Let&rsquo;s try to understand this using the example of Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
In the 2017 Assembly election, Amethi had about 3 lakhs 34 thousand eligible electors. Of this only 1 lakh 87 thousand voted. That is a 56% voter turnout. Of this turn out - only 64,226 picked Garima Singh as their MLA - just 34% of the voters, and only 19% of the eligible voters. Despite the fact that a BJP MLA was not picked by 81% of the population in her constituency - we still call this the popular vote.
Another facet of the FPTP is that there is no correlation between the vote shares and the seats secured. In 2017, the SP had a 21.8% vote share, and the BSP a 22.2% vote share, however despite the fact that BSP had more votes in terms of numbers, the SP secured 47 seats and the BSP only 19. This is because it&rsquo;s not about the votes that are polled but the margins of victory and loss in each constituency.
The numbers are a little confusing, but what are the other alternatives?
Some have suggested a proportional representation system which is about allotting seats in the ratio of the vote share. If a party has 30% votes, give them 30% seats - it sounds simpler than it is. Many say that this is a logistical nightmare and can lead to severely unstable governments. In fact, arguing against the system of proportional representation, Dr.B R Ambedkar had said that reservation is a far better safeguard to the rights of minorities and marginalised groups.
Let&rsquo;s take a look at the numbers as they stand in UP today. In 2017, the BJP secured close to 40%&nbsp;of the total votes polled. The voter turnout was at an impressive 61.04% of the electorate. However, this number diminishes to 24.2% of the people who were actually eligible to vote. Another way of looking at it is&nbsp;75.8% of eligible voters in the state didn&rsquo;t support BJP.&nbsp;
It has been the same story nationally since the start.&nbsp;
 No party, not even Congress under Jawaharlal Nehru, has won 50% vote share in any national elections, beginning 1951. The most a party has got is 48% under Rajiv Gandhi in 1984. The Congress won 404 of 514 Lok Sabha seats after Indira Gandhi's assassination.
 For four decades after Independence, Congress ruled the country with just over 40% voteshare.
 As the Congress domination waned and coalition era kicked in in late 80s and 90s, vote share of the main winning party plunged to 30%. 1996 to 2009, parties formed govts with less than 30% voteshare. The winning party's voteshare again crossed 30% when Narendra Modi-led BJP swept to power.&nbsp; So is there some confusion about &lsquo;majority&rsquo; in our country? Yes
There then remains only one way to lessen the gap in the numbers - and you know it already! Go vote! The biggest tool in our hands when it comes to making the assembly more representative in nature is to make sure that we exercise our sacred right to vote. There is enough time, so if you haven&rsquo;t already - make sure to go and get your voter ID card made, and make these elections as democratic as possible!

As from today's UP election result, it is clearly visible that BJP is heading in Uttar Pradesh. Amid this tough battle between SP & BJP, an interesting case from Baduan state in UP grab the spotlight where it has been seen that two supporters from BJP & SP, i.e. Vijay Singh and Sher Ali, both of them agree on having a bet with each other.
They have prepared an agreement in which it has been written that whosoever party won in the 2022 polls, will be holding 4 bighas land, and they both had put thumb impression respectively to confirm the agreement, which is currently trending on social media. The bet was witnessed by the entire village.
Now it's going to be very interesting who will be going to get that 4 bighas land. Observing the current results, there are chances for Vijay Singh to win the bet.

That UP was a high stakes battle was always clear. Not only for Yogi Adityanath and Akhilesh. In UP's Badaun the stakes were higher and personal for two fans of the CM and SP chief.
Vijay Singh and Sher Ali of Badaun had placed a bet on&nbsp;who will be the next CM of UP and the prize was four bigha land.
And it was not just a verbal bet. A proper, formal agreement was made between the two parties on paper with thumb impressions and entire village as witness. The bet agreement is currently trending on social media.

Exit Polls are out for five state Assembly polls. While the exact results will be out on March 10, exit polls keep up the political excitement in the run-up to counting.
The latest tranche of exit polls have predicted a BJP win in UP, an Aam Aadmi Party surprise in Punjab, a tight BJP-Congress contest in Uttarakhand, advantage BJP in Manipur and a hung house in Goa.
But how far have the exit polls been from the exact polls. A look at the last few <a href="https://www.editorji.com/elections" target="_blank">Assembly polls</a> shows that exit polls have been getting it all wrong in big contests.

Let's look at West Bengal.
Almost all exit polls predicted a close contest between the BJP and Trinamool. Some even gave the BJP a thumping majority. The poll of exit polls for Bengal pitched BJP at 138 seats Vs Trinamool's 141. But when the actual results came, it was a Trinamool landslide, while BJP remained a distant second. Didi's party romped home in 213 of the 294 seats, while the BJP won just 77.
Ditto in Haryana in 2019. With Assembly elections coming within months of BJP's emphatic Lok Sabha win, exit polls predicted an impressive win for the BJP in the state. As per the poll of polls, BJP was projected to romp home in close to 70 of the 90 seats, and Congress was relegated to a mere 13. But again the results were totally different, where BJP failed to secure a majority. The saffron party won 40 seats, much less than what exit polls gave it and Congress secured 31 seats, much more than the exit polls predictions.
Similarly in Bihar 2020, all exit polls predicted a win for RJD alliance. A couple of exit polls even gave RJD a landslide win with around 180 seats in the 243 member house. Here too the actual results were opposite of the exit polls. When the votes were counted, BJP-JDU alliance won a majority with 125 seats and the RJD alliance lost with 110 seats.
Even in Maharashtra 2019, exit polls had totally written off the Congress alliance. The exit polls largely predicted a sweeping win for the BJP alliance with some polls handing the alliance 220 out of 288 seats. What were the exact results? BJP alliance 164, Congress alliance 96.

So while exit polls may be good for political excitement before the actual counting, they need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

RLD chief and Akhilesh Yadav's ally, Jayant Chaudhary took a swipe at BJP and tweeted that EVMs were malfunctioning as youngsters and farmers were pressing the button in anger. He urged them to press the button lightly in favour of the SP-RLD alliance. 
The first phase of polling is being held in 58 assembly seats spread across 11 districts in the western part of the state.
As many as 623 candidates including 73 women are in the fray in the first phase and around 2.28 crore voters including 1.24 crore men and 1.04 women besides others are eligible to cast their franchise,

With Assembly polls less than a week away in western Uttar Pradesh, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait made a veiled attack on the ruling BJP on Sunday as he said Muzaffarnagar is "not a stadium for Hindu-Muslim matches".
The national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), which is a part of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), said those talking on communal lines will not witness electoral gains in the region.
"Western Uttar Pradesh wants to talk about development. Those talking about Hindu, Muslim, Jinnah, religion will lose votes. Muzaffarnagar is not a stadium for Hindu-Muslim matches," Tikait said in a tweet in Hindi.
In another tweet, he called on people to question the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates in the upcoming polls about the farmers who lost their lives during their year-long protest against three agriculture laws of the Centre, which have now been repealed.
"The prime minister of the country has not even taken the name of the farmers who got martyred during the movement. Till date, the prime minister has avoided calling the farmers who lost their lives in the movement as martyrs. Farmers should question their candidates," Tikait said.
Tikait's BKU is headquartered in Muzaffarnagar district of western Uttar Pradesh.
Muzaffarnagar had witnessed communal riots in 2013, after which the dominant Jat and Muslim communities in the region had apparently grown apart.
The BJP had virtually swept the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls and the 2019 Lok Sabha election in the region, although the farmers' agitation against the Centre has witnessed the gap between the two communities bridging, according to political observers.
Polling is scheduled to be held in Muzaffarnagar in the first round of the seven-phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls on February 10. The counting of votes will be taken up on March 10.

Snide remarks on actor and BJP MP Hema Malini are disgustingly common in political discourse.
The latest to enter the sexist hall of shame is RLD chief Jayant Chaudhry. 
At a poll meeting in Mathura, from where Hema Malini is the MP, Jayant said that Home Minister Amit Shah asked an RLD leader to join the BJP. He added that Shah promised to make him next Hema Malini. The comment obviously drew the ire of the BJP.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur has demanded an apology from Jayant.
Jayant's snarky comment on Hema Malini is not the first such sexist rant.
In the 90s, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was attributed for a comment about constructing roads in Bihar ”as smooth as the cheeks of Hema Malini”. Lalu however denied having made such a comment.
But this "cheeky" comment has become the most distasteful constant in political references.
In 2019, Congress Madhya Pradesh minister PC Sharma again promised to turn Bhopal roads as smooth as Hema's cheek.
In 2013,  the then UP minister Raja Ram Pandey promised to build roads as smooth as the cheeks of Hema Malini and Madhuri Dixit.
Then there was another MP minister Sajjan Singh Verma who said that BJP makes Hema Malini dance to get votes.
Recently, Maharashtra minister Gulabrao Patil compared the smoothness of roads in his Assembly constituency, Jalgaon district, to Hema Malini's cheeks. The minister later apologised for the remark.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhliesh Yadav accused BJP of conspiracy after his helicopter was not allowed to take off from Delhi on Friday. 
Akhilesh had tweeted on Friday afternoon that BJP had stopped is helicopter from taking off without giving any reason because they wanted to prevent him from going to Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, where he was supposed to address a meeting. 
News agency ANI quoted a Delhi airport official as saying that the SP chief's helicopter was denied permission to fly due to high air traffic. 
In reply, Akhilesh said that senior BJP leaders had been allowed to take off and questioned if there was no 'high air traffic' for BJP leaders. 
He said he had to wait for over 2 hours at the airport but BJP leaders faced no such inconvenience.

As five states head to polls, the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Election Commission of India and the Narendra Modi government seeking their response to a plea seeking a direction to seize the election symbol or de-register a political party that promises or distributes 'irrational freebies' from public funds before elections.
Noting that it was a serious issue and the budget for freebies goes beyond the regular budget, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justices AS Bopanna and Hima Kohli observed that ‘even though it is not a corrupt practice but it creates a uneven playing field’.
The PIL filed by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay cites the Aam Aadmi Party’s promise of Rs 1,000 per month to every woman aged 18, ahead of the Punjab polls. It also states examples like Shiromani Akali Dal  and Congress to target the women voters.
Justice Kohli remarked that the petitioner has been selective in naming the political parties in his petition. The CJI too noted that the petitioner has named only two parties in his affidavit.
Last week, the Supreme Court had said it would consider listing for hearing a plea seeking a direction to the EC to ensure that political parties publish details regarding criminal cases of candidates along with the reason for their selection on their websites.

Kuldeep Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2019 for raping a girl in Makhi village and is currently in jail.
In a list of candidates released on Thursday, Congress had named Asha Singh, the rape victim's mother, as its candidate from Unnao assembly seat.
In a video that went viral on social media on Saturday, Sengar's daughter Aishwarya was seen objecting to the decision invoking “morality”.
"Priyanka Gandhi ji, this political step taken by you may be sound, I do not know politics. But the religion of society and morality will never forgive you," she allegedly said in the video.
Aishwarya even claimed that Asha Singh, the proposed candidate, has a case registered against her for forging a transfer certificate and mark sheet.
“More than dozen of cases are registered against your candidate's family in this Unnao … Unnao will never accept politics which destroys a family. You will also see its result on March 10. The blessings of our Unnao were with me and always will be," she said

Releasing the first list of 107 candidates for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, the BJP on Saturday fielded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur Urban seat and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya from Sirathu in Prayagraj as it expressed confidence of retaining power with a big majority.
Except for Adityanath and Maurya, all the names are for 105 of the 113 seats which will go to the polls in the first two phases on February 10 and 14, with 44 of them hailing from Other Backward Classes and 19 Scheduled Castes, accounting for 60 per cent of the total.
Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters the list has 63 sitting MLAs, including ministers such as Suresh Khanna, Suresh Rana and Shrikant Sharma, while 20 have made way for others.
Former Uttarakhand governor and now BJP vice-president Baby Rani Maurya, a Dalit, has been fielded from Agra (rural). Pankaj Singh, the son of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will again contest from Noida seat.
While there was speculation that Adityanath may be fielded from Ayodhya, Pradhan said the party decided to put him in the fray from Gorakhpur, his traditional political turf which he has represented in Lok Sabha for five consecutive terms.
Asked about the issue, Pradhan said the chief minister was willing to contest from any of the 403 seats in the state.
This is the first time Adityanath will contest Assembly polls.
With the Jat-concentrated region going to the polls in the first two phases, the agrarian community, which was at the forefront of the agitation in western Uttar Pradesh against three contentious farm laws, has got 16 seats, sources said.
Of the 43 seats from where general castes members have been fielded by the BJP, sources noted that 18 are Thakurs, 10 Brahmins and eight Vaishya.
Among the 19 SC candidates in the BJP's first list, 13 are Jatavs, who make up for more than half of the total Dalit population.
The move is seen as a major push by the party to win the support of a section of the community which has been a traditional base of the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party.
Some of the seats where polling will be held in the first two phases and for which the BJP did not name its candidates on Saturday will go the allies.
Highlighting the BJP's outreach to marginalized communities, Pradhan said the party has fielded a Dalit candidate from a general category seat and will name more of them from unreserved seats in its coming lists for the Uttar Pradesh polls.
The BJP had contested the 2017 Assembly polls on the plank of fighting corruption and restoring law and order in the state, and the Yogi Adityanath government has done so, Pradhan, who was joined by BJP general secretary Arun Singh, said.
The state is now riot-free, he claimed, adding a lot of development works, including the establishment of colleges and highways, have taken place under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Uttar Pradesh now ranks high in the list of the beneficiaries of the Modi government's housing scheme, free cooking gas cylinder programme and Ayushman Bharat, he said.
BJP president J P Nadda said every BJP worker has worked round the clock for people and the party is committed to the progress of every section of society in the state.
"I am confident that every BJP candidate will emerge victorious with a big majority with people's blessings and support," he said.

Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad on Saturday ruled out the possibility of an alliance between his party and the Samajwadi Party for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. “I have had a lot of meetings with Akhilesh Yadav in the last 6 months. Meanwhile, positive things also happened but in the end I felt that Akhilesh Yadav does not need Dalits. He does not want Dalit leaders in this alliance. He wants Dalits to vote for him,” he said.
Earlier, Chandra Shekhar Azad said that his, Azad Samaj Party, will fight the state polls in alliance with the Samajwadi Party. He was also going to hold a joint press conference with Akhilesh Yadav at 12.30 pm on Saturday.
However, the police denied Aazad to hold the press conference in his Lucknow office in view of Covid-19 restrictions.

In another setback to the BJP govt in Uttar Pradesh, state minister and OBC leader Dharam Singh Saini has quit the party and joined the Samajwadi Party. 
With less than a month to go for the assembly elections, Saini is the eighth BJP leader and 3rd state minister to quit in the last 3 days. 
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted a photograph with Saini to welcome him and said that his arrival gives the party more strength and enthusiasm. 
Earlier on Thursday, BJP MLA Mukesh Verma resigned from the primary membership of the party alleging 'lack of respect' by the government towards backward classes and Dalits.
The exodus of OBC leaders from the BJP was triggered by the resignation of Swami Prasad Maurya, who was also minister in Yogi Adityanath's cabinet, on Tuesday.
