As Russia continues its military advance in eastern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday fired his state security chief and prosecutor general, citing hundreds of criminal proceedings into treason and collaboration by people within their departments and other law enforcement agencies.
&ldquo;In particular, more than 60 employees of the prosecutor&rsquo;s office and the SBU (state security service) have remained in the occupied territory and work against our state,&rdquo; Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address to the nation.
&ldquo;Such an array of crimes against the foundations of the state&rsquo;s national security, and the links recorded between Ukrainian security forces and Russian special services raise very serious questions about their respective leaders,&rsquo;&rsquo; he added.
Zelenskyy dismissed Ivan Bakanov, a childhood friend and former business partner whom he had appointed to head the SBU. Bakanov had come under growing criticism over security breaches since the war began.
He also dismissed Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova, and replaced her with her deputy Oleksiy Symonenko. Venediktova had been leading war crime investigations against Russia.
On July 9, Zelenskyy had announced the sacking of Ukraine&rsquo;s ambassadors to Germany, India, Czech Republic, Norway and Hungary without stating any reason behind the move.

At least 70 vessels - up to 95% of them being international ones - are blocked at Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

"While we used to have about a 6,000000-ton turnover via ports and other transportation hubs, right now, we are at 600,000-700,000 monthly," grain trader Vitaly Lavrov said.
Hundreds of ships have also lost the chance to set sail in Crimea.
With boats not able to leave, fishing businesses on the peninsula have been suffering.
"The company is suffering losses," local businessman Andrey Bezukh said.
"We had 100 tons of flatfish and brill projected for 2022. And that's only a part of the whole quota for the Republic of Crimea which is 352 tons."
He added people had been forced to look for other work with ships not able to set sail.

Many are asking why do so many Indian students go to Ukraine and many other east European countries for medical studies.

Of 83,000 seats, only half are in government medical colleges, rest are private colleges.
While the fees for govt colleges is nominal and affordable, a 4.5-year MBBS course in a private college can cost anything between 50 lakh to over a crore.
Compare this to fees in Ukraine, where a student can complete a 6-year medical course in under 20 lakhs.
This has made East European countries such as Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania a popular destination for Indian students.
But medical graduates from foreign countries need to clear a Foreign Medical Graduates Exam to be able to practice in India.
Although, the number of medical graduates taking the test increased from 12,116 in 2015 to 35,774 in 2020, data shows that most fail.
According to an Indian Express report, In 2020, 12,680 graduates from Chinese universities appeared for the examination. This was followed by 4,313 graduates from Russia, 4,258 from Ukraine, 4,156 from Kyrgyzstan, 3,142 from the Philippines, and 2,311 from Kazakhstan.
How many cleared it?
Over the last five years, the average pass percentage of the FMGE examination has been nearly 16%, and the pass number for graduates from Ukraine has been just 17%.
As per the WHO norms, a country needs 1:1000 population-doctor ratio. In India currently, the ration is 1:1456. India needs 1.38 million doctors. According to the National Health Profile 2021, there are 1.2 million registered medical practitioners in the country.
Experts say that capping the fees at private colleges and increasing the number of MBBS seats can help realise a lot more students' medical dreams in the country and also perk up the availability of qualified doctors.

As Russia intensified bombings and Vladimir Putin vowed to continue with the bombings, President Zelenskyy called on the West on Thursday to increase military aid to Ukraine, saying Russia would advance on the rest of Europe otherwise.

A video shared by Zhytomyr mayor showed firefighters battling searing flames after the air strike.
Zhytomyr is 140 kilometres west of the Capital Kyiv.
"There were several bombs. The building was destroyed. The hospital's doors and windows were all blown out," the mayor, Sergey Sukhomlyn said in a video statement.

___ Canberra—Australia will provide Ukraine with $50 million in missiles, ammunition and other military hardware to fight Russian invaders.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday elaborated on his country's plans after revealing a day earlier that his government would provide Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with lethal military equipment. Morrison promised only non-lethal military equipment last week.
“President Zelenskyy said: Don't give me a ride, give me ammunition,' and that's exactly what the Australian government has agreed to do,” Morrison said.
Australia had committed $50 million to provide both lethal and non-lethal defensive support for Ukraine through NATO, he said.
“The overwhelming majority of that ... will be in the lethal category,” Morrison said.
“We're talking missiles, we're talking ammunition, we're talking supporting them in their defense of their own homeland in Ukraine and we'll be doing that in partnership with NATO,” Morrison said.
“I'm not going to go into the specifics of that because I don't plan to give the Russian government a heads up about what's coming their way, but I can assure them it is coming your way,” he added.
___ Kyiv—Satellite photos show a convoy of Russian forces north of Ukraine's capital stretching for 40 miles.
The vast convoy of armoured vehicles, tanks, artillery and support vehicles was 17 miles (25 kilometers) from the center of Kyiv and stretched for about 40 miles, according to satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies.
The Maxar photos also showed deployments of ground forces and ground attack helicopter units in southern Belarus.

Senators emerged from a Monday evening meeting with Ambassador Oksana Markarova at the Capitol as Congress is preparing supplemental funding to help Ukraine during the crisis. The White House is seeking at least $6.4 billion in military and humanitarian aid.
“They need more arms,” said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the chairman of the Intelligence Committee.
“It's David versus Goliath,” said Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho, the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee. “I think that any human being reading the reports coming out of there realize that this is dire.” Senators in the U.S. are working to provide ammunition such as anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine -- what Risch called an “all of the above” effort.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday elaborated on his country's plans after revealing a day earlier that his government would provide Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with lethal military equipment. Morrison promised only non-lethal military equipment last week.
&ldquo;President Zelenskyy said: Don't give me a ride, give me ammunition,' and that's exactly what the Australian government has agreed to do,&rdquo; Morrison said.
Australia had committed $50 million to provide both lethal and non-lethal defensive support for Ukraine through NATO, he said.
&ldquo;The overwhelming majority of that ... will be in the lethal category,&rdquo; Morrison said.

___ Kyiv&mdash;Satellite photos show a convoy of Russian forces north of Ukraine's capital stretching for 40 miles.
The vast convoy of armoured vehicles, tanks, artillery and support vehicles was 17 miles (25 kilometers) from the center of Kyiv and stretched for about 40 miles, according to satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies.
The Maxar photos also showed deployments of ground forces and ground attack helicopter units in southern Belarus.

Senators emerged from a Monday evening meeting with Ambassador Oksana Markarova at the Capitol as Congress is preparing supplemental funding to help Ukraine during the crisis. The White House is seeking at least $6.4 billion in military and humanitarian aid.
&ldquo;They need more arms,&rdquo; said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the chairman of the Intelligence Committee.
&ldquo;It's David versus Goliath,&rdquo; said Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho, the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee. &ldquo;I think that any human being reading the reports coming out of there realize that this is dire.&rdquo; Senators in the U.S. are working to provide ammunition such as anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine -- what Risch called an &ldquo;all of the above&rdquo; effort.

Throughout the crisis, Russia and President Putin have falsely alleged that it is under threat, including from Ukraine, including from NATO, she noted.
“Neither the United States nor NATO has any desire or intention for conflict with Russia. And we think provocative rhetoric like this regarding nuclear weapons is dangerous, adds to the risk of miscalculation, should be avoided, and we’ll not indulge in it,” Psaki said.
“There's no question that what we've seen from President Putin, whether it is escalatory rhetoric as it relates to nuclear capabilities and nuclear intentions -- something that is in direct conflict with something President Putin, himself, and the Russians committed to -- had an alternate -- committed to something else just a year ago, or whether it is the speech he gave last week where he questioned the sovereignty of the country of Ukraine at all, or the actions he's taking right now,” she said.
“Those are not actions of a global leader that should be treated with respect on the global stage,” Psaki said.
Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby described Putin's comment in this regard as unnecessary and escalatory.
“But we are reviewing and analysing that announcement. And I would only just tell you that as we continue to review and analyse and monitor that (Defense) Secretary (Lloyd) Austin is comfortable with the strategic deterrent posture of the United States,” he told reporters.
Senator Joni Ernst, a combat veteran and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, slammed Putin for his comments on nuclear weapons.
“This would be a catastrophe and it would be the end of the Russian Federation. This type of action — going to nuclear war — would absolutely not be tolerated by anyone around this globe. And we certainly need to hear President Biden speak out against these types of actions,” he told Fox News in an interview.
“Vladimir Putin has gone a step too far making these threats, and we need our president to step up and be a leader, not a follower, but a leader and decry these types of announcements by Vladimir Putin. But again, this would truly be the end of the Russian Federation as the rest of the world would step up and destroy him,” he said.
Senator Jim Inhofe, ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a statement called on Putin to walk back his threats to go nuclear and to end this war - for which he is solely responsible.
“We have now witnessed the lengths he is willing to go to get what he wants: apartment buildings hit by missiles, civilians indiscriminately killed, Ukrainians taking to subway tunnels as makeshift bomb shelters, and desperate mothers with small children fleeing major cities in the bitter cold of Ukrainian winter,” he said.

The India government has advised Indian students stuck in war zone Ukraine to try and move towards the western side of the country and stay in nearby towns. The Ministry of External Affairs has also asked the students to not reach the border directly.
They should go to the border for crossing into neighbouring Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Moldova only after coordinating with the authorities, the Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters on Monday.
Reports said that over 8,000 Indians have left Ukraine since the MEA's first advisory before Russia launched the attack. THhe MEA has informed that so far 1,396 students have reached India in six evacuation flights under "Operation Ganga".
Three more flights are planned in the next 24 hours - two from Bucharest to Mumbai and Delhi, and one from Budapest to Delhi.
The MEA asked students and their parents not to panic about flight availability. The government has assured more flights to bring back India who cross the Ukrainian border.
