Hours after it was reported that &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo; Bomman and Bellie sent a legal notice to the Oscar-winning director Kartiki Gonsalves seeking a &lsquo;goodwill gesture&rsquo; of Rs 2 crore, the duo has now backtracked on the statement.
In a new video, Bomman has said that he has not sent a legal notice to Kartiki and added that he doesn&rsquo;t know the lawyer who sent it on their behalf.
He said that he spoke to Kartiki as well.
As reported by India Today, Bomman said, &lsquo;I did not say I would take back the case if my demands were met. I don&rsquo;t know what happened there. I don&rsquo;t who sent the legal notice or the advocate. I don&rsquo;t have any pieces of evidence. Kartiki spoke to me well and said that she&rsquo;d help me.&rsquo;
When he was asked if he will pursue the case, he said, &lsquo;What will I do with the case? They have promised to help me and given this job.&rsquo;
Earlier, in an interview, Bomman and Bellie claimed that the makers of &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo; used the money saved for their granddaughter&rsquo;s education for the expenses for the wedding scene in the short feature film. The couple also expressed disappointment over their alleged treatment post the Oscar win.
According to PTI, social activist-lawyer Pravin Raj filed a case against the filmmaker on Bomman and Bellie&rsquo;s behalf.
&lsquo;Both Bomman and Bellie are disappointed with (Kartiki) Gonsalves, who had promised them monetary help as well as help with the education of Bellie&rsquo;s granddaughter, while making the film. But she now refuses to give even a fraction of the enormous profits made by the film,&rsquo; he said.
As reported by several publications, Kartiki reacted to the claims and denied these accusations.

Tribal couple Bomman and Bellie, who starred in the Oscar-winning documentary &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo;, issued a legal notice to director Kartiki Gonsalves, seeking a &lsquo;goodwill gesture&rsquo; of ₹2 crore.
According to PTI, the legal notice states that the mahout couple was promised a home, a vehicle, and a financial lump sum as compensation for their time, with the amount to be determined based on the income generated from the project.
They were also introduced as the &lsquo;real heroes&rsquo; of the project to celebrities, sportspersons, and political leaders, which helped them gain recognition for their work, but the couple did not receive any financial compensation for their work as the filmmaker received all the monetary benefits from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Prime Minister of India.
Social activist-lawyer Pravin Raj, who claims to know the couple for over a decade, told PTI, &lsquo;Both Bomman and Bellie are disappointed with (Kartiki) Gonsalves, who had promised them monetary help as well as help with the education of Bellie&rsquo;s granddaughter, while making the film. But she now refuses to give even a fraction of the enormous profits made by the film.&rsquo;
As per the report, advocate Mohammed Mansoor, who is handling the case, received a reply notice from Sikhya Entertainment Pvt Ltd, on behalf of Kartiki, in which she has flatly refused any more help stating that she has already given money to the couple.
Sikhya Entertainment Pvt Ltd issued a statement to PTI, &lsquo;The goal in creating The Elephant Whisperers has always been to highlight elephant conservation, the tremendous efforts of the forest department and its mahouts Bomman and Bellie. Since its launch, the documentary has raised awareness of the cause and had a real impact on the mahouts and cavadis communities. Chief minister of Tamil Nadu M K Stalin has made donations towards assisting the 91 mahouts and cavadis who look after the state's elephants, constructing eco-friendly houses for the caretakers and developing an elephant camp in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.&rsquo;
It added, &lsquo;The documentary has been celebrated by heads of state across India, and the Academy Award is a moment of national pride that has brought widespread recognition for the work of mahouts like Bomman and Bellie. All claims made are untrue. We have deep respect for all of the contributors of this story, and remain driven by the desire to create positive change.&rsquo;

They also recalled that Gonsalves claimed to have paid remuneration but when they checked the bank account they only found Rs 60.

Tribal couple Bomman and Bellie, who are known for their work in the Oscar-winning documentary 'The Elephant Whisperers', have accused director Karitiki Gonsalves and Shikhya Entertainment of financial exploitation and harassment.
In an interview, the couple alleged that after the documentary received an Oscar, Kartiki, who shared a warm bond with them during the shoot, became distant and out of touch.
The couple also claimed that the money saved for Bellie's granddaughter's education was used to cover the expenses of the wedding scene in the film. Kartiki had assured them that the money would be returned to them, but she still hasn't paid. The couple also expressed disappointment with how they were treated post the film's success and were not even given the chance to hold the Oscar statuette during the felicitation. They also recalled that Gonsalves claimed to have paid remuneration but when they checked the bank account they only found Rs 60.
The filmmakers issued a statement in response to the allegations and said their primary goal was to create awareness about elephant conservation and acknowledge the efforts of the Forest Department and the mahouts.
They called the allegations untrue and said they have deep respect for all contributors to the story.

They received thunderous applause as they took to the podium. The event was also attended by Bomman and Bellie, who featured in the Best Documentary Short winner. The tribal couple, who lives on the periphery of Mudumalai National Park of Tamil Nadu, fosters orphaned elephants.
During the presser, the Ooty-born filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves said that she hopes that her big win would pave way for a whole generation of people who are stepping out in the world to showcase the diversity that India has, especially the local documentarians who may not have big budgets.
Speaking in Tamil, Bomman said at the event, &lsquo;I am a Kattunayakan. I am a protector of the forest. I feel immense pride that the stories of my babies have been put in front of the world. I want to thank Kartiki madam for bringing my story and the story of my children to the entire world. That is so important to me, beyond the prize, the pride I feel as a father.&rsquo;
His wife Belli added, &lsquo;I was apprehensive of raising Raghu earlier because I knew that one day Raghu will have to go in the wild, the world where he belongs. To take any child away from a mother is a painful experience. But when I came to know that Raghu&rsquo;s mother had passed away, I couldn&rsquo;t say no to being with him. How could you say no to such a beautiful baby?&rsquo;
She added, &lsquo;Bomman might feel a little shy. But I have no fear because I've lived in the forest. You people might think Oscar is big prize but for me, the real prize is coming and meeting all you wonderful people. It's wonderful to be able to come to a big city and meet people.&rsquo;
Producer Guneet Monga shared, &lsquo;This is the real celebration. Coming back home. That Oscar moment was surreal, humbling but the reeling in is happening now. The joy I feel... is the joy I see in everyone's eyes here.&rsquo;

Guneet Monga is currently on cloud nine as her film 'The Elephant Whisperers' won the Best Documentary Short Film award at the Oscars 2023. In a recent interview she revealed that she extremely disheartened' that her speech was cut off.
Speaking with Bombay Times, she said that her heart started racing as she couldn't have come so far and not be heard. 'There was a shock on my face. I just wanted to say it's India's first Oscar in Indian production, which is such a huge thing,' she said.
She further said that many people got offended when she didn't get a chance to deliver her speech. There were many videos and tweets on the social media expressing disappointment that she couldn&rsquo;t get to speak. This was India's moment taken away from her. But then, she thought it's okay, she'll go back there and she'll make sure that she's heard.&nbsp;

Music director AR Rahman believes that India is not sending the right movies to the Oscars. He said that despite being nominated Indian films don't win the award because Indian filmmakers fail see the film from a Westerner's perspective.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I occasionally observe that despite being nominated for an Oscar, our films are unsuccessful. Wrong movies are being nominated for the Oscars from India. And all I can say is DON'T. We must put ourselves in the shoes of others. To understand what is going on, I must put myself in the position of a Westerner. To understand what they are doing, I need to be in their position," he said.&nbsp;
Rahman, an Oscar winner himself, made the remarks in an interview to musician L Subramaniam conducted in January but the video of the conversation has been released now.&nbsp;
AR Rahman &nbsp;was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) which hosts the Oscars after his historic win in 2009. The singer-composer is now a regular voter and has been watching the films that qualify and get nominated. &nbsp;

In an interview with Times of India, the actor praised the music in the South film industry and how actors danced to the fast-paced song with so much energy.&nbsp; Saif said, &lsquo;What crazy steps that song is choreographed with. It&rsquo;s amazingly done. The South has these incredible dance steps and half-beats that they work with, I think I would have a heart attack if I did that.&rsquo;
The actor also called his South African vacation &lsquo;fabulous&rsquo; and said that the time he spends with his kids and family is always the best.

When the House convened on 14 March 2023, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar mentioned the victories of 'Naatu Naatu' as Best Original Song, and 'The Elephant Whisperers' as Best Documentary Short Film.
Dhankar called it a "moment of glory". Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said that it was a "great mark of recognition for India's women".
Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that it was a matter of great pride before joking that the government should not claim credit for the achievement.

The Congress party used the Oscar win of 'The Elephant Whisperers' documentary to attack the Narendra Modi government on 13 March 2023.
Former Union minister Jairam Ramesh said that it was "wonderful" that the Tamil film won an Oscar, and this might force the Modi administration to drop "elephant-unfriendly" amendments to the Wild Life Protection Act, which have been "widely opposed".
In 2010 the elephant had been declared the national heritage animal, the Congress general secretary noted. Ramesh had opposed many provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2022, when it was passed in the Rajya Sabha in December last year. PTI ASK DV DV

'The Elephant Whisperers' has become the first-ever film from India to win an Oscar. The documentary has been produced by Guneet Monga.
Earlier, two entries set in India &ndash;&lsquo;Period. End Of Sentence&rsquo; and &lsquo;Smile Pinki&rsquo;, won Oscars for Documentary Short. Monga was the executive produce for the former.

In 2009, at the 81st Academy Awards, music composer A R Rahman and sound engineer Resul Pookutty won the award for their work on Danny Boyle’s film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Rahman won two awards— Best Original Song for ‘Jai Ho’, which he shared with lyricist Gulzar, and Best Original Score, while Pookutty won for Best Sound Mixing.

The first Academy Award was won by Bhanu Athaiya, who bagged Best Costume Design in 1983 for the film &lsquo;Gandhi&rsquo;. The film, directed by Richard Attenborough, won eight Oscars that year including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley, who played Mahatma Gandhi.
In 1992, Indian director Satyajit Ray won an honorary Oscar &lsquo;in recognition of his rare mastery of the art of motion pictures, and of his profound humanitarian outlook, which has had an indelible influence on filmmakers and audiences throughout the world&rsquo;.
Ray, who accepted the award from his hospital bed via video one month before his death, called it &lsquo;the best achievement of my moviemaking career&rsquo;.

Sharing a poster of the film, she wrote that it's a 'trunk-filled with emotions'. Calling it one of the most heartwarming documentaries, Priyanka gave a huge shoutout to director Kartik Gonsavles and producer Guneet Monga for bringing the amazing story to life.
Guneet reshared the post on Instagram Stories to thank Priyanka and mentioned that she's 'over the moon'.
