Researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela have unveiled a new magnesium-based cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, presenting a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to cobalt, officials reported.
The innovation addresses key challenges in traditional lithium-ion batteries, including the high cost, limited availability, and environmental impact of cobalt, a crucial component in conventional designs.
Partha Saha, Associate Professor at NIT Rourkela&rsquo;s Ceramic Engineering Department, explained that cobalt-based cathodes are predominantly used in powering devices such as smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles (EVs). However, cobalt presents multiple issues, including its scarcity, price volatility, and the environmental and ethical concerns tied to its mining.
&ldquo;With the growing demand for electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries, cobalt supply is projected to fall short by 2050. This highlights the urgent need for alternative materials,&rdquo; said Saha.
Magnesium, an affordable and abundant element, is found in India&rsquo;s Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka regions. It is also more environmentally friendly compared to cobalt, making it an ideal replacement in cathode materials.
The research team has demonstrated that the magnesium-based cathode maintains 74.3% of its original capacity after 100 charge-discharge cycles, a significant improvement over traditional cobalt-based cathodes, which often suffer from rapid capacity loss. This new cathode also addresses cationic disorder in nickel sites, which is a common problem in traditional cathodes that results in capacity and voltage degradation.
Saha emphasized the wide-ranging implications of this development, particularly in producing affordable, high-performance batteries for EVs, contributing to India&rsquo;s renewable energy and sustainability goals. It also strengthens India's position in the global energy market by reducing reliance on imported materials for battery production.

This new iQOO 11 5G&nbsp; comes with a long list of notable firsts including the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, Samsung's 144Hz E6 LTPO AMOLED display, and UFS 4.0 memory.&nbsp;
DESIGN &amp; UTILITY
The iQoo 11 continues the brand's signature white finish and BMW's iconic racing stripes. However, the use of silicon leather for the back panel is a welcome addition. Not only does it look visually appealing but the leather-finish also improves the grip of the phone. Meanwhile, these stripes, which are now made of fiberglass, add a little more durability to the design.
The back panel also has an oversized camera island with metal housing and large rings around the camera lenses, which looks quite nice.. I was pleasantly surprised to find that despite its size, the island doesn't protrude too much. This means that when I use the phone on a flat surface, it doesn't feel wobbly or unstable.

The back side features a curved design at the edges, which gives the impression of a slimmer profile . Around the front is a brilliant 6.78-inch display, which seems to have slightly thick bezels around it, and the panel itself is flat, which may appeal to gamers because it doesn't have any curved edges that can sometimes cause accidental touches. The screen also gets Gorilla Glass Victus protection, making it fairly scratch resistant.
The rest of the phone is held together by an aluminum frame and has an IR blaster and microphone on the top, as well as a SIM card tray and USB Type-C port on the bottom. The power button and volume rocker, which provide a nice tactile feel, are located on the right side of the phone.&nbsp;
One thing to note is that the iQOO 11 only gets an IP52 dust and water resistance rating. Moreover, the phone has no wireless charging or expandable storage, and the maximum onboard storage available is 256GB, so you may have to get used to the idea of cloud storage for backing up very large files.&nbsp;
DISPLAY &amp; AUDIO
The iQoo 11 flaunts a stunning display that is perfect for gaming and watching videos. It features a high-quality 2K E6 AMOLED panel with HDR10+ and an impressive 1800 nits peak brightness, so there's no problem using it under direct sunlight.
On top of all of that, the screen also boasts a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, ensuring smooth and fluid animations. There's dynamic refresh here as well, thanks to LTPO tech, and this allows the device to adapt to the content being displayed on the screen. The speakers on the iQOO 11 are also noteworthy, delivering powerful bass and clear sound.
Additionally, the iQOO 11 also has an x-axis vibration engine that provides good haptic feedback and while the in-screen fingerprint sensor is not as large as the one on the iQOO 9 Pro, it is fast and reliable.
PERFORMANCE &amp; BATTERY
The iQOO 11 is the first smartphone in India to feature the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. It boasts significant improvements over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, including a 35% increase in CPU performance, and &nbsp;a 25% bump in GPU performance.
The chipset also now gets support for faster technologies like LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0. Aside from the latest Snapdragon processor, the phone also gets a new V2 chip, developed by the parent company, vivo, which enhances the quality of night-time photos and videos, as well as providing a boost to gaming performance.
There's a lot of amazing tech packed in here that helps in transforming the iQOO 11 into an extremely powerful smartphone. It consistently ranks at the top of benchmark charts and is definitely one of the most impressive devices I have tested. From lightning-fast app switching to seamless web browsing and photo editing, it truly shines in every task I've thrown its way.
Of course, it's also a great choice for gaming, with its top of the line hardware able to handle even the most demanding games without breaking a sweat.
In the battery department, the iQOO 11 definitely stands out, thanks to its large 5000mAh battery. With moderate daily use, you can expect to have about 50% battery life remaining at the end of the day. And when it does need a quick top up, the included 120W charger will have it fully charged in just 28 minutes. With a 15-minute charge, you can get an impressive 78 percent charge.
SOFTWARE
iQOO 11 ships with the latest Android 13 operating system, and is covered by Vivo's FunTouch skin. lt includes handy features like a customizable home screen with granular controls of UI color schemes and the ability to pin apps to prevent others from accessing them. Overall, FunTouch OS 13 is functional but not as highly regarded as other skins.
Another issue with Funtouch is its abundance of pre-installed apps, some of which cannot be removed or disabled. This results in a cluttered interface and a less streamlined user experience.&nbsp;
On the plus side, iQOO's software always nails the gaming features. For example, Game Space provides a convenient way to access your installed games and track your gaming statistics such as total playtime and most played games.
You can also access the ultra game mode a special in-game menu by swiping from the left side of the screen. This lets you switch between different power modes to give you the best gaming performance. There are also options like reject Background calls and Block notifications that help you stay undisturbed while gaming.
As for software updates, The iQOO 11 is set to receive three major OS updates and three years of security patches. While that isn't bad by any means , it is worth noting that Samsung offers up to four years of OS updates and five years of security patches.&nbsp;
CAMERAS
This phone has a triple camera setup that includes a 50MP Samsung GN5 main sensor, but this time around it lacks the super steady gimbal found in the iQOO 9 Pro, and instead has a more standard optical image stabilization system. The primary camera is joined by a 13MP 2X telephoto zoom lens, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 16MP front facing camera.
Photos taken with the 50MP camera in daylight have good dynamic range and color saturation, and generally offer a lot of sharpness and detail. The telephoto camera is also able to produce clear, high-quality photos with good noise control when using the 2X zoom. However, it would have been better to have a Periscope zoom lens that offers at least 5x optical zoom, as well as more consistent color matching between the main and 2X lenses.
The portrait mode offers reliable edge detection and the extended focal length allows it to produce attractive and natural background blur.
Ultra wide photos have decent sharpness and dynamic range, but again the colors differ from those of the main camera and the overall quality is just average. On the other hand, low light performance with the main camera is excellent, most likely thanks to that V2 chip working its magic behind the scenes.&nbsp;
Selfies taken with the 16 megapixel front-facing camera come out with good detail and sharpness, but the portrait mode can struggle with edge detection at times.&nbsp;
In the video department, IQOO 11's rear camera lets you record at up to 8K at 30 fps, 4K at 60 fps, and 1080p at 60 fps. Footage comes out looking really crisp, particularly at 4K 60 fps, and digital stabilization helps ensure smooth pans. Night time shooting isn't nearly as good as what iQOO advertises but the main still retains good detail and color saturation.
VERDICT
The iQOO 11 is a fantastic all-around smartphone that excels in performance thanks to its powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Additionally, the pricing of the base variant at 59,999 Rupees appears to be quite competitive. It will be interesting to see how it compares to its rivals in 2023, but overall it is a very solid offering from iQOO.

In Medium post published on Saturday, Lemoine declared LaMDA had advocated for its rights “as a person,” and revealed that he had engaged in conversation with LaMDA about religion, consciousness, and robotics.Google called LaMDA their "breakthrough conversation technology" last year. The conversational artificial intelligence is capable of engaging in natural-sounding, open-ended conversations.

Rs 1300 crores were sent out erroneously to 100 HDFC Bank customers turning them into sudden crorepatis all due to a technical glitch. The country’s largest private lender faced yet another tech turmoil as a glitch ended up depositing RS 13 crore each in 100 bank accounts attached to the bank’s T Nagar branch over the weekend. However HDFC Bank caught the error in minutes and account holders who were shocked to see their balances were unable to access them. Reports indicate the lender reversed the error within the next few hours but customers were left stranded as they could not access their accounts even for emergent use. According to the private lender, the issue arose due to the introduction of a software patch as part of maintenance during the early hours on May 29. Further, the bank is investigating if the excess money deposited in the accounts has been withdrawn.

Rs 1300 crores&nbsp;were sent out erroneously to 100 HDFC&nbsp;Bank customers turning them into sudden crorepatis&nbsp;all due to a technical glitch.&nbsp; The country&rsquo;s largest private lender faced yet another tech turmoil as a glitch ended up depositing RS 13 crore&nbsp;each in 100 bank accounts attached to the bank&rsquo;s T Nagar branch over the weekend.&nbsp; However HDFC&nbsp;Bank caught the error in minutes and account holders who were shocked to see their balances were unable to access them. Reports indicate the lender reversed the error within the next few hours but customers were left stranded as they could not access their accounts even for urgent use.&nbsp; According to the private lender, the issue arose due to the introduction of a software patch as part of maintenance during the early hours on May 29. Further, the bank is investigating if the excess money deposited in the accounts has been withdrawn.

The clause which has been in place since 2007 restricts resigning employees to join 'named competitors' for 6 months. Named competitors include TCS, Wipro, Accenture, HCL Tech , Cognizant and IBM. 
Raising a voice against this a Pune-based IT employees union has written to the labour ministry and stated that non-compete clauses in the employment agreements offered by IT major Infosys to its IT as well as BPO employees are “illegal”.Infosys, in its statement, said that it is a standard business practice in many parts of the world for employment contracts to include controls of reasonable scope, duration to protect the confidentiality of information, customer connection, other legitimate business interests. So what does this non compete clause really comprise of, here is a look: For the period of six months after leaving Infosys, employees will not

 Accept any offer of employment from any customer, (with whom I worked) in the twelve months immediately preceding my termination.
Accept any offer of employment from a Named Competitor of Infosys, if my employment with such Named Competitor would involve me having to work with a Customer with whom I had worked in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the termination of my employment with Infosys.

India's Techade: Aspirations and Actions with Rajeev Chandrasekhar at NTLF 2022

Data protection is a discourse that is some years old. You know, as a as a member of Parliament, I was one of the few that actually approached the Supreme Court on this issue. We have our draught legislation that then went to Parliament, and now the parliament has given it back to government over the Commons on it. And but the origins of that bill are about three the the the provenance of the bill are about three years old and a significant amount of changes have happened since that. So there is a natural number of people who are commenting on and writing to me, talking to me about whether the bill is needs to be further improved, further discussed whether the bill meets the full spectrum of the need to be a and flexible given the changes in the future. So those that discussion is on. Give me my own view on this is and I say this and I've said this in the past that it is important to get the next bit of legislation very right. And I don't mean very right in terms of the details of the right. As much as the ability for it to be flexible and evolutionary, I think we would be making a big mistake if we are moving to legislation that is very hard coded, very embedded in terms of principles that may not be necessarily evaluable and are very, let us say, cutting. And so and for all of those reasons, I think the fact that we need a new digital law because our current legislation is 20 years old, the idea that we and we need a more of a law for the internet and that we have this data protection law that addresses the issues of the citizen's right to privacy and lays out the rules for all of the internet. It is. But you know, the flipside of that is we want to make sure that the the momentum of our Start-Up ecosystem is not blunted by even one percentage if if the regime hints at a higher degree of compliance costs and higher degree of compliance bureaucracy. So these are all issues that you know, frankly, the prime minister has always said in these areas, you must have as much public consultation as possible. And you know, we are talking to people. The bill has been referred back to the ministry as you know, and I have been flooded with letters from all kinds of industry associations, critique, you know, critical of it, supporting it and so on and so forth. So we will continue this conversation for a little bit longer, in my opinion, because I mean, I would not want to just rushing into something, and I have to, in a sense, then go back with more amendments and correct things and so on and so forth. You're absolutely right. The goal needs to be needs to get a signal that the Indian cyberspace to safe, trusted. It's open, it's accountable and most importantly, very predictable in terms of what the jurisprudence around it is. And I think that is our mission and that is our goal and we will work at it

Debjani&nbsp;Ghosh:&nbsp;Now lets switch tracks a bit to talk about talent, which is also another big charter that you hold. You know, the prime minister rightly said that in coming years, India will be the biggest supplier of workforce to the world. Completely agree with that. In fact, in the in the report that we just launched, It was interesting to see that over five million workforce that the tech industry employs nearly around 1.6 million digital. That means one out of three are digitally skilled and the number is just growing every day. It was also interesting to see that, given that globally there's a gap between demand and supply in digital talent, India actually has the shortest or has the lowest score of twenty one point one percent gap between demand and supply, whereas countries like US UK are in the high 27 to 30 percent. So we actually have a huge advantage there. But today the needs are changing, especially for our industry. What we are seeing is people want companies are hiring more for your, you know, the way you think, how fast you can learn and the skills can be taught. You know, it's more for your attitude than your aptitude and your aptitudes with what we have, we are training them on. So question to you is, is what you thought and how we can change the education, the core education system to focus on growing this, the cultural for a generation of learners curiosity, you know, people who collaborate, people who ask questions, sort of how do we instil that curiosity and love for learning versus just embodying knowledge? Is that is that a goal and how do we enable it?

Minister Rajeev&nbsp;Chandrasekhar: Well, I think that is a very good question, and it is a very relevant question, more relevant, more than more relevant even now. Even so, in the post COVID, you know that we are living in bed and there was a demand for a new renewal of skills. There is a demand for more and more digital skills, and there is a demand for more and more people to skill themselves digitally. So, you know, there is a completely, in my opinion, a new paradigm to learning that is evolving post-COVID during COVID and post-COVID. And there is a new part of what people want to learn. So both these things are happening almost simultaneously. Look, as far as if you just step back a minute to look at where India is today on the education, learning and skilling space we have now in 2020. So let me give you a little backstory in the five years since the prime minister launched the Skill India mission. I don't know if you have it, but this is a good number for your audience to know. The government skilling programmes skilling alone, not education, by the way, has killed all 50 million Indians, five crore Indians. And of course, these are all primarily blue collar, with some small percentage of the white collar space in the tech space. But I'm putting the number out there not to show the efficacy of our schooling system, but to show you the numbers that are in the skilling network at any given point in time. Now, fast forward to 2020. The government has created, in my opinion or enacted the the biggest reform in education since independence, which is a new education policy which in a sense converges vocational training and education. The conventional education in old people, the new model for children where they can choose higher education when they get out of school, they can choose skilling and vocations when they get out of school and go. They're can to sports. And all three are essentially independent career tracks that are available to them that they can start thinking about wandering about experiencing whilst in school. So it is not that you end up with the standard and suddenly are left with either an option of dropping out of school or going into a bachelor's programme in that you get admission. So I think there is that fundamental reform that has happened. The second thing is on the 15th of July, about eight days after I was given this responsibility, the prime minister told us passed us with a reimagining skilling in this new post-COVID world. So we are doing a lot of things on skilling that go to the heart of your question, which is how do we take those who are skilled who need to be? How do we take people who are skilled, who need to be upskill? And how do we take people who have absolutely no skill and make them skilled? And this could be a graduate becoming a tech tech, getting into the tech workforce? It could be a tech workforce who is going up the value chain and learning and other forms of. What and it could be somebody who is completely outside the system who has never been in the tech space and wants to be part of the digital space and gets in there through a series of skilling skills and programming and coding and then getting into the into the workforce. One thing is sure the amongst the young Indian today, whether he's in Lucknow, he's in kahoma, he's in he or she is in Zinogre or in Bengaluru or uni or Jubilee or Dawa. The appetite for all our young Indians to get on this education, skilling, micro entrepreneurship, you know, workforce of sort of the runway is tremendous. And I think, if anything, I'm excited about his responsibility and excited by what we are doing. But sometimes always overawed by the the sense of expectation and the the the the the audience that we are addressing. Because India is such a huge country and one of the things that the prime minister has done is, in a sense, unlock and unleash ambitions and aspirations of every Indian across India. And so that can be a little more inspiring sometimes and breathtaking in terms of I just finished the programme today. It was a political programme and a party programme. And on this all the questions that I had to take what to do with skilling. So and I think that there's a lot of good and other people are aware of that. They are very aspirational, but it puts a lot of pressure on us to deliver exactly what they want. And you know, we are working with future scares prime with people such as yourself on the higher end of the skill matrix on how to address the white-collar demands of the world. And I was recently in Dubai and I was at a meeting breakfast meeting with a large number of traditional labour, let's say, labour companies or workforce outsourcing companies. And they were all now interested in rejigging and reimagining their engagement with India from being purely blue collar to now blue collar and white collar. Because every economy is digitising businesses as far away as Africa digitising, and they all want the white collar capabilities as much as they want our blue collar. So I think it's a good opportunity for India, and we are we are very engaged on it and I hope we will deliver.
