Days after a clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Arunachal's Tawang, military commanders of both sides held the 17th round of talks which began after the Ladakh clashes of 2020.
The joint statement issued on 22 December 2022 said that the talks were "frank and in-depth" keeping in line with the guidance provided by the leaders of the two countries to work for the resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest.
"In the interim, the two sides agreed to maintain the security and stability on the ground in the Western sector," the statement said.

The eastern Ladakh region is referred to as Western sector by the government.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday lashed out at the government for "stubbornly" refusing a discussion on the India-China border issue in Parliament, and said its silence on matters of serious concern has become its defining feature.
Addressing party MPs at the general body meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the central hall of Parliament, she also accused the government of delegitimising the judiciary and termed it as a "troubling new development".
Referring to the border situation, the former Congress president said disallowing a parliamentary debate on such a serious issue "shows disrespect for our democracy and reflects poorly on the government's intentions".

She said a frank discussion strengthens the nation's response and it is the duty of the government of the day to inform the public and explain its policies and actions.
Noting that the "continuing incursions by China on our border is a matter of serious concern", she said the nation stands with vigilant soldiers who repelled these attacks under difficult conditions.
Gandhi said when facing a significant national challenge, it has been the tradition in our country to bring Parliament into confidence.
"The government, however, stubbornly refuses to allow a discussion on the issue in Parliament. As a result, Parliament, political parties and the people remain ignorant of the true situation on the ground," she said.
"Unfortunately, silence on matters of serious concern has become the defining feature of this government's tenure. While blocking debate, the government is also actively engaged in targeting the opposition and any questioning voices, manipulating the media and undermining the institutions which stand in their way. This is happening not only in the Centre, but also in every state where the ruling party governs," she charged.
She said a debate can shed light on several critical questions like why China is emboldened to continually attack India and what preparations have been made to repel these attacks, and what more needs to be done.
"What is the Government's policy to deter China from future incursions? Given that we continue to have a severe trade deficit with China, importing far more than we export, why is there no economic response to China's military hostility? What is the government's diplomatic outreach to the global community," she asked.

Days after revealing that Chinese soldiers tried aggressive manoeuvres in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang, the Indian government has decided to install more mobile towers in the area to improve connectivity.
BSNL and Bharti Airtel will set up 23 new mobile towers in Tawang. The district administration had reportedly asked for 43 new towers.
"The existing towers were not giving the desired services, causing problems not only for the defence forces but also the civilians living along the border," Tawang Deputy Commissioner KN Damo said.
Earlier, there was no mobile network in the border areas but the situation has changed now with residents enjoying internet service and mobile connectivity even at Bum-La and Y-Junction but more improvement is needed, he added.

The officer said that all preparations are in place for installing the new towers, but winter would pose a challenge, which might get the process delayed.

China's latest misadventure at the border has confirmed that it wants to keep the disputed boundary with India boiling. However, China's stunts in Ladakh in 2020 have meant that the Indian military has been continuously stepping up its preparedness along the Line of Actual Control.
Let's take a look at some of the most destructive weapons that the Indian Army has placed at hotspots along the China boundary.

One of the newest acquisitions by the Army's Aviation Wing is the LCH Prachand. It is a light combat helicopter whose specialties include high-altitude operations, and attacking enemies on both land and air. It will be placed along the LAC in eastern Ladakh when the first unit is deployed in 2023.

The next explosive weapon is the K-9 Vajra. It is a tracked, self-propelled Howitzer gun. Its special features include its high speed allowing quick deployment. Also, it can destroy targets at up to 50 km in the rarefied air of high-altitude areas. The K-9 Vajra is meant to counter China in Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeast. It has already been deployed in Ladakh, and the Army reportedly plans to acquire 200 units for the other locations.
Another important weapon in the Army's artillery is the M777, an ultra-light Howitzer gun. Since it is lightweight, it can be easily deployed in hard terrain, and can also be carried by Chinook helicopters. It is strengthening the Army in the eastern sector, with 3 regiments deployed in the Northeast.
To boost its airpower, the Indian Army is also looking at loitering munitions, which are suicide-attack drones. They will give a boost to the Army's capability to track targets and conduct precision strikes. They will be placed along the LAC with China, and the process of procurement is already underway.

For explosive firepower at long distances, the Army has the Pinaka, a multiple rocket launcher system. It can fire a variety of ammunition. Its new version has a longer range and better accuracy. It has been placed along LAC in Northeast, with one regiment deployed in Arunachal Pradesh. The Army reportedly plans to get 6 more.
A major addition to the Army's arsenal in the near future will be the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, or ATAGS. Its special features include rapid and sustained rates of fire with longer range. It will be deployed along the LAC. The ATAGS is in its final stages of testing and induction is expected soon.
While the Army waits for its newer guns, some legacy weapons are still in use, like the Bofors Howitzer. Its newer version is more precise and faster in firing rounds. In forward areas along the LAC, the upgraded Bofors guns are a big boost for the Army.
The other legacy weapon is the L70, an air defence gun. It has been upgraded for automatic tracking of aerial threats. It has been added to the arsenal along the LAC in the eastern sector. The upgraded guns were deployed around 15 km from the disputed border in 2021.
Apart from firepower, intelligence-gathering is an important task near the hot border. For this, the Army is looking at surveillance drones with a range of 80 km, and endurance of 4 hours. These will improve surveillance in difficult and mountainous terrain along the LAC. The Army is currently assessing different options before acquisition.
The military's arsenal is expected to get deadlier as more and more made-in-India weapons are developed and finalised, like the Dhanush gun system.
Beijing appears to be playing a double-game, trying to continue military aggression, even as both sides sit at the negotiation table. In such a situation, the deployment of potent and effective weapons at the border are a necessary deterrent.

On Monday, the Indian Army said troops from the two sides clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector and the face-off led to "minor injuries" to a few personnel from both sides".
The face-off took place amid the over 30-month border standoff between the two sides in eastern Ladakh.
All frontline air bases and some key Advanced Landing Grounds in the Northeast are set to be involved in the exercise, PTI reported quoting sources.
The Army and IAF have been maintaining a high state of operational readiness along the LAC in the Arunachal Pradesh and the Sikkim sector for over two years following the eastern Ladakh row.
The IAF scrambled fighter jets last week following China's increasing air activities on its side of the LAC in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.
The deployment of some aerial platforms including drones by China in the region preceded the Chinese attempts on December 9 to unilaterally change the status quo in the Yangtse area of the Tawang sector, according to reports.&nbsp;
They said a number of Chinese drones flew close to the LAC prompting the IAF to scramble the jets and increase the overall combat readiness.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday told Parliament that the Indian troops bravely thwarted the attempt by Chinese PLA from "unilaterally" changing the status in Yangtse area of the Tawang sector and there were no fatalities or serious casualties to the Indian troops in the scuffle.
"On December 9, PLA troops tried to transgress the LAC in Yangtse area of Tawang Sector and unilaterally change the status quo. The Chinese attempt was contested by our troops in a firm and resolute manner," Singh said.
"The ensuing face off led to a physical scuffle in which the Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from transgressing into our territory and compelled them to return to their posts," he said.&nbsp;

Indian and Chinese troops were engaged in a brief face-off near Yangtse in October last year as well and it was resolved following talks between local commanders of the two sides according to established protocols.
The ties between India and China nosedived significantly following the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades. Both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers and heavy weaponry.
Following the eastern Ladakh standoff, the Indian Army significantly bolstered its operational capabilities along the LAC in the eastern theatre.
The army put into place an effective surveillance apparatus and there has been a substantial improvement in overall monitoring of the areas in the last two years, military officials said.

The Opposition led by the Congress alleged that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's statement in Parliament on the Sino-India border clash was "incomplete" and demanded the government discusses the issue in Parliament.
The opposition party also alleged that national security and territorial integrity are being impinged upon by brazen Chinese transgressions as the government remains a "mute spectator".
It further accused the government of "diplomatic failure" and said that is why China is indulging in such clashes along the border.
The party claimed the Centre was diverting public attention by raising other issues like cancellation of FCRA registration of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said every Indian deserves to know the truth on what is happening at the border and that is why his party has demanded a discussion on the same in Parliament.
Congress spokesperson Gaurav Gogoi said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has lost its pre-eminent position in Southeast Asia and that the prime minister hides behind its ministers whenever an issue of national security comes up.
Kharge said despite the demand to ensure status quo ante as of April 2020, China has refused to vacate our territory and has been deliberately taking shelter behind the statement of the prime minister dated June 20, 2020, saying that no one has entered into our territory. Even the ongoing talks with the Chinese for a push back from our territory have come to a standstill, he said.

Chinese foreign minister spokeserson Wang Wenbin said that the China-India border situation is stable overall and added that the two sides maintained unobstructed dialogue on the border issue through diplomatic and military channels.

In its first reaction on the clashes along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang on December 9 , China has said that situation remains stable on the India border, according to news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Hours after the comments by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on the Sino-India border situation, Senior Colonel Long Shaohua, spokesman of the Western Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), issued a statement, claiming that the clash on December 9 took place when its troops on regular patrol on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) were blocked by Indian soldiers.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wenbin addressing a media briefing said the two sides have maintained smooth communication on border-related issues through diplomatic and military channels.
Wang, however, declined to provide details of the December 9 clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers at the Yangtse area of Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang sector.
Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh made a statement in Parliament in New Delhi on the incident in the Tawang sector.
"The Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from encroaching on our territory, and forced them to withdraw to their posts. Some soldiers from both sides were injured in the skirmish," he said in his statement in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Following his statement in the Lok Sabha, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed members of the Rajya Sabha regarding the violent clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh.
The minister said, "On 9 Dec 2022, Chinese PLA troops encroached across LAC in Tawang sector's Yangtse area in an attempt to unilaterally change the status quo. Indian Army bravely prevented PLA from encroaching on Indian territory, and forced them to return to their posts. Some soldiers on both sides suffered some injuries."
Following Rajnath Singh's statement, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman appealed to Opposition to not seek a discussion on the issue.

Harivansh said, "I would like to give some examples from past proceedings of this House. In Session 210, on 6 March 2007, Naxal attack on Sunil Mahato, MP Lok Sabha; in Session 2012, on 26 Nov 2007, serial bomb blasts in UP; in Session 215, on 13 March 2009, follow-up Mumbai terrorist act; in Session 215, on 18 Feb 2009, situation in Sri Lanka - on these sensitive topics, questions and discussions were not allowed. Similarly, on today's issue, I appeal that queries not be taken."
However, Opposition MPs protested the Deputy Chairman's decision by raising slogans like "charcha karo", i.e. have a discussion, and "charcha se kyo darte ho", i.e. why are you scared of a debate.

No one can capture one inch of land till the Narendra Modi government is in power, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday as the opposition demanded a discussion on clashes between Indian and Chinese forces along the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh.
Addressing reporters outside Parliament House, Shah also said the Congress had raised the border issue in Parliament to avoid questions on the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation's FCRA [Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act] cancellation.
The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF), he alleged, had got Rs 1.35 crore from the Chinese Embassy. Its registration was cancelled as this was not according to FCRA rules, he said.

"India's permanent seat in the UN Security Council was sacrificed because of Nehru's love for China," Shah said.
He applauded Indian soldiers for their valour. "I want to say it clearly... till the time the BJP government led by Prime Minister Modi is in power, no one can capture an inch of our land," Shah said.

Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Tuesday following opposition protests over the issue of clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.
Indian and Chinese troops clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 and the face-off resulted in "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides", the Indian Army said on Monday.
The clash near Yangtse along the LAC in the sensitive sector took place last Friday amid the over 30-month border standoff between the two sides in eastern Ladakh.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will make a statement on the matter at 12 noon.
However, the opposition members did not relent and continued to protests and sought immediate discussion on the issue.

The Defence Minister confirmed that a few soldiers were injured in the face-off, however, none of the Indian soldiers died or suffered any serious injury.
