The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday withdrew the general consent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to carry out a probe in the state, joining a list of non-BJP-ruled states who have done so earlier.
The move comes on a day when state Electricity and Prohibition and Excise Minister V Senthil Balaji was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate, a central probe agency, in a money laundering case.
A Home Department release said that according to a specific provision of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 (Central Act XXV of 1946) the CBI has to secure prior permission from the state government concerned before going there to conduct a probe.
"The Tamil Nadu government has today issued orders withdrawing the general consent given to certain types of cases in 1989 and 1992 under the aforesaid rule. Accordingly, the CBI has to henceforth get the Tamil Nadu government's prior approval for conducting an investigation in the state," it said.

Spokesperson of BJP's Uttar Pradesh unit Prashant Umrao tweeted that "12 migrants from Bihar were hung to death in Tamil Nadu for speaking in Hindi". Umrao tagged Bihar chief minister Tejashwi Yadav and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin in the tweet.
The tweet has since been deleted.&nbsp;
The Tamil Nadu police have charged Prashant Umrao for spreading enmity between people on linguistic and regional basis.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin assured the safety of migrant workers to its Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar over the phone.
Furthermore, MK Stalin has issued a helpline for the migrant workers to ring in case they face any harassment in Tamil Nadu and assured complete safety to all migrant workers as per reports.

Prabhu's family alleged that not a single DMK cadre has come to their house to help them and demanded CM intervention to help the family get justice.
The police have filed an FIR in the matter and all nine including the DMK councillor were arrested by the police.

Stalin said the government&rsquo;s stern efforts to control the spread of the virus have resulted in cases dropping from more than 36,000 at the end of May to around 1,600 now.
Stalin added that the surge in cases in certain districts of the state and border areas of neighbouring Kerala&nbsp;were being closely monitored and additional preventive measures were being taken.
Stalin said the government has provided a few relaxations considering the livelihood aspects of the people. Tamil Nadu extends lockdown, eases Covid curbs

Tamil Nadu government on Sunday released fresh standard operating procedure&nbsp;for the month of September. While extending the lockdown in the state till September 30 with several relaxations, the AIADMK&nbsp;government in a statement said said that the Sunday lockdown and e-pass system has been scrapped. It also added that places of worship will be opened to the public soon, and metro will be made functional from September 7. The statement also added that public transportation will also start within districts.
