First suicide pod to be used soon in Switzerland at $20 for service

The capsule's potential use has raised a host of legal and ethical questions in Switzerland, reigniting debate on assisted dying.

An assisted dying group expects a portable suicide pod to be used for the first time in Switzerland, potentially within months, providing death without medical supervision, it said Wednesday.
The space-age looking Sarco capsule, first unveiled in 2019, replaces the oxygen inside it with nitrogen, causing death by hypoxia. It would cost $20 to use.
The Last Resort organisation said it saw no legal obstacle to its use in Switzerland, where the law generally allows assisted suicide if the person commits the lethal act themselves.
"Since we have people indeed queueing up, asking to use the Sarco, it's very likely that it will take place pretty soon," The Last Resort's chief executive Florian Willet told a press conference.
"I cannot imagine a more beautiful way (to die), of breathing air without oxygen until falling into an eternal sleep," he added.
<h2>'Press this button' to die&nbsp;</h2>
The person wishing to die must first pass a psychiatric assessment of their mental capacity -- a key legal requirement.
The person climbs into the purple capsule, closes the lid, and is asked automated questions such as who they are, where they are and if they know what happens when they press the button.
"'If you want to die', the voice says in the processor, 'Press this button'," said Sarco inventor Philip Nitschke, a leading global figure in right-to-die activism.
He explained that once the button is pressed, the amount of oxygen in the air plummets from 21 percent to 0.05 percent in less than 30 seconds.
"Within two breaths of air of that low level of oxygen, they will start to feel disorientated, uncoordinated and slightly euphoric before losing consciousness," Nitschke said.
"They will then stay in that state of unconsciousness for... around about five minutes before death will take place," he added.
The Sarco monitors the oxygen level in the capsule, the person's heart rate and the oxygen saturation of the blood.
"We will be able to see quite quickly when that person has died," said Nitschke.
As for someone changing their mind at the very last minute, Nitschke said: "Once you press that button, there's no way of going back."
<h2>First user&nbsp;</h2>
No decision has been made over the date and location of the first death, or who the first user might be.
Such details would not be made public until after the event.
"We really don't want a person's desire for a peaceful passing Switzerland to turn into a media circus," said lawyer Fiona Stewart, who is on The Last Resort's advisory board.
She said it would be used "in a very secluded location, in the beauty of nature", though it had to be on private property.
Asked if the first use would be this year, she replied: "I would say yes."
The minimum age limit is set at 50, though if someone over 18 was seriously ill, "we would not want to deny a suffering person based on their age", said Stewart.
The capsule can be reused.
Nitschke's Exit International organisation, which owns the Sarco, is a non-profit group funded by donations.
Stewart said the only cost for the user would be 18 Swiss francs ($20) for the nitrogen.

The Wallis cantonal doctor has banned its use, while other cantons have voiced reservations.
"It's our understanding that there's no legal impediment to the Sarco being used... despite what any canton says," Stewart insisted.
Nitrogen, which forms 78 percent of the air, is "not a medical product... it's not a dangerous weapon", she added.
"We're looking to de-medicalise assisted suicide, because a Sarco doesn't require a doctor to be in close proximity," said Stewart.
Only once a person has died would the Swiss authorities be called.
The 3D-printable capsule cost more than 650,000 euros ($710,000) to research and develop in the Netherlands over 12 years.
Stewart said it had been tested with instruments in a workshop in Rotterdam over the last 12 months. It has not been tested on humans or animals.
The current Sarco could only accommodate someone five feet and eight inches (1.73 metres) tall. The development team is seeking to build a double Sarco so couples could end their lives together.
Future Sarcos could cost around 15,000 euros. The Sarco will never be permitted for use in capital punishment, said The Last Resort.

The space-age-looking Sarco capsule, first unveiled in 2019, helps terminally ill patients cross the bridge to the other side. The suicide pod is often dubbed as the &lsquo;Tesla of euthanasia&rdquo;.&nbsp;
Here is all you need to know about it.
<h3>What is a suicide pod and how does it work?</h3>
The suicide pod was created by Dr Philip Nitschke, a vocal advocate for assisted dying. He claims that the pod will help users die swiftly and painlessly.&nbsp;However, the prosecutors in Switzerland's Schaffhausen Canton said a few days back that if anyone is caught assisting someone in using the pods, they can face nearly five years of imprisonment, as reported by Swiss media.
The Last Resort organisation revealed that they are not facing any legal obstacle to its use in Switzerland, as the law generally allows assisted suicide if the person commits the lethal act himself.
How does it work?
The first step to enter the suicide pod is to pass a psychiatric assessment of their mental capacity -- a key legal requirement.

<h3>What is the Euthanasia law in Switzerland?</h3>
The Swiss Criminal Code of 1942 allows adults to assist in another person's suicide, provided the motive is not "selfish." Since 1985, organizations have been legally providing assisted suicide services under specific regulations. Doctors are allowed to prescribe and administer drugs for this purpose. Assisted suicide is lawful regardless of the condition of the person requesting it.
<h3> Which countries have legalised Euthanasia?</h3>
Assisted dying and euthanasia are legal in the Netherlands. It is legal if the patient is enduring unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement. Euthanasia and assisted dying is also allowed in Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada and Colombia.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, assisted suicide is allowed in California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington state, Vermont and the District of Columbia.
<h3>Is Euthanasia legal in India?</h3>
In India, both euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal. However, in 2018, &nbsp;the Supreme Court legalised passive euthanasia. They permit &lsquo;living wills&rsquo;, allowing people to decide in advance about the course of treatment, in a space where they cannot make decisions. The court ruled that &ldquo;a person having the mental capacity to make an informed decision has the right to refuse medical treatment, including withdrawal from life-saving devices&rdquo;.

The takeover of Swiss bank Credit Suisse leaves many sports stars, teams and tournaments with a big question mark hanging over their lucrative sponsorship deals.
The Swiss national football team, the country's top football division, tennis great Roger Federer, golf star Sergio Garcia and Zurich's new stadium were all sponsored by the bank, which is being taken over by Swiss rival UBS.
The deal was hastily arranged on Sunday afer Credit Suisse's share price plunged.
Golf and equestrian events also relied on Credit Suisse money, as did the Swiss Sport Aid Foundation, which backs talented young athletes in minority sports.
"Our sponsorships reflect our passion for excellence, sustainability, and partnership," Credit Suisse boasts.
The Neue Zurcher Zeitung newspaper said that no matter how much Credit Suisse got embroiled in scandals or rejigged its strategies, "the bank has always been a reliable partner for sports".
"For the time being, we will continue our corresponding commitments unchanged," a Credit Suisse spokesman told AFP.
But UBS, which has its own portfolio of sports sponsorships focusing on Formula One, athletics and ice hockey, may not necessarily continue with the deals.
Football focus Credit Suisse has been the main sponsor of the Swiss Football Association (SFA) governing body since 1993.
The men's national team, ranked 12th in the world, has enjoyed some of its best years since the bank came on board.
Having only appeared at one World Cup between 1966 and 2006, Switzerland have qualified for the last five World Cups, reaching the last 16 in four of those tournaments.
The contract runs until June 30 next year. It is worth around five million Swiss francs ($5.4 million) per year, according to Blick newspaper.
The Credit Suisse logo will stay on the national teams' training jackets and jerseys for as long as the bank exists, SFA spokesman Adrian Arnold said ahead of Saturday's Euro 2024 qualifier against Belarus.
"We had good discussions with our contacts at Credit Suisse, who assured us that the existing contracts would be honoured," Arnold said.
"We would like the partnership to continue thereafer, in whatever form."
Credit Suisse is also the main sponsor of Switzerland's bid to host the 2025 women's European Championships, and the takeover comes shortly before the hosting decision is due on April 4.
The bank is the title sponsor of the Super League, Switzerland's 10-team top football division, including well-known clubs like Young Boys, Grasshopper, FC Zurich and FC Basel.
Blick said the contract runs until 2025 and is worth around eight million Swiss francs ($8.7 million) per season.
Money goes into every club as well as the tournament, with the bank's name appearing on all team strips and on advertising boards around the stadiums.
In 2019, the bank won the naming rights for a proposed new football stadium in Zurich, where Grasshopper and FC Zurich are expected to play.
But the planned "Credit Suisse Arena" has faced delays. It was due to open in mid-2022, but little progress has been made and its future now seems even more uncertain.
Roger Federer Federer is by far the biggest name associated with Credit Suisse.
Although Switzerland's greatest sports star retired in September, he remains a brand ambassador for Credit Suisse. The bank was on board for his transition into a post-tennis career, saying: "We look forward to many more years together".
Federer has a host of other sponsors he can fall back on, including Rolex, Lindt, Mercedes-Benz and Moet et Chandon.
Credit Suisse also sponsors the Federer-instigated Laver Cup, which features six top men's tennis players from Europe against six from the rest of the world, captained by Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe.
The Laver Cup did not respond when contacted by AFP.
 Sponsors leave, others arrive In golf, Credit Suisse sponsored the European Masters golf tournament in Crans-Montana and Spanish former world number two Garcia, who won the 2017 Masters.
European Masters tournament director Yves Mittaz said the contract runs until the 2024 tournament so the event is not at risk.
"There is no reason to panic," he told the Tribune de Geneve newspaper.
"That's the business of sport: sponsors leave, others arrive."
In equestrianism, Credit Suisse is a main sponsor of the Concours Hippique International de Geneve and White Turf in St. Moritz, a glitzy exclusive event featuring horse racing on a frozen lake.

India on Sunday summoned the Swiss ambassador and lodged a protest over the issue of putting up "unfounded and malicious anti-India" posters in front of the UN building in Geneva, according to news reports.

Several posters alleging harassment of minorities and women were put up at a square outside the UN building in Geneva coinciding with a session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

India on Sunday summoned the Swiss ambassador and lodged a protest over the issue of putting up "unfounded and malicious anti-India" posters in front of the UN building in Geneva, official sources said.
Swiss ambassador to New Delhi Ralf Heckner conveyed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) that he would convey India's concerns to Berne with all the seriousness it deserves, they said.
Several posters alleging harassment of minorities and women were put up at a square outside the UN building in Geneva coinciding with a session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
"The embassy has conveyed India's concerns to Berne with all the seriousness it deserves," Heckner said in a brief statement.
A purported video of the posters in front of the UN building was also circulating on social media.
"The secretary (West), MEA, today called in the Swiss ambassador and raised the issue of unfounded and malicious anti-India posters in front of the UN building in Geneva," said a source.
"The Swiss Ambassador said that he would convey India's concerns to Berne with all the seriousness it deserves," it said.
The envoy said the posters in Geneva are part of the space provided to all, but in no way endorse the claims, nor reflect the position of the Swiss government, the sources added. &nbsp;It is learnt that similar posters were put up in the past as well during sessions of the UNHRC.

The Brazilians are into the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 as they managed to get a late winner to beat Group G opponents Switzerland 1-0 on the night at Stadium 974 in Qatar, on Monday.
Manchester United's Casemiro scored the winner in the 83rd minute to give the Selecao their win in as many games and book their spot in the last 16 of the tournament.&nbsp;
Brazil who were missing their star player Neymar due to injury went close to scoring in the first half through Vinicius Jr but the winger had his goal ruled out for offside after a VAR check.
The Swiss side weren't able to convert their chances into something fruitful and were not able to register a single shot on target in the whole game.
Switzerland will now have to win their next game against South Korea in order to confirm their place in the knockout stages.

Cameroon had the better share of chances in the first half but couldn't make them count as the Swiss side also failed to trouble Cameroon's goalkeeper, with the first half ending goalless.
Switzerland started the second half on the front foot and opened the scoring in the 48th minute after Xherdan Shaqiri's pass found an unmarked Breel Embolo in the middle of the six-yard box who smashed the ball in the back of the net.
Cameroon have now lost their last 8 games at the World Cup. Only Mexico (9) have ever lost more games in a row in the competition's history.

The 1-hour rail journey took the rail enthusiasts through 22 tunnels some of which spiral through mountains, and across 48 bridges.

A Swiss railway company claimed the record for the world's longest passenger train Saturday with a trip on one of the most spectacular tracks through the Alps.
The Rhaetian Railway company ran the 1.9-kilometer-long (1.2-mile-long) train composed of 100 coaches along the Albula/Bernina route from Preda to Berguen.
The route was designated a UNESCO World Heritage in 2008 and leads through 22 tunnels, some of which spiral through mountains, and across 48 bridges, including the curved Landwasser Viaduct.
The entire journey took over an hour. Rail enthusiasts lined the valley to watch the train's 25 sections wind their way about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) through the Alps.
Rhaetian Railway director Renato Fasciati said the record attempt was intended to highlight some of Switzerland's engineering achievements and to celebrate 175 years of Swiss railways.

Swiss star tennis player Roger Federer said on Saturday that things are moving slowly in his attempt to recover from knee surgery. 
The 40-year-old player has played just five tournaments since February 2020 after suffering a knee injury. Federer last played at the Wimbledon quarters almost a year ago before he underwent a third surgery on his knee.
