The 2025 Ashes series kicks off in Perth with England chasing a historic first win Down Under since 2010-11, while Australia manages injuries to key pacers and debuts two Indigenous players.

The build-up to the Ashes series starting Friday began at the end of July 2023 following one of the more acrimonious test cricket series between England and Australia.&nbsp;
Ben Stokes and his England lineup won that test at The Oval in South London but it wasn't enough to reclaim the Ashes from the Aussies, who won the first two tests and drew the fourth in a five-match series to retain the old urn.
Cue to Perth Stadium, Day 1 of a possible 25 spanning seven weeks and five cities. There are some big questions in play.
Can an aging, understrength Australia continue an unbeaten run in home Ashes tests that dates to the 2010-11 series? Can Stokes inspire an end to that long drought for England? Can Joe Root, the world's No. 1-ranked test batter, finally post an Ashes century in Australia?
The English
Stokes knows the record: 13 losses, two draws and no wins in England's last 15 tests Down Under. He's thinking more about the 2010-11 squad that beat the Australians 3-1.
&ldquo;I've come here absolutely desperate to get home on that plane in January as one of the lucky few captains from England who have come here and been successful,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;A lot has been spoken of about the history and how it has gone for England &mdash; this is our chance to create our own.&rdquo;
In a bid to break the drought, England is likely to start a pair of express pace bowlers in conditions expected to suit them. Jofra Archer is primed to do well in Australia and 35-year-old Mark Wood recovered from a minor hamstring strain to be including in the 12-man match squad for the first test.
&ldquo;He's flying,&rdquo; Stokes said of Wood, who took 17 wickets in the last Ashes series in Australia. &ldquo;He's had all his injury troubles and all that kind of stuff ... but he's been bowling for a long, long time. &ldquo;He has always been someone who can just hit the ground running in a game. And he's bowling rapid, which is good.&rdquo;
The Aussies
Australia captain Pat Cummins and fellow paceman Josh Hazlewood will be missing the first test because of injuries, leaving Australia's attack without half of its frontline bowlers. The remaining half &mdash; left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc and offspinner Nathan Lyon &mdash; are confident that the team can win on what is expected to be a fast, bouncy pitch in Perth.
Brendan Doggett is set to make his test debut alongside fellow fast bowler Scott Boland, making it the first time the men's test XI will contain two players with Australian Indigenous heritage. &ldquo;Good to see the depth in the squad,&rdquo; Starc said. &ldquo;We know what Scotty Boland can do, ... (and) Doggie's' coming off a hot streak at the moment.&rdquo;
Cameron Green's fitness to bowl means he'll fill the allrounder spot and Australia can give opening batter Jake Weatherald a test debut at the age of 31. The flow-on means Marnus Labuschagne will return at No. 3, with stand-in skipper Steve Smith at No. 4 and allrounder Beau Webster has been cut from the lineup.
&ldquo;Beau came into international cricket and lit it up immediately, so I think it's a really tough one on him," Smith said. "He's the one that misses out unfortunately. &ldquo;But I think with Marnus, when he's batting at his best at No. 3, it makes us a very, very good cricket side."
Smith's role
The 36-year-old Smith will lead Australia for the third time this year and the seventh time since his era as full-time captain ended with the Sandpapergate scandal in 2018. He filled in as skipper the last time England toured Australia in 2021-22, after Cummins was forced to isolate for the Adelaide test during the COVID-19 pandemic.
&ldquo;He's a lot more relaxed as a person all round," Starc said of his longtime teammate. "Even the times that he's captained since, when he's had to fill in for Pat, it's a different approach. &ldquo;He's still that competitive beast, and still wants to be the best, and still will leave no stone unturned. But I think he's finding a few outlets to actually switch off from time to time ... and just not be cricket 100% of the time.&rdquo;

Australia skipper Steve Smith said Thursday it was "really exciting" to see Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett make their debuts in the opening Ashes Test against England, backing them to perform on the biggest stage.
The pair, both 31, will earn their baggy green caps at a sold-out Perth Stadium on Friday -- the first time Australia have chosen multiple debutants in a Test since early 2019.
Weatherald's inclusion as Usman Khawaja's sixth opening partner since David Warner retired last year means in-form Marnus Labuschagne can return to his favoured number three.
Labuschagne was dropped ahead of Australia's mid-year Test tour of the West Indies after an extended lean spell but came roaring back with five centuries in eight innings this season for Queensland.
Incumbent number three Cameron Green edged out Beau Webster as the all-rounder and will now come in at six, behind Smith at four and Travis Head at five.
"I watched him bat in the nets pretty closely the last few days and they were pretty tricky nets, fast, bouncy and a lot of seam," Smith, standing in as captain for the injured Pat Cummins, said of Weatherald.
"And you know, he's got a lot of courage. He wants to face bowlers the entire time, and the guys were charging in fast.
"I'm really excited for him. He's worked hard for a long period of time and I think he's going to complement Uzzie (Khawaja) pretty well up top."
 - 'Improved a hell of a lot' -
Doggett, an outstanding bowler in domestic cricket over recent years, will pull on an Australia shirt for the first time after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out with a hamstring strain.
Cummins is also missing as he returns to fitness from a back injury, replaced by Scott Boland.
Boland and Doggett lead the pace attack alongside Mitchell Starc, with Smith confident they will rise to the occasion.
"Injuries happen in sport, particularly in cricket with fast bowlers, they put a lot of stress through their bodies," said Smith.
"So unfortunate, obviously, that those two are out, but I think an exciting opportunity for Scotty and for Brendan Doggett.
"Brendan's been on a few tours with Australia. He is very skillful. I think he's improved a hell of a lot the last few years and I'm excited to see him go about his business."
Nathan Lyon, in his 140th Test, provides the spin option with the veteran generally thriving on home soil, where he has bagged 268 of his 562 Test wickets at an average of 31.08.
He needs two more to surpass Glenn McGrath and become the sixth-highest wicket-taker in history.
"It looks a good wicket, pretty similar to last year's one," said Smith. "I think it's going to have some decent pace and bounce in it."
England drew 2-2 at home in the most recent Ashes series, in 2023, but have not won in Australia since 2010/2011.
The visitors have named a squad of 12 for the first Test and will confirm their team at the toss.

Charismatic Australian batter Steve Smith's quick recovery from a "compound dislocation" in the little finger of his right hand, and his sooner-than-expected return to the squad for the second Test against West Indies has a baseball twist to it.
Smith has suffered an injury to his right little finger while trying to take a difficult catch off South African captain Temba Bavuma at first slip during the World Test Championship final at Lord's earlier this month.
The 36-year-old former Australian skipper immediately left London after his wound was cleaned, stitched and his finger placed in a splint. Instead of waiting for the injury to heal by itself, he decided to hit the "baseball cage" in New York, where he owns an apartment.
The injury forced him to miss the opening game of the three-Test series against the Caribbean in Barbados from June 25 to 27, which Australia won by 159 runs.
In New York, he began by facing tennis balls and other soft balls in the nets before facing the hard cricket ball.
"My mate actually told me about it, which was ideal because it was pretty warm there (in New York)," Smith was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.
"Underneath this bridge there was a batting cage, and he was able to throw me a few balls there, so it was good to be in the shade, it was pretty hot there," he said.
A baseball cage is a netted enclosure, quite similar to the cricket nets, used by baseball players to practice hitting. It provides a contained area where batters can safely swing and hit baseballs, without the risk of stray balls leaving the hitting area.
Smith sent the footage of his batting to the Australian medical staff in the Caribbean, who were happy with his progress.
The report added that Smith had his stitches removed on Sunday and his finger now only has a thinner splint as he gears up for his return for the second Test at St George's from July 3.
"For me, it'll just feel like training as normal, I think. I don't really feel any pain or anything. (I'm) just getting used to the splint on and the slight limited movement.
"It's not too bad, I've got a lot of movement there now, so that feels good. Hitting the ball felt completely fine," said Smith "Fielding some balls in front of the wicket will probably be the strangest thing for me, I don't think I've ever done that in a Test match. Fielding at either probably mid-on or mid-off or fine leg, is a bit different to standing at the second or first slip,&rdquo; he added.
Smith, meanwhile, backed the new players in the Australian side, including opener Sam Konstas, to come good in the second Test.
"These guys are good players, there's been a lot of talk around it but... we just need to give them an opportunity," said Smith.
"It doesn't always come around straight away. We've just got to give them an opportunity and let them get used to playing in these conditions and in international cricket. These guys have some really good talent and I think they have bright futures,&rdquo; he added.

During the lunch break, Smith spoke up about the incident, defending his actions. He remained firm in his belief that he had successfully caught the ball, claiming that his hands were beneath it and that it was a legitimate catch.

Virat Kohli is "under a lot of pressure" in the ongoing IPL owing to the collective failure of Royal Challengers Bengaluru batters, feels former Australia captain Steve Smith who wants the Indian superstar's RCB teammates to come good in the supporting act.
Kohli has waged a lone battle for RCB this IPL season with 203 runs in four matches at 67.66 with two fifties. The second-best batter, Dinesh Karthik, is way behind with 90 runs in as many games.
Despite Kohli's consistency, RCB have faltered with three losses in four matches throwing them as far back as the seventh spot in the points table. The likes of Glenn Maxwell, skipper Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green have been underwhelming so far with the bat.
"He needs the other key batters to stand up with him, and if they do that, they can turn things around for their season. But, at the moment, they're not so a lot of pressure is on Virat," Smith, a member of the Star Sports Incredible Star Cast, told PTI in an exclusive interaction at the channel's studio in Mumbai.
"I doubt he'd be putting extra pressure on himself. (But) some of the other top-order and middle-order (batters) need to help Virat," he said.
Smith warned that Kohli is not going to score runs in every match and RCB batters must get their act together.
"He started the campaign really well in the IPL and he needs some support. He's not going to score runs on every occasion," he said.
"But, I doubt he'd be thinking that way. I don't think he'd go out and put extra pressure on himself. He'd just go out and play and see what happens in that game." Smith rubbished the criticism which Kohli has faced time and again in his career over his batting strike-rate saying that no player in the world can read situations as well as the Indian batter. Kohli has been hitting at over 140 in this year's IPL.
"Virat is an incredible player. What he does really well, and probably better than most people in the world, is (that) he sums up the conditions and the situation of the game and plays accordingly," he said.
"If he needs to strike big, he does. If he needs to bring it back a little bit and build some partnerships...You don't need 180 on every ground; 150-160 might be enough on some grounds," he added.
"Virat sums up the conditions really well and the situation. I'm not fussed about the strike rate," Smith continued.
Smith also touched upon another controversy-mired sub-plot in the IPL -- Hardik Pandya's captaincy of Mumbai Indians and the fan backlash he is facing. He understands why Pandya has been subjected to jeering in all three matches so far, but also wants fans to stop holding on to the past.
"Yes and no. Obviously, there was that (booing) going on in the first two games. It sort of becomes a bit of a thing, if that makes sense. But, it was unfortunate, I think. I'd love to see them supporting Hardik. Obviously, there's a lot of huge Rohit fans out there," he said.
"A lot of people are a bit annoyed that he's not the captain of the side. But, everyone needs to let go of that and support Hardik. He's a wonderful player. He had a lot of success at Gujarat (Titans). He's back (as) captain of the side at Mumbai now.
"The senior players need to help him out," Smith said.
Being a subject of severe international scrutiny as Australia captain back in 2018 following the ball-tampering incident in Cape Town which led to him being banned for one year, Smith shared some insights on what it takes to come out.
"While all this negativity is out there, he has got to find ways to cope with it and mechanisms to deal with it," Smith said.
"Everyone is different (in) the way they do that. For me, personally, I just block everything out. I don't listen to anything; I don't listen to any comments, or boos, or anything like that.
"It's difficult to say, but you kind of just have to let it be. Block it out as much as you can, and just get on with the job at hand. I think the best way for him to turn people around is if Mumbai start winning, that's the key thing," Smith said.
Smith, however, rejected suggestions that the off-field drama has been a factor in MI's three successive losses.
"One thing about the Mumbai Indians is (that) they're notoriously bad starters in the tournament. They've done it on numerous occasions," he said.
"I don't think they'd be too worried just yet. But, they will have to turn things around really quickly. It doesn't look good, 0-3 at the bottom of the table. They have to turn things around really quickly," he added.

The former Australia captain, who is playing the opening Test against New Zealand, added a bowler should be allowed just one or two such deliveries, after which he should be warned or the delivery be called a wide.
"I think there could be some slight rule changes in terms of balls going down the leg side when you set that field.
"You really can't hit the ball anywhere in front of the wicket really, and I feel like it is almost like when a (left-arm) spinner comes over the wicket and they get the warning down the leg side and then they start getting 'wided'," Smith was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.
"If you're bowling balls consistently in that area down leg, it should be a similar ruling to the spinner if that makes sense. Basically bowl one or two, then get a warning and then get wides called," he added.
Smith, who made a 31 in Australia's first innings on the opening day of the Test here as Australia ended day one at 279/9, added that if the ball is drifting too much down leg, it's impossible for a batter to play any kind of stroke.
"To have those catchers (fielders) there in position, it can be challenging for sure. The only thing I'd like to see is if you get too much down leg, you can't really score anywhere else, and all the fielders are there. That would be the only change I wouldn't mind seeing," added Smith.
Smith has found himself getting bogged down by pace bowlers over the years as they use the tactic to stop the flow of runs, or force him to play a hook shot in frustration to one of the fielders.
Smith praised New Zealand pace bowler Neil Wagner, who announced his retirement from Test cricket on Tuesday, for his accuracy.
"Ultimately it is a good skill what Neil's been able to do, the way he can get the ball between throat and chest height consistently, not bowl his two (bouncers) for the over and just carry on doing it," Smith said.
"It's a good skill and it can be challenging, particularly for guys that are pullers of the ball."

Premier Australian batter Steve Smith has revealed that he was nursing an injury for the better part of the Ashes series, having wounded his wrist during the Lord's Test.
The 34-year-old had torn a tendon in his left wrist during the second Test at Lord's after making a match-winning 110 in the first innings.
"I did it at Lord's. I don't actually know the moment, it was when we were in the field. It wasn't until that night I was like, 'Geez, what have I done here, it's a bit sore'," Smith told Fox Cricket.
"I played the next game and then I had a cortisone before Old Trafford. I got back (to Australia) and I was like, 'Still not quite right. I still can't do a lot of things properly'."
"I had another scan. There was a small tear in the tendon as well as a couple of other things," he added.
After winning the opening two Tests, Australia looked on course to register their first Ashes series win in England since 2001. However, the hosts staged a remarkable comeback to draw the rubber.

Australia captain Pat Cummins is recovering from a wrist fracture suffered during the Ashes in England, while Smith is nursing a tendon injury on his left wrist, which has sidelined him for four weeks, according to Cricket Australia.
Both will miss the three T20Is in South Africa from August 30 to September 3, which will be followed by five ODIs from September 7-17.
The pair will return for the three-match ODI series against India beginning September 22 along with left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Starc, who is also not in the squad for the South Africa series.
Starc, who played a crucial role in Australia's 2-1 ODI series victory against India in March, suffered "groin soreness" upon his return from the Ashes, where he also suffered a shoulder injury.
Australia have included tall left-arm quick Spencer Johnson, who is a member of the T20I side, to their ODI squad for South Africa as well.
"The compacted Ashes series and the World Test Championship was a heavy load for the group, and we are taking a conservative approach in the build-up to the World Cup," said Australia's chairman of the national selection panel, George Bailey on Friday.
"With the World Cup (from October 5) the priority of the squad, it was determined on advice that it was best for Steve (Smith) and Mitchell (Marsh) to join the group in India by which time we expect them to be fully fit and available for the Indian ODI series, plus the World Cup warm-up fixture,&rdquo; Bailey added.
In Cummins' absence, Mitchell Marsh, who was earlier named Australia's T20I captain for the series against South Africa, will also lead the side in the five-match ODI series.
The three ODIs against India will be played on September 22, 24 and 27 at Mohali, Indore and Rajkot respectively. They will serve as the Kangaroos' preparation for the World Cup beginning October 5.
