German chancellor Friedrich Merz never got to see Germany play at the Women's European Championship.
"If it goes well we'll see each other Sunday evening in Basel for the final,&rdquo; Merz posted on social media before the German team faced World Cup champion Spain in the semifinal match on Wednesday.
It didn't go quite that well. Aitana Bonmat&iacute; scored late in extra time for Spain to win 1-0 and avoid a penalty shootout that the Germany team had been holding out for.
Germany's Euro 2025 campaign had been full of promise, but not matched in substance.
Merz was filmed watching Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger's amazing save in the quarterfinal win over France as if he'd never seen it before. He he was never so excited during a soccer game than he'd been watching Germany win on penalties the previous weekend.
A commitment to meet France's president, Emmanuel Macron, meant Merz couldn't attend the semifinals in Zurich.
Anyone watching Germany during the tournament was left wondering what the team is really capable of.
A highlight reel would feature a string of fine saves from Berger, committed defending from Franziska Kett, Giovanna Hoffmann and Jule Brand &ndash; who are all forwards &ndash; and only occasional flashes of brilliance in attack, such as Brand's opening strike in the team's first game against Poland.
Germany, the eight-time European champion, only nearly reached the final through sheer dogged determination.
Captain Giulia Gwinn was injured against Poland and ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. A 2-1 come-from-behind win over Denmark ensured early progress from the group, before a chastening 4-1 loss to Sweden in the last group game.
Germany had defender Gwinn's replacement, Carlotta Wamser, sent off early against Sweden for swatting the ball away from goal with her hand, then Kathrin Hendrich sent off early in the quarterfinal match against France for pulling French captain Griedge Mbock back by her hair.
It meant Germany reverted to defensive tactics in both games, protecting Berger's goal while hoping the likes of Brand and star forward Klara B&uuml;hl might score on counterattacks.
B&uuml;hl's corner allowed Sjoeke N&uuml;sken to score the equalizer against France and the team held on despite French dominance to win 6-5 on penalties after Berger's heroics.
The Germany goalkeeper was feted afterward for her amazing save to stop stand-in captain Janina Minge's backward header from going into her own net when she leaped backwards and somehow clawed the ball away from the line. Berger also saved two penalties and scored her own spot kick in the shootout.
The win filled the German players and supporters with confidence ahead of the game against Spain, despite the overall performance against France.
&ldquo;We dominated them from start to finish. Now they're through. I'm sorry, but they don't deserve it,&rdquo; France winger Selma Bacha said.
Germany was short on defenders against Spain with Sarai Linder joining Gwinn on the injury list and Hendrichs and N&uuml;sken both suspended. But it didn't stop the team defending, with forwards helping out at the back, producing timely blocks and committed challenges to frustrate Spain's star forwards. Berger again made a host of saves until she left space at her near post and Bonmat&iacute; squeezed the ball through.
It ended Germany's hopes of a rematch with defending champion England in the final, and left Merz with an opening in his schedule.&nbsp;

On a dramatic night, Portugal battled past Denmark in extra time and will next face Finals hosts Germany after their tense 5-4 aggregate victory over Italy. European champions Spain took the lead in the tie, after Thursday's 2-2 first-leg draw, when Mikel Oyarzabal picked himself up after being fouled in the box to slot home an early penalty.
The Netherlands equalised nine minutes into the second half as Memphis Depay also won and then netted a spot-kick.
Oyarzabal grabbed his second in the 67th minute after a strong run forward by Nico Williams, only for the Dutch to level again with 11 minutes remaining through Ian Maatsen's fierce strike.
Lamine Yamal struck shortly before the interval in extra time, though, curling the ball into the far corner after a couple of superb touches.
There was yet another twist as Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon brought down Xavi Simons, who picked himself up to score.
Spain edged home 5-4 in the shoot-out despite a miss from Yamal, as Simon saved from Netherlands winger Donyell Malen and Pedri struck the winning penalty.
"We're Spain and we don't have to fear anyone," Pedri told TVE of facing 2021 Nations League winners France in the semi-finals in Stuttgart on June 5.
France wiped out a two-goal deficit against Croatia at the Stade de France.
Michael Olise's brilliant free-kick broke the deadlock on the night in the 52nd minute, before Ousmane Dembele swept Olise's cutback into the bottom corner to send the quarter-final to extra time.
Theo Hernandez missed a penalty to win it for France in an eventful shoot-out, but Dayot Upamecano eventually secured a 5-4 success on penalties in sudden death.
"We woke up thinking it could be a great night," Kylian Mbappe told TF1. "We were convinced we were going to do something great."
Trincao fires Portugal through
Portugal, inspired by substitute Francisco Trincao, battled back after losing the first game 1-0 to win a thrilling last-eight encounter with Denmark 5-3 on aggregate.
Cristiano Ronaldo, after a stuttering run-up, produced the tamest of early penalties which was comfortably held by Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Portugal were gifted the lead on the night when Joachim Andersen put through his own net.
But the Danes restored their aggregate advantage 11 minutes into the second half through Rasmus Kristensen's excellent header.
Ronaldo did get his 136th international goal, though, turning the ball in after Schmeichel tipped Fernandes' shot against the post.
But Portugal were caught out in the 76th minute when Christian Eriksen tapped home.
The hosts managed to force an added half-hour when Schmeichel's weak punch fell to Mendes, who teed up Trincao to drill a shot into the bottom corner.
Trincao netted his second in the first minute of extra time and Goncalo Ramos secured a meeting with Germany in Munich on June 4.

Tim Kleindienst nodded in Kimmich's clipped cross on the stroke of half-time, but Moise Kean scored twice to give Italy a glimmer of hope heading into the last 20 minutes.
Giacomo Raspadori converted a penalty in injury time to equalise on the night, but there was not long enough left for the Azzurri.
"A football game is never perfect, but it was some unbelievable football, and the best I've seen us play," Germany coach Nagelsmann said.
Elsewhere, Belgium narrowly avoided relegation to League B as two late goals from Romelu Lukaku helped them overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit against Ukraine with a 3-0 victory.

The amendment to Article 49 also added that &ldquo;public administrations will pursue policies that guarantee the complete autonomy and social inclusion of people with disabilities.&rdquo; Spain's ruling Socialist Party and the conservative opposition Popular Party agreed to make the change in a rare moment of consensus between the European nation's largest political parties.
The amendment was also backed by all the other, smaller parties represented in the chamber, except for the far-right Vox party. It passed by a vote of 312 to 32. It required the support of three-fifths of the Parliament's lower chamber and must also be passed by the Senate, with the same margin.
&ldquo;Today is a great day for our democracy,&rdquo; said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S&aacute;nchez, who asked for forgiveness in name of the country for having taken so long to make the change.
&ldquo;We are paying off a moral debt that we have had with over four million of our fellow citizens," he said.

Luis Rubiales defiantly told an emergency general assembly of the federation &ldquo;I won't resign&rdquo; four times in quick succession and claimed he was a victim of a witch hunt by &ldquo;false feminists.&rdquo; Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the award ceremony after Spain beat England in the final in Sydney, Australia, marring the title celebrations in front of a global audience.
Several Spanish media outlets reported on Thursday that Rubiales was planning to step down.
Instead, he said the kiss was &ldquo;mutual and with the consent&rdquo; of Hermoso and painted himself as a victim. He received various applause from the overwhelming male assembly.

He said that he would defend his honour in court against politicians, including two ministers, who called his kiss an act of sexual violence.
The 46-year-old Rubiales is under immense pressure to leave his post because of his conduct before and during the award ceremony following Spain's 1-0 victory over England on Sunday.
Since Rubiales became a national embarrassment, criticism and calls for him to go have mounted day after day, with Spain's acting prime minister, his government, players' unions, and finally voices from inside men's soccer saying he must go.
The only relevant institution to remain silent has been the European soccer body, the Union of European Football Associations, for which Rubiales is a vice president. Until Friday's assembly, he had received no public support in Spain.
International Federation of Association Football, the governing body of soccer, opened a disciplinary case against Rubiales on Thursday.
The FIFA disciplinary committee was tasked with weighing whether Rubiales violated its code relating to &ldquo;the basic rules of decent conduct&rdquo; and &ldquo;behaving in a way that brings the sport of football and/or FIFA into disrepute.&rdquo; That move by FIFA came after Spain's acting prime minister, Pedro S&aacute;nchez, said Rubiales' attempt to apologize, which came after he initially insulted his critics, was unconvincing and that &ldquo;he must continue taking further steps&rdquo; to be held accountable.
Spain's Higher Council of Sports, the nation's governing sports body, pledged it would act quickly to consider various formal complaints filed against Rubiales to see if he had broken Spain's sports law or the federation's own code of conduct that sanction sexist acts. If so, Rubiales would face being declared unfit to hold his office by Spain's Administrative Court for Sports.

Experts were on Monday exhuming the remains of the founder of Spain's fascist Falange party from a grandiose basilica, where the body of former dictator Francisco Franco once lay, ahead of their removal to a low-key family grave.
The operation comes six months after Spain passed the so-called democratic memory law which is designed to tackle the legacy of the 1936-39 civil war and the decades of dictatorship that followed.
Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera founded the Falange party in 1933, which became one of the pillars of Francisco Franco's brutal regime, along with the military and Spain's Roman Catholic Church.
Executed in November 1936 at the start of the war for conspiring against the elected Republican government, Primo de Rivera was in 1959 buried inside the basilica in the Valley of the Fallen, 50 kilometres (30 miles) northwest of Madrid.
Under the new law, no figure linked to the 1936 military coup that triggered the civil war should be buried in "a prominent public place" that could encourage acts of homage or exultation.
Accordingly, the family agreed to have his remains be transferred to San Isidro, selecting April 24 as the date because it marks exactly 120 years since his birth.
The basilica where Primo de Rivera's remains lay for over six decades, is part of a vast hillside mausoleum built after the civil war by Franco's regime -- in part by the forced labour of 20,000 political prisoners.
When the dictator died in 1975, he was also buried there, in a tomb by the altar, close to Primo de Rivera's grave, with the site long being a draw for those nostalgic for the Franco era.
Cabinet minister Felix Bolanos said the operation "was another step" in the government's efforts to strip the mausoleum of its status as a symbol of Francoism and far-right ideology.
"It should not be possible to pay tribute to any person evoking the dictatorship," he said after the government announced the exhumation on Thursday.
Honouring those who died or suffered violence or repression during the civil war and dictatorship has been a top priority for the left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who came to power in 2018.
In 2019, his government relocated Franco's remains from the basilica following a lengthy legal battle with the dictator's family.

PSG defender Sergio Ramos announced his retirement from international football after trophy-laden career with Spain that saw him earn 180 caps.
Ramos lifted the World Cup 2010 and two European championships with his country.
The 36-year-old former Real Madrid captain released a statement explaining his decision on Thursday.
"The time has come," Ramos wrote in his statement. "Time for me to say goodbye to the Spain national team.
"This morning, I received a call from the coach who informed me that I am not and will not be part of his plans, regardless of how I perform or what I do in my career.
"With a heavy heart, it's the end of a road that I hoped would stretch out further and would end with a better taste in my mouth, on a par with all the success we achieved with La Roja.
"I honestly believed that this journey deserved to end at my own choosing or because of my performances were not at a level worthy of our national team. Not due to a question of age or other reasons that, although I have not heard them directly, I have certainly felt.
"Age in itself is not a virtue or a defect; it's just a number not necessarily related to performance or ability. I admire and envy players like (Luka) Modric, (Lionel) Messi and Pepe.
"Unfortunately, it won't be like that for me because football isn't always fair and football is never just football. This is something I have to accept, albeit with this sadness but also with my head held high."

India's chief coach Graham Reid said his players ticked most of the boxes in the 2-0 win over a tricky Spain in their opening Hockey World Cup encounter.
Reid also praised the home team's defensive efforts to deny their opponents any chances, stating he was pleased with how his players managed to keep Spain out on the night.
"The boys were able to take the ball out of the goal. It was a good start. It is good to get the first game and it is done now and we will now focus on the next game," Reid said at the post-match press conference.
"We did practice of playing with 10 men as we thought at some point in the tournament we are going to play with 10 men. It was good. We got in front a lot today and that was very important. We were first with the ball and that makes a lot of difference in these sort of games."
"What is pleasing today is one the defensive effort and the second we handle the ball very well. There were not too many people who did not play well. That is what you need to win a World Cup. We need to continue it in the next game," he added.
India will play England in their second Pool D match at the Birsa Munda Stadium on Sunday.

With India facing a less experienced Spanish side in their Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 opener on Friday, Indian coach Graham Reid feels the team needs to be ready for their opponents as experience is often overrated at tournaments such as the World Cups.
Most of the Spanish players have played less than 100 international matches while India has a mix of experienced players who have played more than 100 matches alongside the young guns.
"Experience is a little bit overrated sometimes in big tournaments like this and we have to play our best, that is the key." Graham Reid said during an interview.
"Beware of Spain as they can perform much higher than what they think they can. There is nothing to lose (for them) and (you should) watch out for them. That is the reality," he further added.
India open their campaign against Spain at the brand new Birsa Munda Stadium on Friday in Pool A.
