More than a dozen judges in Pakistan have received threatening letters, with some of them laced with toxic powder.
Dawn newspaper reported that 10 judges of high courts received suspicious letters on Friday, days after eight judges received letters, criticising the justice system of Pakistan.
Some of these letters were also addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
According to reports, letters had a suspicious white powder, which is believed to be toxic, and were sent to at least 17 top judges.
&ldquo;Welcome to Bacillus anthracis!!!&rdquo; were the words written in the letters, which also contained a photo of a human skull.
Bacillus anthracis is a bacterium that causes anthrax, a rare but serious infectious disease that affects people and animals.
Police said a lesser-known group called Tehreek-e-Namoos Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the suspicious letters.
Police officials in Islamabad and Lahore said the letters and their contents have been sent to forensic and security experts for investigation. The authorities have not yet confirmed what the white powder was.
The police have filed an FIR under terrorism charges and Section 507 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication or having taken precautions to conceal whence the threat.
On Friday, the office of the Director General Pakistan Post passed instructions to its staff on handling mail addressed to high-profile personalities, reported Dawn.
The office directed all postmasters general to circulate an alert to all offices countrywide to take due care and be vigilant while handling mail addressed to high-profile offices in the wake of the suspected letters being delivered to the higher judiciary.

Shortly after being elected as Pakistan's prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif raised the Kashmir issue in his maiden address at the parliament on Sunday.
Equating the Kashmir issue with Palestine, the 72-year-old PM-designate urged the National Assembly to pass a resolution for what he called the freedom of Kashmiris and Palestinians.
"Let&rsquo;s all come together [&hellip;] and the National Assembly should pass a resolution for the freedom of Kashmiris and Palestinians,&rdquo; he said, according to Dawn newspaper.
He also addressed the economic crisis plaguing Pakistan and expressed his desire for Pakistan to secure membership of G20 by 2030. Moreover, he also pledged to improve ties with all countries, including neighbours.&nbsp;
"We will keep ties with neighbours on the basis of equality,&rdquo; Shehbaz said.
Talking about the economic crisis, Shehbaz said that even the expenditures of the National Assembly were being paid by borrowed money.&nbsp;
&ldquo;But if we decide to do a deep surgery and bring changes in the system, basic reform&hellip;I have no doubt&hellip;we can either get rid of a life of debt or we move forward with heads down in shame,&rdquo; said the PM-designate.&nbsp;
&ldquo;No this will not happen, we will rise and we will make Pakistan self-sufficient,&rdquo; he said amid slogans and chants being raised by the PTI-backed lawmakers.
On the government&rsquo;s plan to stimulate business activities, he said that the government would abolish draconian and obsolete laws and regulations and would work with the provincial governments to establish a comprehensive network of export zones.
He said the country was facing challenges primarily due to the fragile economy. He said that he was starting his tenure when the country was facing a budgetary deficit of more than one trillion rupees.
&ldquo;How we will pay the salaries for armed forces and how to pay the civil servants,&rdquo; he wondered and added that reforming the economy was the biggest challenge faced by the country.
Shehbaz highlighted the burden of debt paying and said that the country was required to pay billions of rupees in interest only.

According to the schedule, candidates can submit their nomination papers by Saturday, 2 pm. The scrutiny of the papers will be completed the same day.
It said that the procedure for the election of the premier was given to the newly elected lawmakers.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated Shehbaz Sharif, 72, for the slot of prime minister while Omer Ayub Khan is the pick of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N has received the support of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to lead a coalition government after the February 8 elections resulted in a hung Parliament.
The agreement means Sharif is on course to become prime minister for a second time. Shehbaz earlier served as prime minister when the cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan's government was ousted in April 2022. The PML-N party president served as prime minister for 16 months till August 2023 when fresh elections were announced.
Both Shehbaz and Bilawal have asserted that they have enough support to form a coalition government.

Under the power-sharing deal, 68-year-old Asif Ali Zardari of the PPP will be the coalition's candidate to become president - an office he previously held from 2008 to 2013.
According to the Constitution, a party must win 133 out of 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly to form a government.
Independent candidates - a majority backed by Khan's PTI - won 93 National Assembly seats. The PML-N won 75 seats while the PPP came third with 54 seats. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has 17 seats.
That left PML-N and PPP to ally along with four smaller parties to keep Khan's PTI out of power.
Meanwhile, elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly will be held on March 1, incumbent Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf has announced. The elections will be held through secret ballot.
PML-N&rsquo;s Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and PTI-backed Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar have submitted their nomination papers for the post of the Speaker. Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah and Junaid Akbar&rsquo;s names have been proposed by the treasury and opposition benches respectively for the post of deputy speaker.&nbsp;

Pakistan's former premier Shehbaz Sharif Wednesday said that his elder brother Nawaz Sharif would become prime minister if his party gets majority in the parliamentary elections but in case of a split mandate, the decision about a new leader would be taken after talks with coalition partners.
Shehbaz, who is also president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), made the comments while talking to the Geo News. He was asked who would be the next prime minister.
"Nawaz Sharif will be the prime minister if we get a simple majority. But in case of a split mandate, the decision will be made after talks with coalition partners," he said.
Shehbaz was also asked if he would prefer to become the prime minister instead of putting the burden of the top job on his brother who may not be able to discharge responsibilities properly due to advanced age and health issues.
"My response to this question is the same that I gave to dictators on different occasions: that Nawaz Sharif is my leader and prime minister,&rdquo; he said.
Shehbaz already revealed in different interviews that the powerful establishment on different occasions offered him to become the prime minister instead of his brother but he always rejected the offer.
The apparent reason for the offer could be that Shehbaz always maintained good ties with the establishment.

Pakistan's economic crisis hit a new low on 25 February 2023 with the government ordering the halting of payment of bills and salaries, according to a news report.
Pakistan's Ministry of Finance and Revenue ordered the Accountant General of Pakistan Revenues (AGPR) to stop clearing bills of federal ministries and departments, according to sources quoted by The News International.
However, salaries and pensions of defence-related institutions were already cleared for March 2023, as per the report.
The Shehbaz Sharif government is currently battling with low foreign exchange reserves, a plummeting currency, electricity outages, and consequent political instability.
Finance Minister Dar while meeting on February 22 with a delegation of Rothschild and Co had said "the government was steering the economy towards stability and growth". He added that "the government is committed to completing the IMF programme and fulfilling all international obligations".
Dar's commitment to unlocking the IMF tranche was visible on February 20 when the national assembly had unanimously approved the Finance (Supplementary) Bill 2023 or "mini-budget" - a move mandatory for seeking funding. The bill increases sales tax from 17 to 25 per cent on imports ranging from cars and household appliances to chocolates and cosmetics. A general sales tax was raised from 17 to 18 per cent.
"The prime minister will also unveil austerity measures in the next few days," the minister told the lower house of parliament as the bill was passed, adding "we will have to take difficult decisions".

It adds that it is well-known that a deliberate cyber campaign has been launched by certain wings for self-serving motives with the objective of inciting and nurturing hatred against important state institutions and their officials, the report said.
It also states that such attacks are focused on undermining the integrity, stability and independence of the country&rsquo;s state institutions. The United States of America on 9 January 2023 announced additional funding worth $100 million to Pakistan.
The funding is meant to aid recovery and reconstruction efforts after the devastating floods in 2022 which killed 1,739 persons and impacted 3.3 crore people. US State Department spokesperson Ned Price that the additional funding has taken USA's total contribution to more than $200 million.
The new USD 100 million in funding will be for flood protection and governance, disease surveillance, economic growth, and clean energy, climate smart agriculture, food security, and infrastructure reconstruction, Price said.
The United States' flood-related assistance complements its broader efforts to form a US-Pakistan green alliance that looks at the range of climate and resilience issues central to Pakistan's reconstruction, the spokesperson said.

The TTP, which is believed to be close to al-Qaeda, has explicitly warned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari led Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) - the two major parties of the ruling coalition.
"If these two parties remain firm on their position and continue to be slaves of the army, then action will be taken against their leading people," a statement issued by the militant group said.
The group warned that "people should avoid getting close to such leading people." It claimed that the TTP was only waging what it called "jihad" in Pakistan and "our target is the security agencies occupying the country".
It explicitly warned Foreign Minister Bilawal, whose mother former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was killed allegedly by TTP militants in a terrorist attack in 2007.
"Although Bilawal is still young, this poor man has not yet witnessed the state of war," the statement said, adding that the PPP leader had declared an open war on TTP.
The group also said that it had not taken action against any political party for a long time but "unfortunately&hellip;Bilawal Bhutto Zardari gave the US the status of mother to quench the thirst of his mother's love".
The terrorist outfit also said that Prime Minister Sharif had committed the support of his entire party in the war against TTP to please the US.
The TTP spared the religious political parties, saying there is no scope for action against them in TTP's policy. However, it said that "we also request you (religious parties) to refrain from activities against us." The warning comes just days after the civil-military leadership of the country met under the banner of the National Security Committee and vowed to show "zero tolerance" for terrorism in the country.

The wealth of the Bajwa family is in the headlines after a news report in an outlet called FactsFocus. Tax details of Pakistan Army's outgoing chief apparently show that Gen Bajwa's extended family became billionaires after 2016 when he took the top job. The wealth of many of his relatives went from zero to billions within a few short years. Bajwa's family acquired Rs 12.7 billion in various types of assets and businesses. These properties and businesses are based both inside and outside Pakistan.
Here's how the financial status of Bajwa's wife, daughter-in-law, and others changed.
Ayesha Amjad, the wife of General Bajwa, was not filing tax returns when her husband became a Lieutenant General. Her wealth was zero in 2016, but increased to Rs 2.2 billion in 2022 according to her tax information. This amount excludes houses, residential plots, and commercial plots given to Bajwa by the Pakistan Army.
Next is Mahnoor Sabir, who is Bajwa's daughter-in-law. Her wealth was zero in October 2018, but rose Rs 1.2 billion just a month later, when she was getting married. Her tax filings in 2018 said the properties had been acquired between 2014 and 2016, but not declared. Mahnoor also became the manager of an oil company named Taxx Petroleum Pakistan in November 2019.
The tax returns of Sabir 'Mithu' Hameed - Bajwa's friend and the father-in-law of his eldest son - were less than Rs 1 million in 2013. However, in subsequent years, his wealth reportedly rose to billions. Sabir and his brother Nasir are also directors in Taxx Petroleum Pakistan.
Then there is Hamna Naseer, the sister of Bajwa's daughter-in-law. She had zero assets in 2016, but it rose to billions by the next year.
These are just the known and declared amounts. FactsFocus said that it was not able to get details of Bajwa's two sons.
The family's declared assets reportedly include an international business, farmhouses in Islamabad and Karachi, a massive real estate portfolio in Lahore, multiple foreign properties, commercial plazas, and commercial plots.
The Shehbaz Sharif government in Pakistan had an interesting reaction to the revelations. Instead of questioning how Bajwa's family acquired so much wealth, the government targeted the news portal.
The Pakistani government ordered a probe into the leaking of Bajwa family's financial details. The Finance Minister called leakage of the tax information "illegal" and "unwarranted". The Minister said that the incident violated tax information's confidentiality, and ordered an investigation by Special Assistant to Pakistan PM on Revenue.
Meanwhile, the news publication - FactsFocus - has claimed that after releasing the story, traffic on its website was disrupted, and the site was also banned in Pakistan.
The common people of Pakistan have been suffering under austerity measures imposed by the IMF for helping the economy. This has exacerbated the hardships caused by the Covid pandemic, and the recent floods.
In such a situation, if the chief of Pakistan's Army was misusing his position to make his own family richer, and the government fails to investigate this, then it will only reinforce the perception that Pakistan's elected government is just a puppet of the military.

A special Pakistani court on Saturday summoned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz on September 7 for the framing of charges against them in a Rs 16 billion money laundering case.
Shehbaz, 70, and his sons Hamza, 47, and Suleman, 40, were booked by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in November 2020 under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Anti Money Laundering Act.
The case is being heard by a special court in Lahore, which already granted pre-arrest bails to both father and son.
Both Shehbaz and Hamza were absent during the hearing as their lawyers requested for a one-time exemption on their behalf.
Shehbaz’s lawyer Amjad Pervaiz told the court that he had been advised against travelling as he was not well. Hamza’s lawyer Rao Aurangzeb said his client had severe back pain and needed rest.
FIA Prosecutor Farooq Bajwa did not object to the exemption, which was granted by the court.
The prosecutor told the court that they had obtained the record of 19 bank accounts of Suleman Shehbaz, the second son of Prime Minister Shehbaz while the record of another seven was yet to be obtained.
After hearing the arguments, the court adjourned the case until September 7 when it summoned Shehbaz and Hamza for the framing of charges.
Shehbaz and Hamza were previously set to be indicted on May 14 but it was deferred as the prime minister was out of the country.
According to the FIA report submitted to the court, the investigation team has "detected 28 benami accounts of the Shehbaz family through which money laundering of Rs 16.3bn was committed during 2008-18. The FIA examined the money trail of 17,000 credit transactions." Benami transaction refers to any transaction made by a person without using his name or by using the name of another person.
The report added that the amount was kept in "hidden accounts" and "given to Shehbaz in a personal capacity".
"This amount (Rs16 billion) has nothing to do with the sugar business (of Shehbaz family),'' it claimed. The money received from the accounts of low-wage employees by Shehbaz was transferred outside Pakistan via hundi/hawala networks, ultimately destined for the beneficial use of his family members," the FIA had alleged.
"Eleven low-paid employees of the Sharif group who 'held and possessed' the laundered proceeds on behalf of the principal accused, are found guilty of facilitating money laundering. The three other co-accused of the Sharif group also actively facilitated the money laundering," the agency said.

Nawaz Sharif has now been issued a new diplomatic passport by his younger brother Shehbaz's government, according to news reports. Pakistan allows former prime ministers and presidents to hold diplomatic passports, but Nawaz Sharif lost his when he was declared a proclaimed offender by a Pakistani court on corruption charges.
Sharif was also jailed for 7 years in a corruption case, but was allowed by the courts to travel abroad for medical treatment. He has been in London since 2019 when he went there for treatment.
Recently, current Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif met Nawaz in London, apparently to discuss the appointment of the new Army chief later in November, according to Pakistani media outlet Dawn. Shehbaz reportedly told media that Nawaz "is coming", and "failure is destined for Imran Khan".
