Pitroda stripped up a row in April this year when he backed the concept of inheritance tax citing the example of some states in the US.

The Congress party has reinstated Sam Pitroda as the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, a month after he stepped down following his controversial remarks. &nbsp;The reappointment was announced by the party in a statement on the 26th of June.
Pitroda stripped up a row in April this year when he backed the concept of inheritance tax citing the example of some states in the US. The remarks gave ammunition to the BJP to attack Congress on the issue of 'wealth redistribution'.
During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Pitroda triggered another controversy when he seemingly racially compared Indians to Chinese, Arabs, Whites, and Africans while talking about diversity and democracy in India.

Sam Pitroda resigned from the post of Indian Overseas Congress Chairman, after his illustration of India's racial diversity landed Congress in trouble back home.
In an interview with The Statesman, Pitroda said Indians from East, West, North and South resembled Chinese, Arabs, Whites and Africans.
His remarks went viral and triggered a political firestorm, with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the BJP's all-out attack on the Congress. Modi slammed Pitroda's comments as "racist" and asserted that people will not tolerate the attempt to insult them on the basis of their skin colour.
The Congress swiftly distanced itself from his words and criticised those as "most unfortunate and unacceptable". According to a PTI report, Pitroda stepped down, apparently after being nudged by the party leadership.
Pitroda was applauding how a country as diverse as India has stayed together for 75 years.
"People in the east look like the Chinese, people in the west look like the Arabs, people in the north look like, maybe, white and people in the south look like Africans. It does not matter. All of us are brothers and sisters. We respect different languages, different religions, different customs, different food," he said.
But Pitroda's choice of ethnic and racial identities in the analogy drew severe criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
At his rallies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Modi said he is livid with the racial profiling of Indians by the US-based "philosopher and uncle of shehzada (Rahul Gandhi)", and linked the Congress's opposition to Droupadi Murmu's presidential bid to its mindset, which saw her as an "African" because of her dark skin.
He asked the Congress chief ministers of Karnataka and Telangana, Siddaramaiah and A Revanth Reddy respectively, if they will accept "such an accusation".
The prime minister asked if Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin will snap the DMK's ties with the Congress for Tamil pride. "Do they have the guts?" he asked.
Pitroda's controversial comments came soon after his reference to inheritance tax in the United States while discussing the Congress's Lok Sabha poll manifesto gave the ruling BJP a potent handle to accuse the opposition party of eying citizens' assets as part of its "redistribution of wealth" policy.
As a row erupted, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on X: "The analogies drawn by Mr Sam Pitroda in a podcast to illustrate India's diversity are most unfortunate and unacceptable. The Indian National Congress completely dissociates itself from these analogies." Ramesh later announced Pitroda's decision to resign and that the Congress president has accepted it.

&nbsp;In an interview with The Statesman, Pitroda described India as a diverse country, "where people in the East look like Chinese, people in the West look like Arabs, people in the North maybe look White and people in the South resemble Africans".&nbsp;
Modi launched a scathing attack on Congress and Rahul Gandhi, saying, "Will a person's nationality be decided based on their skin colour? Who gave Shehzada the authority? Those who don't care about the Constitution are insulting people based on skin colour."
However, BJP's Tamil Nadu chief K Annamalai shrugged off the comments, asserting that there was "nothing wrong with looking like Africans."

After his statement on the inheritance tax sparked a massive row, Congress member Sam Pitroda courted another controversy with his so-called racist remarks.&nbsp;
In a video interview to the Telegraph, Pitroda said, "Pitroda described India as a "... diverse country... where people on East look like Chinese, people on West look like Arab, people on North look like maybe White and people in South look like Africa".&nbsp; He made these remarks while talking about India's diversity.
Pitroda was responding to a question about what the Congress has tried to make one of the fundamental issues of the 2024 Lok Sabha election - that the BJP, should it win this poll, will look to alter the basic nature of the country's socio-economic fabric, including by changing the Constitution.
Pitroda was referring to a "really divided country today based on ideas of India", saying, "It is not a question of who is right or wrong... but a question of what you believe in."
"... there is another view that says our founding fathers fought the British Raj not for a Hindu nation but for a secular nation. Pakistan decided to make a nation based on religion... you can see how that is going. We are a shining example of democracy in the world. We have survived 70-75 years in a very happy environment, leaving aside a few fights here and there," he said.
"... we are all brothers and sisters, we respect different languages, religions, customs, and food. As a Gujarati, I love dosa. So, if I go to Tamil Nadu and speak the local language, it is ok. I am still at home... that is my India, rooted in democracy, freedom, liberty, and fraternity," he declared.&nbsp;
The BJP strongly hit back, with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma calling on the Congress leader to have some understanding of India's diversity.
"Sam bhai, I am from the northeast, and I look like an Indian. We are a diverse country - we may look different, but we are all one," he said.&nbsp;
"Hamare desh ke bare mein thoda to samajh lo! (Please understand at least something about our country)" the senior BJP leader said.&nbsp;

Indian Overseas Congress chairman Sam Pitroda issued a clarification on his remarks on the inheritance tax following a massive uproar.&nbsp;
Taking to microblogging site X, Pitroda said that his words were twisted and that he merely stated it as a fact that is prevailing in America. The clarification comes amidst the BJP launching a salvo against the Congress, claiming that the party endorses implementing an inheritance tax in India.
"Who said 55% will be taken away? Who said something like this should be done in India? Why is BJP and media in panic ?" he said.
"I mentioned US inheritance tax in the US only as an example in my normal conversation on TV. Can I not mention facts? I said these are the kind of issues people will have to discuss and debate. This has nothing to do with the policy of any party including congress," he said on X.

Even as the BJP doubled down on the wealth redistribution plan announced in the Congress manifesto, Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress Sam Pitroda backed the Congress saying that it is necessary to tackle inequality.

Modi had said that Congress would survey everyone's property, and "it will calculate gold belonging to mothers and sisters and then redistribute it". They "won't even spare your mangalsutra," he had added.
Responding to this, Pitroda said, "It doesn't mean we are going to take their wealth and give it to somebody. It means to create new policies. So the concentration of wealth can be prevented. It's like the Monopoly Act. How do you read that I don't understand?&nbsp;
He also pitched for a US-like inheritance tax in India, calling it an interesting law.&nbsp;&nbsp;
In America, there is an inheritance tax. If one has $100 million worth of wealth and when he dies he can only transfer probably 45% to his children, 55% is grabbed by the government. That's an interesting law. It says you in your generation, made wealth and you are leaving now, you must leave your wealth for the public, not all of it, half of it, which to me sounds fair. In India, you don't have that. If somebody is worth 10 billion and he dies, his children get 10 billion and the public gets nothing."
"So these are the kind of issues people will have to debate and discuss. I don't know what the conclusion would be at the end of the day but when we talk about redistributing wealth, we are talking about new policies and new programs that are in the interest of the people and not in the interest of super-rich only."
