BCCI President Roger Binny could not stop gushing over the warm and friendly treatment they received in Pakistan on their short visit to the neighbouring nation while Board Vice President Rajeev Shukla asserted that cricket could be the bridge between the two countries that share a tense diplomatic relation.
Binny and Shukla returned to India via the Attari-Wagah border on Wednesday after watching Asia Cup matches on Pakistan Cricket Board's invitation.
It was first instance in 17 years that the two BCCI office bearers travelled to Pakistan. They had crossed the border on Monday.
"We had a very good meeting in Pakistan. We received very good hospitality. They took care of us very well. The main agenda was to watch cricket and to sit and discuss things with them. Overall, it was a very good trip," Binny told PTI after their arrival.
"Pakistan treated us very well, they went out of the way to make us comfortable." The two countries compete against each other only in ICC or ACC events as bilateral cricket ties have been suspended due to diplomatic tension between the two nations.
The last time an Indian cricket team travelled to Pakistan was back in 2008 for the Asia Cup. Pakistan last hosted India for a bilateral series in 2006.
Pakistan last visited India in 2012 for a white-ball tour.
Asked about the possibility of resumption of bilateral cricket with Pakistan, Binny reiterated that they can't take a call on that.
"BCCI can't say. It is a government issue, and they will have to take a call. We need to wait and see. And hopefully, it will happen because the (ODI) World Cup is coming up, Pakistan team will be in India to play." India and Pakistan are currently engaged in the Asia Cup in Sri Lankaand will lock horns again in the much-anticipated World Cup clash on October 14 in Ahmedabad.
Although there were reservations about Pakistan travelling to India for the World Cup, the PCB eventually agreed.
Shukla also praised PCB for its hospitality.
"The meeting was very good. The Pakistan Cricket Board took very good care of us. The security was tremendous, all the arrangements were fabulous. It was a goodwill visit for cricket which went well.
"The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mr Jay Shah is also BCCI secretary, so keeping in mind that, we had this visit. BCCI enjoys a good relationship will all the ACC members, that's why we also visited Sri Lanka."
On being asked if cricket can be a medium to restore peace between the two countries, he said, "Cricket has always been an important medium even before. Take the 2004 tour, for example; the atmosphere that was created resulted in a great friendship and trade delegations. The shopkeepers were not even taking money from people, that was a great atmosphere."
The first game between India and Pakistan in Asia Cup was washed out and the two teams will test each other again on Sunday in Colombo before a possible meeting in the final.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India President Roger Binny and Vice-President Rajeev Shukla arrived in Punjab's Amritsar before their departure to Lahore, Pakistan. Their visit comes in response to the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) invitation for the Asia Cup. Shukla and Binny will represent the BCCI in Pakistan and will travel to Lahore via the Wagah border.
This visit marks a significant development as it is the first time since the 2008 Mumbai terror attack that BCCI officials are visiting Pakistan. The persistent political tensions meant India decided against sending their team for this year's Asia Cup in Pakistan. Instead, Sri Lanka were chosen as co-hosts, with all matches involving the Indian cricket team taking place in the Island nation.

'I would like to clarify that I have not issued any statement regarding teh current situation of the wrestlers&rsquo; protest'

BCCI President Roger Binny on Friday said he was not a signatory to a statement on the wresters' protest against the WFI chief, hours after members of the 1983 World Cup-winning cricket team voiced support for the grapplers.
Binny, who became BCCI chief in October 2022, was part of the Indian cricket team that sealed a historic title triumph in the 1983 World Cup in England.
"Contrary to some media reports, I would like to clarify that I have not issued any statement regarding the current situation of the wrestlers’ protest," Binny told PTI.
"I believe that the competent authorities are working on resolving the issue. As a former cricketer, I believe that sports should not be mixed with politics," he added.
Earlier in the day, members of the 1983 World Cup winning came out in support of the protesting wrestlers and urged them not to take any hasty decision while hoping that players' issues will be "heard and resolved".
The statement said the team was distressed and disturbed after seeing the visuals of wrestlers being manhandled but also hoped that law of the land will prevail.
Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, who have been demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Birj Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual exploitation of women wrestlers, took their protest to Haridwar on May 30 but did not carry out the threat of immersing their medals into holy river Ganga.
On May 28, the Delhi Police had detained the wrestlers for violation of law and order when they marched towards the new Parliament building without permission.
The Police also cleared the protest site and made it clear that the wrestlers will not be allowed back at Jantar Mantar.
The police action against the wrestlers had invited criticism from different quarters.
"We are distressed and disturbed at the unseemly visuals of our champion wrestlers being manhandled. We are also most concerned that they are thinking of dumping their hard earned medals into river Ganga," the statement read.
"Those medals have involved years of effort, sacrifice, determination, and grit and are not only their own but the nation's pride and joy. We urge them not to take any hasty decision in this matter and also fervently hope that their grievances are heard and resolved quickly. Let the law of the land prevail," the statement read further.
Under legendary skipper Kapil Dev, the Indian cricket team had humbled the mighty Clive Lloyd led-West Indies to win the country's first World Cup trophy.
"I am not going to say anything individually, the whole of 1983 team stands by the statement we have issued," Kapil said.
It has been learnt that Kirit Azad, who was part of the 83 team and is now a Trinamool Congress member, sought approval only from Kapil and Madan Lal before issuing the statement.
The other members of the 83 batch include iconic Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, K Srikanth, Syed Kirmani, Yashpal Sharma, Madan Lal, Balwinder Singh Sandhu and Sandeep Patil.
The World Cup final was played at the Lord's on June 25, 1983.
Among other former Indian cricketers, Anil Kumble, Robin Uthappa and Irfan Pathan have shown solidarity with the elite wrestlers.
The active cricketers are yet to comment on the controversy.
Reigning Olympic champion in javelin throw, Neeraj Chopra and India's first individual Olympic gold medallist, shooter Abhinav Bindra have also expressed anguish that wrestlers were forced on to the streets while demanding justice.

Born on July 19 in 1955, Roger Binny was the first Anglo-Indian with Scottish origins to become a part of the Indian cricket team. Being an all-rounder in the game, he has proved to be a great servant for Indian cricket both on and off the field.

Binny showed his class once again at the 1985 World Championship in Australia, picking up 9 wickets from 4 games as India beat Pakistan in the final to lift the title.
He represented India in 27 Tests and 72 ODIs, snaffling 47 and 77 wickets respectively in the two formats. He was a decent lower-order batter during those times, averaging 23 in Tests and 16 in ODIs.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly broke his silence on the speculation of his exit from the Indian board and made it clear that his tenure as the chief will end soon.
During an event, Dada said, "I was the president of CAB for five years. I have been the president of BCCI for three years. I will go on to do something else now. 15 years of my cricketing career were the best. All these have terms after which you have to leave and go. The challenge as a cricketer is a lot more. As an administrator, you have to contribute so much. You have to make things better for the team. Me being a player, who played for a long period of time, understood that. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Establish the brand across the world."

Roger Binny is all set to replace Ganguly as the new BCCI president soon and reportedly, Dada refused to accept the post of becoming the new IPL chairman.
