Punjab Kings' skipper Shreyas Iyer on Monday thanked head coach Ricky Ponting for giving him the "freedom to go out and express myself" as the side sealed a spot in the Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025 with a convincing seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians here.
Iyer joined PBKS after guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title last season, and he made an instant impact, guiding the Punjab outfit to its first-ever playoffs since 2014.
"The camaraderie has been there for the past few years between Ricky and I, he gives me a lot of freedom. He lets me be decisive on the field, all these things have culminated in a great way," Iyer said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
"Every individual stepped up at the right time. Starting from game one, we've been in the mindset of wanting to win despite the situation. We've had players putting their hands up when we were in the dumps. Kudos to support staff and management too.
"Ricky has been fantastic with player management; it's important for me to get trust too. That happened with the wins early on. Had conversations with them too. You have to maintain good relationships throughout. I feel the dressing room has been top notch throughout. When you are down in the dumps, it is easy to backstab each other," he added.
Iyer also lauded Priyansh Arya (62 off 35 balls) and Josh Inglis (73 off 42) for their brilliant knocks.
"The way Priyansh started was fabulous; young players are fearless. They tick the boxes in the nets; the effects of the prep is now showing on the field.
"Inglis is the only player whose position has been chopping and changing. Since he loves playing the new ball, I wanted him to play more deliveries. It worked wonders. We know he's destructive and a big-match player with a great attitude," he said.
MI skipper Hardik Pandya believed they were 20 runs short of what could have been a winning score.
"The way the wicket played, we were definitely 20 runs short. That happens, we've been playing really good cricket, we couldn't play our best cricket.
"We were definitely 20 runs short. We could have capitalised either at the start or in the middle; we'll figure it out," he said.
Pandya said it was a wake-up call for MI before they head into the playoffs.
"IPL is like that; this franchise has won five trophies, and it has always been tough. Anytime you take your leg off the accelerator, the other teams are also keen to win. The message would be simple: This was just a blip; learn from this and look forward to the knockouts," he said.
He said MI's bowling unit was not clinical on Monday.
"They really took on certain balls whenever we erred, and I don't think as a bowling unit we were clinical; we gave some balls that they really capitalised and at certain times, they played some good shots as well.
"Overall, we were not up to the mark."

With 70 matches as captain across two franchises, Iyer has achieved 38 wins, 29 losses, and 2 draws. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title last year.

Konstas might have dismissed it as routine but former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting blamed Kohli for instigating the exchange.

Virat Kohli and Australian youngster Sam Konstas were on Thursday involved in a physical altercation because of which the Indian superstar was fined 20 per cent of his match fee and handed a demerit point even though it was played down as an accidental bump by the 19-year-old debutant.
The brief showdown took place after the 10th over of the Australian innings on the opening day of the fourth Test here when the players were crossing over. Kohli and Konstas bumped shoulders while moving across the pitch in the face off that was initiated by the travelling star.
Kohli was eventually charged with breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct by on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Shawn Craig.
He accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft at the end of day's play.
"Virat Kohli has been fined 20 percent of his match fee and awarded one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct," the ICC said in a statement.
"No formal hearing was needed as Kohli accepted the sanctions propsed by Match Referee Andy Pycroft," it added.
After the physical contact, both players quickly turned around to glance at each other and engage in a heated exchange of words before Konstas' teammate Usman Khawaja stepped in to separate them. The on-field umpires also had a word with the two and things cooled down rather quickly.
Speaking to reporters after stumps, Konstas said Kohli bumped into him but it wasn't deliberate.
"I was just doing my gloves and I think he accidentally bumped me. I think that's just cricket and can happen with tension," said the teenager.
"I think the emotions got to both of us," Konstas had told 'Channel 7' during the second session.
The ICC's Code of Conduct states that "any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricket. Without limitation, players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another player or umpire".
Konstas, who was batting on 27 at the time, went on to hit Jasprit Bumrah for two boundaries and a six in the next over.
The teenager scored a stunning fifty on debut before Ravindra Jadeja trapped him leg before wicket.
India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who addressed the media in the end-of-day press conference, also brushed aside the incident as nothing big.
"When you play a game, there will be emotions but it is not as big as it seems. I wasn't aware of what happened and don't know what was said," he said in response to queries.

"Have a look where Virat walks. Virat's walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind whatsoever," Ponting said on Channel 7 while watching the replay of the incident.
"I have no doubt that the umpires and the referee will have a good look at that. Fielders should be nowhere near the batsman at that stage.
"It looked to me that Konstas looked up really late, wouldn't even know anyone is in front of him. That man on-screen there (Kohli) might have a few questions to answer," Ponting added.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who was at the helm during Kohli's captaincy, said the run-in was unnecessary.
"There is a line and you don't want to overstep that line. That's unnecessary, totally unnecessary. You don't want to see that. You know Virat is a senior player, he has been captain of the side," he said on 'Fox Sports'.
"He will have his own explanations for this but it's something you don't want to see. One person who would be watching, his eyes locked into the proceedings is Andy Pycroft," he added.

Ponting, who is also currently the head coach of IPL side Delhi Capitals, signed a two-year deal with the Washington Freedom, owned by Indian-American businessman Sanjay Govil.

Ponting, who is also currently the head coach of IPL side Delhi Capitals, signed a two-year deal with the Washington Freedom, owned by Indian-American businessman Sanjay Govil.
Ponting, also a hugely successful former Australia captain, replaced compatriot Greg Shipperd at the helm of the Washington DC-based franchise.
The second season of the T20 League, to be competed among six teams, is set to be played in July, just a few days after the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in June.
"I'm extremely excited to be joining the Washington Freedom in 2024. Cricket is really on the rise in the US and I'm looking forward to being involved in Major League Cricket," Ponting said in a statement.
Ponting said he consulted the Delhi Capitals owners if they have any issue with him taking up the top job at the Washington Freedom, as the IPL team has stakes in the MLC side.
"When I was first approached, the first thing I did was actually get on the phone to Delhi and see if they had any issue with it," Ponting was quoted as saying in 'Sydney Morning Herald'.
"They (Delhi Capitals) are a small shareholder in one of the other teams, but they were fine. They had no issue with me at all, which is great."
Delhi Capitals co-owners GMR Group has stakes at another MLC franchise - the Seattle Orcas. Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella is the other owner of the Seattle-based franchise.
There was speculation that some top Australian players would also be interested in playing at the MLC. Cricket New South Wales took up a high-performance partnership role with the Washington Freedom last year.
&ldquo;My job now, with the relationships I&rsquo;ve had with some of these guys, hopefully those relationships and the right amount of money is enough to bring them to the Freedom,&rdquo; said Ponting, who has also earlier coached IPL side Mumbai Indians.
&ldquo;I think there&rsquo;s huge potential, huge growth possibilities in the US, even with the IPL ownership model the way it is at the moment, I just think it&rsquo;s got potential to become huge and I want to be a part of that journey along the way.&rdquo; Owners of Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders also own teams in the MLC. Four of the six teams in America's T20 league will have owners from IPL.

The second edition of the MLC is scheduled to begin in early July, a few days after the ICC T20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies and USA.

"We're not there yet. I haven't committed to anything just yet, but I've had some initial discussions (with Washington)," Ponting told SEN.
"The time of the year sort of fits in okay for me, but I've got a really hectic off-season again. When I say off-season, there's no such thing as an off-season for cricketers anymore," he said.
Ponting is set to coach Delhi Capitals in the IPL for a sixth successive season in 2024, and is also set to do commentary duties during the T20 World Cup for Channel 7.
Hence, the former Australia captain is currently weighing his options before fully committing to the stint at MLC.
"It's potentially another big year of time away if I want it, so there are things I've got to work through," Ponting said.
"If I'm actually going to be commentating the T20 World Cup or not and if I'm not doing that, where does MLC fit in," he added.

Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has called India middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav a trailblazer, who could inspire a new breed of players to emulate his style of play and take T20 cricket to "another level" globally.
Suryakumar, 32, was recently named the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year after he became only the second batter in the world to score 1000-plus runs in a calendar year in the shortest format of the game. Surya scored two centuries and nine half-tons on way to amassing 1,164 runs in 2022, only second behind Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan who leads the charts with 1,326 runs in 2021.
"I think innovation-wise, skill-wise, I haven't seen a better player (than Suryakumar) in the game," Ponting told ICC on Friday.
"What it's going to do as well, a lot of other players are going to try and do the things he's doing and it's going to add another level of skill to the T20 game all around the world.
"Someone said during the IPL this year (2022), there are going to be guys who are going to try and do exactly the same as what Surya's doing, and that's going to be great for the game," added the Australian great.
Surya's 1,100-plus runs last year came in 31 T20Is at an astonishing strike rate of 187.43 and an average of 46.56, which also propelled him to the top of the ICC Men's T20I Batting Rankings.
Ponting also called the India cricketer as the greatest innovator in the shortest version, comparing his style of batting with South African white-ball specialist AB de Villiers and former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist.
"He's probably doing it better than anyone's ever done it right now. We talk about players that can score 360 degrees &hellip; some of the shots he's hitting back behind the wicket-keeper and over fine leg are just remarkable." Ponting said he noticed Surya's innate talent a few years back in the IPL where he was making flicking the ball over deep-backward square look so easy.
The former skipper added that the batter has taken his stroke-play to another level and is playing some really audacious shots like flicking short balls for sixes over the wicket-keeper's head.
"Five or six years ago, he started doing that (innovating) a lot in the IPL. He was very good at flicking the ball over deep-backwards square and getting the ball over fine-leg," Ponting said.
"Surya's now been able to hit short balls on the way up and flick short balls over the keeper's head and they're going for six, not just for four." Ponting said that initially he thought Suryakumar would never touch such heights, but his work ethics and strenuous regimen have resulted in his success.
The cricketer scored the third-most runs at the T20 World Cup -- 239 -- in Australia, which was only behind Virat Kohli (296) and the Dutchman Max O'Dowd (242).
He then continued the good work in the T20I series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka to climb to the second-highest T20 batting rating ever recorded -- 908 points.
"I didn't think he'd get to the level he's got to, to be quite honest," Ponting said.
"He's worked as hard as he has -- you can probably tell by his body shape. He's probably fitter than he's ever been, being around the Indian set up with the likes of Kohli and Shreyas Iyer and these guys, who are exceptionally fit young guys.

Ponting said that if the 25-year-old is able to travel and can be with the team, then he would want Pant sitting beside him in the dugout every day in IPL 2023.

Pant was on his way from Delhi to Roorkee when his car met with a horrific accident on December 29. He has been ruled out of the IPL and is currently recovering after undergoing a series of surgeries in Mumbai.
