Budget 2024: Ahead of the Budget, the National Restuarant Association of India (NRAI) has called for key reforms in the restaurant industry. The association is aiming at a comprehensive overhaul of the sector.
<h3>NRAI's proposal</h3>
NRAI in a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has proposed the reinstatement of input tax credit for Goods and Service Tax (GST). Input tax credit is the GST paid by a registered person on the purchase of goods or services that are used for the furtherance of business.
The association has argued that this would help restaurants that are currently operating under 5% GST without the benefits of input tax credit. In order to balance it out, the association has suggested increasing the GST rate to 12%. The association believes that this would streamline compliance and enhance profitability, particularly for smaller enterprises.

"&hellip;While restaurants below a certain revenue threshold can continue with the current GST provisions, the organised sector with higher revenues and capex outlay may move towards the proposed GST regime," Kabir Suri, president of the association and co-founder and director of Azure Hospitality Pvt Ltd, which runs the popular Mamagoto chain of restaurants told Mint.
The association has also proposed setting up of a dedicated food services ministry or department. As per the association a separate department is required as the industry contributes approximately Rs 4.23 trillion annually. It said that a separate body would streamline the currently fragmented regulatory framework, simplifying compliance and fostering growth.
As per Mint the other demands put forth by the association includes, "industry status" for the sector to access easier financing and subsidies, the formulation of a balanced e-commerce policy to protect restaurants from unfair competition, and addressing operational challenges like the reduction of GST on commercial rentals and the simplification of licensing processes.
Furthermore, it has also advocated for extended business hours, which it believes will accelerate India's progress towards becoming a $5 trillion economy. It also called for targeted subsidy schemes and easier access to debt financing for SMEs, particularly in smaller towns and cities.

Customers in India tip restaurant waiters as a token of appreciation for their services. It has always been optional in India. However, over the past five years restaurants have been adding service charge by default to the bill, making it a forced payment instead of optional.&nbsp;&nbsp;
A survey conducted by LocalCircles, a community social media platform has revealed that 43% consumers in India are still being billed service charges in the past three months. Out of this only 9% manage to remove them after asserting their rights. This despite the guidelines issued by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) in 2022.

The survey included over 11,000 citizens from 303 districts across India. 66% respondents were men and 34% were women. 47% respondents came from tier-1 cities, 36% from tier 2 and 17% from tier 3, 4 and rural districts.
The survey also noted that though there has been an improvement in the situation, the consumers are still being exploited. Their July 2022 survey revealed that 71% respondents had been forced to pay service charges in the last five years as it was included in the bill though the service was unsatisfactory. Among the respondents, 23% had stated it happened once or twice, 18% said it happened three to five times and 24% respondents revealed it had happened as many as six to 10 times, while it happened more than 10 timed to 6% of the respondents.
The CCPA in July 2022 had said that restaurants are prohibited from adding service charges automatically to the bills. However, Delhi HC had stayed the CCPA's guidelines temporarily and urged the Industry stakeholders to take a lead in the matter. This has put consumers in a fix as they are made to pay service charges forcefully even if the service is not satisfactory.
The survey has also revealed that consumers are expecting the service charge bill to come with options for the them to consent, fill, or check the box instead of being a forceful one.&nbsp;

The study, which was commissioned by Barclaycard Payments and conducted by OnePoll, also stated that many pollers check the menu on social media before placing an order.

Later they will be able to pick up the catering items as per their convenience and able to pick up their order from the kiosk box number.&nbsp;
The company said that by visiting VendiGo's portal, the consumer can place the order as well as decide the time and place of pick-up. After the payment of the order, the consumer will be able to pick up their order from the kiosk box number.&nbsp;

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority held a meeting on January 10, a day after Covid cases rose by 22,751, making the positivity rate hit 23.5%. Delhi restaurants may soon be shut for the dine-in option, although takeaways might still be allowed, reports quoted sources as saying. Currently, dine-in facility is allowed with up to 50% capacity.

 Also, private offices may have to follow 100% work from home policy, as per reports. Right now, it is restricted to 50%. There is also a night and weekend curfew in place in the national capital. The DDMA also discussed seating capacity issue in the Delhi metro and buses. Currently, 100% seating is allowed.
 The possibility of imposing economic and travel restrictions throughout the national capital region, which covers neighbouring cities, was reportedly discussed.
 Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal had chaired the DDMA meeting which was also attended by CM Arvind Kejriwal, and his ministers and top officials.

Mumbai gets two floating restaurants, Queensline Sea Yah and Queensline Neverland. The 'floatels' have banquet halls, open decks and bars along with a capacity of 475 people each. The two 'floatels' have been anchored a kilometer away from the Gateway of India. There will be a cover charge of Rs 2500 and the restaurants will be open from 12 pm till midnight.

India's first Fly Dining restaurant comes to Bengaluru. You can dine 160 feet up in the sky, there are 22 chairs and the table is lifted by a crane. Enjoy an aerial view of Nagawara Lake and the lush green surroundings. Safety belts are provided and there is a minimum height requirement of 4 to 5 inches! Fly Dining has been launched by Jumpking India.

Popeyes surely knows how to celebrate! To mark the opening of their 3000th restaurant serving Louisiana fried chicken, they offered 24 Karat Champagne Wings hand tossed in edible gold flakes. The 3,000th Popeyes restaurant is located in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The First outlet of Popeyes opened in 1972, New Orleans. The wings were available for a limited time only, making the occasion extremely special.
