Indian Navy has been adjudged the best marching contingent among the three wings of the armed forces at this year's Republic Day Parade, officials have said.
Maharashtra won the top prize in the category of states and Union Territories for its tableau showcasing Ganeshotsav, while the culture ministry's tableau celebrating the 150-year legacy of 'Vande Mataram' emerged as the winner in the ministries and departments category.
The Navy's marching contingent comprised 144 young personnel marching shoulder-to-shoulder on the historic Kartavya Path, symbolising it as a progressive and strong maritime force, Navy officials said on Wednesday.
The Navy's marching contingent won the top prize in the best marching contingent among the three services, while Delhi Police's contingent was adjudged the best marching contingent among Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and other auxiliary forces, they said.
In the state and Union Territories tableau category, Jammu and Kashmir won the second prize, followed by Kerala in third place.
Maharashtra's tableau presented a blend of modernity and tradition, portraying the Ganesh festival as a symbol of self-reliance. Dressed in traditional attire, a troupe of women dancers performed Lezim, a folk dance, on either side of the tableau during the parade on the ceremonial boulevard.
The culture ministry's tableau celebrated 150 years of 'Vande Mataram', showcasing the song's composition by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, a colonial-era recording by a famous Marathi singer and its rendition by a group representing the 'Gen Z'.
Themed 'Vande Mataram: The Soul-Cry of a Nation', the tableau's foreground section depicted the manuscript of 'Vande Mataram' being composed, while a panel on its lower side depicted an image of Chatterjee.
The middle section carried a group of artistes in traditional costumes, depicting the folk diversity of India, while some were seen in modern dresses, representing the 'Gen Z'.
Behind them, a series of art installations showcased celebrated actor and musician of Marathi cinema and theatre, Vishnupant Pagnis, recording the song, freedom fighters facing the gallows, and an imposing image of 'Bharat Mata' (Mother India) holding the Tricolour. The depiction was of the rare 1928 recording of the song by him, an official said.
The award presentation ceremony will take place on January 30 at the Rashtriya Rangshala Camp, another official said.
A special prize was awarded to the Central Public Works Department's tableau, which celebrated 150 years of 'Vande Mataram' with a floral float; and the 'Vande Mataram: The Eternal Resonance of India' dance group, officials said.
In the 'Popular Choice' category, based on an online poll conducted on the MyGov portal, citizens voted the Assam Regiment as the best marching contingent among the three services, while the CRPF won the award for the best marching contingent among the CAPFs and other auxiliary forces.
Gujarat secured the top spot in the popular choice category for states and Union territories with its tableau themed 'Mantra of Swadeshi-Self-Reliance-Freedom: Vande Mataram', followed by Uttar Pradesh (theme - Culture of Bundelkhand) and Rajasthan (theme - Golden Touch of the Desert: Bikaner Gold Art).
The Department of School Education and Literacy's tableau (theme - National Education Policy) was chosen as the best tableau from central ministries and departments in the 'Popular Choice' category, they said.

Trump's message was put out on social media by the US embassy in New Delhi.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also extended greetings to India on the occasion of the Republic Day and said the two nations share a "historic bond".
"From our close cooperation on defense, energy, critical minerals, and emerging technologies to our multi-layered engagement through the Quad, the US-India relationship delivers real results for our two countries and for the Indo-Pacific region," he said.
"I look forward to working together to advance our shared objectives in the year ahead," Rubio said in a statement.
US ambassador to India Sergio Gor also greeted India after attending the Republic Day celebrations at the Kartavya Path.
"Happy Republic Day, India! Honored to attend the Republic Day Parade for the first time, a celebration of India&rsquo;s Constitution and democratic spirit. Thrilled to see the US-made aircraft soaring in the Indian sky, a powerful symbol of the strength of the US-India strategic partnership," he said.
US-origin transport aircraft C-130J and Apache helicopters were among the aerial platforms that figured in the parade.
The India-US ties witnessed a major downturn after President Donald Trump slapped a whopping 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, including a 25 per cent punitive levy over Russian oil purchases.
Both sides have held multiple rounds of negotiations last year to firm up the proposed bilateral trade deal. However, it could not be sealed yet, largely in view of Washington's demands to open up India's farm and dairy sectors.
Apart from the tariff issue, the relations came under strain on a number of other issues that included US President Donald Trump's claim of ending the India-Pakistan conflict in May last year and Washington's new immigration policy.

It was the first time that two top leaders of the European Union (EU) attended India's Republic Day celebrations as chief guests.
Costa and von der Leyen, accompanied by a high-powered delegation, will hold summit talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
A small EU military contingent also participated in the Republic Day parade.
At the parade, India displayed its military might that included elite marching contingents, missiles and indigenous weapon systems.
Every year, India invites world leaders to attend its Republic Day celebrations.
Last year, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was the Republic Day chief guest while French President Emmanuel Macron graced the occasion in 2024.

In 2015, then US President Barack Obama watched the parade as the chief guest.
The previous year, then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the chief guest at the celebrations, while Bhutan king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck attended the parade in 2013.
The heads of state and government who have attended the Republic Day celebrations also include Nicolas Sarkozy, Vladimir Putin, Nelson Mandela, John Major, Mohammed Khatami and Jacques Chirac.
The then British Prime Minister John Major had attended the celebrations in 1993, Nelson Mandela participated as the then South African President in 1995, while South Korean President Lee Myung Bak witnessed the parade in 2010.
In 2008, Sarkozy participated in the celebrations as French President, while another French President, Jacques Chirac, graced the occasion in 1998.

Xi emphasised that China has always believed that being good neighbours, friends and partners who help each other succeed, and achieving the "dragon and the elephant dancing together," is the right choice for both China and India, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Relations between the two countries, which came to a standstill since 2020 after the Eastern Ladakh standoff, began improving following two summits between PM Modi and President Xi.
Both leaders first met in Kazan in 2024, followed by another meeting at Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO summit in August last year.
In August, PM Modi and President Xi agreed to deepen bilateral ties to combat pressing challenges and work towards a "fair" solution to the festering border issue.
In the last few months, India and China have initiated a series of measures to normalise their relations after ending the over four-year military face-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
In July, India resumed granting tourist visas for Chinese nationals.
Issuance of visas to Chinese nationals was suspended following the start of the military stand-off along the LAC in eastern Ladakh that began in May 2020.
India and China have, in recent months, agreed on several people-centric steps to reset their ties.
These include agreement to resume Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, resumption of direct flights, commemoration of 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and visa facilitation.

India ushered in its 77th Republic Day on Monday with a grand display of its cultural diversity, economic growth, and military prowess that included missiles, warplanes, newly-raised units and lethal weapon systems used during Operation Sindoor.
President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, graced the celebrations as chief guests, marking a significant diplomatic moment alongside the military display.
Although the overarching theme of the event was 150 years of 'Vande Mataram', the Indian military's Operation Sindoor too found prominence at the parade on the Kartavya Path, the centrepiece boulevard of the national capital.
The parade commenced with the President Droupadi Murmu taking the salute shortly after she, Costa and von der Leyen, flanked by the Indian president's bodyguards, arrived at the Kartavya Path in a traditional buggy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, several other Union ministers, the country's top military brass, foreign diplomats, and senior officials were among the spectators.
The major weapon systems displayed included BrahMos and Akash weapon systems, rocket launcher 'Suryastra', Main Battle Tank Arjun and an array of indigenously-built military platforms and hardware.
Around 100 artistes heralded the parade, on the theme 'Vividata Mein Ekta (Unity in Diversity) that featured a grand presentation of musical instruments, demonstrating the nation's unity and rich cultural diversity.

The recce element consisted of the 61 Cavalry in active combat uniform.
It was followed by a high mobility reconnaissance vehicle.
Providing aerial support was the indigenous Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and its armed version, Rudra, in Prahar formation, demonstrating battlefield shaping.
The combat elements then followed with T-90 Bhisma and Main Battle Tank Arjun rolling past the saluting dais with aerial support from Apache AH-64E and Prachand light combat helicopters.
Other mechanised columns included BMP-II Infantry Combat Vehicle, along with Nag missile system (Tracked) Mk-2.
A military contingent from the EU, carrying the military staff flag and flags of Operations Atalanta and Aspides, the naval operations of the grouping, also featured at the parade.
It was the EU's first participation in such an event outside of Europe.
Among the major weapon systems showcased at the parade were Suryastra Universal Rocket Launcher System (URLS), Brahmos Supersonic cruise missiles and Akash missile systems.
The Indian Navy contingent comprised 144 young personnel, led by Lt Karan Nagyal as contingent commander, and Lt Pawan Kumar Gandi, Lt Priti Kumari and Lt Varun Dreveriya as platoon commanders.
It was followed by the Naval tableau that presented a vivid depiction of the theme 'Strong Navy for a Strong Nation'.
It depicted a stitched ship from the fifth century CE, now christened INSV Kaundinya, Gurab-class ships of the Maratha Navy, and frontline indigenous platforms, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and INS Udayagiri.
The tableau featured a depiction of the circumnavigation route followed by INSV Tarini as part of the Navika Sagar Parikrama-II expedition.
In addition to naval personnel, young cadets from the Sea Cadets Corps, a non-governmental organisation that imparts basic nautical skills to youth in Mumbai, marched alongside the tableau.
The Indian Air Force contingent comprised four officers and 144 airmen.
The contingent commander was Squadron Leader Jagdesh Kumar with Squadron Leader Nikita Choudhery, Flt Lt Prakhar Chandrakar and Flt Lt Dinesh as supernumerary officers.
Syncing with the marching contingent was a thrilling fly-past by two Rafale jets, two MiG-29s, two Su-30s and one Jaguar aircraft in 'Spearhead' formation, symbolising the "Sindoor Formation".
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) showcased its hypersonic glide missile LR-AShM.
It is capable of engaging static and moving targets and is designed to carry various payloads.
The missile has a first-of-its-kind indigenous avionics system and high-accuracy sensor packages.
A total of 30 tableaux -- 17 of states and Union Territories and 13 of various ministries and departments rolled down the Kartavya Path.
The tableaux showcased a unique mix of 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram and the nation's rapid progress.
A joint 'DareDevils' team of motorcycle riders drawn from the Central Reserve Police Force and the Sashastra Seema Bal enthralled the audience with their manoeuvres.
The aerial fly-past, one of the most eagerly-awaited events of the parade, witnessed the participation of a total of 29 aircraft, including 16 fighter jets, four transport aircraft and nine helicopters.
These include Rafale, Su-30 MKI, MiG-29 and Jaguar aircraft, complemented by strategic assets - C-130 and C-295, as well as the Indian Navy's P-8i aircraft.
The formations include Arjan, Vajraang, Varuna and Vijay.

Delhi Traffic Police will deploy AI videos, shuttle services, car-calling systems, and expanded help desks to ensure seamless traffic flow and parking during Republic Day and Beating Retreat events.

From AI-generated informational videos to car-calling systems, Delhi Traffic Police has rolled out a slew of technology-driven measures to ensure smooth traffic flow and a hassle-free commute for people heading to Kartavya Path for the Republic Day parade and the Beating Retreat ceremony.
In a first, the traffic police has prepared detailed animated videos with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), depicting the arrival, alighting, departure and parking plans for invitees. Officials said the videos are aimed at familiarising visitors with the movement and parking arrangements well in advance.
The videos are available on the Ministry of Defence website and can also be accessed through the QR code-based parking system issued to invitees. They explain in detail how arrival, alighting and parking will be managed on the day of the event, a senior police officer told PTI.
The parking management system covers 22 designated parking lots and has been designed to accommodate around 8,000 vehicles. Every year, nearly 77,000 passes are issued to spectators for the Republic Day parade, of which about 8,000 are earmarked for those arriving by private vehicles, the police said.
Another first this year is the introduction of shuttle services for security personnel deployed for Republic Day arrangements. Shuttles will operate from four locations&mdash;Khan Market, Amrita Sher-Gil Marg, Patel Chowk Metro Station and HC Mathur Lane&mdash;to ferry personnel to their respective destinations. The shuttles will run at a frequency of 10 minutes, he said.
To assist commuters in reaching their designated parking areas on Republic Day, invited guests and ticket holders can use Google Maps or Mappls for real-time navigation support. A senior police officer said the platforms will provide details of appropriate routes to Kartavya Path and the exact location of allotted parking spots. On Mappls, a dedicated Republic Day tab has been created, while Google Maps will display specially marked parking locations along with entry and exit routes to help visitors reach their destinations without confusion, he said.
Apart from digital assistance, the traffic police has significantly expanded on-ground support by setting up 12 help desks at key locations&mdash;up from just two in previous years. Personnel deployed at these help desks will guide commuters on parking facilities, pedestrian movement routes and security arrangements, the officer said. The help desks will be located at Moti Lal Nehru Place roundabout, Sunehri Masjid roundabout, Man Singh roundabout, Jaswant Singh roundabout, GPO roundabout, Windsor Place roundabout, Mandi House roundabout, Q-point, Teen Murti roundabout, Crossing Janpath/Dr Rajendra Prasad Road, Gate number 14 of Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium and Palika Parking, they added.
Car-calling systems have also been introduced this year to avoid crowding after the conclusion of the programme and to ensure smooth dispersal of invitees. Under the system, invitees can inform an officer stationed at the exit gate, following which announcements mentioning the car number or the driver&rsquo;s name will be made. The information will be relayed through loudspeakers installed at parking areas, enabling drivers to reach the exit gate in a timely manner.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rajiv Kumar said technology is being leveraged on a large scale this year to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians and to make the experience seamless for those attending the national celebrations.
To ensure effective coordination among various agencies, a control room will remain operational on January 26. The facility will not be limited to Republic Day alone and will also be available during the Beating Retreat ceremony scheduled to be held on January 29, he said.&nbsp;
"This initiative will help visitors reach their designated parking areas without inconvenience and reduce congestion on key routes," he added.&nbsp;
The defence ministry has also shared animated videos on its website related to parking arrangements to assist visitors, the officer said. A QR code-based parking system has been introduced to assist spectators arriving by vehicles. The system covers 22 designated parking lots and is aimed at accommodating nearly 8,000 vehicles.&nbsp;
Under the arrangement, parking pass holders can scan QR codes printed on their passes to access real-time directions to parking lots closest to their seating enclosures.&nbsp;
Around 77,000 passes are issued to spectators for the Republic Day parade every year, of which about 8,000 are designated for those arriving by vehicles.&nbsp;

Air India has issued a crucial advisory for passengers traveling to and from Delhi, advising them to plan extra travel time and check flight statuses due to the upcoming Republic Day celebrations on January 26. The advisory, shared on the airline's official X account, stated:
"#ImportantUpdate Passengers travelling to and from Delhi between 19 &amp; 26 Jan 2025, are requested to allow themselves more time and check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, due to Republic Day restrictions. For any further assistance, connect with our contact centre."

Earlier in the day, Air India had also warned of potential disruptions caused by dense fog and airport congestion. "Poor visibility due to dense fog and airport congestion may affect flight operations in Delhi and some other cities today," the airline noted.
Delhi woke up to a thick layer of fog on Wednesday, drastically reducing visibility and adding to the already severe air pollution levels in the city. The city's Air Quality Index (AQI) plunged into the 'very poor' category, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recording an AQI of 344 at 7 a.m., a significant drop from 252 at the same time the previous day.
Detailed AQI data revealed some of the worst-affected areas in Delhi. Vivek Vihar recorded the highest AQI of 414, signaling severe pollution. Other notable figures included Nehru Nagar at 394, Rohini at 399, and Wazirpur at 408. Areas like Okhla Phase-2 (380) and RK Puram (373) also reported alarming levels.
An AQI range between 301 and 400 is classified as 'very poor,' posing a serious health risk, especially to vulnerable groups, while readings above 400 are deemed 'severe,' indicating hazardous air quality. The ongoing cold wave in the capital has further exacerbated the pollution crisis.
Passengers traveling during this period are urged to stay updated on travel advisories and take necessary precautions to avoid inconvenience amid the Republic Day restrictions and environmental challenges.

The Indian government has invited nearly 10,000 special guests to witness the 76th Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path, New Delhi. Among the invitees are top-performing sarpanches, Paralympic athletes, handloom artisans, and forest conservation workers.

Members of Paralympic contingent, sarpanches from top-performing villages, handloom artisans, and forest and wildlife conservation workers are among the nearly 10,000 special guests invited to witness the 76th Republic Day Parade at the Kartavya Path in New Delhi, the government said on Thursday.
"These architects of 'Swarnim Bharat', with diverse backgrounds, include best performers in various fields and those who have made best use of the schemes of the government," the defence ministry said in a statement.
In line with the objective to increase 'Jan Bhagidari' (public participation) in events of national importance, approximately 10,000 special guests have been invited to witness the Republic Day Parade, it said.
The ministry also shared that these special guests have been drawn fro diverse areas and fields, falling into 31 categories.
'Sarpanches from top performing village', 'Disaster Relief Workers', 'Best performing Water Warriors', 'Guests from Vibrant Villages', 'Guests from North Eastern States', 'Best Patent Holders', 'Best Start-Ups', 'Road Construction Workers' are some of these categories.
The invitees also include handloom artisans, members of Paralympic contingent and forest and wildlife conservation workers, according to the statement.

It is known for its graceful movements, intricate footwork, and expressive storytelling through hand gestures, facial expressions, and body postures. Odissi often depicts mythological themes and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Odisha.
Manipuri Raas Leela: Manipuri Raas Leela is a classical dance that celebrates the divine love story of Lord Krishna and the Gopis (milkmaids) of Vrindavan. Manipuri Raas Leela is characterized by its gentle, fluid movements, colorful costumes, and use of symbolic props like the Radha-Krishna idol and cymbals. The dance portrays the deep devotion, love, and playful interactions between Lord Krishna and the Gopis, making it an integral part of Manipuri culture and a significant art form in India.
