Kashmir prepares for Republic Day with multi-tier security, public invited to attend

Multi-tier security arrangements, including drones and spotters, have been deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of Republic Day celebrations in Kashmir, Inspector General of Police (IGP) V.K. Birdi announced on Friday. The main event is scheduled to take place at Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar, on January 26.

Speaking after a full dress rehearsal at the venue, Birdi assured the public of “proper and secure arrangements” and urged people to participate in large numbers. “Surveillance measures, including drones and spotters, are in place, along with intricate security arrangements,” he said. Special monitoring is also being conducted on “bad elements,” including surrendered militants, following the police’s standard operating procedures.

On allegations of leniency towards major players in the narcotics trade, Birdi stated that investigations are ongoing, and habitual offenders will face legal action.

Divisional Commissioner V.K. Bhiduri, who also attended the rehearsal, echoed the call for public participation, emphasizing that the Bakshi Stadium was chosen to accommodate large crowds. “This is a festival of the people, and we want everyone to join. Just carry an ID card—no special pass is required,” he said, adding that this year’s arrangements are more comprehensive than in previous years.

The authorities are working to ensure that the Republic Day functions are a celebration of unity, inviting residents to take part while maintaining stringent security protocols.
