Sri Lanka&rsquo;s ex-president Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested by CID for allegedly using state funds to attend his wife&rsquo;s convocation in England during a private trip in 2023.

Sri Lanka's former president Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested on Friday for allegedly misusing the state funds, police said.
Wickremesinghe, 76, was arrested at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, where he was summoned to record a statement in connection with an investigation into the alleged misuse of government funds, police said.
He has been accused of using state funds to travel to England to attend a convocation ceremony of his wife, Prof Maithree, in September 2023.
It has been alleged that Wickremesinghe was returning from the US after an official engagement and visited the UK at the state's expense to attend the private engagement of his wife.
The CID had previously questioned his staff about the travel expenses.
Wickremesinghe, who had replaced Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the President to serve the balance term until the end of 2024, was credited with steering Sri Lanka out of the economic crisis of 2022. He was president from July 2022 to September 2024.
The veteran politician also served as Sri Lanka's prime minister six times.&nbsp;

In the clip, Wickremesinghe asked Banerjee if she would be leading the opposition alliance (INDIA).
"Can I ask you one question? Are you going to lead the opposition alliance?" asked Wickremesinghe.&nbsp;
Surprised by the unexpected question, the TMC chief said, &ldquo;Oh my god! It depends on people.&rdquo;
Later, Wickremesinghe repeated the question to an official present there, &ldquo;Is she going to lead the opposition alliance?&rdquo;
In response, Banerjee said, &ldquo;The opposition may be in position (power) also.&rdquo;
During the interaction, Banerjee invited the Sri Lankan President to the Bengal Global Business Summit to be held in Kolkata.
In a post on X, Banerjee wrote, "His Excellency The President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe saw me at the Dubai International Airport Lounge and called me to join for some discussion. I have been humbled by his greetings and invited him to the Bengal Global Business Summit 2023 in Kolkata. HE the President of Sri Lanka extended a cordial invitation to me to visit Sri Lanka. It was a pleasant interaction with deep implications."

The government gazette notofication dated July 17 was issued Monday morning. The 225-member Parliament is expected to elect the new president on July 20.
The president is empowered to impose emergency regulations part 2 of the public security ordinance which says &ldquo;(a) if the president is of the opinion that the police are inadequate to deal with a situation he may gazette an order calling out the armed forces to maintain public order&rdquo;.

On Saturday, Rajapaksa had announced to step down on Wednesday after thousands of protesters stormed his official residence, blaming him for the unprecedented economic crisis that has brought the country to its knees.
As the news of Rajapaksa's departure spread, an enthusiastic crowd gathered in Galle Face Green chanting the popular phrase Aragalayata Jayawewa, or “Victory to the struggle” in Sinhalese and "Go home Gota".
The Police fired tear gas on protesters who had gathered near the PM office. The protesters broke through a barricade despite tear gas and stormed the prime minister's office, calling for his resignation.
The protesters continue to occupy the three main buildings in the capital, the President’s House, the presidential secretariat and the prime minister’s official residence, Temple Trees, calling for their resignations.

Wickremesinghe's offer to resign came after it was decided at the all-party leaders&rsquo; meeting that the President and the Prime Minister should resign immediately.
The meeting was held at Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena's official residence.
The Leader of the Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya Sajith Premadasa did not participate in the partly leaders&rsquo; meeting as he is currently in a private hospital in Colombo due to a sudden illness.
It is said that the majority of the party leaders have requested in the meeting of the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs that the Speaker should become the Acting President and work to form an all-party government under his leadership.

Former President and Leader of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Maithripala Sirisena was also of the opinion that the President and the Prime Minister should immediately resign from their positions.
The former president in a statement through video call said his party is of the opinion that these activities should be done to preserve the peace and the Constitution.

The UNP, the oldest party in the country, had failed to win a single seat from districts, including Wickremesinghe who contested from the UNP stronghold Colombo in 2020 parliamentary polls.
He later found his way to Parliament through the sole national list allocated to the UNP on the basis of cumulative national vote. His deputy Sajith Premadasa had led the breakaway SJB and became the main Opposition.
Wickremesinghe is widely accepted as a man who could manage the economy with far-sighted policies, and is perceived as the Sri Lankan politician who could command international cooperation.
