The CBI on Thursday arrested senior Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal from his residence here for allegedly not cooperating in its probe into a cattle smuggling case, an official said.
Mondal was arrested after almost an hour-long interrogation by a CBI team that arrived at the Birbhum district president's house early on Thursday, he said.
"We have arrested him for non-cooperation in the investigation into the cattle smuggling scam," the official told PTI.
Mondal was taken to a hospital for medical check-up, he said.
The TMC leader had twice skipped his scheduled appearance before the central probe agency in the last few days, citing ill-health.

Kumar had on Tuesday pulled the plug on JD(U)'s alliance with the BJP and resigned, and followed it up by staking claim to form a new government with support of the opposition Grand Alliance.
The development appears to have swept the BJP off its feet in Bihar where it had organized its first ever joint national executive of the party's seven wings (morchas), attended by party president J P Nadda and, most importantly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, only last month.
The party had issued a press statement asserting that it was looking forward to contesting the next Lok Sabha and assembly polls under Kumar's leadership, labouring under the impression that it would be sufficient to convince the septuagenarian of the BJP's bona fide.&nbsp;

The Congress is likely to get four ministerial berths in the new government in Bihar as JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar snapped ties with the BJP and joined hands with the RJD-led alliance, PTI sources said on Tuesday.
PTI sources said Kumar spoke to both Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi soon after resigning from his post of chief minister. He is also learnt to have thanked the Congress leadership for extending support in the formation of the new government.
Besides the four ministerial berths, the Congress has also sought the post of Speaker of the state assembly, but Kumar is not keen on giving that, sources said.
The Congress has 19 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar Assembly while the JD(U) has 45, RJD 79, CPI(ML) 12, and CPI and CPI(M) each have two legislators. The BJP has 77 MLAs in Bihar while the Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) has 4. The House has one Independent MLA while one seat is vacant.
Bihar Congress president Madan Mohan Jha and the party's in-charge of Bihar affairs Bhakta Charan Das were present at the meeting of Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav and leaders of other parties.
All 19 legislators of the Congress later attended a dinner meeting at the residence of the CLP leader in the Bihar assembly in Patna.
Top Congress leadership in Delhi however, remained silent on the developments in Bihar and confabulations over the new government formation in the state.
Earlier, the Congress said it will be a part of the non-BJP alliance in Bihar to help strengthen secular forces.
The party said that like in Maharashtra where it helped stitch together the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government by supporting the Shiv Sena which was ideologically different from it, it will align with Kumar who has been with them in the past.
"Ours is an ideological battle and we are not fighting for power. The Congress will support any non-BJP government and help strengthen secular forces," Congress general secretary Tariq Anwar earlier told PTI.
"Because Nitish Kumar is leaving the BJP and coming over, we will support him," he said, adding the Congress will take whatever steps that are needed to strengthen secular forces and defeat the communal forces.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, tweeted, "In March 2020, Modi sarkar postponed COVID-19 lockdown to engineer the fall of the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh. Now, it cuts short Parliament session knowing its coalition government in Bihar is going. What goes up must come down!" A meeting of the RJD-led Grand Alliance, comprising the Left and the Congress, also took place at Rabri Devi’s house, where all the MLAs are said to have signed a letter to support Kumar.
Nitish Kumar is understood to have told JD(U) legislators and MPs, at a meeting he convened at his official residence, that he had been driven against the wall by the BJP which tried to weaken his party, first by propping up Chirag Paswan’s rebellion and later through its former national president RCP Singh.

A day after he tested positive for Covid-19, Bihar Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha said his test reports have come out negative.
His Covid-19 claim comes amid brewing political storm in Bihar, where he will play a key role in determining the legitimacy of any new formulation.
Sinha, a BJP MLA, ebulliently announced on Twitter that his test reports on Monday were negative. A day earlier, he had tested positive.
Many took to the micro-blogging site to express astonishment at the speed with which the Speaker was declared Covid negative, and the fact that the health portfolio is also held by BJP’s Mangal Pandey.
On Monday night, members of the Ethics Committee of the assembly, headed by another BJP leader Ram Narayan Mandal, met Sinha and submitted a report.
While Mandal declined to divulge details, citing confidentiality, sources in the party said the report was about an incident of March last year when opposition RJD MLAs had held the Speaker hostage inside his chair and police was called in.
The sources said the report indicts about 18 MLAs, whose names were not known.

This allows the security forces to search, arrest seize, and remove weapons and explosives, and enter and search premises or body-search persons.

Sri Lanka&rsquo;s acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday declared a state of emergency in the country with immediate effect, ahead of the election for the post of the president which fell vacant after Gotabaya Rajapaksa&rsquo;s resignation following the popular public uprising against him.
Under emergency, security forces are allowed to search, arrest seize, and remove weapons and explosives, enter and search premises, and body-search persons.&nbsp;
The government gazette notofication dated July 17 was issued Monday morning. The 225-member Parliament is expected to elect the new president on July 20.
The president is empowered to impose emergency regulations part 2 of the public security ordinance which says &ldquo;(a) if the president is of the opinion that the police are inadequate to deal with a situation he may gazette an order calling out the armed forces to maintain public order&rdquo;.

The UK prime ministerial race frontrunner, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, continues to hold on to a commanding 22-point lead over former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest, according to a new survey of Tory members on Sunday. 

With under three weeks to go before the September 2 deadline for the votes, Sunak seems to have closed the gap only slightly in recent days.&nbsp;

The UK prime ministerial race frontrunner, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, continues to hold on to a commanding 22-point lead over former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest, according to a new survey of Tory members on Sunday.
In an Opinium poll for &lsquo;The Observer&rsquo; newspaper of 570 Conservative members with a vote in the election, Truss is on 61 percent and the British Indian former minister is on 39 percent. With under three weeks to go before the September 2 deadline for postal and online votes to be cast by the membership to elect a successor to outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Sunak seems to have closed the gap only slightly in recent days.
&ldquo;From the moment we knew the final two candidates, it has been clear that Truss has had all the momentum, and our latest poll sets out just how large her lead among the party members has become,&rdquo; Chris Curtis of Opinium told the newspaper.
&ldquo;With many members having already returned their ballot papers, it is now very unlikely Truss won&rsquo;t become Prime Minister in September. It&rsquo;s clear that Sunak&rsquo;s biggest problem is trust. While some members respect his economic arguments, this hasn&rsquo;t been enough to overcome the view among members that he isn&rsquo;t honest or trustworthy enough for the top job, particularly after he called for Johnson to go,&rdquo; he said.
Opinium&rsquo;s detailed questioning also uncovers a striking lack of enthusiasm for either candidate when members are asked whether they would prefer one of them to Johnson to run the party and country. When offered the choice of Johnson still being in No. 10 Downing Street, or Truss taking over, around 63 percent of Tory members polled said they would prefer Johnson to be still in charge against 22 percent who wanted Truss. On the other side, 68 percent said they would prefer to still have Johnson than see him replaced by Sunak, who was preferred by just 19 percent.
The poll also found that almost three in 10 of the Tory electorate (29 per cent) had already voted. Some 47 percent said they would definitely be voting for the candidate they had opted for. Just 19 percent said they had yet to make up their mind.
Opinium said that while these findings meant it may still be possible for Sunak to pull off a &ldquo;stunning comeback&rdquo; to enter 10 Downing Street, but to do so he would have to win over almost all the undecideds and convert a sizeable chunk of those not fully behind Truss.
The Foreign Secretary&rsquo;s support is particularly strong among older Conservative members, while Sunak&rsquo;s is far higher among younger ones. For Sunak the most cited reason was that he would be better at managing the economy (22 percent), while 10 percent said they regarded him as the most competent or intelligent.
A main reason mentioned by people who backed Truss was dislike of Sunak (14 percent). The same proportion (14 percent) said the Cabinet minister was more honest and trustworthy, while 10 percent chose the fact that she had remained loyal to Johnson and not called on him to resign. Around 2 percent of Tory members cited race or ethnicity as a reason for supporting Truss and not Sunak.
Meanwhile, the bookie's odds also continue to be firmly in favour of a Truss win at 88 percent as opposed to 12 percent for Sunak. Both hopefuls continue to pledge new commitments if elected, with Truss saying she would take on the role of "Minister for the Union" and Sunak promising to introducing legislation to make the UK "energy independent" by 2045 at the latest, as he vowed to ensure there is no repeat of the looming winter crisis.
After voting closes on the evening of September 2, the winner between the two finalists will be declared on September 5 and he or she will take charge as Tory leader and British Prime Minister immediately.&nbsp;

After he quit the alliance with the BJP in Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar Friday has said that he has no aspirations of becoming the Opposition’s prime ministerial face.
“I say this with folded hands, I have no such thoughts…My work is to work for everyone,” he told news agency ANI. “I will make an effort to see that all the Opposition parties work together. If they do, it will be good.”
Earlier this week, the Bihar chief minister ended his party’s alliance with the BJP and was sworn in once again as CM, with RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as his deputy. Asked whether he will be acting on Yadav’s promise of creating 10 lakh jobs in the state, Nitish said: “What he has said is right. All efforts will be made for it.”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hit out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for giving a "perverse twist" to the debate on freebies, saying the AAP leader's comments are an attempt to create fears in the minds of the poor.
A day after Kejriwal joined the debate on freebies calling for a referendum on spending taxpayers' money on healthcare and education, Sitharaman said that spending on these two has never been called or classified as freebies since Independence and to drag them now into the debate is to give a perverse twist.
"Delhi Chief Minister has given perverse twist to the debate on freebies. Health and education have never been called freebies," she told reporters here.
"No Indian government has ever denied them since Independence. So, by classifying education and health as freebies, Kerjiwal is trying to bring in a sense of worry and fear in minds of poor," she said.
In recent days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hit out competitive populism of extending "rewaris" (freebies) which are not just wastage of taxpayers' money but also an economic disaster that could hamper India's drive to become Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant).
His comments were seen directed at parties like AAP which have in the run-up to assembly elections in states like Punjab promised free electricity and water, among other things.
Sitharaman said there has to be a genuine debate on the issue and everyone should participate in it.

The Marathi daily also targeted Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who revolted against the Sena leadership in June, saying he “bent the knee” before Delhi.
He (Shinde) should understand that Kumar showed he can survive without it, the editorial said.
The Sena further said the fissures between Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) founder Lalu Prasad must come to an end now.
It also praised Prasad's son Tejashwi Yadav, who led the RJD's Assembly polls campaign in 2020, describing him as a "young and popular" leader of Bihar who had posed a challenge to the then BJP-JD(U) alliance.
The RJD and JD(U) had contested against each other in the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls. The ties between Kumar and Lalu Prasad have seen several ups and downs over the last four decades.

The Sena editorial said the BJP tried to destabilise the JD(U) by backing former Union minister RCP Singh and after realising this, Kumar parted ways with the saffron party.
“Nitish Kumar has created a storm. If it intensifies into a cyclone, then it can pose a challenge to the BJP,” the Marathi publication said.
It said the repercussions of political revolutions in Bihar, the land of socialist leader Jai Prakash Narayan, are felt in the entire country and the new political realignment in the state could potentially change the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Bihar sends 40 MPs to the Lok Sabha, the fourth highest after Uttar Pradesh (80), Maharashtra (48) and West Bengal (42).
