The Rajya Sabha Chairman has accepted the merger of seven AAP MPs into the BJP, reducing Arvind Kejriwal-led party&rsquo;s strength in the Upper House. AAP has vowed to challenge the move under the anti-defection law and may approach the court.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on Monday officially accepted the seven rebel Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs joining the BJP, but AAP said it will press on for their disqualification under the anti-defection law and is prepared to move court on the issue.
With this, the strength of Arvind Kejriwal-led party in the Rajya Sabha is reduced to three from 10, while the BJP's tally has increased to 113 in the 245-member House after the Secretariat included the seven MPs in the list of BJP members.
The seven MPs, six of them from Punjab, had on Friday petitioned the Chairman of the Upper House to be treated as BJP MPs after their merger.
"Hon'ble Chairman Rajya Sabha Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan Ji has accepted the merger of 7 AAP MPs with the BJP," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on X, adding they are now members of the BJP Parliamentary Party.
The minister welcomed the seven MPs into the BJP and said they have bid goodbye to the "Tukde-Tukde INDI Alliance".
"Welcome to nation-building NDA under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and goodbye to Tukde-Tukde INDI Alliance," the minister said.
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the party was hopeful that once its letter, where objections have been raised to the merger and the MPs' disqualification has been sought under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, is examined, the Chairman "would act in favour of the Constitution and democracy by disqualifying the seven members".
"If that does not happen, we will approach the court. It is wrong to break a party in this manner," he said.
AAP had on Sunday moved the petition before the Chairman seeking the termination of membership of these seven MPs.
Singh said that their petition has not yet been considered by the Chairman.
Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Sandeep Pathak, Vikramjit Sahney, Swati Maliwal, and Rajinder Gupta are the seven MPs who have joined the BJP, dealing a major blow to AAP.
Chadha had announced on Friday that two-thirds of the AAP MPs in the Rajya Sabha have merged with the BJP, exercising the provisions of the Constitution.
On Monday, he alleged that the work environment in AAP had turned "toxic" with leaders stopped from working, and asserted that "one or two persons can be wrong, but not all seven".
In a video on social media, Chadha said; "Today, this political party is trapped in the hands of some corrupt and compromised people. They don't work for the country but for their own personal gain."
AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj hit back over the "toxic workplace" analogy, saying even when an employee decides to leave a company, he serves a notice period instead of conspiring to damage the organisation's image.
Bharadwaj said while people may leave companies, political parties are based on ideology and not merely workplace convenience.
The Congress, meanwhile, targeted both AAP and BJP on Monday, alleging that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has been working as the BJP's "B-team" to counter the Congress in states like Punjab and Gujarat, and its "mask" is now off.
The party said that the Chairman's decision is not at all surprising, and the MPs crossing over was both a "surgical strike as well as a pre-emptive action" as the ED had been targeting some of them till recently.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, said the only surprise in the decision of the chairman is that it took so long and was not formally accepted over the weekend.
"Till very recently, the BJP had serious questions on their integrity and claimed to have solid evidence on them but all that is now conveniently forgotten. The ED was raiding some of these MPs until recently but one can bet that those will also come to a stop now," he said.
"And the ED raids that may well have taken place against some others will, of course, no longer happen. It is therefore both a surgical strike and a pre-emptive action. Lotus has become Lootus," Ramesh said.
"Operation Lotus" is a term used by opposition parties to allege poaching of their legislators by the BJP.
At a press conference, senior Congress leader Ajay Maken alleged that AAP has been giving Rajya Sabha party tickets to the wealthy in exchange for money and should thus change its name to the "Arabpati Aadmiyon ki Party (party of billionaires)".
"The mask has completely come off the face of AAP and Arvind Kejriwal," he said and claimed that more AAP leaders from Delhi and Punjab will join the BJP.
"The Aam Aadmi Party is the B team of the BJP. The leaders of AAP are traitors to the country," he alleged.
BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde welcomed all seven former AAP MPs into the party fold, saying Prime Minister Modi's resolve to make India a developed country will gain &ldquo;momentum&rdquo; with their experience.
&ldquo;AAP's Seven, Now with BJP,&rdquo; Tawde, who is also a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, said in a post on X in Hindi.
&ldquo;Arvind Kejriwal's dictatorial attitude has now been fully exposed before the people of the country,&rdquo; the BJP leader said.
The Rajya Sabha website now shows that the seven MPs are part of the BJP list of members.

Barely a year after losing power to the BJP in Delhi, AAP suffered its greatest jolt on Friday with seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs including Raghav Chadha quitting the party.&nbsp;
The seven Rajya Sabha MPs to quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and who once formed the party's public and organisational face included Sandeep Pathak, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Ashok Mittal, Rajinder Gupta and Vikram Sahney besides Chadha.
Addressing a joint press conference, Chadha said nearly two-thirds of AAP's Rajya Sabha MPs had quit the party and would join the BJP as a separate faction. He said several Rajya Sabha MPs, including disgruntled party leader Maliwal and Harbhajan Singh, had also left AAP.
Chadha, who joined AAP at its inception in 2012, was among the party's founding members and helped draft the Delhi Lokpal Bill the same year. A chartered accountant by profession, he later emerged as the party's television face and became its youngest national spokesperson.
Maliwal was elected to the Rajya Sabha from AAP in 2024. Before that, she served as the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women. She became critical of the party in May 2024 after alleging that she was assaulted at the residence of then Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Sandeep Pathak, one of the MPs who quit AAP, said his academic journey began at Cambridge University before he moved to the University of Oxford and later the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He returned to India and became a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Pathak joined AAP in 2022 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha the same year. He was also appointed the party's in-charge for Gujarat and co-in-charge for Punjab.
Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh joined AAP in 2022 before entering the Rajya Sabha. He is also known for his work as a sports commentator and actor.
Ashok Mittal, founder and chancellor of Lovely Professional University, also joined AAP in 2022 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha. In 2024, he was chosen as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance.
Rajinder Gupta, a businessman and industrialist, became a Rajya Sabha MP from AAP in 2025. He was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions to trade and industry.
Vikram Sahney, also a Padma Shri awardee, joined the party in 2022. He had earlier received the International Peace Award from the President of Mauritius.
AAP lost the Delhi assembly elections held on February 5, 2025. While the BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, AAP was victorious on 22 seats. The BJP returned to power in the national capital after 26 years.

Ludhiana Police registered a case against a YouTube channel named Capital TV for allegedly spreading false news against Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha. Punjab Police said that the YouTube channel allegedly equated Raghav Chadha with fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya.&nbsp;
According to a report by the Indian Express, the FIR against the YouTube channel 'Capital TV' was filed based on a complaint by Vikas Prashar, the son of Ashok Pappi Prashar, who is the AAP candidate from the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat. This FIR addresses accusations of defamatory and &ldquo;misleading content" on the channel.
In the complaint, it was mentioned, "The statements/contents of false videos on Capital TV channel and others shall harm the public peace and harmony&hellip;and is likely to promote enmity between different groups in the country on the grounds of religion, caste, race and community..."
According to reports, the YouTube channel claimed that AAP sold election tickets.&nbsp;

In a video message, Chadha said, "The intervention by the Supreme Court led to the revocation of my suspension (from the Rajya Sabha as a member). The suspension was revoked through a motion moved in the House. I was kept suspended for 115 days, and I could not ask people's questions during the period. Today, I thank the honorable Supreme Court and the Rajya Sabha Chairman."

Chadha was on July 6, 2022 allotted a 'Type 6' bungalow at Pandara Park but he made a representation to the chairman of the Rajya Sabha on August 29 requesting for a 'Type 7' accommodation. However, in March this year, the allotment was cancelled.

A Delhi court has said that AAP's Raghav Chadha cannot claim that he has an absolute right to continue to occupy the government bungalow during his entire tenure as a Member of the Rajya Sabha even after the cancellation of allotment.
Additional District Judge Sudhanshu Kaushik made the observation while vacating an interim order passed on April 18 that had directed the Rajya Sabha Secretariat not to dispossess Chadha from the government bungalow.
Reacting to the order, Chadha said he would be taking appropriate action in law in due course.
"The trial court had initially accepted my plea and granted me interim relief. It has now returned my case on a legal technicality, which I am legally advised to state is based on an incorrect understanding of the law. I will be taking appropriate action in law in due course," he said in a statement.
In an order passed on October 5, the judge said the argument that the accommodation once made to a Member of Parliament cannot be cancelled under any circumstances during the member's entire tenure deserves to be rejected.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha has been suspended from Rajya Sabha for 'misconduct' after four MPs accused him of nominating them for a house panel without their consent.
Chadha will remain suspended till the privileges committee submits a report on the accusations.&nbsp;
Chadha claimed the allegations of forgery were &ldquo;baseless&rdquo;, adding that any member can propose the name of any other member without the written consent of the member or signature.
"I challenge the BJP to show the papers that have the forged signatures as alleged by them. The Parliamentary Bulletin on complaints against me has no mention of forgery, fake signatures," Chadha said and added that the BJP was "trying to suppress his voice".

Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha on August 10 responded to allegations that he forged signatures of some MPs while proposing their names for a Parliamentary Select Committee to study the Delhi services bill.
Addressing a press conference, Chadha said that the Rajya Sabha rulebook "does not say that for a Select Committee, the proposed Member's written consent or signature is needed".
He added, "I challenge BJP leaders to show that document. Show me that piece of paper which contains these signatures."
"The MPs who have accused me of forgery... I saw some BJP MPs from Lok Sabha making statements. I will have to approach Committee of Privileges against them to seek justice," Chadha said.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday referred the complaints of four MPs, who accused AAP MP Raghav Chadha of proposing their name in a House panel without their consent in violation of rules, to the privileges committee to examine and investigate the matter.
A Rajya Sabha bulletin said the chairman had received complaints from MPs Sasmit Patra, S Phangnon Konyak, M Thambidurai and Narhari Amin, who alleged breach of privilege by Chadha "for inter-alia including their names without their consent, in violation of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, in a motion on August 7".
Chadha had proposed the constitution of a Select Committee to consider the &lsquo;Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023&rsquo; and had included the names of the four MPs.
"On consideration of the facts, the Hon&rsquo;ble Chairman, Rajya Sabha has referred the matter under Rule 203 of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) to the Committee of Privileges for examination, investigation and report," the RS bulletin said.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) defended Chadha, insisting he had done no wrong and alleged that the government wanted to end his Rajya Sabha membership.
"Their aim is to end Raghav Chadha's membership like they did with Rahul Gandhi... we are not scared... What is the whole issue? Can any member suggest anyone's name for a Select Committee? Yes. Is there any requirement for any signature? No, Raghav Chadha has not breached any privilege," he said.
Chadha had given notice on August 4, 2023 to Rajya Sabha Secretariat about his intention to move an amendment to the &lsquo;Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023&rsquo; as passed by Lok Sabha for its reference to a Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha consisting of 19 members including the four members who later filed the complaint.
The Bill was taken up for consideration on August 7.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh on August 7 announced a probe into the complaints by MPs that their names were included in a proposed select committee of the House for the Delhi services bill without their consent.
The select committee was proposed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha in the Upper House to examine the Delhi services bill.
After the deputy chairman read out the names to be included in the proposed select committee, Home Minister Amit Shah informed that five members have complained that their names were included without their signatures in the proposal moved by the AAP leader.
He demanded that this issue be investigated. Terming it a breach of privilege of the House, Shah said the matter should be referred to the privileges committee.
"Who all have signed on their behalf is a subject of investigation," Shah said and requested the Chair to record the statements of the complainant members.
Shah also attacked the AAP alleging that the party was "committing fraud in parliamentary proceedings".
Then three members, including Sasmit Patra of the BJD, M Thambidurai of the AIADMK and S Phangnon Konyak of the BJP, stood up and informed the House that their consent was not taken for the inclusion of their names in the proposed select committee.
To this, the deputy chairman said the complaints of the MPs will be probed. He, however, did not indicate the agency for the probe and the timeframe for completing it.
Chadha's amendment to send the contentious bill to a select committee was negated by a voice vote.

AAP member in Rajya Sabha Raghav Chadha on August 7 blasted the government while speaking on Delhi Services Bill which was introduced in the upper house by Home Minister Amit Shah.
Slaming the Centre, AAP MP invoked BJP leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani and Sushman Swaraj and asserted the government should follow its leaders who once batted for Delhi's full-statehood.&nbsp;
Hitting out Union minister Amit Shah for his recent remark in the Lok Sabha, where he slammed INDIA alliance and mentioned how first PM Jawaharlal Nehru backed the bill.&nbsp;
Taking potshots at Shah, Chadha said the the minister should become &lsquo;Adavanivadi&rsquo; and not &lsquo;Nehruvadi&rsquo;.

The AAP leader and the actor did not open on their relationship until their engagement. The couple has been good friends from their university days as they studied together in the London School of Economics.

Parineeti Chopra recently got engaged to AAP leader Raghav Chadha in Delhi and now her fianc&eacute; has said in an interview that his friends tease him a less after the engagement.&nbsp;
In an interview with Quint, Raghav said &ldquo;Most certainly, my colleagues, co-workers in the party, and my seniors tease me a little less now&hellip; Earlier they used to ask me to get married, now they tease me a little less because they know I am getting married soon".&nbsp;
The AAP leader and the actor did not open up about their relationship until their engagement.
The couple were friends since their univiersity days as they both studied in London.&nbsp;
According to reports, Raghav and Parineeti will get married in December in Rajasthan&rsquo;s Udaipur. &nbsp;
