R Praggnanandhaa claimed the Tata Steel Masters 2025 title after defeating World Champion D Gukesh in a dramatic tiebreaker.

Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa emerged victorious in the Tata Steel Masters 2025, triumphing over World Champion D Gukesh in a dramatic tiebreaker in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, on February 2.&nbsp;
With this win, Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand in 2006 to secure the title. Both players finished the 14-player round-robin tournament with 8.5 points after 13 classical rounds, setting the stage for an exciting tiebreaker.

In the final round, Gukesh suffered his first defeat as World Champion, losing to Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in 31 moves.&nbsp;
Praggnanandhaa, too, was defeated by Grandmaster Vincent Keymer in an intense marathon game, but both players remained tied on points, forcing the tiebreaker.
The tiebreaker consisted of two blitz games, and Gukesh took the initial lead by winning the first game with white pieces. He only needed a draw in the second game to win the title. However, Praggnanandhaa made a remarkable recovery, winning both blitz games to secure the championship.
The situation echoed the 2013 Candidates Tournament, where both Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik lost their final games but Carlsen won the title on tiebreaks, ultimately becoming the World Champion.
Despite his loss, Praggnanandhaa proceeded to the tiebreaker against Gukesh. Meanwhile, Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov was held to a draw by P. Harikrishna, ensuring both Indian players finished at the top.
The tiebreaker was a thrilling contest of rapid-fire chess, with both players playing two blitz games, each lasting three minutes with a two-second increment. The games reached Sudden Death, and in a tense final sequence, Gukesh blundered, allowing Praggnanandhaa to seal the win.
In the Tata Steel Challengers 2025, Vietnam&rsquo;s Thai Dai Van Nguyen claimed the title. Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa&rsquo;s sister, GM R Vaishali, finished ninth, and Divya Deshmukh secured 12th place in the 14-player event.

With the 62-move win with black pieces, Praggnanandhaa became the second Indian after Anand to defeat a reigning world champion in classical chess.

After the victory late on Tuesday night, 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa has 2748.3 points as against 2748 of five-time world champion Anand in the FIDE live ratings. The world chess body publishes the ratings at the start of each month.

Praggnanandhaa had also beaten Liren at the 2023 Tata Steel tournament.
"That feels good!" Praggnanandhaa said after the win.
He is now third in the standings with 2.5 points in the Masters event.
The teenaged Indian GM has been in good form in recent times, having finished runner-up in the World Cup to Magnus Carlsen last year to qualify for the Candidates tournament to be held in April to identify the challenger to Liren.
The Masters group saw Dutch player Anish Giri emerge as the sole leader heading into the first rest day. Giri's endgame prowess secured him victory against teenaged Indian GM D Gukesh to take him to 3.5 points.
Alireza Firouzja is half a point behind the leader on 3 points.
The third Indian player in the fray, Vidit Santosh Gujrathi was held to a draw by Jorden Van Foreest in round four. He has 2 points from four rounds.
In the fifth round on Thursday, Praggnanandhaa runs into the leader Anish Giri while his compatriots Gukesh and Gujrathi will take on Ian Nepomniachtchi and Max Warmerdam respectively.

A wonderkid, who took up the sport at the age of four-and-a-half, R Praggnanandhaa has achieved several firsts in his distinguished career thus far. From qualifying for the Candidates tournament to achieving a magnificent ELO rating at just 14-years-old, the Chennai chess wiz is on the path to chart history. Hailing from the hotbed of Indian chess in Tamil Nadu, Praggnanandhaa has been making waves since a very young age. He won the national under-7 title to lay down the marker and has been on the rise ever since. At 10, he was an International Master and two years later, he became a Grandmaster. Late in 2019, he achieved a ELO rating of 2600 at 14 years and three months and looked to be on the overdrive. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 came as a speed bump. However, Praggnanandhaa shone in online tournaments and kept getting better.
In 2021, he impressed in the Meltwater Champions Tour, scoring victories over top names like Sergey Karjakin, Teimour Radjabov and drew with Carlsen.
In 2022, his stock rose further when he stunned Carlsen in the Airthings Masters rapid tournament. He became only the third Indian after Anand and P Harikrishna to win a game against the seemingly unbeatable Carlsen.
He has improved leaps and bounds and with the work put in under noted coach R B Ramesh and subsequently with Vishy Anand as his mentor, Praggnanandhaa can only get better, which may not be good news for his rivals.
At just 18-years-old, he is already on the path to greatness and remains one of India&rsquo;s biggest hopes at Asiad 2023 for a gold medal.
His performance in the FIDE World Cup has turned the spotlight firmly on him even as compatriots like D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi too keep reminding the chess world of their own potential.

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa held his own against World No.1 Magnus Carlsen as he played out draws in two classical games on August 23.
The FIDE Chess World Cup 2023 final will now be decided via tie-breaker on Thursday.
In the first game, The 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa held his own against a fancied and higher-rated opponent and forced a stalemate in 35 moves playing white pieces.
Magnus Carlsen, who revealed he had food poisoning in the lead-up to the big final, settled for a draw in the second game in Baku.
The Indian teenager became only the second player from the country to reach the final of the World Cup after the legendary Viswanathan Anand and qualified for the Candidates tournament in 2024.
However, both players agreed to a draw, pushing the game to a tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, the two players will play two games in a rapid format with a time control of 10 minutes for each player and a 10-second increment for each move.
If a winner is still not decided, two more rapid games will be played with a time control of 5 minutes and a 3-second increment of each move. If the score is still a draw, then the final will be played in a sudden-death mode in a single blitz game.

The second classical game will be played on Wednesday in which Magnus Carlsen will be starting with white.
