Chess World Cup: R Praggnanandhaa stuns world no. 3 Fabiano Caruana; to face Magnus Carlsen in final

Indian prodigy R Praggnanandhaa stunned world no. 3 Fabiano Caruana in their semifinal clash on August 21 at the ongoing chess world cup, setting up a summit clash with top-ranked Magnus Carlsen.

The 18-year-old defeated the American Grandmaster via a tiebreak after the two game classical series ended 1-1.

With his win over Caruana, Praggnanandhaa has become the third youngest player after the legendary Bobby Fischer and Carlsen to qualify for the Candidates tournament.

The top three finishers in the tournament qualify for the Candidates event in 2024 to determine the challenger to current world champion Liren of China.

The Indian Grandmaster is also the first Indian since legendary Vishwanathan Anand to enter the final of the chess world cup.

Anand won the title in 2000 and 2002.
