The central government has banned 18 OTT platforms for sharing obscene and vulgar content. These platforms violated IT Act and Indecent Representation Act, depicting nudity and explicit sexual acts. Social media accounts affiliated with the OTT platforms have also been blocked.

The Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting, operating under the central government, has taken a stringent stance against 18 Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms for disseminating 'obscene and vulgar' as well as pornographic content, despite repeated warnings.
In line with this action, 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media accounts linked to these platforms have also been barred from public access within India.
<h3>Reasons for the ban</h3>
The OTT platforms incurred the ban due to prima facie breaches of Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
The Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting elaborated on the rationale behind this prohibition, highlighting that a substantial portion of the hosted content was found to be not only obscene and vulgar but also demeaning towards women.
This content portrayed nudity and sexual acts in inappropriate contexts, such as relationships between teachers and students, and incestuous family relationships, among others.
Additionally, it included sexual innuendos and prolonged segments of pornographic and sexually explicit scenes devoid of any thematic or societal relevance.

"If there is a need to change the rules, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will not hesitate. It will take tough action to stop vulgarity and abusive language," the minister said.

Taking a tough stand on complaints against content on OTT platforms, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said vulgarity and abusive language was not acceptable in the name of creativity.
Addressing a press conference in Nagpur, Thakur said the government had taken a serious view on complaints of vulgarity and abusive language in content on OTT platforms and will not hesitate to take tough action to stop this trend.
"These platforms were given freedom for creativity and not for obscenity and when one crosses the limit, then hurling abuses in the name of creativity cannot be accepted at all," Thakur said.
"If there is a need to change the rules, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will not hesitate. It will take tough action to stop vulgarity and abusive language," the minister said.

The Covid-19 pandemic was a game-changer for the &nbsp;OTT platforms, which saw viewership skyrocketing.&nbsp; However, as the Covid situation abated, paid subscriptions for OTT platforms has plateaued.&nbsp;
According to reports by Livemint, besides penetration of OTTs among the urban elite has reached a saturation point and the platforms are yet to devise a strategy to woo the lower-end of the target audience in a significant way.&nbsp;
The churn has also increased with consumers frequently activating and deactivating subscriptions. At the peak of the covid pandemic, platforms had seen over 100% rise in subscription numbers. With most subscribers opting for annual payment plans, month-on-month growth has slowed, said Vibhu Agarwal, founder of OTT app Atrangii. Most of the OTT players have been able to gain initial traction from India&rsquo;s largest cities, where the per capita income is much higher than that in smaller cities or rural areas. Therefore, substantially increasing the paid user base could prove to be a challenge in India.&nbsp;

The comedy drama, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rakul Preet Singh, shows the hilarious struggles of Dr. Uday Gupta, who aspired to specialise in Orthopaedic, but is forced to take an all-female class of Gynaecology. This film released in theatres on October 14 and has received a positive response from the audience as well as the critics.
'Brahmastra Part One: Shiva'
The fantasy action-adventure, written and directed by Ayan Mukerji, is inspired from stories in Hindu mythology. It film follows the journey of Shiva, an orphan, who discovers that he has the power to control fire and a connection to a secret society of guardians - Brahmastra. He attempts to prevent the strongest of all astras from falling into the hands of dark forces. The film will reportedly release on Disney+ Hotstar on October 23.
'Laal Singh Chaddha'
Directed by Advait Chandan, this comedy drama stars Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles. This film is adapted from Oscar winning Hollywood film &lsquo;Forrest Gump&rsquo; starring Tom Hanks. It narrates the extraordinary journey of a simple man with a disability.
