The retail prices of onions have surged by 25-50% in the National Capital Region, with the current cost ranging from Rs 50-70 per kilogram, contingent on the quality.&nbsp;
Not in Delhi, the price of onions has witnessed a sharp increase in Visakhapatnam as well, doubling from 25 per kilogram to 50 rupees per kg. The trend appears similar to that of tomatoes, which surged to 150 per kg a few months ago.&nbsp;
This price hike coincided with the culmination of the 10-day Navratra festival, culminating in Dussehra celebrations.
According to a Businessline report, Kapil Tyagi, the owner of a daily needs shop in a residential society in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, noted the price increase, stating that just three days ago, the cost was Rs 40 per kilogram, but now it stands at Rs 50 per kilogram. Similar price increases have been observed in local markets and Mother Dairy's Safal outlets.

In Noida's retail market, inferior quality onions are being sold for Rs 50 per kilogram, medium-quality for Rs 60 per kilogram, and superior quality for Rs 70 per kilogram. Meanwhile, Mother Dairy raised the rate to Rs 56 per kilogram in Noida, up from Rs 49 per kilogram on Tuesday, Rs 45 per kilogram on October 20, and Rs 42 per kilogram prior to the Navratri festival.
The report further says an onion expert, R. K. Gupta, highlighted that the onion prices were around Rs 40 per kilogram before Navratri and have now reached Rs 60 per kilogram in the National Capital Region. While prices surged in Maharashtra's producing region due to a 36% decrease in sowing area, subdued demand during Navratri has prevented even higher price increases. It is expected that the late-kharif crop, arriving from the last week of November, will help boost availability.

Traders in the Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market, Nepal's largest wholesale agricultural market, reported a sudden scarcity of onions. The situation has been exacerbated as no onion shipments have been received since the weekend, and existing stocks were depleted by Monday. Prices have surged from Rs 54 per kg to over Rs 100 per kg in the Kathmandu Valley.
Given Nepal's dependence on Indian onions, the export duty has caused domestic shortages. This scarcity is especially challenging during Nepal's festive season, characterized by heightened onion consumption for local cuisine. The absence of weekend deliveries from India and the additional 40% tax on upcoming shipments have contributed to the crisis. Consequently, the wholesale price of onions surged to Rs 78 per kg at the Kalimati market.

Traders have decided to close onion auctions indefinitely in all the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) in Maharashtra's Nashik district to protest against the Centre&rsquo;s decision to impose a 40 per cent duty on the export of the kitchen staple.
In view of the decision, the onion auctions remained closed at most of the APMCs in the district on Monday, including at Lasalgaon, the largest wholesale onion market in India, sources said.

Traders claimed the central government's decision to impose 40 per cent duty on the export of onions till December 31, 2023 will adversely affect the onion growers and its export.
The decision for the indefinite closure of onion auctions here was taken on Sunday in a meeting of the Nashik District Onion Traders Association, its president Khandu Deore said on Monday.
"In case onions are brought to an APMC, as the decision will take time to reach farmers, then the auction of those onions will be conducted and thereafter the process will remain closed indefinitely. This was also decided in the meeting, as per the request by various organisations of farmers,&rdquo; he said.
At some places, onions were brought and their auction began at the APMCs, as per sources.
Sanjay Pingle, onion-potato market president at the Vashi APMC in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, urged the Centre to rethink over its decision of imposing 40 per cent duty on the export of onions.
Talking to PTI, Pingle claimed the government's decision will adversely affect the onion growers in the state.
"We are also under a lot of pressure from farmers asking us to shut down the market and stop the sale of onions. At least 10-15 associations have asked us not to sell the onions. The entire Nashik district is observing a closure (of onion auction) today. In the coming days, local markets will also close. The APMC has also decided to support the farmers," he said.
"If we pay 40 per cent duty to the government, then the rate of the onion which we were exporting for Rs 25 (per kg) will drop down to Rs 15. At this rate, we will be forced to purchase onion at Rs 10, which will not even cover a farmer's production cost," Pingle said.
He claimed some agency has given a "wrong report" to the central government (over the issue), and not taken into consideration the rise in expenditure on fertilisers, labour cost, etc on the production of onions.
"Even today, there is a balance of 80 per cent onion stock in Maharashtra and 70 per cent in Madhya Pradesh," he further claimed, adding that due to less rainfall, there has been a good production of onions in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
If 10 years back the price of onion was Rs 10 (per kg) and now after considering the production cost it it Rs 17-18, there is not much increase. It is about Rs 25-30 in the wholesale market and Rs 35-40 in retail, he said.
Pingle urged the government to provide onion through the public distribution system (PDS), as is being done for rice and wheat.
"If you want that the poor people get onion at a cheaper rate, then sell it through PDS at Rs 2 to Rs 10 (per kg)," he said.
He also claimed that due to the Centre's decision, the export of onion will drop drastically and facilitate more income for farmers in Pakistan, Iran and Egypt.
Pingle also urged that Union minister Nitin Gadkari take up this issue with the Centre.
He said in the coming days, they will take a decision on this issue as "we want to be with the farmers".
The Centre should call a meeting of the stakeholders and then only implement this decision, he said.

The Department of Consumer Affairs said it has decided to release the onion stocks by targeting key markets in states or regions where retail prices are ruling above the all-India average and also where the rates of increase in prices over the previous month and year are above the threshold level. The buffer stock amounting to 3 lakh metric tonnes was built under the Price Stabilisation Fund, reflecting the government's commitment to curbing price fluctuations and maintaining market stability.&nbsp; Onion prices Onion prices jumped from Rs 1,200 per quintal on August 5 to Rs 1,900 on August 7. They stood at Rs 2,500 a quintal on August 9 in key markets, according to reports. The retail prices of onions are around Rs 30 a kilo, which are expected to touch Rs 60-70 a kilo by early September due to a lower sowing area during the rabi season.

However, Piyush Goyal, the Union's food minister, stated in April that the central government would keep a buffer supply of 3 lakh tonnes of onions for the 2023&ndash;2024 growing season. The government had a buffer reserve of 2.51 lakh tonnes of onions in 2022&ndash;2023.
The buffer stock is kept on hand in case of emergencies and to stabilise prices if rates rise noticeably during a period of low supply.
65% of India's onion production that is harvested during the Rabi season, which runs from April to June, satisfies consumer demand until the Kharif crop is harvested in October or November.
This came after persistent rains across the nation had a negative impact on tomato prices. Due to the limited supply brought on by crop damage from heavy rain and intense heat, tomato prices have increased from ₹10-₹20 per kilogram to ₹80-₹100 per kilogram.

Maharashtra farmer sets onion crop on fire in protest against govt as prices tumble

Distressed by the crash in prices of onions, a farmer in Nashik district of Maharashtra lit a bonfire of the crop in protest against the government's policies and to highlight the plight of growers.
The protest was held on the day of the Holika festival which is marked by the burning of bonfires in Maharashtra.
Onion cultivators are battling a crisis as the prices of the kitchen staple have taken a hit at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Lasalgaon, the largest wholesale onion market in Asia, in Nashik.
The price per kilogram of onion came down to Rs 2 to Rs 4, which angered the growers, who had stopped the auction at the APMC last week for a day.
Krishna Dongre, a farmer from Mathulthan village in Yeola taluka who burnt the onion crop cultivated on one-and-half acres of land, had printed an invitation card announcing the agitation which had gone viral on social media.
"The Union and state governments have left the farmers to their fate. In their power struggle, they do not pay attention to whether the farmer survives or dies. This is a black day not only for Maharashtra but also for the nation as a farmer has been forced to light the bonfire of onions," he said and blamed the policies of the government.
Farmers from nearby villages were present at the protest.

At the beginning of the month, onion was available between Rs 15 to Rs 25 per kg in the retail market. Ahead of the festival, the rise in onion price will dampen the mood to some extent as the commodity is one of the important ingredients in the kitchen. According to the APMC (Agriculture Produce Market Committee) administration, the old stocks of onion are getting over and the present supply is from old stocks, not from farmers. However, the price will stabilize only after the Rabi crops start arriving by January-February next year.
