India to the rescue as Pakistan sees vegetable, fruit prices skyrocket amid severe floods?

The Pakistan government may have to import tomatoes and onions from India with severe floods causing fruit and vegetable prices to skyrocket.

Tomatoes were being sold at Rs 500 per kg, and onions at Rs 400 per kg at markets in Lahore, according to dealers quoted by news agency PTI. Potato prices have risen from Rs 40 per kg to Rs 120 per kg.

Prices are expected to rise further in coming days as vegetable supply from Balochistan, Sindh, and south Punjab is affected by the floods.

Pakistan might import tomatoes and onions from India via the Attari-Wagah border crossing. Currently, major cities in Punjab are getting the food staples from Afghanistan via the Torkham border.

Severe floods have killed over 1,000 people in Pakistan so far.
