Injured skipper Ben Stokes and lead pacer Jofra Archer will not be part of the fifth and final Test against India, starting at The Oval from Thursday, as England made three changes to their playing XI for the series-deciding game.
The hosts lead the series 2-1 after four intensely fought Test matches that has also had its fair share of controversies.
Ollie Pope will lead the side in Stokes' absence.
Stokes, who has led the team from the front and has claimed 17 wickets while scoring some vital runs with bat, will miss out on the game at The Oval due to a shoulder injury, while Archer has been rested after having made his return to Test cricket following a long gap of four years.
Pacer Brydon Carse will also miss the final Test, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a press release on Wednesday.
"Captain Ben Stokes is unavailable due to a right shoulder injury. Also missing out are spinner Liam Dawson and pace bowlers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse.
"England have included Jacob Bethell, who will bat at No.6. Surrey bowlers Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton come into the side, along with Nottinghamshire quick Josh Tongue," the ECB said.

His away series against India last year had started with a bang and ended in a whimper but Ollie Pope has consciously tried to not let discussions about his slot in the playing eleven affect him too much while constructing a stylish century during England's solid first innings reply on the second day of opening Test.
Vice-captain Pope, whose place in the team has been under scanner since his technique got exposed by Jasprit Bumrah and Indian spinners in the 2024 away series, scored a fine 106 in England's first innings score of 465.
For the record, Pope had started with 196 in Hyderabad and then in remaining four Tests, totalled 40 runs.
"I've tried not to let it affect me too much," Pope said at post day press conference on Sunday.
"I've just been trying to make sure my game's in as good a place as possible and when I get in, try to make sure I make the most of it. I've tried to let the outside noise do its thing and make sure my game keeps improving, and that I get my headspace in as good a place as possible too." Pope has tried to bring about a change in his mindset wherein he doesn't feel too hard pressed to reach his first 30 runs and then feel set.
"It's almost just trying my game a little bit more: not feeling like I've got to rush to 30 to then really feel 'in'. It's trying to enjoy the process of building an innings, rather than just, 'I want to get to 30 to then make a big one'...
"It's something I've been working hard on, just generally putting my game in a better place and making sure my defence is as good as it can be." However, the graceful right hander agreed that there is still a long way to go in the marathon five-Test series.
"It's a long series, and there's a lot to be done in this game still as well," he added.
"It's definitely (an innings) that I really enjoyed. It was disappointing not to kick on this morning, but I'm really happy with how I went about it and played, and I'm happy with where my game's at - so hopefully, I can kick on."

England would not mind a rank turner in the fourth Test because assistance to spinners from the word go will make it a level-playing field, vice-captain Ollie Pope said on Wednesday.
The Tests in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajkot all had sporting pitches, that were not predominantly spin-friendly and had something for everyone.
"If it does spin from ball one, it takes the toss out of the equation, then it's an even playing field," Pope told reporters here.
"A lot of the time the wicket starts out flat and then deteriorates. We won the first game batting first, India the last two batting first. It doesn't define the result if you bat first on a slightly flatter wicket but it does give you an advantage," he added.
Pope, one of the heroes for England in Hyderabad, feels that a wicket offering good turn will provide them with wicket-taking options.
"If it does do a fair bit like we expect it to then it gets us into the game. We have got some young spinners, they have bowled well on some pretty good surfaces. It give us wicket-taking opportunities. They have done a good job on flat wickets as well." Pope had used the sweep shot to blunt the effectiveness of Indian spinners to score a majestic 196 and fashion England's victory in the series-opener.
"Personally, when the ball is doing more your best batter is trying to hit the bowler, trying to get him to bowl off his length. It helps if you try to put pressure on the bowler like we did in Hyderabad.
"If it's spinning we will see more sweep shots, innovative shots. We have realised the threats that they pose on spinning wickets, the likes of Jadeja, Ashwin and Kuldeep.
"Our best bet is to put them under pressure like we did in Hyderabad in the second innings. That can give us a large amount of confidence going to the test if it does end spinning a lot like it did then." With India resting Jasprit Bumrah, Pope feels the hosts can opt to field a fourth spinner in Axar Patel.
"Potentially (India will bring a fourth spinner), we got to see what they do once they see the wicket and train this afternoon. See what they want from the pitch, if they want some grass left.
"They have watered the pitch so potentially an extra spinner could be seen from India. With Jasprit missing they might go down that avenue, Axar Patel is definitely an option for them." Talking about the pitch, he said it looks "platey" "The pitch looks interesting, very &lsquo;platey&rsquo;. The cracks in the wicket aren&rsquo;t just cracks, there are separate bits of ground that could open up with a lot of sun on them. The ball could deviate more off them if they open up like we expect them to."
Stokes can bowl in Ranchi
 Initially, he had said that he won't be rolling over his arm in this series but England skipper Ben Stokes, who hasn't bowled since June 2023, has hinted at resuming his all-rounder duties after the colossal 434-run loss in the Rajkot Test.
The fast-bowling all-rounder was seen bowling during the training session here on Wednesday.

Earlier, Pope's brilliant 196 took England to 420 in their second innings, and gave them a substantial lead and genuine hopes of stretching India. And England did way more than stretching the hosts.
In fact, this defeat will leave a deep burn in Indian hearts as they stumbled against a 25-year-old rookie Lancastrian with a combined experience of three international matches on a pitch that did not hide any demons.
There was appreciable turn and variable bounce but nothing this set of Indian batters could not have negated. Three dismissals showcased the travails of Indians on the day &ndash; Shubman Gill (0), Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and Shreyas Iyer (13) fell to their own ineptitudes.
Jaiswal made a half-hearted charge against Hartley and the spinner pulled back his length after spotting movement of the batter. All the left-hander could manage was to spoon a catch to Pope at silly point.
Gill followed the suit two balls later in the same over. He made a hard-handed, indecisive push at the ball after Hartley tossed one around the off-stump. Pope did the rest at silly point.
Jack Leach, who is still not 100 per cent after taking a blow on his knee while fielding, dealt another telling blow to India&rsquo;s aspirations.
He produced a rather regulation ball that went across the right-hander from around the stumps, and Shreyas just poked the ball to Joe Root at first slip. It was just a nothing dismissal that encapsulated India&rsquo;s turmoil on the day.
India could have felt a greater pinch with Iyer's dismissal as he is one of the better-equipped batter in this batting unit to negate spin.
In-form KL Rahul (22) looked all set for another impact innings, but Root pinned him on the back-foot as the batter attempted a whip on the on-side.
Rahul went upstairs after the on-field umpire gave him leg before, but the TV umpire too concurred with his distant colleague&rsquo;s decision.
Ravindra Jadeja challenged Ben Stokes for a quick single and the England captain found his target with a direct throw, catching the batter well short of the crease.
But the sight of him walking back with a clutched hamstring might just offer a tad concern to the Indian camp.
Skipper Rohit Sharma looked in good space but Hartley&rsquo;s guile had him stationed in front of the wicket when the ball thudded on to his pads.
After losing three wickets in the post-lunch session, India slipped further in the final passage losing wickets in a cluster before Ravichandran Ashwin (28) and KS Bharat (28) stemmed the slide for a while with a 58-run alliance for the eighth wicket.
Their assiduousness was a marker for some of their top-order teammates but it remained just that. A gloomy pointer.
But for getting into a position from where they can dictate the course of the match, England, resuming from 321 for six, should be indebted to Pope, who ballooned his overnight 148 to 196.
England&rsquo;s lead was a good 126 when play ended on Saturday, but they needed more to give a fight to India. Pope did that in the company of equally resolute Rehan Ahmed (28) and Hartley (34).
With Ahmed, Pope added 64 runs for the seventh wicket and then made 80 off 106 balls with Hartley on his side for the eighth wicket.
However, Bumrah brought India the first breakthrough of the morning session when he had Ahmed caught behind.
Ashwin's shooter ended the burgeoning Pope-Hartley alliance as the off-spinner sneaked a low-flying ball past the latter&rsquo;s bat to bowl him.
Pope was the last man to depart. Fittingly, Bumrah, the best of Indian bowlers, ended his stay with a slower ball that dishevelled the stumps as Pope tried a reverse scoop.
However, by then, he had also reversed the course of the Test match by then. Irrevocably.

It was quite remarkable how Pope, who generally resembles a cat on a hot tin roof in these conditions, mustered fortitude and technical perfection to defy the Indian bowlers, who were primed to finish the match on day three itself, reducing England to 163 for five.
But Pope and Ben Foakes (34) milked 104 runs for the sixth wicket alliance to keep India at bay, stretching the match into the fourth day.
It wasn&rsquo;t that Pope had complete command in the middle as spinners on occasions beat him for turn and pacers deceived him outside the off-stump.
There was even a reprieve for him on 110 when Axar Patel grassed a fairly straight chance at backward square leg off Ravindra Jadeja when the batter attempted a reverse sweep.
But the 26-year-old Essex man found a way to push those distractions away from his thoughts to build on individual and the team&rsquo;s score.
Pope, whose main source of runs were sweeps and reverse sweeps, duly completed his first Test hundred, fifth in his career, against India off 154 balls, leading England&rsquo;s recovery act.
It was a massive effort from a batter who had just 384 runs from nine Tests against India at an average of 24 with a highest of 81 before this innings.
However, credit should also be given to Foakes for playing a mature hand to support Pope in his venture.
The wicketkeeper-batter is one of better players in this England line-up against spin, as he can read the tweakers off their hands and off the pitch.
The Surrey batter who averages 40 in Asia in Tests, put all those abilities into use here to battle Indian spinners for 108 minutes across two sessions as England fought tooth and nail to stay alive in the Test.
The Indian bowlers too looked clueless in the face of this unexpected confrontation from their rivals.
However, the burgeoning stand came to a close when left-arm spinner Axar Patel managed to slip a low grubber past Foakes&rsquo; defence to rattle his woodwork.
But before that fight, England resembled a rudderless ship in a storm against a set of brilliant Indian bowlers.
Pacer Jasprit Bumrah found some relevance for himself amidst the dominance of spinners to jettison Joe Root and Ben Duckett to inflict early jolts.
Bumrah managed to sneak an in-ducker past Ben Duckett (47, 52 balls) from the length as the batter was culpable of playing around the ball, while another incoming delivery that kept low gave little chance to Joe Root (2) while hitting his knee rolls.
Soon, the old firm of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja joined the party. Jadeja was the first to get into the act in the post-lunch session, getting rid of Jonny Bairstow (10).
Bairstow negated a ball that turned away from him quite solidly, but the next one from Jadeja went straight and his decision to shoulder arms had a fatal effect on his stint in the middle.
But there was more magic in store as Ashwin got the number of England captain Ben Stokes for the 12th time in Test cricket.
After getting tied down by three maidens in a row by the off-spinner, the left-hander tried to release the pressure going for a forward press but the ball spun past his bat to rattle the stumps.
Stokes&rsquo; bewildered face spoke volumes about Ashwin&rsquo;s mastery over his craft, especially angles.
Before their bowlers made some early inroads into the England line-up, India had a mildly disappointing 54 minutes in the morning session after resuming from overnight 421/7.
Jadeja could not bring up a much-anticipated 4th Test hundred, falling leg before to Root.
The left-hander went to front foot to defend a length delivery on off-stump, and the ball took a good amount of turn to hit his pads. Umpire Chris Gaffaney raised his finger as Jadeja opted to review the call.
The ball seemed to have taken a deflection off his bat but the replays remained inconclusive and the third umpire went with the on-field umpire's decision to give the batter out leg before.
In the very next ball, Root castled Bumrah and Ahmed cleaned up Axar as Indian innings came to a quick end, losing their last three wickets without adding any runs.
But as it turned out, it was just a damp start to an exceptional day of cricket.
