The New Delhi World Book Fair 2025 saw a record footfall of over two million visitors, highlighting India&rsquo;s growing love for the written word, believe organisers as well as writers and readers who attended the nine-day-long annual literary gala. There was plenty of jostling and elbowing as book enthusiasts flocked to Bharat Mandapam, the venue for NDWBF 2025 from February 1-9, to catch a glimpse of the authors they admire or to hunt for their next favourite page-turner.
Featuring over 2,000 publishers and exhibitors, including the giants in Hindi and English publications such as Penguin Random House, Harper Collins, Bloomsbury, Raj Kamal Prakashan, and Vani Prakashan, the event pulled out all the stops to make the event a haven for book lovers.
&ldquo;Republic@75&rdquo;, the theme this year, served as a platform for the event to explore the country&rsquo;s cultural heritage and its aspirations for the future. It proved to be a hit among the readers &mdash; young and old alike.
&ldquo;The NDWBF started in 1972, and from that year, the ever-increasing response from the people of Delhi is what we expected, and we are getting it as well. This time, the footfall was excellent, extraordinary, and my prediction is&mdash;though the exact official numbers are yet to be released&mdash;that we will cross 25 lakh. This is great. The footfalls have increased by almost 20 per cent compared to last year.
&ldquo;This only shows that the reading habit in India is not declining at all. In fact, it is increasing, and the publication market is also growing at an 18 per cent rate.&rdquo; National Book Trust (NBT) chairman prof. Milind Sudhakar Marathe told PTI.
With people from all walks of life attending the much-loved fair&rsquo;s 32nd edition, publishing houses noted that the literary choices of buyers was a diverse mix, with everything from fiction and non-fiction to self-help, sci-fi, and children&rsquo;s books finding their audience.
For instance, Penguin Random House India (PRHI) witnessed a major bump in the sales figures of its fiction works from previous years along with a spike in demand for books by Indian authors such as Akshat Gupta&rsquo;s &ldquo;The Hidden Hindu&rdquo; and &ldquo;The Naga Warriors&rdquo;, Nona Uppal&rsquo;s &ldquo;Fool Me Twice&rdquo; or Srishti Chaudhary&rsquo;s &ldquo;Lallan Sweets&rdquo;.
&ldquo;It is a mixed bag. People are buying everything that we have offered them. But if I have to pick up things that are moving better than another, fiction, of course, is a lot better than I had seen in the past. Apart from fiction, I see a lot of self-help, personal development and better me (books), trending&hellip; I have also witnessed a lot more in take of Indian writings this time,&rdquo; said Manoj Satti, senior vice-president (sales &amp; products and division head) at PRHI.
Bloomsbury India&rsquo;s Meenakshi Singh said she can&rsquo;t put a finger on one particular genre as avid readers bought everything from fiction to non-fiction and all sorts of genres in between.
That said, she listed bestsellers from non-fiction &ndash;William Dalrymple&rsquo;s &ldquo;The Golden Road&rdquo;, Shiv Khera&rsquo;s &ldquo;Live While You&rsquo;re Alive&rdquo;, and Dr Shiv Sarin&rsquo;s &ldquo;Own Your Body&rdquo; .
The publishing house&rsquo;s all time favourite Harry Potter series, with a host of attractive box-sets and enticing discounts, was a hot-seller this year too.
&ldquo;Box sets, in general, are doing quite well. Be it MinaLima edition box set of Harry Potter novels or Sarah J Maas box-set. I have lost count of the number of people I met at the book fair who were busy collecting each and every edition of Harry Potter novels that we have published,&rdquo; added Singh, head of marketing and publicity at Bloomsbury India.
The fair, like previous years, also featured a notable participation of authors, speakers, and books from 50 countries and international languages in the famed International Pavilion.
For example, Russia, which was designated as the focus nation, showcased an impressive collection of 1,000 books through its &ldquo;Books from Russia&rdquo; initiative.
Amish, who was among the celebrated speakers at the festival on its concluding day, was impressed by the number of people who have turned up for the event. He called the NDWBF a &ldquo;national treasure&rdquo; for its work towards encouraging reading habits.
&ldquo;What&rsquo;s beautiful about India is that while in many other parts of the world the reading habit is actually going down &mdash; not just books, but newspapers, many of them are actually dying. In India, there is a massive revival. That&rsquo;s fantastic to see,&rdquo; said the author of the bestselling &lsquo;Shiva Trilogy&rsquo; and the &lsquo;Ram Chandra Series&rsquo;.
Besides selling books, the literary event also hosted several insightful talks under the multiple literature festivals, including &lsquo;Brahmaputra Literature Festival&rsquo;, &lsquo;Prabhat Prakashan&rsquo;, &lsquo;Bharat Literature Festival&rsquo;, &lsquo;Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival&rsquo;, &lsquo;Penguin Dialogues&rsquo; and the &lsquo;Great Indian Book Tour&rsquo;, that were held as part of the fair.
There was plenty for the readers who didn&rsquo;t want to splurge a huge amount on books. Asma, a visitor and many like her, sifted through stacks of books to find their favourite in the remaindered books section.
&ldquo;I have always liked reading, and the book fair is the best place to find books that are cheap. So, first, we went to Hall 5 and entered Penguin and other shops, where each book was priced at Rs 699 and similar rates. Then, we went to second-hand book stalls, and although it was time-consuming and crowded, we managed to get a bag full of books,&rdquo; said the college student, proudly flaunting the rare edition of James Joyce&rsquo;s 1916 classic &ldquo;A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man&rdquo;.
The fair, which came to a close on Sunday, had free entry for all on the last weekend.&nbsp;

Expressing optimism about AAP&rsquo;s prospects, party MP Sandeep Pathak stated, "The question is not only about this seat but there is a very good atmosphere in favour of AAP in the whole of Delhi... the public is fully aware that if BJP comes, all the good work being done here will be stopped."
The Delhi Assembly polls will be conducted in a single phase, with results to be announced on February 8. The AAP has declared candidates for all 70 seats, while the BJP has finalized candidates for 59 constituencies. The nomination process will close on January 17, followed by scrutiny on January 18, and the final date for withdrawal of candidature is January 20.
The Congress, once dominant in Delhi politics with a 15-year reign, has faced significant setbacks in the last two assembly elections, failing to secure a single seat. AAP, on the other hand, has maintained a stronghold, winning 62 out of 70 seats in 2020, while the BJP managed only eight seats.

Quashing BJP leaders' claims that he would contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections from a second seat out of fear of losing from New Delhi, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said he will contest the polls from one seat only.
Kejriwal also asserted that the Assembly polls are not an INDA bloc affair as there is a direct contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi.
A three-time sitting MLA from New Delhi since 2013, Kejriwal this time is locked in an intense triangular contest against the sons of two former chief ministers of Delhi.
While the BJP has fielded former chief minister Sahib Singh Verma's son Parvesh Verma, Congress has given ticket to Sandeep Dikshit whose mother Sheila Dikshit was a three-term chief minister of Delhi.
"I am contesting one seat only," Kejriwal said at a press conference when asked about BJP's claims that he was going to fight from a second seat out of fear of losing from New Delhi.
The AAP leader's clarification came after BJP's IT cell chief Amit Malviya claimed in a post on X that fearing his imminent defeat from New Delhi, Kejriwal is making "baseless allegations" about voter list in his constituency and "talking" about contesting from two seats.
The AAP leaders have accused the BJP of filing applications in bulk from different constituencies, including New Delhi, for the deletion of thousands of AAP supporters' names from the electoral roll.
At the presser, Kejriwal said a meeting of AAP leaders with officials of the Election Commission is due Thursday evening, in which all the issues, including deletion of voters' names, will be discussed.
The AAP supremo also thanked INDIA bloc members, including the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), for extending support to AAP for the Assembly elections.
The Congress, which leads the anti-BJP INDIA bloc, is going solo in the Delhi polls and has so far announced names of 48 candidates.
The 70-member Delhi Assembly will go to polls on February 5. The results will be out on February 8.

Plumes of thick and black smoke was seen coming out the Carnival Resort in West Delhi's Alipur area on Friday.

Massive flames erupted from a banquet in Delhi on Friday afternoon as fire trucks were seen gushing water on the blazing building. Visuals from the scene show a Bharat Petroleum station near the Carnival Resort in New Delhi's Alipur.
Plumes of thick black smoke was seen coming out of the building and going over a busy West Delhi road. The reason behind the fire remains unclear.
A call was received at 1.55 pm and 13 fire tenders have been pressed into service, an official from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said.
So far, there are no reports of anyone injured in the incident, the official said, adding that efforts are on to douse the fire.&nbsp;

Determined to stop farmers' march from entering the national capital, authorities in Delhi on Monday fortified the border points and banned large gatherings to avoid a breach of the law and order situation.
Besides massive deployment of police and paramilitary personnel equipped with anti-riot gears, multiple layers of barricades, concrete blocks, iron nails and walls of containers have been put up at three border points - Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur.
Makeshift jails have also been set up at "specific locations" in view of farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march on Tuesday, an official said.
The Delhi Police is also using drones to keep a tight vigil, the official said, adding that they are fully prepared to deal with any situation.
As traffic restrictions and security measures came into force, the motorists had a hard time commuting between Delhi and NCR towns.
More than 200 farmers&rsquo; unions are scheduled to march to the national capital on February 13 to press the Centre for accepting their demands, including enactment of a law to guarantee a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
The Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 for a month, banning the assembly of five or more people, processions or rallies and entry of tractor trolleys carrying people in the city in view of intended widespread tension and "social unrest" due to the farmers' protest march.
The order issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora came into effect on Monday and will be in place till March 12.
It stated that as far as congregation and procession relating to weddings, funerals and other religious functions is concerned, prior permission is required from authority concerned.
During their protest in 2020, farmers from different states, mainly Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, had staged sit-in at the three border points.
Riding tractors and other vehicles, the farmers had sat at the three border points from August 2020 to December 2021.
In 2020, the police had to rush the logistics to check the entry of the farmers moving in procession of tractors.
A senior Delhi Police officer said that learning from past experience, tight security arrangements have been made this time. The police have also sealed rural roads bordering Haryana to stop the protesters from moving ahead to enter Delhi.
Apart from putting up multi-layered barricades, the Delhi Police has issued directions to its ground staff to keep a tab on the situation from the midnight of Monday and Tuesday.
The DCPs of east, outer and outer-north have been asked to brief seniors about developments happening every hour on February 13.
A senior police officer told PTI that barricades have been installed in such a way that this time the farmers would not be able to remove them easily. The cement boulders and roads have been jammed with the concrete.
The officer said unlike last time, the police will restrict entry from the narrow lanes alongside these three borders, once the farmers arrive.
The police of different districts have conducted multiple anti-riot mock drill exercises to use tear gas shells and water cannons in case the protesters manage to break the barricades.
At Tikri and Singhu borders, local residents and shopkeepers fear losses due to farmers' protest.

Delhi's air quality has deteriorated further and now stands closer to the "severe plus" category, a stage which might trigger the implementation of the odd-even car rationing measure in the capital.
The city's air quality index stood at 437 at 7 am, worsening from 419 at 4 pm on Thursday.
The capital's 24-hour average AQI, recorded at 4 pm every day, was 401 on Wednesday, 397 on Tuesday, 358 on Monday, 218 on Sunday, 220 on Saturday, and 279 on Friday.
The relatively better air quality last weekend is attributed to rain. Air pollution levels surged in the following days due to intense firecracker bursting on Diwali night and a resurgence in stubble burning in the neighbouring states.
These effects were compounded by unfavourable meteorological conditions, primarily calm winds and low temperatures, hindering the dispersion of pollutants. Neighbouring Ghaziabad (374), Gurugram (404), Greater Noida (313), Noida (366), and Faridabad (415) also recorded very poor to severe air quality.
An AQI between zero and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, 401 and 450 severe and above 450 severe plus.
Earlier this week, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai had mentioned the possibility of the return of the odd-even car rationing measure if the AQI crosses the 450-mark.
The measure, implemented four times since 2016, allows cars to operate on alternate days based on the odd or even last digit of their registration numbers. The last enforcement was in 2019.
The government last week postponed its implementation after a notable improvement in the city's air quality due to rain on Friday.
Recent findings from a joint project by the Delhi government and IIT-Kanpur found that vehicular emissions accounted for about 38 per cent of the capital's air pollution on Wednesday. This was reduced to 25 per cent on Thursday.
Secondary inorganic aerosols -- particles such as sulfate and nitrate that are formed in the atmosphere due to the interaction of gases and particulate pollutants from sources like power plants, refineries, and vehicles -- is the second major contributor to Delhi's foul air, accounting for 30 to 35 per cent of the air pollution in the city the last few days.
Calm winds and low temperatures are allowing accumulation of pollutants and relief is unlikely over the next few days, an official at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
An improvement in the wind speed from November 21 onwards might bring air pollution levels down, he said.
Delhi's air quality dropped over the last few days despite the state government implementing stringent measures, including a ban on construction work and the entry of diesel-guzzling trucks into the city.
According to IQAir, a Swiss company that specialises in air quality monitoring, Delhi was the most polluted city in the world on Thursday, followed by Baghdad and Lahore.
A system developed by the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology to identify the contribution of different pollution sources showed stubble-burning accounted for 7.5 per cent of the air pollution in the capital on Thursday. It is likely to come down to 3.5 per cent on Friday and 3 per cent on Saturday.
An official of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had earlier said stringent measures, including a ban on construction work and the entry of polluting trucks in the national capital, under the final stage of the central government's air pollution control plan called the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) will continue until further orders.
The Delhi government on Thursday set up a six-member special task force to ensure strict implementation of measures outlined in the GRAP in the capital. Delhi's special secretary (environment) will head the STF, whose members include senior officials from the departments of transport, traffic, revenue, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Public Works Department.

In an upsetting incident, the bodies of two missing children were found inside a wooden box in Delhi.
The incident occurred in Jamia Nagar on June 6, 2023. The children had gone missing at around 3:30 pm on the same day, as per a Times of India report.
After a search was launched by the parents and others, the children's bodies were found inside a box in their house.
Delhi Police reportedly said that no injury was found on the bodies, and it might be a case of accidental asphyxia.

Police said that the bomb threat email was sent to Delhi Public School, Mathura Road by a 16-year-old student.
The teenager reportedly admitted to the "prank" during a counselling session. He said he did it for fun after getting the idea from a similar incident at The Indian School in Delhi's Sadiq Nagar just days earlier.
DPS Mathura Road had been evacuated and searched on April 26, 2023, following the email, but nothing suspicious was found.

The suspects, identified as Nazim and Harafat, were later caught by police, reports said on April 28.

Urination incident: Air India closes internal probe, to assist pilot in appeal against license suspension

In a statement, the airline said it accepts that, notwithstanding the mitigating circumstances, based on the letter of the CAR (Civil Aviation Requirement) it did not correctly classify the incident and therefore did not report it as required.

Nearly two months after the urination incident on its New York-New Delhi flight, Air India on Tuesday said it has closed the internal probe into the case and will assist the flight's pilot-in-command with an appeal against the suspension of his license by DGCA as the airline deems the action as "excessive".
Last week, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended the license of the pilot for three months, imposed a penalty of Rs 30 lakh on Air India and Rs 3 lakh on the director of the airline's in-flight services related to the urination incident that happened on November 26, 2022.
Tata group-owned Air India on Tuesday said it has closed the internal investigation into the actions of its crew operating and administrative staff supporting the AI 102 (New York-New Delhi) on November 26, 2022.
In a statement, the airline said it accepts that, notwithstanding the mitigating circumstances, based on the letter of the CAR (Civil Aviation Requirement) it did not correctly classify the incident and therefore did not report it as required.
"The crew and ground staff have been issued warning letters to henceforth adhere strictly to CAR definition of 'unruly' when reporting incidents onboard so that later investigation can assess the facts. The cabin crew and ground staff have been counselled and have since returned to duty," it said.

In a statement on Tuesday, DGCA said the incidents of passenger misbehaviour occurred on the AI-142 flight from Paris to New Delhi on December 6, 2022.

Aviation regulator DGCA on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Air India for not reporting two incidents of unruly passenger behaviour onboard a Paris-New Delhi flight in December last year.
This is the second time in less than a week that the watchdog has taken enforcement action against the airline in connection with unruly passenger behaviour.
In a statement on Tuesday, DGCA said the incidents of passenger misbehaviour occurred on the AI-142 flight from Paris to New Delhi on December 6, 2022.
One drunk passenger was caught smoking in the lavatory and not adhering to the crew instructions, and another passenger allegedly relieved himself on a vacant seat and blanket of a fellow female passenger when she went to the lavatory, it said.
"Enforcement action in the form of a financial penalty of Rs 10,00,000 has been imposed on Air India for not reporting the incident to DGCA and delaying in referring the matter to its Internal Committee, which is a violation of applicable DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements," the statement said.

The Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi is considering one month extension to its new excise policy with the city staring at a major liquor shortage in the coming days with private wine and beer stores being asked to shut shop from August 1. 
On Saturday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that Delhi government has withdrawn the new excise policy and directed for selling liquor from government run stores only.
However, according to a PTI report quoting sources,  preempting a chaos due to shutting of private liquor shops and time needed for opening government vends, a proposal is likely to be soon presented before Delhi Cabinet for extension to the 2021-22 policy. 
The 468 private liquor shops operating in the city will be shut from August 1 as the term of their licences and that of the new excise policy expire on July 31.
Meanwhile, the private liquor stores across the city on Saturday offered heavy discounts and schemes like one plus one free and one plus two free to sell their remaining stock.
With new policy gone, the excise licences issued to hotels, clubs and restaurants having bars, and wholesale operations will also become redundant apart from private run liquor stores in the city.  It means, there will be virtually no liquor supply from the wholesalers to the entire hospitality sector and retail vends in the city after July 31, till some alternate arrangements are made by the government, liquor trade experts claimed.
Sisodia said that the Chief Secretary has been asked to ensure that there is no chaos in the city during the transition period before opening of government liquor stores and also for keeping check on sale of illegal alcohol.
Officials said that the proposal for extension of excise policy was moved to Sisodia through Chief Secretary.
"After approval of Delhi Cabinet the proposal will be sent to the LG for his nod. The whole whole process may take around a week and till extension is granted after LG's approval, there will be shortage in the city," sources said.
No response was available from Delhi government or its Excise department about the arrangements being made to ensure liquor supply in the city after withdrawal of new excise policy.
President of National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI) Kabir Suri said that there was "lack of clarity" over the emerging situation and things will be clearer only with further instructions from the Delhi government.
Excise Policy 2021-22 extended twice before for two months each after April, will come to an end on July 31 as Delhi government has decided to go back to old excise regime and run liquor stores for coming six months.  The major shift, following a CBI probe recommended by Lt Governor into alleged violations of rules and procedural lapses in implementation of Excise Policy 2021-22, is also feared to disrupt entire supply chain of liquor in the city.
It will be second time within any year as the city is staring at a liquor shortage.
