Why Delhi is seeing another Mayor election 2 months after AAP's Shelly Oberoi won

Between January and February this year, violent scenes like these inside the MCD House forced the Delhi mayor election to be postponed three times.

Finally, on 22 February 2023, the Aam Aadmi Party won the mayoral poll months after winning the MCD election. Shelly Oberoi became the first mayor of the re-unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

But just two months later, Delhi has headed for a mayoral election again. And the Aam Aadmi Party has fielded winner Shelly Oberoi once more.

This is because Delhi's civic body elects a new mayor after every financial year concludes. This is in contrast to MCD elections, which are held after every 5 years.

In mayoral polls, the first year is reserved for women, the second year for the open category, the third year for the reserved category, and the remaining two years again for the open category.

The upcoming mayoral election is scheduled for 26 April.
