Delhi Elections: Arvind Kejriwal files nomination from New Delhi seat

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Arvind Kejriwal filed his nomination for the New Delhi Assembly constituency on Wednesday, ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5.

Kejriwal is contesting against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Parvesh Verma and Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit.

After completing the nomination process, Kejriwal emphasized his government's achievements and urged voters to prioritize progress and development over divisive rhetoric.

"I have filed the nomination. I would like to tell the people of Delhi that please vote for work, on one side there is a party that works and on the other side, there is a party that abuses... So vote for work, education, health, electricity, water, roads, vote for these things. A lot of work has been done. There is still a lot of work left to be done, so I hope that people will vote for hard work. They (BJP) have neither a CM nor vision and narrative," said the former Chief Minister.

Kejriwal has represented the New Delhi Assembly constituency since 2015, securing significant victories in previous elections.

In 2015, he defeated BJP’s Nupur Sharma with a margin exceeding 35%. In the 2020 elections, he triumphed over BJP's Sunil Kumar Yadav with a vote margin of over 30%, receiving 46,758 votes.

Expressing optimism about AAP’s prospects, party MP Sandeep Pathak stated, "The question is not only about this seat but there is a very good atmosphere in favour of AAP in the whole of Delhi... the public is fully aware that if BJP comes, all the good work being done here will be stopped."

The Delhi Assembly polls will be conducted in a single phase, with results to be announced on February 8.

The AAP has declared candidates for all 70 seats, while the BJP has finalized candidates for 59 constituencies. The nomination process will close on January 17, followed by scrutiny on January 18, and the final date for withdrawal of candidature is January 20.

The Congress, once dominant in Delhi politics with a 15-year reign, has faced significant setbacks in the last two assembly elections, failing to secure a single seat.

AAP, on the other hand, has maintained a stronghold, winning 62 out of 70 seats in 2020, while the BJP managed only eight seats.
