Nepal chopper crash: five bodies recovered in Lamjura 

Rescuers have found 5 bodies at the site of the crash in the Lamjura area of Likhupike Rural Municipality. There were six passengers onboard.&nbsp;

Five bodies have been recovered from the accident site of a private commercial helicopter carrying six people that crashed in hilly terrain in eastern Nepal on Tuesday, a media report said.
The Manang Air NA-MV chopper took off from Surke Airport in Solukhumbu district at 10:04 am for Kathmandu and suddenly lost contact at an altitude above 12,000 feet at 10:13 am, said Gyanendra Bhul, Manager at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
The helicopter crashed in the Lamjura area of Likhupike Rural Municipality in the remote mountainous Solukhumbu district. A detailed report is yet to come as a rescue operation is underway, said a senior official at TIA.
According to police, the helicopter met with the accident at approximately 3500 meters above sea level in the Lamjura Pass, The Himalayan Times newspaper reported.
"Five bodies have been recovered from the accident site and a search operation is underway," the report quoted police as saying.
Five Mexican nationals and pilot Chet B Gurung were aboard the helicopter.
Founded in 1997, Manang Air is a helicopter airline based in Kathmandu. It has been operating helicopters in commercial air transportation within the Nepalese territory under the Regulation of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.
The company provides chartered services and is focused on personalised services such as adventure flights helicopter excursions or expedition work.&nbsp;

The twin-engine ATR 72-500 aircraft plummeted into a gorge as it was approaching Pokhara International Airport in the Himalayan foothills.

The investigation committee found that the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from the crashed Yeti Airlines ATR-72 aircraft, which killed all the 72 passengers on board on January 15 in Nepal, indicated that there was a problem in the engine.
"In ATR-72 aircraft feather means to stay inclined to 90 degrees in spite of being in a certain degree as turned by the pilots. In order to increase the speed, the pilot has to incline the propeller blade using the liver that is in the cockpit. With the propeller blade standing at 90 degrees, the plane would lose aerodynamic movement," the committee said in a report.
The twin-engine ATR 72-500 aircraft plummeted into a gorge as it was approaching Pokhara International Airport in the Himalayan foothills. The crash site is about 1.6 km from the runway at an elevation of about 820 meters (2,700 feet).

A passenger plane carrying 72 passengers including five Indians crashed in Nepal's Pokhara on January 15, 2023.

Families of the 72 victims of the Nepal plane crash, including 5 Indians, are likely to miss out on millions in compensation because of delay in passage of the Air Carriers&rsquo; Liability and Insurance Bill, The Kathmandu Post reported on January 20.
In 2020, the Nepal Government finalised a draft bill to increase minimum compensation for injury or death of a passenger from 20,000 US dollars to 100,000 US dollars for domestic airlines.
However, the bill is yet to be cleared both by the Cabinet and the Nepalese Parliament, the report said.
As per the Montreal Convention 1999, the global minimum compensation is 1,75,000 US dollars.
However, Nepal is yet to ratify the proposed draft bill, the report added.

Eyewitnesses who witnessed the moments of horrific plane crash that killed over 60 passengers in Nepal's Pokhara on Sunday shared the horror of seeing the aircraft crashing and catching fire.&nbsp;
A local resident Kalpana Sunar, was washing clothes in the front yard of her house when she saw an aircraft hurtling towards her, before being jolted by a bomb-like explosion caused by the Yeti Airlines plane, the Kathmandu Post reported.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The aircraft was tilted at an unusual angle and moments later, I heard a bomb-like explosion,&rdquo; she was quoted as saying.
&ldquo;Then I saw a plume of black smoke billowing from the Seti River gorge,&rdquo; she added.
One of the plane&rsquo;s wings hit the ground about 12 metres from the house of another local resident Geeta Sunar.
"Had the aircraft fallen just a bit closer to our home, the settlements would have been destroyed,&rdquo; the newspaper quoted her as saying.
The flight took off from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport at 10:33 am on Sunday and crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport in Pokhara, minutes before landing.
At least 68 people have died and four people are still missing, officials said, in Nepal's worst aviation tragedy in over three decades. There were 15 foreigners, including five Indian nationals, onboard the ill-fated flight.

A Kathmandu Airport official told Reuters that the so-called black boxes are in a good condition, they look good from outside.&nbsp;&nbsp; Data that will be found in the recorders will help investigating authorities determine the cause of the plane crash.&nbsp; Meanwhile, rescuers have managed to find 68 bodies from the wreckage which are being kept at the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences. The bodies will be handed over to respective families after a post-mortem has been conducted.&nbsp; The Kathmandu Post reported that of the retrieved bodies, only 35 have been identified so far. It further added that due to the difficult terrain of the crash site, rescuers are finding it difficult to look for the remaining bodies.&nbsp; Rescue and search efforts continued on Monday morning after being paused after sun down on Sunday.&nbsp;

The 15 foreign nationals onboard the plane included five Indians, four Russians, two Koreans, an Australian, a French, an Argentine and an Israeli.

The Pokhara International Airport, which witnessed the fatal crash of a Nepalese passenger plane with 72 people onboard on Sunday, was inaugurated two weeks ago by Nepal&rsquo;s newly-appointed Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal &lsquo;Prachanda&rsquo; and built with Chinese assistance.
Built in the backdrop of the pristine Annapurna Mountain Range, the airport was officially inaugurated on January 1, 2023.
The flagship project was part of China&rsquo;s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation.
The Nepal government signed a USD 215.96 million soft loan agreement with China in March 2016 for the construction of the airport in this tourist hub, according to Kathmandu Post newspaper.
Last year, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi handed over the Pokhara Regional International Airport to the then Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, during a courtesy call held at Baluwatar.
Speaking at the airport&rsquo;s inauguration ceremony, Prachanda said aerial connectivity is the most effective means of connectivity for a landlocked country like Nepal.
"With the opening of this airport, Pokhara's relationship with the international region has been established,&rdquo; he said.
While landing at the Pokhara airport around 11 am on Sunday, the Yeti Airlines aircraft crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport.
There were a total of 68 passengers and four crew members.
Five Indians were among the passengers.

A Reuters report said 5 Indian visitors were also onboard the aircraft.
The plane crashed into a river gorge which is between the Domestic and Pokhra International Airport on Sunday while landing.&nbsp;

Businessman Ashok Kumar Tripathi and his Thane-based estranged wife Vaibhavi Bandekar Tripathi were on a reunion trip to the Himalayan country along with their kids, son Dhanush, 22, and daughter Ritika, 15, when tragedy struck on Sunday.
Ashok Tripathi, 54, who ran a company in Odisha, and Vaibhavi Tripathi, 51, who worked in a financial firm in Mumbai, had separated following court orders, an official from the Kapurbawdi police station in Thane said on Monday.
As per court orders, the family was to be together for 10 days in a year and this year they had planned a trip to Nepal. Their plane, belonging to Tara Air, went missing on Sunday morning in the mountainous region of Nepal minutes after taking off from the tourist city of Pokhara.
Besides the four Indian nationals, the plane was carrying two Germans and 13 Nepal passengers, along with a three-member Nepal crew. Rescuers have so far pulled out 20 bodies from the wreckage of the crashed plane and located one more.
Unlike on Sunday, there was hardly any movement around the Rustomjee Athena housing society in Thane city's Balkum area, where Vaibhavi Bandekar Tripathi lived with her children.
 
Residents of the housing society declined to meet reporters as the tragedy has left them shocked.
Vaibhavi Tripathi held a top position at a private financial firm in Mumbai and had recently taken leave to go on a vacation with her family members. According to sources in her office, she was No. 2 in the company, which operates out of BKC, a business district in suburban Mumbai.
An employee said they came to know about the crash on Monday morning and everybody was in shock.
Vaibhavi Tripathi's 80-year-old mother, who is in poor health, is the only person left at the family's home in Thane and she has not been informed about the tragedy. A Mumbai police officer said they are waiting for the arrival of a man who has taken her flat in Borivli, a western suburb, on rent and is currently out of town.
