A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend after she pressured him to marry her, and later buried her body in a bid to destroy evidence, police said on Monday.
The incident, which took place six months ago, came to light following a detailed investigation by the police which led to the arrest of the accused on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Madhushree Angadi (26) from Narayanapura village in Gadag taluk. The accused, Satish Hiremath, also hails from the same village. The duo had been in a relationship for six years.
According to police, Madhushree&rsquo;s parents disapproved of her relationship with Satish and sent her to live with their relatives in Gadag. On the night of December 16, 2024, she left her relative&rsquo;s house and disappeared.
A missing person&rsquo;s complaint was filed at Betageri Police Station on January 12, 2025.
Gadag Superintendent of Police, BS Namegouda said Madhushree had been pressing her boyfriend to marry her, leading to frequent arguments.
During inquiry, it was found that on the night of December 16, Satish took Madhushree to a farmhouse near Narayanapura where he killed the woman following a heated argument by strangling her with a veil.
After the murder, Satish buried her body and feigned ignorance about her whereabouts.
To avoid suspicion, he resumed work at the petrol bunk and periodically returned to the burial site to scatter her remains elsewhere and destroy evidence, he said.
A breakthrough in the case came through technical evidence. A message ping from Madhushree's phone at a location that didn't match Satish&rsquo;s version, raising suspicion, police said.
Upon interrogation, Satish confessed to the crime and led the police to the burial spot.
"As soon as we received information about the incident during interrogation, our officers registered a murder case and initiated a thorough investigation. The accused has been taken into custody, and we are planning to take him into police custody for further investigation and evidence collection," the senior police officer said.
Earlier, the accused had claimed that he dropped her off on the outskirts of the town on a two-wheeler and didn&rsquo;t know where she went.
The police suspected that the two might have eloped. But there was no contact from Madhushree, which raised suspicion.
"After verifying all the evidence and leads, we arrested the accused," he added.
While some skeletal remains have been recovered, Madhushree&rsquo;s skull is yet to be found. Forensic examination and investigation is underway.

The Indore couple checked in at our property on May 22 and ordered a coffee each, Constantine, the owner of Shipara Homestay, told PTI.
"They then went out without a guide. I assume they went to see the root bridge like every other tourist who came to the village," he said, adding that Raja had paid Rs 1,000 for the room, Rs 80 for the coffee and Rs 300 for dinner.
The couple, who had not made any prior room reservations for their trip to Meghalaya, earlier did not get a room at a homestay in Sohra in East Khasi Hills district, which forced them to trek from Mawlakhiat to Nongriat, also in the same district, with the help of a guide, villagers said.
Interestingly, despite Sonam&rsquo;s claim to her mother-in-law over the phone that she was fasting, Constantine said both had a "very good dinner", which they enjoyed.
Another villager saw the couple near the root bridge before dark.
Constantine said he recalled the face of Raja when he saw it later on social media.
However, he added that he did not notice the presence of the three hitmen &mdash; friends of Sonam&rsquo;s lover &mdash; who allegedly took part in the murder.
At the homestay, Raja and Sonam occupied one of the five available rooms.
Constantine recalled their unusual behaviour the next morning (May 23).
"It was unusually early for our guests to wake up that early (5am). They knocked on our door and I had to wake up my wife to enquire if they needed breakfast. They refused and told me they wanted to check out," he said.
Raghuvanshi and his wife went missing while vacationing in Sohra the same day. His body was found in a gorge on June 2.
Constantine said he was not aware of where the three other accomplices stayed.
Meanwhile, Sonam, Raj (accused of being the main conspirator), and the three alleged hitmen were being held at Sadar police station in Shillong, where they were served North Indian food.
A senior police officer said that considering their food habits, which are unlike the local food preferences here, the accused were served simple North Indian food and were also given another set of clothes.

Convinced of his sister&rsquo;s guilt, Govind Raghuvanshi also said his family had snapped ties with her and vowed to fight a legal battle to get justice for Raja Raghuvanshi&rsquo;s family.
Wednesday marks one month to the day Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi got married. The Indore couple went to Meghalaya for their honeymoon and went missing soon after.
Raja&rsquo;s blood stained body was found 10 days later in a deep gorge and Sonam was presumed missing till June 9, when she was nabbed from a dhaba hundreds of miles away in Uttar Pradesh.
A court in Shillong sent Sonam and her four aides to eight-day police custody. &ldquo;Police sought a 10-day remand. The court granted 8 days of police custody," East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem told PTI.
The 24-year-old woman was arrested from Ghazipur, while her aides were apprehended from Indore for their alleged role in conspiring to kill Raja.
The special investigation team sought police custody of the accused to reconstruct the crime scene in Sohra, the officer said.
Investigators said Sonam told Raja Raghuvanshi that she would let him consummate the marriage only after making an offering at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati.
Accordingly, Raja planned their trip to Guwahati and adjacent Meghalaya, while his wife and her boyfriend allegedly plotted to kill him in the jungles of the north-eastern state, they said.
"Sonam convinced Raja that they need to make offerings at the Kamakhya Devi Temple before consummating the marriage," a police officer who is a part of the investigation told PTI.
Sonam and Raja got married in Indore on May 11 and arrived in Meghalaya via Guwahati on May 20. Both went missing on May 23 in Sohra in East Khasi Hills district, hours after checking out of a homestay at Nongriat village.
Raja's body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2. A search continued for Sonam, who emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away, in the early hours of June 9 and surrendered as police arrested her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha and the three contract killers hired by them to murder Raja.
"Sonam coerced her husband to take her to the deep jungles of Nongriat with the belief that the hitmen she hired would have a better chance of killing him somewhere on the route, considering it is secluded. But, since there were too many tourists trekking to Nongriat on May 22 and May 23, they couldn't kill him there," the officer said.
"They finally killed him near Weisawdong Falls, and dumped his body into the deep gorge," he said.
Syiem, who is overseeing the investigation, told PTI that the contract killers arrived in Guwahati on May 21, a day after the couple reached the north-east.
The killers procured a machete from outside their hotel in Guwahati, and then travelled by road to Shillong, he said.
"We have gathered CCTV evidence, making this investigation a very tight-knit one," he said.
Sonam was in touch with her boyfriend Raj throughout the day of the murder, while Raj coordinated with the three contract killers, he said.
"Sonam was present when Raja was killed," the officer said, adding that after the crime, she fled.
Sonam, her boyfriend Raj and the three suspected contract killers were produced before a court in Shillong on Wednesday.
Sonam&rsquo;s brother Govind said that based on the evidence so far, he knows "100 per cent" that it was his sister who executed the crime, and she should be hanged if found guilty.
Govind also said that his family has snapped ties with her after her alleged involvement in the killing of her husband came to light.
An emotional Govind reached Raja Raghuvanshi's house in Indore to console the latter's family members. Sharing the family's grief, he hugged Raja's mother Uma and broke down. Coming out in support of the victim's family, he vowed to fight a legal battle to get justice for them. He later addressed media persons.
When asked if Sonam should be given capital punishment if charges against her were proven, he said, "Absolutely. If Sonam is found guilty, she should be hanged straight away. I will appoint a lawyer myself to represent Raja Raghuvanshi's family in the court." "I am with the truth. Raja Raghuvanshi's family has lost a son. I have apologised to his family. Our family has broken ties with Sonam," he said.
"I do not know whether my sister Sonam has confessed her crime in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case or not, but from the evidence that is coming out, I know 100 per cent that she is the one who executed this crime," he said.
He, however, dismissed reports of the alleged love affair between Sonam and Raj Kushwaha, another prime accused in the case.
"Raj always called Sonam didi (sister). Sonam tied a rakhi to me and Raj while together in my house. Raj was just our employee. He was working in our office for two-three years. He used to manage the office and handle clients," he said.
Govind claimed that the three other accused in the case - Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi - have an old relationship with Raj Kushwaha.
Sonam made the first phone call to Govind before she surrendered before the police in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur.
"During the phone call, she was crying miserably and was very nervous. I informed the police myself and got her to surrender," he said.

When asked about Raj Kushwaha's role in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, he said, ''Raj was just our employee." Accused Sonam's maternal home is located in Indore's Govind Nagar Kharcha area. She handled the family business of lamination sheets used in furniture.
According to the local police, Raj Kushwaha, who was reportedly romantically involved with Sonam and accused of plotting the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, is a 12th dropout and worked as an accountant at the lamination sheet unit owned by Sonam's family.

Albert Pde, the guide at Mawlakhiat, told PTI, "I could identify one of the suspects from the photos provided by police." "I am happy that the criminals are finally behind the bars. We stand vindicated. Those who tried to tarnish the image of Sohra and its people as violent have now been exposed," Pde added.
Pde had said he saw the couple accompanied by the three men as they were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23.
According to the guide, "The four men, including Raja, were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men conversed in Hindi," he said, admitting that he was not very conversant in the language.
Pde had initially offered his services to walk them to Nongriat on May 22, but they politely refused and hired another guide identified as Bha Wansai, who dropped them at Shipara homestay.
Police on Monday arrested Sonam, a 24-year-old woman from Indore, for allegedly orchestrating the murder of her husband Raja during their honeymoon in the scenic town of Sohra in Meghalaya.
Raja was killed by men allegedly hired by Sonam, who went 'missing' and surfaced in UP's Ghazipur where she surrendered at the Nandganj police station after the arrest of three assailants&mdash;Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (21) -- in overnight raids.
The autopsy report of Raja Raghuvanshi indicated that he was hit twice with a sharp object on his head, officials at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) said.
"The autopsy report indicated there were two sharp cuts on the head of the deceased&mdash;one from behind and one from the front," East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told PTI, quoting the report.
He said police have also seen the two cuts on his head too during the inquest.
According to the officer, police registered a murder case under Sohra PS after the initial inquest.

The 1000-page chargesheet was filed in the court of Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division) Anuj Kumar Thakur against Muskan and Sahil for offences under sections 103 (1) (punishment for murder) and 238 (A) (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Saurabh was killed on the night of March 4 at his house in Indiranagar in Meerut district. His wife, Muskan, and Sahil are accused of drugging him and stabbing him to death. It is alleged they dismembered his body, severing his head and hands, and hid the body parts in a blue drum filled with cement.
After the incident, both of them went to Himachal Pradesh.
The investigation into the sensational case revealed that Muskan had allegedly been planning the murder since November 2023, according to the police.
Saurabh was killed "not because of tantra-mantra, but because he was an obstacle in their love affair", the police claimed.
Muskan was arrested along with her lover Sahil Shukla on March 18. Earlier, Muskan "confessed" to her family, after which they were arrested.
Both the accused are currently in jail.
Brahmapuri Circle Officer Antariksh Jain told PTI on Monday that the chargesheet details the murder conspiracy, evidence and has statements of about 34 witnesses. The case has been investigated bythe Brahmapuri police station in-charge Ramakant Pachauri.
Police sources said that according to the initial plan, the two accused wanted to pack the body in a suitcase and throw it away. A piece of bone was also found in the suitcase.
According to officials, the accused have been provided a government advocate.
Meanwhile, the jail administration said that Muskan is pregnant and has been kept in the women's barracks. Her family has distanced itself from her, while Sahil's grandmother and elder brother had met him.
A jail official told PTI, "On Saturday, Sahil's brother had come to meet him." Saurabh and Muskan had a love marriage in 2016, which was opposed by the family. In 2019, the couple had a daughter.
According to the police, due to deteriorating financial condition, Saurabh had a dispute with his family and he started living in Indiranagar. During this time, the relationship between Muskan and Sahil deepened.
The police said that Saurabh had filed for divorce in 2021, but the case was withdrawn due to the child. The couple's relationship remained strained.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two men had brought him there on a motorcycle and gunned him down before fleeing.
Following a complaint by the victim's brother, Naeem, a named FIR was registered against Mehrban and Umar. Acting on a tip-off, police attempted to stop the duo late Tuesday night near Aman Colony.
The two opened fire, prompting retaliatory action in which Mehrban was shot in the leg and apprehended along with Umar, he said.
Police recovered two country-made pistols, the motorcycle used in the crime, and the victim's mobile phone.

Om Prakash, originally from Bihar, held a master's degree in Geology and had a distinguished career, having served as the Director General of Police of Karnataka in March 2025. He also led the Fire and Emergency Services and Home Guards before his tenure as police chief.

According to officials, the incident occurred on April 13 when Kehr Singh's body was found hanging in a rented room with the door locked from inside.
Initially, it was suspected to be a case of suicide. However, the post-mortem report said he died due to strangulation, they said.
Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Mukesh Chandra Mishra said, "The post-mortem report clearly indicates death by strangulation, though the closed room suggested a suicide. We are investigating all possible angles and have taken both named accused -- Rekha and her lover Pintu (25) -- into custody." The couple was sent to jail after a medical examination on Friday.
Singh was working as a sanitation worker posted on contract with the Fatehganj Paschimi Nagar Panchayat in Bareilly.
Mishra said, "Suspecting poisoning, we have also preserved the victim's viscera for forensic testing. During questioning, Rekha initially avoided direct answers but later confessed to mixing poison in her husband's food. However, she denied strangling him or hanging the body, claiming her husband might have locked the room and taken his own life." Police said they are awaiting the viscera report to confirm the poisoning.
Meanwhile, a case of murder has been registered against Rekha and Pintu at the Fatehganj Paschimi police station based on a complaint filed by the victim's brother, Ashok.
In his complaint, Ashok alleged that his brother had learned about his wife's affair with Pintu. Following this, they conspired to kill his brother.
"They first gave him poison. When he became unconscious, they strangled him with a rope and then used the same rope to hang his body from the ceiling to make it look like suicide," the FIR stated.
The investigation is ongoing, and further action will depend on the forensic findings and statement corroboration, police said.

When her husband confronted him on Friday, leading to an altercation, local people gathered at the spot and started beating up Sharma, the SHO said.
In the middle of this, Sharma took out a paper cutter from his pocket and slit his throat. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared him dead due to excessive bleeding, Shekhawat said.
The SHO said that Sharma, a native of Alwar district who shifted to Jhotwara recently, was in judicial custody in Delhi in a case of murder and was released on bail sometime back.
Police have launched a probe after the sending the body for autopsy, he said.

"Janta and Bashir hatched a conspiracy to kill Mastan. He needed some money and on the pretext of lending him the amount, Bashir called Mastan near Nasirabad Road on Monday evening. They met and began drinking near an abandoned house," she said.
When Mastan got drunk, Bashir hit him with a knife and slit his throat, the SP said.
The SP said that Mastan's wife Janta was a suspect since the investigation began and after collecting evidence that pointed out her and Bashir's involvement, the police detained them for questioning.
"Janta was not present at the scene of the crime but she was involved in planning the murder. The matter is being investigated further and anyone else found involved in the crime will be arrested," she added.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said Balveer and Manmeet were involved in the April 2 murder of one Parmjeet Singh alias Gulla in Hastinapur.
The officer said the encounter took place when a police team conducting a routine check tried to stop two men on a motorcycle near Jammudeep crossing after finding their behaviour suspicious.
Instead of stopping, the rider tried to speed the motorcycle but it skidded.
When police approached them, the accused opened fire, injuring head constable Tarun Malik in the hand, the officer said. Police returned the fire and wounded the two criminals.
All three injured were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police seized a .32-bore country-made pistol and a .315-bore country-made revolver from the criminals' possession, and impounded their motorcycle.

The boyfriend, identified as Rishabh Nigam, was apparently upset that victim Vandana Dwivedi had started avoiding him recently, they said.
The incident took place at a lodge in the Hinjawadi area of Pimpri Chinchwad on Saturday and the police got the information on Sunday morning, they said.
According to a senior police official, Nigam was apprehended in Mumbai. He has been arrested under Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder) and Arms Act.
Police said Nigam and Dwivedi, both hailing from Uttar Pradesh, were in a relationship since 2013. She worked in a big IT firm in Hinjawadi, while her boyfriend lived in UP.
Nigam was apparently miffed as the deceased had started avoiding him recently, the official said.
&ldquo;A couple of years ago, he was beaten up back in their hometown, and he suspected the deceased&rsquo;s role in that assault,&rdquo; said Deputy Commissioner of Police Bapu Bangar.
Nigam had come from UP and checked in at the lodge on January 25.
&ldquo;The next day, the deceased joined him. As per preliminary information, on Saturday night, he shot the woman and fled. We learnt about the incident this morning,&rdquo; said Bangar.
CCTV footage at the lodge showed Nigam leaving the premises on Saturday night.
The man has been arrested, and further investigations, including the exact motive and from where procured the firearm, are underway, the official added.
