No foul play in death of Indian students in US but report awaited: foreign ministry

India’s external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal doused fire on claims that India-origin students were being targeted in the US. The MEA representative said that the five killings reported this year were not interconnected.

“There are 5 Indian students who have died...that also includes students from India diaspora. 2 are India nationals and rest 3 are of Indian origin but US nationals,” Jaiswal said in a press conference on February 8.

The MEA spokesperson also clarified that there was no “foul play” in the killing of Shreyas Reddy, who was found dead in Ohio’s Cincinnati. However, India still awaits the final medical reports provided by US authorities.

Last month, 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini was hammered to death by a homeless drug addict in Georgia. Syed Mazahir Ali, pursuing a Masters in IT, was brutally attacked by unidentified men near his house in Chicago.

Sameer Kamath, an Indian-origin student, was found dead in the woods in Indiana this week. Authorities said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
