Calcutta High Court directs cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay ₹4 lakh per month as interim alimony to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and daughter, revising a lower court&rsquo;s earlier order.

Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance during the ongoing legal battle with his spouse.
Jahan had moved the high court against a district sessions court's order directing the cricketer to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to her daughter in 2023.
"In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs 1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners, till disposal of the main application," the order passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee stated.
"However as regards petitioner's child the husband /opposite party No.2 will always be at liberty to voluntarily assist her with educational and/or other reasonable expenses, over and above the aforesaid amount," the order added.
Jahan had lodged an FIR at the Jadavpur police station against Shami and his family in March 2018, four years after their marriage in April 2014, alleging "enormous physical and mental torture" under Section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violation (PWDV) Act, 2005 and "sustained indifference and neglect" of her minor daughter.
Besides domestic violence, she also accused Shami of dowry harassment and match fixing while alleging that Shami had stopped shouldering financial responsibility for running her family expenses.
She had prayed for monetary relief, including an interim monetary relief of Rs 7 lakh per month for herself and an additional Rs 3 lakh for her daughter.
The magistrate, while disposing of her application, had initially rejected her prayer for monetary relief and directed the pacer a monthly payment of Rs 80,000 towards his minor daughter.
On appeal, the order was later modified, directing Shami to a monthly payment of Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to his daughter.
"In view of materials placed before me and considering the elements for the determination of the quantum of maintenance as held in the salutary judgments, I am of the view that the quantum of interim monetary relief as fixed by the Court below requires revision," the high court order stated.
"The opposite party/husband's income, financial disclosure and earnings established that he is in a position to pay a higher amount. The petitioner's wife, who has remained unmarried and is living independently with the child, is entitled to a levelled maintenance that she enjoyed during her continuance of marriage and which reasonably secures her future as well as the future of the child," it went on to add.

The meeting came shortly after Shami reacted sharply to reports suggesting that his place in the upcoming England tour hinges on his fitness and ability to deliver long spells. Some reports even went as far as to hint at his potential retirement from international cricket.

Shami&rsquo;s IPL 2025 campaign with Sunrisers Hyderabad has been underwhelming. The senior fast bowler managed only six wickets in nine matches at an average of 56.16, leading to him being dropped from the playing XI. He hasn&rsquo;t bowled for India in Test cricket since the World Test Championship Final against Australia in 2023. A prolonged injury absence followed, ruling him out of action after the ODI World Cup the same year.
However, Shami returned to domestic cricket, turning out for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, where he picked up seven wickets in a match against Madhya Pradesh. There were whispers of a possible return during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, but he remained absent from the squad.

Shubman Gill was more artisan than artist en route to his eighth ODI hundred after Mohammed Shami&rsquo;s satisfying five-wicket haul, propelling India to a workmanlike six-wicket win over Bangladesh in their Champions Trophy opener here on Thursday.
Gill&rsquo;s unbeaten innings (101, 129b, 9&times;4. 2&times;6) had a mirror image in Bangladesh innings through Towhid Hridoy&rsquo;s 100 (118b) that lifted them to 228 from the depths of 35 for five after batting by choice.
But India negated various pressure points, including a sluggish surface, during their chase effectively through Gill&rsquo;s knock full of substance, and ended up at 231 for four in 46.3 overs.
It&rsquo;s also a nerve-settling victory for India ahead of their much-awaited clash against a more accomplished Pakistan at the same venue on February 23.
Gill, the world&rsquo;s No. 1 ODI batter, played a massive role in it, dishing out a century which was more remarkable for its restraint than the customary flair.
It was also a reflection of his growing stature as India&rsquo;s new generation batting star.
Chasing a modest 229, openers Rohit Sharma (41, 36b) and Gill gave India a rollicking start.
They added 69 runs in 9.5 overs before Rohit got out to pacer Taskin Ahmed while attempting a mighty heave, leaving India at 69 for 1.
The partnership was significant from a game point of view as the pitch slowed down considerably in the middle overs, making batting a tad tougher task.
Virat Kohli looked a bit over-watchful and circumspect before opening his account after facing 10 balls.
Though he grew comfortable, an uppish cut of leg-spinner Rishad Hossain ended his stay for 22.
The quick wickets of Axar Patel, who was once again promoted to No. 5, and Shreyas Iyer had India at a slightly worrying 144 for four.
But KL Rahul, who was dropped on nine by Jaker Ali off Taskin, ensured that there were no further hiccups and played a resolute unbeaten innings of 41 off 47 balls.
Gill and Rahul added 87 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket alliance to carry their side home.
Earlier, a cramping Hridoy, who made a courageous maiden ODI hundred and an equally gutsy Ali (68, 114b, 4&times;4) added 154 for a doughty sixth-wicket stand to give some respectability to Bangladesh total.

India also found another shining shard of positive in Shami&rsquo;s outing.
Shami also eased a lot of worries over the absence of injured pace ace Jasprit Bumrah with a five for 53 effort, and during the spell he also became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets.
Hridoy&rsquo;s innings was an example of how to construct an innings yet maintain a healthy run-rate as he reached the milestone in just 114 balls.
He and Ali also showed excellent composure under pressure.
However, both the Bangladesh batters benefited from the largesse of Indian fielders, as Ali was dropped on zero off the first ball he faced off left-arm spinner Axar (2/43).
It also robbed Axar of a hat-trick after he dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim and Tanzid Hasan off successive deliveries.
Hridoy had the fortune when he was grassed by Hardik Pandya at mid-off off Kuldeep Yadav when he was on 23.
Rahul, who was sharp behind the stumps, floored a stumping chance to give the second reprieve for Hridoy.
But those moments of slip-ups should not take anything away from the way Indian bowlers, especially Shami, used the new ball on a rather slow but smooth pitch.
Shami, who had an average outing against England in T20I and ODI series recently at home, did not disappoint on the big stage and took the wicket of opener Soumya Sarkar in the first over itself.
He did not take much time to grab his second wicket when he ousted Mehdy Hasan Miraz &mdash; caught brilliantly by Shubman Gill in the slips.
The Bengal pacer later returned to break the determined stand between Hridoy and Ali, dismissing the latter.
He later took two more wickets, and now the 34-year-old is India&rsquo;s highest wicket taker in ICC tournaments, going past former pacer Zaheer Khan (59).
Harshit Rana (3/31) gave good backing to his senior partner.

Skipper Rohit Sharma showered praise on his deputy Shubman Gill and veteran pacer Mohammed Shami for coming up with game-changing performances against Bangladesh in India&rsquo;s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh here on Thursday.
Gill made an unbeaten hundred and Shami walked away with a five-wicket haul as India registered a six-wicket win over Bangladesh at the DICS.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been in that situation many times before and like I said many times (in the past), there&rsquo;s a lot of experience in that dressing room to handle that composure where it&rsquo;s needed and KL (Rahul) and (Shubman) Gill at the end were quite composed,&rdquo; Rohit said during the post-match presentation.
Rohit heaped praise on player of the match Gill.
&ldquo;Gill, we know the class that he has, he&rsquo;s been batting brilliantly of late and today what he showed us with the bat shouldn&rsquo;t surprise anyone,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;What was good to see that he was there till the end to make sure that he sees off the game,&rdquo; Rohit added.
Rohit also lauded Shami for his five-for that helped the pacer to complete 200 wickets in ODIs.
&ldquo;Yeah, very happy for him. (It has been a) long time waiting, we obviously know what he brings to us,&rdquo; Rohit said.
&ldquo;The quality that he has, the kind of match winner he is developing himself into for us, every time we throw the ball at him he&rsquo;s got something up his sleeves, which is always nice and we need guys like these to stand up in big moments,&rdquo; he added.
Rohit said India expect the pitch here at the Dubai International Stadium to remain slow for their next Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan on February 23.
&ldquo;Very hard to say that,&rdquo; Rohit replied when asked if his side thought the pitch behaved as per their expectations.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s just one game, very hard to make anything out of the track, but we knew there&rsquo;s not enough grass on the pitch and it is going to be on the slower side and that is exactly how the pitch played,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;But again, you play (according to) the conditions. You try and think about what you want to do as a team and I thought we adapted to the conditions really well, to start with our bowling.&rdquo;
India were off to a brisk start but were forced to change their approach midway through the innings and Rohit admitted his side was &ldquo;under pressure&rdquo; chasing 229.
&ldquo;With the bat as well, yes, we were under pressure a little bit. But when you&rsquo;re playing a game like this, (in the) Champions Trophy (against a) quality team, you&rsquo;re bound to be under pressure and that is where the experience comes into play,&rdquo; he said.
The Mumbaikar said he was not happy with the dropped catch of Jaker Ali (68) which denied Axar Patel a hat-trick.
&ldquo;May take him for dinner tomorrow,&rdquo; he quipped.
&ldquo;It was an easy catch. I should have taken that catch, the standard that I have set for myself, standing in the first slip, that was a little disappointing, but these things happen,&rdquo; Rohit added.
&ldquo;But again, the way these guys bowled that set the game for us to be honest, I know they were 36 for five and then they got a big partnership.&rdquo;
&ldquo;These things are bound to happen, there will be partnerships, credit to (Towhid) Hridoy and Jaker Ali, they played brilliantly to stitch that big partnership,&rdquo; he said.
Gill termed his 101 not out as &ldquo;one of the most satisfying innings&rdquo; for himself
&ldquo;Definitely (it was) one of my most satisfying innings that I&rsquo;ve played and my first century in an ICC event so very satisfying and very happy with the way I performed,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;When myself and Rohit bhai went out there, cutting the ball wasn&rsquo;t that easy because the balls outside the off (stump) weren&rsquo;t coming onto the bat. So I thought of using my feet to even the fast bowlers when I&rsquo;m trying to go over the circle,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;When the when the spinners came on me and Virat bhai were talking about in the middle that it&rsquo;s not easy to score signals off the front foot,&rdquo; he added.
Gill said he was asked to finish off the match. &ldquo;At one point there was a bit of pressure on us and the message was sent from outside (that) I have to try to be at the end and that&rsquo;s what I tried to do,&rdquo; he said.

The 34-year-old, who was the top wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup, last played for India on November 19, 2023. After a successful return to domestic cricket with Bengal in November, Shami has been included in India&rsquo;s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against England.
On January 19, Shami took part in India&rsquo;s first practice session at Eden Gardens. Reports indicate that while the pacer bowled with intensity for over an hour, he experienced slight discomfort and was seen limping back to the dressing room. However, he soon returned to the field and interacted with his Bengal teammates while managing his heavily strapped left knee.
Shami, who will spearhead India&rsquo;s pace attack for the series, started his practice with a gentle warm-up session under the guidance of bowling coach Morne Morkel. Out-of-form veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will continue to form the batting core of India's ODI squad but there are at least three senior players whose future in the 50-over format could be debated when the selectors gather this weekend to pick the squad for the Champions Trophy.
KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja's presence in the side is not a surety for the event starting February 19 even though they were a part of last year's World Cup.
Since the final, India have played six ODIs and while Shami and Jadeja were rested, Rahul was included for both the away bilateral engagements against South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Against Sri Lanka, however, he was dropped in the middle of the series after failing to get going in the middle overs. The world is also yet to forget how his sedate half century after using up 100-plus deliveries became a prime reason for India's loss on November 19, 2023 against Australia.
It is understood that Yashasvi Jaiswal has a very bright chance of making it to the ODI squad. His inclusion would ensure a left-handed batter in the top four.
But if Rishabh Pant is the first-choice wicketkeeper, then would there be any point in having Rahul as the back-up? And if Rahul is not keeping, his place as a batter is not guaranteed.
Among his closest competitors, Ishan Kishan hasn't scored enough runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy while Sanju Samson hasn't been picked by Kerala after he missed the initial games.
If coach Gautam Gambhir still has his say in selection matters like he did till the disastrous Australia tour, then Samson, one of his personal favourites, will surely make the cut.
India will play all their Champions Trophy games in Dubai, starting with the clash against Bangladesh on February 20. This was after the team refused to travel to original hosts Pakistan citing security concerns.

Jadeja's white-ball woes
Jadeja's white ball batting hasn't been as good as it used to be and those who are tracking the selection committee feel that Axar Patel is being seen as way more effective in the ODIs at the moment.
Washington Sundar is expected to make it as an off-spinner but Kuldeep Yadav's fitness is something that selectors would be fretting on. Kuldeep is near full fitness but hasn't played a Vijay Hazare Trophy game.
In case Kuldeep fails to make it, one among Ravi Bishnoi or Varun Chakravarthy is expected to be picked.

Shami's fitness
Coming to Mohammed Shami, the veteran pacer's communication with the team management and the selection committee on his fitness status didn't seem to have the required clarity.
However, he has bowled eight overs each in the last two Vijay Hazare Trophy games and in case Jasprit Bumrah fails to make it due to back spasms, Shami's experience will become crucial for the side.
Hardik Pandya is the seam bowling all-rounder and it will be interesting to see if Nitish Reddy will be considered.
Among the reserve specialist batters, the choice could be between Rinku Singh and Tilak Varma.

"Shami's surgery is done, he is back in India. Shami's return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh. KL Rahul needed an injection, he has started rehab and is at the NCA," said Shah during the media interaction.
Rahul missed the last four Tests of the England series after complaining of pain in his right quadriceps. He is expected to turn up for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, having undergone treatment in London.
Rishabh Pant on track for IPL comeback&nbsp;

The awards ceremony, usually held on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, was deferred because of the Hangzhou Asian Games from September 23 till October 8 last year.
An atmosphere of gaiety pervaded the Rashtrapati Bhawan as 26 athletes and para-athletes were conferred the Arjuna Awards.
Chirag and Satwik, who became world No.1 last year, would be aiming for an Olympic medal in Paris, having all but sealed qualification for the global showpiece later this year by virtue of being world No.2.
"Yes that is our next goal (to win an Olympic medal). We hope to do the country proud again," said Chirag.
Also receiving a huge round of applause was the newly-crowned chess Grandmaster R. Vaishali, the elder sister of precocious chess talent R. Praggnanandhaa.
Vaishali was honoured for becoming the third woman from the country after Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika to turn GM.
Pistol shooting sensation, 19-year-old Esha Singh, was among the notable absentees as she is competing in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta.
On Monday, she qualified for the Paris Olympics after winning the individual and team gold in 10m air pistol events.
Other sporting bigwigs who were chosen for the Arjuna award this year were wrestler Antim Panghal, a former junior world champion and bronze-winner at the senior event last year, boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin (bronze-winner at last year's world championship), and para archer Sheetal Devi.
Devi, who won two gold medals in the Hangzhou Asian Games, is the first international para archer without upper limbs due to a rare condition called Phocomelia.

"It is not exactly an on-field injury. It is an ankle condition that has developed. Shami came to Mumbai to consult the doctors. He will also go to NCA for rehab and recuperation work.
"The national selectors wouldn't have selected him had there not been a chance of him getting fit in time for the Boxing Day Test," a BCCI source, privy to the development, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Shami didn't appear in the first four matches of the recent ODI World Cup due to the team composition requirements.
He got a chance to play in the fifth match after Hardik Pandya tore his left ankle ligament trying to stop a powerful shot on his follow-through in the match against Bangladesh.
Shami ended up getting 24 wickets in seven games and was one of the biggest reasons behind India's sustained dominance for 10 straight games in the showpiece before losing the final to Australia.
"Shami, in fact, came to watch one of Bengal's Vijay Hazare Trophy games as his younger brother Mohammed Kaif is also playing. He seemed to be walking with a slight limp," a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) source said.
It will be interesting to note whether Shami would play the three-day intra-squad match between India Seniors and India A squads, which is a tune-up for the Tests.
It is also learnt for the time being, Shami won't play white ball games as there are seven Test matches, including five against England at home and the 'Amroha Express' is expected to play a big role in the sub-continental conditions where the ball reverses a lot.
Whether Shami will play next year's T20 World Cup will depend on how he fares in the Indian Premier League, where he has had two good seasons for the Gujarat Titans.
