North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his daughter, personally oversaw the recent test-firing of the country's most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile, state media images showed Friday.
The launch on Thursday -- Pyongyang's second ICBM test this year -- involved a Hwasong-17 missile, the official Korean Central News Agency reported, adding that it was fired in response to "frantic" US-South Korea joint military drills.
Photographs in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim watching the black-and-white Hwasong-17 -- dubbed a "monster missile" by analysts -- blast off into the sky.
Some of the images showed him watching the launch with his daughter -- never named by state media but identified as his second child Ju Ae by South Korean intelligence.
State media also released images showing the Earth from space, purportedly taken by a camera mounted on the ICBM.
KCNA said the launch "confirmed the war readiness of the ICBM unit", adding that it "had no negative impact on the security" of neighbouring countries.
South Korea had previously said the missile was fired on a lofted trajectory -- up instead of out, typically done to avoid overflying neighbouring countries.
Last year, North Korea declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear power, and Kim recently called for an "exponential" increase in weapons production, including tactical nukes.
Overseeing the Thursday launch, Kim said North Korea would "react to nuclear weapons with nukes" and called for "irreversibly bolstering up the nuclear war deterrent", according to KCNA.
He also highlighted the country's "rapid response posture... to cope with any armed conflict and war", KCNA said.
ICBM threat
In theory, the Hwasong-17 ICBM can reach the continental United States, and with this latest launch, North Korea is trying to emphasise the advanced level of its weaponry, analysts said.
"With the photos of the Earth, Pyongyang seems to be trying to show that it can accurately hit any target the regime wants with its ICBM," Cheong Seong-chang, a senior fellow at the Sejong Institute, told AFP.
The next step will likely be North Korea firing the missile "at a normal angle", he said, which would demonstrate it can survive reentry into the atmosphere.
The Thursday launch -- Pyongyang's third show of force this week -- came as Tokyo and Seoul sought to thaw long-frozen ties to counter an increasingly aggressive North Korea.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol flew to Japan Thursday to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the first such summit in 12 years.
North Korea fired two cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday, followed by two short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday, as South Korea and the United States staged major military drills.
The allies have ramped up defence cooperation in the face of growing military and nuclear threats from North Korea, which has conducted a series of increasingly provocative banned weapons tests in recent months.
"The fact (that) North Korea has almost normalised ICBM tests over the last year is a concern," Joseph Dempsey, a researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told AFP.
Soo Kim, a former CIA Korea analyst, said that Kim's regime "has essentially desensitised the international community to its weapons tests," she told AFP.
"We've reached a point where an ICBM test draws no greater attention than a short-range missile test," she said.
"We'll continue to see North Korea advancing and expanding its suite of weapons capabilities in the days to come."

The BBC documentary charts the growing divide between the Russian leader and the West in the years before the invasion of Ukraine.
It also features Zelensky reflecting on his thwarted ambitions to join NATO prior to Russia's attack.
"If you know that tomorrow Russia will occupy Ukraine, why don't you give me something today I can stop it with?" he says.

Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen sharply this year as Pyongyang has carried out an unprecedented blitz of weapons tests, including the launch of its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile ever last month.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected two ballistic missiles that had been fired from the Tongchang-ri area in North Pyongan province.
The missiles were fired from 11:13 am (0213 GMT) to 12:05 pm into the East Sea, it said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.
"Our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance while closely cooperating with the United States and maintaining a full readiness posture," the JCS added in a statement.
The missiles flew about 500 kilometres and reached a maximum altitude of around 550 kilometres, according to Japan's defence ministry.
"It threatens the peace and security of our country, this region, and the international community, and it is absolutely unacceptable," said senior vice defence minister Toshiro Ino.
Sunday's launch came days after North Korea tested a "high-thrust solid-fuel motor", with state media describing it as an important test "for the development of another new-type strategic weapon system".

Earlier on Thursday, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui warned that a recent US-South Korea-Japan summit accord on the North would leave tensions on the Korean Peninsula &ldquo;more unpredictable.&rdquo; Choe's statement was North Korea's first official response to US President Joe Biden's trilateral summit with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts on the sidelines of a regional gathering Sunday in Cambodia.
In their joint statement, the three leaders strongly condemned North Korea's recent missile tests and agreed to work together to strengthen deterrence, while Biden reaffirmed the US commitment to defend South Korea and Japan with a full range of capabilities, including its nuclear arms.
&ldquo;The keener the US is on the bolstered offer of extended deterrence' to its allies and the more they intensify provocative and bluffing military activities on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, the fiercer (North Korea's) military counteraction will be, in direct proportion to it,&rdquo; Choe said. &ldquo;It will pose a more serious, realistic and inevitable threat to the US and its vassal forces.&rdquo; Choe didn't say what steps North Korea could take but said that &ldquo;the US will be well aware that it is gambling, for which it will certainly regret.&rdquo; South Korea's Defence Ministry responded later on Thursday that the purpose of the trilateral summit was to coordinate a joint response to curb and deter advancing nuclear and missile threats by North Korea.
Spokesperson Moon Hong Sik told reporters that security cooperation among Seoul, Washington and Tokyo was contributing to solidifying a US extended deterrence to its allies.
North Korea has steadfastly maintained its recent weapons testing activities are legitimate military counteractions to US-South Korean military drills, which it views as a practice to launch attacks on the North. Washington and Seoul have said their exercises are defensive in nature.
In recent months, South Korean and US troops have expanded their regular exercises and resumed trilateral training with Japan in response to North Korea's push to enlarge its nuclear and missile arsenals.
Those drills involved a US aircraft carrier and US B-1B supersonic bombers for the first time since 2017.
In the past several years, annual military training between Seoul and Washington had been scaled back or cancelled to support now-dormant diplomacy with North Korea and guard against the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her Thursday statement, Choe said &ldquo;the US and its followers staged large-scale war drills for aggression one after another, but they failed to contain North Korea's overwhelming counteraction.&rdquo; There have been concerns that North Korea might conduct its first nuclear test in five years as its next major step toward bolstering its military capability against the United States and its allies.
US and South Korean officials say North Korea has finished preparations to conduct a nuclear test explosion in its remote testing facility in the northeast.
Some experts say the test, if made, would be meant to develop nuclear warheads to be placed on short-range missiles capable of hitting key targets in South Korea, such as US military bases.
They say North Korea would ultimately aim to use its boosted arsenal as a leverage to pressure the United States into making concessions in future negotiations and recognise it as a nuclear state.
Thursday's launch came a day after members the Group of 20 leading economies ended their summit in Indonesia.
The summit was largely overshadowed with other issues like Russia's war on Ukraine. But Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol used their bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping to raise the issue of North Korea.
The two had a trilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and discussed North Korea before coming to Indonesia for the G-20 summit.
In their respective bilateral talks with Xi, Biden noted all members of the international community have an interest in encouraging North Korea to act responsibly, while Yoon called for China to play a more active, constructive role in addressing the North Korean nuclear threats.
China, the North's last major ally and biggest source of aid, is suspected of avoiding fully enforcing United Nations sanctions on North Korea and shipping clandestine assistance to the North to help its impoverished neighbour stay afloat and continue to serve as a bulwark against US influences on the Korean Peninsula.

The North's announcement underscored leader Kim Jong Un's determination not to back down in the face of his rivals' push to expand their military exercises. But some experts say Kim also used their drills as an excuse to modernise his nuclear arsenal and increase his leverage in future dealings with Washington and Seoul.

The North's military statement didn't explicitly mention a reported launch on Thursday of an intercontinental ballistic missile aimed at hitting the US mainland, though its main newspaper published a photo of an ICBM-like missile as one of the weapons mobilised during last week's testing activities.

The allies were initially supposed to run the drills for five days ending on Friday, but extended the training by another day in reaction to the North's missile tests.
On Saturday, the final day of the air force exercises, the United States flew two B-1B supersonic bombers over South Korea in a display of strength against North Korea, the aircraft's first such flyover since December 2017.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the participation of the B-1Bs in the joint drills demonstrated the allies' readiness to sternly respond to North Korean provocations and the US commitment to defend its ally with the full range of its military capabilities, including nuclear.
After their annual meeting on Thursday in Washington, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and South Korean Defence Minister Lee Jong-Sup issued a joint statement strongly condemning the North's recent launches and carrying Austin's warning that any nuclear attacks against the United States or its allies and partners &ldquo;is unacceptable and will result in the end of the Kim regime.&rdquo; South Korea's military has previously warned the North that using its nuclear weapons would put it on a &ldquo;path of self-destruction.&rdquo; Both defence chiefs also agreed on the need to enhance combined exercises and training events to strengthen readiness against North Korean nuclear and missile threats.
Even before the &ldquo;Vigilant Storm&rdquo; drills, North Korea test-launched a slew of missiles in what it called simulated nuclear attacks on US and South Korean targets in protests of its rivals' other sets of military exercises that involved a US aircraft for the first time in five years. In September, North Korea also adopted a new law authorising the preemptive use of its nuclear weapons in a broad range of situations.
South Korean and US officials have steadfastly maintained their drills are defensive in nature and that they have no intentions of invading the North.
US and South Korean militaries have been expanding their regular military drills since the May inauguration of conservative South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has promised to take a tougher stance on North Korean provocations. Some of the allies' drills had been previously downsized or cancelled to support now-stalled diplomacy on North Korea's nuclear program or to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.
For months, South Korean and US officials have said North Korea has completed preparations to conduct its first nuclear test in five years. On Monday, South Korean Unification Minister Kwon Youngse told lawmakers that North Korea could carry out the nuclear test at any time but there were still no signs that such a test explosion was imminent.

Japanese authorities have issued a 'J-alert' to residents in northeastern areas to vacate the buildings. The J-Alert warning system was activated for Hokkaido, Aomori Prefecture and Tokyo&rsquo;s Izu and Ogasawara islands.
Under the J-Alert system, which was developed in 2007, messages are sent in times of national emergencies such as earthquakes, terrorist attacks and certain missile launches.
Warnings are automatically sent to municipalities through satellites and administrative radio networks, and then broadcast to residents through sirens and community FM radios. Smartphone users also get alerts through phone carriers.
Upon receiving a J-Alert message, people are urged to take shelter either inside buildings or underground, as was the case with Tuesday&rsquo;s launch. When there&rsquo;s no building nearby, people are advised to hide behind objects or lie on the ground while protecting their heads. If people are indoors, they are advised to stay away from windows.
The alerts also urge people not to approach debris or objects that may have fallen in the event of a missile strike or overflight.
Following the launch, the locals of the said region were asked to move to safer locations, while public transport such as train services were also suspended in the susceptible areas. The Japanese prime minister's office said at least one missile fired from North Korea flew over Japan and was believed to have landed into the Pacific Ocean.
The launch is seen as a possible response to military drills between South Korea and Unites States, which Pyongyang views as an invasion demonstration.
The missiles fired during the past four rounds of launches were short-range and fell in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Those missiles are capable of hitting targets in South Korea. The latest launch is the fifth round of weapons test by North Korea in the past 10 days.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry said the induction of these dual-role capable missiles is going to "significantly enhance" the operational capability of Indian Navy fleet assets.
BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (BAPL) is a joint venture between India and Russia, making crucial contribution to augment the new generation surface-to-surface missiles (SSMs) with enhanced range and dual role capability for land as well as anti-ship attacks, it said.  "Providing further impetus to Aatmanirbharta in defence production, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) signed a contract today with M/s BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (BAPL) for acquisition of additional dual-role capable Surface to Surface BrahMos missiles at an overall approximate cost of Rs 1,700 Crore under 'Buy-Indian Category'," the statement said. 
This contract is going to give further boost to indigenous production of critical weapon system and ammunition with active participation of indigenous industry, it added.

This incident occurred in March 2022, and 5 months later, India has completed an investigation, and taken action. But what is more interesting about the entire episode, is Pakistan's action and reaction.
The incident has exposed the Pakistani military's dependence on Chinese weapons, and how those weapons might be ineffective against India's deadly arsenal.
First, let's take a look at what happened on 9 March 2022.
At 6:43 pm local time, Pakistan Air Force claimed to have detected a 'supersonic flying object' in Indian airspace. The missile was 104 km from the border, and at an altitude of 40,000 feet. The projectile originated at a point near Sirsa, Haryana, according to Pakistan.
Subsequently, the missile flew at a speed of Mach 2.5 to 3 towards Rajasthan. It appeared to be headed towards the Mahajan field firing range. After 70-80 km, Pakistan said that the missile turned towards it. The rogue BrahMos entered Pakistani airspace from Suratgarh, Rajasthan.
Islamabad claimed that the missile flew in its airspace for 3 minutes, 44 seconds. In this time, the BrahMos covered 124 km. At 6:50 pm, the missile fell near Mia Channu city. The unarmed missile's impact damaged some civilian property in the area, but no casualties occurred.
Many countries have air defence systems which would shoot down something like a missile entering its airspace. Essentially, a missile hunting down another missile. Israel has the famous Iron Dome. India is buying the Russian S-400 system. Pakistan also claims to have such aerial shields.
One of these is the HQ-16 LOMADS, or Low to Medium Altitude Air Defence System. It is made by China, and was inducted into Pakistani forces in 2017. Its effective range is claimed to be 3.5-18 km against cruise missiles, like BrahMos. It can intercept low-flying targets at up to 40 km. The HQ-16 is claimed to have the capability to hit targets at 400 to 10,000 metre-altitude. Chinese commentators have called it a BrahMos deterrent.
The second is the HQ-9 HIMADS, or High to Medium Altitude Air Defence System. This is also made by China, and was inducted into Pakistani forces in 2021. It is claimed to have the capability to intercept multiple aerial targets like cruise missiles, and aircraft. Pakistan military claims it can also intercept beyond-visual-range, or BVR, weapons at a range of 100 km. The HQ-9 has a single-shot kill probability, along with a 120-km detection range, and 90-km tracking range.
But when the BrahMos missile flew over 100 km inside Pakistani territory, these defence systems were conspicuously absent. Why wasn't the rogue missile shot down?
One possibility is that the Pakistani military was caught off-guard and unprepared. Another reason could be that the Pakistani missile defence systems simply lacked the capability to intercept the BrahMos. A third possibility could be that a missile defence system was not in range of the rogue missile. Finally, Islamabad - the political capital - and Rawalpindi - the military power-centre - did not want the situation to escalate.
Whatever the reason, the incident has again proven, even if accidentally, that the BrahMos is a deadly weapon. Here is why the missile made by India and Russia is special.

The first stage takes the missile to supersonic speed - this means it flies faster than the speed of sound. The attack, the BrahMos carries an explosive warhead weighing 200 to 300 kg. It has a 290 km range, and flies at supersonic speeds throughout. The missile's cruising altitude is up to 15 km, and near the target it flies as low as 10 m.
What makes the BrahMos special is that firstly, it is almost impossible to intercept, with a low radar signature. High speed means shorter flight time, which further means less time for the target to react. The versatile missile can be launched from land, sea, and air. Also, high kinetic energy increases its destructive power.
The BrahMos worries Pakistan because its capital Islamabad is within reach of the missile launched from a north Indian base, as per experts. The incident has predictably caused a fresh flashpoint between India and Pakistan.
Following the incident, the Indian government had expressed regret, and ordered a Court of Inquiry to probe the accidental missile launch. Bullets that expand or flatten inside the target's body are banned under the Hague Declaration of 1899. Cluster munitions are prohibited by the Convention on Cluster Munitions, 2008. Incendiary weapons are banned by Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, 1980. Explosive remnants of war are controlled through the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.
Mines, booby traps, other devices are banned by the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, and the Convention on Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines. Blinding laser weapons are prohibited under the Conventional Weapons Convention, and poisoned weapons are banned by the Hague Regulations of 1907. Chemical weapons are prohibited under the Geneva Protocol of 1925, and the Convention on Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, 1993. Similarly, biological weapons are banned by the Geneva Protocol, and the Convention on Prohibition of Biological Weapons, 1972.
To see whether America's Ninja missile falls under any of these, let's take a look at its features first.
The Ninja missile is officially the Hellfire R9X and it doesn't contain explosives, but has sharp blades. It is designed to slice and shred its targets. 6 razor-sharp blades are fitted inside the missile's fuselage. They pop out seconds before the missile makes impact, shredding anything in their path. The R9X is informally called 'Ninja Bomb' and 'Flying Ginsu' - a reference to knives sold in the US in the 1970s and 1980s.
So, does the R9X violate international law?
International treaties ban weapons that injure their targets using fragments which cannot be detected in the body through X-rays. It is unclear if the R9X's blades detach, break, and get embedded in the target's body, and whether they can evade X-rays. Another type of illegal weapons are projectiles which explode upon impact, but the Ninja missile does not contain explosives. A sinister weapon prohibited under international law is cluster munitions.
These disperse small bomblets over a wide area, but the R9X doesn't fall in this category as it does not have submunitions. Bullets which flatten or expand easily in targets' bodies are also banned, but the R9X has no known projectiles. Another banned category is incendiary weapons used to set fire to non-military objects or cause injury to civilians. But America's Hellfire R9X missile does not involve any fire-causing chemical reaction.
America has never publicly revealed details about the Ninja missile, despite apparently having used it on multiple occasions. What's known about the R9X has come out through source-based news stories. The missile is used sparingly, and against top enemies of the United States.
These include Ayman al-Zawahiri, the chief of al-Qaeda who was killed in July 2022 in Afghanistan's Kabul. Before him, it was Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian military general killed in Iraq's Baghdad in January 2020. A year earlier, al-Qaeda operative Jamal al-Badawi was killed in Yemen's Sanaa. In March 2017, the Ninja missile was used the first time against al-Qaeda commander Abu al-Khayr al-Masri in Syria's Idlib.
The Hellfire R9X does not appear to be illegal. But in case a country uses banned weapons, then the International Criminal Court at The Hague can hold a trial. Alleged violations can also be tried in national courts.
Although international treaties cover many conventional weapons, the world now needs to get together and regulate a new class of dangerous weapons - autonomous arms with artificial intelligence.

Bullets that expand or flatten inside the target's body are banned under the Hague Declaration of 1899. Cluster munitions are prohibited by the Convention on Cluster Munitions, 2008. Incendiary weapons are banned by Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, 1980. Explosive remnants of war are controlled through the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.
Mines, booby traps, other devices are banned by the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, and the Convention on Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines. Blinding laser weapons are prohibited under the Conventional Weapons Convention, and poisoned weapons are banned by the Hague Regulations of 1907. Chemical weapons are prohibited under the Geneva Protocol of 1925, and the Convention on Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, 1993. Similarly, biological weapons are banned by the Geneva Protocol, and the Convention on Prohibition of Biological Weapons, 1972.
To see whether America's Ninja missile falls under any of these, let's take a look at its features first.
The Ninja missile is officially the Hellfire R9X and it doesn't contain explosives, but has sharp blades. It is designed to slice and shred its targets. 6 razor-sharp blades are fitted inside the missile's fuselage. They pop out seconds before the missile makes impact, shredding anything in their path. The R9X is informally called 'Ninja Bomb' and 'Flying Ginsu' - a reference to knives sold in the US in the 1970s and 1980s.
So, does the R9X violate international law?
International treaties ban weapons that injure their targets using fragments which cannot be detected in the body through X-rays. It is unclear if the R9X's blades detach, break, and get embedded in the target's body, and whether they can evade X-rays. Another type of illegal weapons are projectiles which explode upon impact, but the Ninja missile does not contain explosives. A sinister weapon prohibited under international law is cluster munitions.
These disperse small bomblets over a wide area, but the R9X doesn't fall in this category as it does not have submunitions. Bullets which flatten or expand easily in targets' bodies are also banned, but the R9X has no known projectiles. Another banned category is incendiary weapons used to set fire to non-military objects or cause injury to civilians. But America's Hellfire R9X missile does not involve any fire-causing chemical reaction.
America has never publicly revealed details about the Ninja missile, despite apparently having used it on multiple occasions. What's known about the R9X has come out through source-based news stories. The missile is used sparingly, and against top enemies of the United States.
These include Ayman al-Zawahiri, the chief of al-Qaeda who was killed in July 2022 in Afghanistan's Kabul. Before him, it was Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian military general killed in Iraq's Baghdad in January 2020. A year earlier, al-Qaeda operative Jamal al-Badawi was killed in Yemen's Sanaa. In March 2017, the Ninja missile was used the first time against al-Qaeda commander Abu al-Khayr al-Masri in Syria's Idlib.
The Hellfire R9X does not appear to be illegal. But in case a country uses banned weapons, then the International Criminal Court at The Hague can hold a trial. Alleged violations can also be tried in national courts.
Although international treaties cover many conventional weapons, the world now needs to get together and regulate a new class of dangerous weapons - autonomous arms with artificial intelligence.

India on Thursday successfully test-fired indigenously developed laser-guided anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) at a military installation in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar.
The defence ministry said the missiles destroyed the targets with precision at two different ranges.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the maker of the ATGMs, and the Indian Army on the successful trial of the weapon.
"Indigenously developed laser-Guided anti-tank guided missiles were successfully test-fired from Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun by the DRDO and Indian Army," the ministry said.
The test firing of the missiles was carried out at KK Ranges in Ahmednagar with support from Armoured Corps Centre and School.
"The missiles hit with precision and successfully destroyed the targets at two different ranges. Telemetry systems have recorded the satisfactory flight performance of the missiles," the defence ministry said.
"The all-indigenous laser guided ATGM employs a tandem High explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat explosive reactive armour (ERA) protected armoured vehicles," it said.
The ATGM has been developed with multi-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from 120 mm rifled gun of MBT Arjun.
DRDO Chairman G Satheesh Reddy also congratulated the teams associated with the test firing of ATGMs.

The American government said that al-Zawahiri's family was inside the house, but did not suffer any harm. Nor were any other civilians injured in the operation.

But how is this possible? How could a missile cause no damage, except kill its target - one person?
The well-known AGM-114 Hellfire missiles are famous for their destructive firepower. They began as anti-tank weapons in the 1980s, but after the 9/11 attacks, Hellfires started being used as drone weapons to kill individuals.
But to kill al-Zawahiri, USA is believed to have used a special variant of the Hellfire - the R9X. The R9X does not contain explosives, but instead houses sharp blades. The R9X is designed to slice and shred its targets.
There are 6 razor-sharp blades fitted inside the missile fuselage. They pop out seconds before the missile makes impact. These sharp blades shred anything in the missile's path. Because of this, the R9X is informally called the 'Flying Ginsu' - a reference to knives sold in the 1970s and 1980s - and also 'Ninja Bomb'.
One of the hardest parts of using the R9X effectively is acquiring exact information about the target's location and the situation around them. But since chances of civilian casualties are reduced, it also provides more opportunities to attack.
The R9X reportedly had another predecessor without explosives. That missile had been designed to hit the target with over 100 pounds of weight thus killing without a blast. It could punch through cars and roofs.
The R9X 'Ninja Bomb' is believed to have felled many high-profile enemies of America. The R9X's first use is believed to have been against al-Qaeda commander Abu al-Khayr al-Masri who was killed in Syria's Idlib in March 2017. al-Masri targeted when he was travelling in a car. Like al-Zawahiri, no explosion occurred, but the car ended up with a huge hole in the roof, as per reports. All of the car's passengers had been shredded to death, but the front and rear of al-Masri's vehicle had remained intact.
The second probable use of the R9X took place against another al-Qaeda terrorist Jamal al-Badawi who was killed near Yemen's Sanaa in January 2019. An airstrike hit al-Badawi when he was alone in a vehicle. He was killed for his role in the bombing of American warship USS Cole. The attack in the year 2000 had killed 17 soldiers at a Yemeni port.
Another instance of the R9X's use is believed to have been a deadly attack on a top Iranian military commander. General Qassem Soleimani, who was head of Iran's elite Quds Force, was killed at the Baghdad airport in January 2020. A drone strike at his convoy had also killed leaders of Iran-backed militias in the region.
Reports say that the R9X 'Ninja Bomb' had been part of Plan B to kill 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. But the final operation was carried out on the ground by US Special Forces.
So what motivated America to develop a sword missile?
The Hellfire's R9X variant was reportedly designed during Barack Obama's tenure as US President. The objective behind the project was to avoid civilian deaths and reduce collateral damage in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Yemen etc.
The need for such a weapon was also felt as terrorists were beginning to escape airstrikes by hiding among women and children. The R9X missile also solved the "right seat, left seat" problem, according to officials quoted by the Wall Street Journal. This means that the missile can theoretically kill the passenger in a car without hurting the driver - an allusion to collateral damage.
al-Zawahiri has now joined a long list of enemies killed by America. But why did the US want to get rid of him?
al-Zawahiri played a big role in the 9/11 terror attacks, and was also blamed for the 1998 bombings at US embassies in Tanzania, and Kenya. US President Joe Biden called al-Zawahiri's death a moment of justice for almost 3,000 terror victims and their families.
al-Zawahiri became the leader of al-Qaeda after bin Laden's death. The US had placed a $25 million bounty on al-Zawahiri's head. He was born in 1951 in a prominent Egyptian family, and had been an eye surgeon when he was young.
This operation by the US military has shown that it may have pulled troops out of Afghanistan, but intends to put pressure on the Taliban to stop sheltering mass murderers.

Hypersonic glide vehicles are launched from rockets before gliding to hit their target. The other type is a hypersonic cruise missile which has an engine. These scramjet engines power hypersonic missiles to their targets at unbelievable speeds.

Hypersonic weapons were recently in news when Russia claimed to have used its Kinzhal missile for the first time in conflict. The Kinzhal, which means 'dagger' in Russia, can reportedly fly at up to ten times the speed of sound, and can carry a 480-kg nuclear payload.
China has also reportedly developed hypersonic weapons. In a test-firing in August 2021, the Chinese hypersonic missile circumnavigated the globe before landing near its target.
USA, Japan, Germany, France, and Australia are also reportedly developing such weapons.
