The memorial for Dr. Manmohan Singh will be built at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal alongside other leaders, following his family's formal consent.

In a recent development at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal near Delhi's Raj Ghat, the family of the late Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has provided written consent for a memorial to be constructed in his honor.
This memorial is to be situated on a 900 sq m plot within the samadhi complex.
Following a site visit by Singh's family, including his daughters Upinder and Daman Singh and their spouses, Gursharan Kaur, Dr. Singh's widow, reportedly sent a formal acceptance letter to the government.
Upinder Singh confirmed this to The Indian Express, mentioning that a formal acceptance has indeed been dispatched.
At present, only two vacant plots remain at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal. Earlier this year, one was offered to the family of former President Pranab Mukherjee.
The Singh family was offered the other plot, which is centrally located within the complex.
The process now involves establishing a Trust to which the land will be allotted. The family may apply for a construction grant of up to Rs 25 lakh for the memorial. The samadhi complex, which comprises nine sites, follows a unified architectural design for its cenotaphs.
The designated plot for Dr. Singh's memorial is flanked by the samadhis of notable figures, including former Prime Ministers and Presidents, such as Chandra Shekhar, R Venkataraman, Giani Zail Singh, and Pranab Mukherjee.

An RTI (Right to Information) response has revealed that neither current Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh used government funds for Diwali celebrations during their time in office.
The RTI inquiry was filed in November 2024 by Pune-based activist Prafful Sarda, who requested information regarding the annual Diwali festival expenditures by both Prime Ministers. Dr. Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, was specifically mentioned in the query alongside PM Modi.
In its response, the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office (PMO) clarified on January 3 that no public funds were allocated for personal expenses of either leader. "Personal expenses of the prime minister are not borne on government accounts. The PMO does not spend any money on the PM's personal expenses," said Parvesh Kumar, Under Secretary and Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) at the PMO.
This clarification comes amid controversy surrounding Prime Minister Modi&rsquo;s gift of a 7.5-carat diamond to US First Lady Jill Biden during his 2023 visit. The gift sparked international debate when US authorities valued the diamond at USD 20,000. However, India&rsquo;s Ministry of External Affairs later clarified that the actual value was far lower, estimating it to be under Rs 2 lakh, as it was lab-grown.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually laid the foundation stones for two new Delhi University campuses and a college named after BJP ideologue Veer Savarkar.
The project, with an investment of over Rs 600 crore, aims to boost educational opportunities and modernise facilities.
The foundation-laying ceremony was held at Ashok Vihar where the prime minister also launched a slew of other infra projects for the national capital.
The East campus at Surajmal Vihar and the West campus at Dwarka Sector 22 are being added to the existing North and South campuses as part of DU's efforts to expand its presence across the city.
The East Campus, spanning 15.25 acres, is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 373 crore. It will offer LLB, LLM and an integrated five-year LLB programme, alongside other multidisciplinary courses.
The campus will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including 60 classrooms, 10 tutorial rooms, six moot courts, four computer labs, two cafeterias and two common rooms, spread across a built-up area of 59,618 square metres.
The West Campus, being built at Rs 107 crore, will be a new academic block in the first phase. Covering 19,434.28 square metres, it will have 42 classrooms, two moot courts, a digital library, conference rooms, seminar halls and separate common rooms for boys and girls.
In addition to the campuses, Modi laid the foundation stone for Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh, just a five-minute walk from the West Campus.
The college, with a built-up area of 18,816.56 square metres and an estimated cost of Rs 140 crore, will offer modern facilities, including 24 classrooms, eight tutorial rooms, 40 faculty rooms, department libraries, conference rooms and a canteen.

The Congress party's student wing, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), has opposed the move, urging that the college be named after the late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away last week. In a letter to PM Modi, the NSUI highlighted Singh&rsquo;s immense contributions to education, citing his role in establishing institutions such as IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and introducing the Central Universities Act. On the other hand, Congress MPs Naseer Hussain and Sukhjinder Randhawa criticized the BJP for honoring someone like Savarkar, who, according to them, had written mercy petitions to the British during colonial rule. Randhawa remarked that the PM should reconsider the decision, given Savarkar&rsquo;s past actions. "He lived a very simple life. If I look at the journey of his life, it was so simple. Even if someone talked ill about him, he never reverted in the same manner. In politics, it's the toughest thing to avoid," Dosanjh remarked.
He also compared the behavior of politicians in India to that of children, emphasizing that Singh&rsquo;s ability to stay calm was something everyone could learn from.
"Have you ever seen those Lok Sabha sessions? Our politicians fight as if they are nursery kids... But something that we should learn from Dr Manmohan Singh ji is that he never responded back in the same manner," he added.
Singh, who was credited with steering India through significant economic reforms, passed away at the age of 92. Dosanjh also quoted a line often said by Singh, emphasizing the power of silence.
"He would often say 'Hazaaron jawabon se meri khamoshi acchi, na jaane kitne sawalon ki aabroo dhak leti hai' ('My silence is better than a thousand answers, it has saved the grace of many questions') and it is something the youth needs to learn from him, even I do. We should focus on our goals even if people speak worst about us and try to distract us," Dosanjh shared.
He concluded by bowing his head in respect to the man who dedicated his life to serving his country.
&ldquo;Today, I bow my head in front of a man who loved his country and spent his life serving it,&rdquo; Dosanjh said.
The singer is set to perform next in Ludhiana on December 31 as part of his &ldquo;Dil-Luminati India Tour.&rdquo;

It was during Singh's second term that India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the national capital. It was the first international multi-sport extravaganza to be held in the country after the 1982 Asian Games, also hosted by Delhi.
He had also inaugurated the National Football League's 11th edition in Kolkata back in 2005 when late Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi was heading the All India Football Federation.

"At 8 am tomorrow, December 28, his mortal remains will be taken to the AICC headquarters where the public and Congress workers will have the opportunity to offer their tributes between 8.30 am and 9.30 am," Venugopal said.
"Dr Singh's final journey to the heavenly abode will commence from the AICC HQ to the cremation ground at 9.30 am tomorrow," he said.

Sources said his cremation is likely to take place on Saturday as the family is waiting for one of his daughters to arrive from the United States.

Draped in tricolour, the body of the former prime Minister was placed in a flower-bedecked casket at his residence, where leaders cutting across party lines paid their last respects to the departed leader.

Aiyar had supported the budget, contending that it conformed to Rajiv Gandhi&rsquo;s beliefs on what needed to be done to stave off the financial crisis.
Bowing to pressure from the party, Singh had agreed to lower the 40 per cent increase in fertilser prices to 30 per cent, but had left the hike in LPG and petrol prices untouched.
The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs met twice on August 4 and 5, 1991 to decide on the statement Singh would make in the Lok Sabha on August 6.
&ldquo;The statement dropped the idea of a roll-back which had been demanded over the past few days, but now spoke of protecting the interests of small and marginal farmers,&rdquo; the book states.
&ldquo;Both sides had won. The party had forced a rethink, but the fundamentals of what the government wanted &mdash; the decontrol of prices of fertilisers other than urea and an increase in urea prices &mdash; had been preserved,&rdquo; Ramesh recounts.

His delicate health notwithstanding, the politician former prime minister Manmohan Singh came out sharply during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when he accused his successor Narendra Modi of lowering the dignity of public discourse and the gravity of the office of the prime minister by delivering "hateful speeches" during the poll campaign.
In an appeal to voters in Punjab ahead of the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1, Singh had asserted that only the Congress could ensure a growth-oriented progressive future where democracy and the Constitution would be safeguarded.
The senior Congress leader had also hit out at the BJP government for imposing an "ill-conceived" Agnipath scheme, which he termed as a threat to national security.
"The BJP thinks that the value of patriotism, bravery and service is only four years. This shows their fake nationalism," he had said in what is considered his last letter to voters of Punjab.
The Congress had released Singh's letter to the media on May 30.
Singh had said those who trained for regular recruitment were woefully betrayed by the Modi regime.
He had said, "The youth of Punjab, the son of the farmer, who dreams of serving the motherland through the Armed Forces, is now thinking twice about getting recruited only for a four-year stint. The Agniveer scheme endangers national security. The Congress party has therefore promised to abolish the Agniveer scheme."
Mounting an attack on Modi, he had said, "I have been keenly following the political discourse during this election campaign. Modi ji has indulged in the most vicious form of hate speeches, which are purely divisive in nature. Modi ji is the first prime minister to lower the dignity of public discourse, and thereby the gravity of the office of the prime minister."
"No prime minister in the past has uttered such hateful, unparliamentary and coarse terms, meant to target either a specific section of the society or the opposition. He has also attributed some false statements to me. I have never in my life singled out one community from the other. That is the sole copyright of the BJP," the former prime minister had said.
"People of India are seeing through all of this. This narrative of dehumanisation has now reached its peak. It is now our duty to save our beloved nation from these forces of discord," Singh had said.
He had appealed to the voters to give love, peace, fraternity and harmony a chance in India and urged the voters in Punjab to vote for development and inclusive progress.
"I appeal to all the young minds to exercise caution and vote for a brighter future. Only Congress can ensure a growth-oriented progressive future, where democracy and the Constitution shall be safeguarded," Singh had said.
Modi had accused Singh of saying that Muslims had the first right to the country's resources.
"This narrative of dehumanisation has now reached its peak. It is now our duty to save our beloved nation from these forces of discord," Singh had said in the letter.
The former prime minister had noted that India was standing at a crucial juncture and, in the last phase of voting, "we have one final chance to ensure that democracy and our Constitution is protected from the repeated assaults of a despotic regime, trying to unleash dictatorship in India".
Lauding Punjabis as warriors, he had said they were known for their spirit of sacrifice indomitable courage and innate belief in the democratic ethos of inclusiveness, harmony, amity and brotherhood could protect our great nation.
"In the past 10 years, the BJP government has left no stone unturned in castigating Punjab, Punjabis and Punjabiyat. 750 farmers, mostly belonging to Punjab, were martyred while incessantly waiting at Delhi borders, for months together. As if the lathis and the rubber bullets were not enough, none less than the prime minister verbally assaulted our farmers by calling them 'andolanjeevis' and 'parjeevi (parasites)' on the floor of Parliament. Their only demand was the withdrawal of the three farm laws imposed on them without consulting them," he had said.
"Unprecedented unemployment and unbridled inflation have greatly widened inequality, which is now at a 100-year high. While the Congress-UPA, despite challenges, increased the purchasing power of our people, the misrule of the BJP government has resulted in depletion of household savings to a historic 47-year low," he had added.
Singh, the architect of India's economic reforms and a consensus builder in the rough world of politics, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, late on Thursday. He was 92.

&ldquo;The government of India announces with profound sorrow the death of Manmohan Singh, former prime minister of India on December 26, 2024, at AIIMS hospital in New Delhi,&rdquo; the communication said. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the home ministry said, it has been decided that a seven-day state mourning will be observed throughout India from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025.
During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning.
The national flag will also fly half-mast on the day of the funeral in all Indian missions and high commissions abroad, the home ministry said.

In a letter addressed to the citizens ahead of the last phase of the Lok Sabha election in Punjab, Singh in a veiled reference to the speech said that he had &ldquo;never distinguished one community from another&rdquo;.
In the three-page letter, Singh said that Modi is the first prime minister to have reduced the dignity of the office, by engaging in vile, unparliamentary, and low-level language to target a particular section or opposition.
He said, "I have been watching the political discussion very carefully during this election campaign. Modiji has engaged in vile hate speeches, which are downright divisive. Modi ji is the first Prime Minister who has reduced the dignity of office, and with it the seriousness of the Prime Minister&rsquo;s office. No previous Prime Minister used such vile, unparliamentary and low-level language to target a particular section or opposition. They have also given me some wrong statements. I have never in my life distinguished one community from another. This is the special right and habit of BJP.&rdquo;
He urged the voters of Punjab to vote to save democracy and the Constitution.
&nbsp;&ldquo;I appeal to every voter of Punjab to vote for development and coordinated progress. I urge all young people to vote carefully, and to vote for the future. Only Congress can guarantee a development-led progressive future, where democracy and the Constitution will be protected.&rdquo;
Modi, in his every election rally had been repeatedly claiming that Congress aims to redistribute wealth from Hindus, and give to Hindus.

A day after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a meeting to explain its manifesto, the BJP shared a 2009 video of the former prime minister to counter Congress.
In the video, Singh was heard saying, "Minorities, particularly Muslim minorities, if they are poor, have prior claim to the resources of the nation."&nbsp;
In his two-page letter, he told the prime minister that he is being misinformed by his advisors about things that are not even written in the 'Nyay Patra' -- the Congress' manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections.
The letter comes after the prime minister attacked the Congress over its manifesto, alleging that the party aims to "redistribute the wealth" of people and give it away to "infiltrators".
Modi also accused the Congress of snatching women's "mangalsutra".
In his letter, Kharge said the Congress' 'Nyay Patra' aims at providing "nyay (justice)" to the youngsters, women, farmers, labourers and marginalised people across all castes and communities.
"It has become your habit to seize on a few words taken out of context and create a communal divide. You are lowering the dignity of the chair by speaking in this manner," he said.
"You are being misinformed by your advisors about things that are not even written in our manifesto. I would be more than happy to meet you in person to explain our 'Nyay Patra' so that, as prime minister of the country, you don't make any statements that are false," he added.
The Congress chief also said he is neither shocked nor surprised by the language used by the prime minister in his recent speeches.
"It was expected that you and other leaders from your party would start speaking in this manner after you saw the dismal performance of the BJP in the first phase of the elections," Kharge said in the letter.
