In a worrying case of suspected mass food poisoning, more than 130 students fell sick in Karnataka's Mangaluru on the night of 6 February 2023.
137 nursing and paramedical students staying at a private hostel fell sick after having dinner, police said. They complained of stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhoea, and were admitted to hospitals.
Consumption of contaminated water may have led to the health scare, according to sources quoted by news agency PTI. The condition of some of the students is stated to be serious.
"We came to know that from 2 am, around 137 students complained of food poisoning, stomach ache, diarrhoea, and vomiting. The students were admitted to different hospitals. We're trying to find out the reason," Mangaluru Police Commissioner was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

A little-known outfit Islamic Resistance Council (IRC) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the Mangaluru blast on November 19, saying one of its 'Mujahid brother Mohammed Shariq' attempted to attack a 'Hindutva Temple in Kadri.' While top police officers remained tight-lipped, police sources said they are verifying the origin of this information.
"We the Islamic Resistance Council (IRC) would like to convey the message: One of our Mujahid brother Mohammed Shariq attempted to attack the Hindutva Temple in Kadri (in Dakshina Kannada district), a bastion of the Saffron terrorists in Mangaluru," the message which has gone viral in social message said.
It further said, "Although this operation didn't meet its objectives, we still consider it a success from a tradecraft and tactics point of view as the brother in spite of being wanted and being pursued by the state and central intelligence agencies, was not only able to successfully evade them but even prepared and mounted an attack." On November 19, Mohammed Shariq, who was at large, was travelling in an autorickshaw with a cooker which exploded in Mangaluru injuring him and the driver. Police called the blast an act of terror.

Karnataka Police on Monday identified three individuals as possible handlers and financers of 24-year-old Shariq, accused in the Mangaluru auto blast case.&nbsp;
ADGP (Law and Order) Alok Kumar named - Musabir Hussain, Abdul Matheen Taha and Arafath Ali as Shariq's possible handlers.&nbsp;
While Shariq will be booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, his alleged handlers are accused in different terror cases. Arafath Ali is a co-accused with Shariq in a case involving painting of an objectionable graffiti in Mangaluru in 2020.&nbsp;
Ali is still absconding in the graffiti case, says the police and acording to them, is in Dubai. Ali was Shariq's immediate handler, Karnataka ADGP said.&nbsp;
Above Arafath Ali was Abdul Matheen Taha, against whom NIA has announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh, named as Shariq's main handler by the police. Musabir Hussain and Taha are accused in a case filed in 2020 in Bengaluru by local cops for the creation of an ISIS-insipired terror gang with members from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.&nbsp;
All three reported handlers of Shariq hail from Shivamogga and are absconding in terror cases.&nbsp;
Shariq, who suffered burns in the low-intensity blast, was reportedly influenced and inspired by a terrorist organisation with global presence, Kumar said on Monday.&nbsp;

The state police is probing the funding received by Shariq as well as motivation that pushed him into making an IED and bringing it to Mangaluru from Myusuru for the alleged terror attack on November 19.
&nbsp;&ldquo;We do not know where he was taking the device and what he was planning since he is still hospitalised. He visited the city for a suspected recce on November 10 and went to a few crowded places,&rdquo; ADGP Alok Kumar said. &ldquo;There were also one or two local supporters involved and we are working on it,&rdquo; he said.
The cops have also found a picture on Shariq's mobile phone where he is seen posing like an Islamic State (IS) cardre with the suspected pressure cooker IED that exploded in the auto in Mangaluru.&nbsp;
A police raid on the Mysuru house, where Sharik reportedly made the IED between September 20 and November 19, uncovered a cache of explosives, including over 150 match-boxes.
Other materials found at the Mysuru rented house were 9 volt batteries, sizable quantities of phosphorus and sulphur, police said.
On November 19, the blast occurred in an autorickshaw in front of Kankanadi police station in Mangaluru.
The police said it was a terror incident as Shariq was in the autorickshaw with a pressure cooker fitted with detonator, wires and batteries. with PTI inputs

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Alok Kumar said the police are trying to find out the 24-year old's links with people outside Karnataka.

Police found materials that go into making bomb from the rented house in Mysuru of Mangaluru autorickshaw blast accused Mohammed Shariq, who was "influenced and inspired" by a global terrorist organisation, a senior police officer said on Monday.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Alok Kumar said the police are trying to find out the 24-year old's links with people outside Karnataka.
"His handler was Abdul Mateen Taha from Suddaguntepalya (in Bengaluru) on whom the National Investigation Agency has announced a reward of Rs five lakh," the ADGP said.
Shariq was "influenced and inspired" by a (terrorist) organisation with global presence, Kumar said.
Shariq, hailing from Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, was travelling in an autorickshaw with a pressure cooker fitted with detonator, wires and batteries, when it exploded on the outskirts of Mangaluru on Saturday.
He suffered burn injuries, is currently being treated in a city hospital and unable to speak.
Karnataka police termed the explosion "an act of terror" with intention to cause serious damage.
They are probing the incident along with central agencies.
"...Our priority is to see that he survives, we have to take him to a stage where we can question him," Kumar said.
"We found matchbox, sulphur, phosphorus, batteries, circuit and nut and bolts from the (Shariq's rented) house (in Mysuru). Mohan Kumar, the owner of the house, was not aware of these activities," Kumar said.
Taha was the "main handler". He along with Khwaja and Mohammed Pasha from Tamil Nadu were booked under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act at Suddaguntepalya in Bengaluru in 2020.
Apart from Taha, Arafat Ali from Thirthahalli was also like his handler, he added.
Search operations were carried out in seven locations including Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Mysuru and Thirthahalli, the ADGP said.
"We are trying to find out those who harboured him," he added.
Shariq is being booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, police sources said.
He was also involved in painting objectionable graffiti in Mangaluru earlier and was later released on bail.
His name had also earlier surfaced when a communal clash broke out over putting up the Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's photo at a public place on August 15 in the district headquarters town of Shivamogga.
The vandals had gone on a rampage and stabbed Prem Singh, a servant in a nearby shop.
In this connection, police arrested Mohammed Zabihulla alias Charbi, Syed Yasin and Maaz Muneer Ahmed while Shariq absconded.
Yasin and Maaz had told police at the time that they were "brainwashed" by Shariq. The group was planning to set up an Islamic State base in the country and wanted to "establish a Caliphate" in the country.
A messaging services app came handy for Shariq to establish a link with the Syria-based Islamic State (IS) militants from whom they got a PDF to learn how to make a bomb, a police officer from Shivamogga who investigated the case told PTI.
This year, the group prepared an improvised explosive device to carry out destruction and tested it on the banks of Tunga river. Their next target was to carry out explosions in various parts of Karnataka, the officer said.
"Shariq had made the gang members into believing that the independence India got from the British was not a real one. They need to struggle further to establish a Caliphate. Only then, India will get freedom", the Shivamogga-based terror module members had told the investigating police team then.&nbsp;

According to media reports, the passenger identified as Mohammed Shariq is an accused in two separate unlawful activities cases in Karnataka since 2020.
24 year old Shariq was injured in the explosion on Saturday and has sustained 40% burn injuries. The driver of the auto rickshaw was also injured .
Earlier on Sunday, senior police officials confirmed the explosion inside the moving vehicle was an act of terror triggered by low-intensity explosives concealed in a pressure cooker.

The person arrested is the owner of the car that is said to have been used by the culprits for the crime.
"More than 51 people have been inquired into in connection with the murder. We got the traces of a car while scanning the CCTV footage- White Hyundai Eon car- on the basis of footage and registration number we had taken eight cars into custody and inquired its owners," Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said.
Speaking to reporters here, he said, based on available information and inquiry, the owner of one specific car has been taken into custody on the outskirts of Surathkal last evening.
"During the inquiry he has disclosed certain information regarding who took the car from him... Now he will be presented before the court and taken into custody. He will be further questioned from which we may get further information on those involved," he said adding that based on the information gathered so far, police teams are at work to nab the culprits.

Noting that the father of the deceased Fazil has requested for inquiry from a higher ranking official, the Commissioner said, following this request, he has made an order appointing ACP North Mahesh Kumar as the investigating officer.
He also warned that police are registering cases against those spreading fake, offensive and inflammatory messages on social media or the internet or making such statements. "Eight member team is watching such social media activities in Mangaluru Commissionerate limits and things are getting documented."

Explosion in Mangaluru auto an 'act of terror': Karnataka DGP

Earlier on Saturday, while CCTV visuals from the location, shared by police, showed the autorickshaw catching fire following what appeared to be a minor explosion

The explosion in a moving autorickshaw in Mangaluru was an 'act of terror,' Karnataka Director General of Police, Praveen Sood said on Sunday.
In a tweet, the DGP said, "It's confirmed now. The blast is not accidental but an ACT OF TERROR with intention to cause serious damage. Karnataka State Police is probing deep into it along with central agencies." The blast occurred on Saturday evening inside an autorickshaw, near a police station, leaving the passenger and the driver injured. Both have been admitted to the hospital.
Earlier on Saturday, while CCTV visuals from the location, shared by police, showed the autorickshaw catching fire following what appeared to be a minor explosion, a police official, however, did not confirm if it was a 'blast'.
City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar rushed to the spot and told reporters after inspection that there was 'a fire' in the autorickshaw and there is no need for panic. He appealed against spreading rumours.

A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death outside a textile shop at Surathkal on the outskirts of Mangaluru by a group of unidentified assailants on Thursday evening
The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Mangalpete near Surathkal. He was grievously inured in the attack and died on the way to hospital, the police said.
The assailants chased Fazil who was talking to an acquaintance and brutally assaulted him before stabbing him.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Mangalpete near Surathkal. He was grievously inured in the attack and died on the way to hospital, the police said.
The assailants chased Fazil who was talking to an acquaintance and brutally assaulted him before stabbing him.&nbsp;

Immediately after the incident, prohibitory orders were imposed in Dakshina Kannada district which has been tense following the murder of a BJP youth wing leader on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Local residents immediately informed police, which rushed to the spot and took the blood soaked Nettaru to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.
Dakshina Kannada Rural district Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Bhagawan Sonawane told PTI investigations are on though there is no breakthrough as of now.
To a query on the possibility of the assailants coming from Kerala, the officer said, "that is one of the possibilities. We are working on various angles. We are on it." Following the incident, the BJP and many Hindu organisations staged a protest against the killing in front of the hospital where the body was kept.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has given a Bandh call in Kadaba, Suliya and Puttur Taluks of the district on Wednesday against the killing.
Local BJP leader Muralidhar Hamsatadka said the Hindus were in shock and dismay following the brutal murder of Nettaru. He appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of the district to console the bereaved family members. Following the incident, four police teams have been constituted to nab the assailants.
Security has been beefed up in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts as additional forces have been deployed to ensure law and order.
Police also suspect the murder could have been carried out due to vengeance as a youth was murdered in the region a few days ago.

A case has been registered by the city police against eight students for their involvement in the lip-lock competition at a private apartment in the city, a video of which had gone viral.
The students were booked for alleged offences punishable under Sections 376, 354, 354 (C) and 120 (B) of the IPC and different sections of the POCSO and IT Acts, police sources said.
A 17-year-old boy, who uploaded the lip-lock video on social media, is one of the accused. The students are learnt to have got together at a flat in February last and held a ‘truth or dare’ contest. The video showed a boy and a girl, both in their uniforms, engrossed in a lip-lock while their friends are cheering them on.
Sources said the case was registered after investigations revealed that all the eight boys sexually assaulted the two girls in the group on different occasions at several places, using the video clips of the sexual acts.
City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said the probe will be taken to its logical end. The college managements should keep a vigil on students’ activities and bring to the notice of the police such cases of extreme indiscipline and misconduct, he said.

The 14-year-old's mother's birthday was on June 11, and he requested the hostel warden for a mobile phone to speak to her. However, the warden did not provide the student with a phone, as per police.
Subsequently, the boy's family members tried to call him, but were not allowed to talk to him, police said. Distressed by this, the teenager reportedly hanged himself the same night and left behind a suicide note.
The body was found by other students on June 12 morning, and the deceased's family reached the hostel a few hours later. The incident occurred in Mangaluru, and the boy was a resident of Hosakote, Bengaluru.
Police are conducting further investigation.
