Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday targetted the Election Commission over allotting the party's name and symbol to the rebel faction and termed the poll body a "slave" of people in power.
Dubbing the EC a "chuna lagav" commission weeks after losing the party name and election symbol "bow and arrow" to the faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Thackeray said the poll body can never take away the party, founded by his father late Bal Thackeray, from him.
He said it was Bal Thackeray who stood with the Bharatiya Janata Party when it was politically "untouchable", and dared the former ally to seek votes in Maharashtra only in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi without invoking the Thackeray senior.
"You (the Election Commission) have taken away the party name and the symbol from us, but you can't take away Shiv Sena from me," the former chief minister said pointing out a huge turnout at a rally, his first after losing the party name and election symbol.
"I have nothing to offer to you. I have come to seek your blessings and support," he told the gathering.
Khed constituency in Ratnagiri district in the coastal Konkan region is the home turf of former Thackeray loyalist Ramdas Kadam, who has switched allegiance to the Shinde-led faction.
In a big blow to Uddhav Thackeray, the Election Commission last month allotted the name &lsquo;Shiv Sena&rsquo; and its poll symbol to the group led by Shinde who has the support of most of the MLAs of Shiv Sena.
Thackeray said he didn't accept the EC's decision.
"If the Election Commission is not suffering from cataract, it should come and see the ground situation. The EC is a 'chuna lagav' commission and a slave of those in power. The principle based on which the EC took this decision is wrong,' he said.
Thackeray said the party has appealed in the Supreme Court.
He said the BJP was trying to finish off Shiv Sena brutally and cruelly but won't succeed.
He said the move to destroy Shiv Sena was akin to the attack on the unity of Marathi people as well as Hindus.
"When BJP was untouchable in politics, Balasaheb Thackeray stood by that party," the former chief minister said.
He said earlier sadhus and sants used to be part of the BJP but the party is now full of opportunists.
"The largest number of corrupt people are in BJP. First, they (BJP) accuse the people in the Opposition of corruption. However, those accused of corruption are then inducted into BJP," he said.
Dismissing the criticism that he did not venture out of his house when he was the chief minister (November 2019-June 2022), Thackeray said, "I didn't go out because of the COVID pandemic but I worked from home, and my work was praised during the pandemic".
He said his supporters will decide whether they want him as the party president and not the Election Commission.
"People will have to decide whether they want me or Eknath Shinde. I will accept the verdict of the people but not of the EC. If people say they don't want me, I will leave just like I had left 'Varsha' (the official residence of Maharashtra chief minister after resigning from the post"), he said.
Targetting BJP, he said like Eknath Shinde who "stole" my (Uddhav Thackeray's) father, the BJP has "stolen sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Subhash Chandra Bose because that party has no icons to bank on".
" When you see someone with a bow and arrow, he is a thief. Will you vote for him (a reference to Shinde)?" he asked the audience.
"Earlier, the BJP's dais used to be full of sadhus and sants but now it is full of opportunists. I dare the BJP to seek votes in Maharashtra only in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and not Balasaheb Thackeray," Thackeray added.
He appealed to his supporters to make BJP bite the dust in the elections in Maharashtra.&nbsp;

A farmer from Maharashtra's Solapur was in for a rude shock when he got to know that he has earned a profit of merely Rs 2.49 against the sale of his 512 kg onions to a trader in the district.

A farmer from Maharashtra's Solapur was in for a rude shock when he got to know that he has earned a profit of merely Rs 2.49 against the sale of his 512 kg onions to a trader in the district.
The farmer, 63-year-old Rajendra Chavan who resides in Barshi tehsil of Solapur, said his onion yield fetched a price of Rs 1 per kg at the Solapur market yard and after all the deductions he received this paltry sum as his net profit last week.
Talking to PTI, Chavan said, "I had sent 10 bags of onions weighing more than five quintals to an onion trader in Solapur for sale. But after deducting charges towards loading, transport, labour and others, I received a net profit of just Rs 2.49 from him." The rate the trader offered to me was Rs 100 per quintal. The overall weight of the crop was 512 kg and the total price he got for the produce was Rs 512, he said.
"After deductions worth Rs 509.51 against labour, weighing, transportation and other charges, I received a net profit of Rs 2.49. This is an insult to me and other onion-growers in the state. If we get such returns, how will we survive?" he asked.
He said the onion farmers need to get a good price for the crop and the affected farmers get compensation.
While Chavan claimed that the produce was of good quality, the trader said it was low grade.
"The farmer had brought only 10 bags and the produce was also of low grade. That is why, he got Rs 100 per quintal rate. So after all the deductions, he got Rs 2 as net profit," the trader said.
He added that the same farmer had received good returns in the recent past by selling more than 400 bags to me. "This time he brought the remaining produce that was hardly 10 bags and since the prices have gone down, he got this rate," he said.
Speaking to PTI, farmers leader and former MP Raju Shetti said that the onion hitting the market now is a 'kharip' produce and cannot be stored for a long time and that is why the shelf life of the product is short.
"This onion needs to be sold in the market immediately and exported out. But due to glut, the prices of onions have nosedived in the market," he said.
He added that this onion is not being purchased by NAFED, so the only option is that the government should make the market available for this 'kharif' onion.
"The government's export and import policy regarding onions is not consistent. We had two permanent markets - Pakistan and Bangladesh, but they preferred buying onions from Iran instead of us due to the inconsistent policy of the government. The third market is Sri Lanka, but everyone knows their situation and no one is taking risks to send their produce," he said.
He added that the government should buy this onion or give subsidies to farmers.

Fadnavis had last week said the government would study laws on "love jihad" framed by other states and take an appropriate decision.

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Nitesh Rane has said he along with members of the Sakal Hindu Samaj have asked the Maharashtra government to enact a law in the state against "love jihad" and religious conversion.
Speaking to reporters in the state legislature complex in Nagpur on Wednesday, Rane said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis have assured to bring such a law soon in the state.
"Love jihad" is a term often used by right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage Rane said he along with women representatives of the Sakal Hindu Samaj met Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy CM Fadnavis, demanding a law against "love jihad" and religious conversion in Maharashtra, on the lines of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and other states.
"The chief minister and the deputy CM have taken our demands seriously and assured to bring a law soon in the state," he said.
Rane said the Sakal Hindu Samaj has been taking out morchas in every district of Maharashtra, demanding a strict law against "love jihad" and religious conversion.
Fadnavis had last week said the government would study laws on "love jihad" framed by other states and take an appropriate decision.
Notably, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan recently alleged the death of actor Tunisha Sharma last week was a matter of "love jihad" and that the state was planning to bring a strict law to curb such incidents.

Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday walked out of Mumbai's Arthur Road jail in the presence of his supporters.
He has been released in a corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation in April this year. The Bombay High Court on Tuesday had refused to extend its stay on an order granting him bail.
The senior NCP leader had been in jail since November 2021 after the Enforcement Directorate arrested him in an alleged money laundering case. He has been accused of misusing his office by collecting bribe worth over ₹4.70 crore from Mumbai bars through police officers.

Last week, the high court had extended the stay till December 27 on the CBI's request.
On Tuesday, the central agency sought another extension which was refused by the high court.

A 38-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a buffalo calf in Maharashtra's Pune city, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place in Deccan area of the city on Friday, when locals spotted the man allegedly raping a buffalo calf, and they beat him up till he fell unconscious, an official said.
The accused, who hails from Nepal, was rushed to Sassoon General Hospital in an injured state, he said.
"Based on the evidence submitted by locals, we have registered an FIR against the man under section 377 (unnatural sex) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals Act," a senior inspector of Deccan Police Station said.&nbsp;

At least 11 persons were killed and 38 others injured as a private bus travelling to Mumbai caught fire after hitting a trailer truck in Nashik city of Maharashtra early on Saturday, officials said.
The accident took place at Nandur Naka on Nashik-Aurangabad highway around 5.15 am when the 'sleeper' bus was coming from Yavatmal in eastern Maharashtra, they said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the bus tragedy and said ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and the injured would be given Rs 50,000 each.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the dead and said the medical expenses of the injured would be borne by the state government.
"A luxury bus travelling to Mumbai from Yavatmal hit a trailer truck going to Pune at an intersection near Mirchi Hotel on Nashik-Aurangabad highway. Soon after ramming into the truck, the bus caught fire in which 11 passengers died," Nashik Police Commissioner Jayant Naiknavare said.
The injured persons were admitted to the District Civil Hospital and another private medical facility in Nashik, he said.
Before catching fire, the bus also hit a mini cargo van, due to which it got overturned, the commissioner added.
Another police official said 38 persons were injured in the incident.
On being alerted, the police, fire brigade and other agencies reached the spot and launched a rescue operation and the fire was doused off. However, the bus was completely gutted in the incident, he said.
Some eyewitnesses said the fire was so intense that they could not do anything to save the passengers for some time and had to stand there helplessly.
The death toll in the accident may go up as the condition of some of the injured persons is serious, the officials added.
In a tweet, PM Modi said, "Anguished by the bus tragedy in Nashik. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in this mishap. May the injured recover at the earliest. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected." "An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each of the deceased due to the bus fire in Nashik. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," he added.

The police registered a case under suicide after a post-mortem conducted at Nandurbar District Hospital had ruled out any foul play. However, the family challenged that the girl was gang raped and murdered by four men.
The deceased’s family buried her body in a makeshift grave which was covered with sealed with salt as a protest to demand justice. The family told Indian Express  “If the body has decomposed, it would give another reason to the police to deny us justice. So, I had to preserve the body hoping for a second post-mortem that would bring the truth out,” the girl’s father told the paper.
Dhadgaon police registered a case against the three accused and arrested them, only after the case escalated.
 
Deputy Superintendent of Police of Dhadgaon, Shrikant Bhumre, told India Express “We were satisfied with the details and statements given by the victim’s family members and relatives. Acting on the complaint, we have today arrested three suspects—Ranjeet Thackrey, Sunil Valvi and Amar Valvi—all residents of Vavi village. At present, it is difficult to say anything. We are carrying out a probe.”
 
The fresh autopsy of the body will be video recorded in presence of the magistrate.

A man claiming to be a farmer from Osmanabad district in Maharashtra tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire outside the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Tuesday morning, a police official said.
Police personnel on duty in the area doused the flames and rushed him to a hospital, he said.
The incident occcured when the Maha Vikas Aghadi was protesting on the steps of the Maharashtra Assembly demanding compensation for farmers whose crops were damaged in the rain. 
Subhash Bhanudas Deshmukh, from Tandulwadi village of Washi tehsil in Osmanabad, set himself ablaze following a fight with his brother, the official said.
"He is not a farmer. We are trying to get information and ascertain the exact reason behind taking such a step," he said.
The man was rushed to the GT Hospital with 20 to 30 per cent burns, the official said.
He is conscious and the Marine Drive police are conducting further probe into the incident, he added.

The fresh plea has been filed in a pending petition by Subhash Desai, the general secretary of the Shiv Sena and seeks the nod of the top court to make the poll panel also a party.&nbsp; The Thackeray faction has also written to the poll panel requesting it not to go ahead with the plea of the Shinde faction in view of the pendency of a batch of petitions in the top court.&nbsp;
The plea terms the plea of the rival Shinde group to get the poll sybmol and the tag of the real Shiv Sena as an act of &ldquo;desperation&rdquo;.&nbsp;

The Thackeray group filed representation before the EC last week after the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena had written to the Commission seeking allocation of the party's 'bow and arrow' election symbol to it, citing the recognition granted to them in the Lok Sabha and the Maharashtra Assembly.&nbsp;
The top court on July 20 had said the petitions filed by the Shiv Sena and its rebel MLAs during the recent Maharashtra political crisis raised constitutional issues including split, the merger of a political party, defection, and disqualification which may require consideration by a larger bench.&nbsp;
The bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana, meanwhile, had extended the operation of its July 11 order by which it had asked Assembly Speaker not to proceed with a plea seeking disqualification of MLAs of Thackeray faction as sought by the Shinde group on grounds of defying the party whip during the trust vote and the election of the speaker.&nbsp;
The bench is seized of as many as six pending pleas about the recent political crisis in Maharashtra that led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state.&nbsp; The first one was filed by the Shinde faction during the summer vacation when some rebel Sena MLAs moved before it challenging the disqualification proceedings initiated by the deputy speaker.&nbsp;
The rest five pleas have been filed by the Thackeray faction. The Shiv Sena split last month when more than two-thirds of the party's MLAs withdrew their support from the Maharashtra government led by Uddhav Thackeray, throwing their lot with Shinde.&nbsp; Shinde was sworn in as the Maharashtra chief minister on June 30 with support of the BJP.&nbsp;

The number of Delta plus cases of coronavirus in Maharashtra rose to 103 with the addition of 27 more such cases, the state health department said on Monday.
