The Pakistani army resorted to heavy artillery and mortar shelling, targeting forward villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, leaving nine people dead and 41 others injured, officials said.
The intense shelling from across the border started shortly after Indian armed forces carried out missile attacks on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir to avenge the April 22 terror attack in south Kashmir&rsquo;s Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead.
The officials said the Indian Army is responding to the shelling in a befitting manner, resulting in many casualties on the enemy side after several of their posts engaged in firing were destroyed.
The worst-hit in the Pakistani shelling was Poonch district which accounted for all the civilian deaths, the officials said, adding 28 persons were also injured and the condition of some of them was stated to be critical.
The indiscriminate shelling by Pakistan created panic among the border residents who were forced to take refuge in underground bunkers or shift to safer places within or outside their villages, the officials said.
The shelling was reported from all along the LoC in Poonch, including Balakote, Mendhar, Mankote, Krishna Ghati, Gulpur, Kerni and even Poonch district headquarters, resulting in damage to dozens of residential houses, they said.
The officials identified the deceased as Balvinder Kour alias &ldquo;Ruby&rdquo; (33), Mohd Zain Khan (10), his elder sister Zoya Khan (12), Mohd Akram (40), Amrik Singh (55), Mohd Iqbal (45), Ranjeet Singh (48), Shakeela Bi (40) and Amarjeet Singh (47).
Ten persons, including five minor children were also injured in cross-border shelling in Uri sector of Baramulla district, while three others were injured in Rajouri district, the officials said, adding several houses also caught fire due to shelling in Karnah sector of Kupwara district.
Earlier, a defence spokesman said during the intervening night of May 6 and 7, the Pakistan Army resorted to arbitrary firing, including artillery shelling, from posts across the LoC and International Border opposite Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the Indian Army is responding in a &ldquo;proportionate manner&rdquo;.
Army sources said Indian troops caused many casualties to the enemy forces after destroying several of their posts in the retaliatory action.
The cross-border firing between the two sides was going on in some sectors, including Poonch, when last reports were received, the sources said.
Authorities have ordered that all educational institutions in the five border districts of the Jammu region will remain closed on Wednesday.
"In view of the prevailing situation, all schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch will remain closed today," Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said on X.
This was the 13th consecutive night of unprovoked firing along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir, amid heightened tensions following the Pahalgam attack.
"Pakistan again violates the Ceasefire Agreement by firing artillery in Bhimber Gali in the Poonch-Rajauri area. The Indian Army is responding appropriately in a calibrated manner," the additional directorate general of public information (ADGPI) of the Indian Army wrote on X.
The ceasefire violations along the LoC and International Border (IB) have been very rare after India and Pakistan renewed the ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021.

In a major development, the Narendra Modi government is reportedly discussing the possibility of withdrawing the Indian Army completely from the hinterland of Kashmir.
The proposal has been under discussion for around two years, and has reached an advanced stage now, according to a report in The Indian Express. If the government implements the proposal, then the Army would be deployed only at the disputed border with Pakistan called the Line of Control (LoC).
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) would cover the duties of Army personnel regarding anti-terror operations and law-and-order in the Valley, the report said.
The move comes three-and-a-half years after the Modi government revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status, and the state was bifurcated and converted into a Union Territory by the Parliament.

Authorities on Tuesday imposed night curfew for a kilometre stretch along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district to ensure better area domination by BSF troops, according to an official order.
The step was taken in view of the threat of cross-border infiltration and smuggling of weapons through drones in the present foggy weather, it stated.
The order issued by the district magistrate Anuradha Gupta banned the movement of civilians from 9 PM to 6 AM in area up to one kilometer from the International Border (IB) in Samba district.
"No person or group of persons shall move in the area up to one kilometer along the International Border in district Samba from 2100 hrs to 0600 hour during the night," the order stated.

This order shall come into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force for a period of two months from the date of its issuance, if not withdrawn or /rescinded earlier.

Punjab: another drone carrying 'consignment' shot down by BSF along Pak border

A green-coloured packet was recovered from under the drone and it had two kg material, which is suspected to be narcotics, a BSF spokesperson said.

The Border Security Force shot down a quad-copter drone suspected to be carrying narcotics on Sunday night along the India-Pakistan international border in the Amritsar region, officials said. &nbsp; This is the second such incident in past three days at this frontier.
The drone weighing 12 kgs had four propellers. It was intercepted and shot down around 9.15 pm near the Rania border post in the Amritsar sector by the troops of the 22nd Battalion of the BSF, they said.
A green-coloured packet was recovered from under the drone and it had two kg material, which is suspected to be narcotics, a BSF spokesperson said.
In a similar incident that took place on the intervening night of October 13-14, the BSF shot down a large (quad copter) Pakistani drone in the Gurdaspur sector of Punjab.&nbsp;

According to the police several arms and ammunition including Two AK-47 rifles, two pistols, and four hand grenades were recovered from the possession of the terrorists
The identity of killed terrorists is yet to be acertained. 
Around 10 days ago, too, 2 terrorists were nuetralized by the cops after an encounter in the Nowgam area of Srinagar district, following a 'specific input' generated by Kashmir Police.

The Centre has notified amendments to environmental impact assessment rules, exempting highway projects related to defence and strategic importance within 100 km of the Line of Control or the border from the requirement of environmental clearance.

Environmental activists had opposed the draft notification issued in April to exempt border projects from environmental clearance, saying it would cause environmental degradation in areas having a fragile ecology.

The Centre has notified amendments to environmental impact assessment rules, exempting highway projects related to defence and strategic importance within 100 km of the Line of Control or the border from the requirement of environmental clearance.
The notification issued by the Union Environment Ministry also exempts projects pertaining to the expansion of terminal buildings at airports (without an increase in the existing area of the airport) from seeking a green nod.
It also increases the exemption threshold of biomass-based power plants which also use auxiliary fuels such as coal, lignite or petroleum products up to 15 percent and fish handling capacity of ports and harbours which exclusively handle fish.
&ldquo;Highway projects related to defence and strategic importance in border states are sensitive in nature and in many cases need to be executed on priority keeping in view strategic, defence, and security considerations.

&ldquo;And in this regard, the central government deems it necessary to exempt such projects from the requirement of environmental clearance in the border areas subject to specified standard operating procedure along with standard environmental safeguards for self-compliance by the executing agency,&rdquo; the notification read.
All highway projects are exempted up to 100 km from the LOC or the border, it said.
Environmental activists had opposed the draft notification issued in April to exempt border projects from environmental clearance, saying it would cause environmental degradation in areas having a fragile ecology.
With the amended policy coming into force, certain stretches of the Char Dham project in Uttarakhand, and several other projects in the Himalayas and the northeast which fall within 100 km of the border or the LoC will not require the green nod.
The project involves the widening of 899 km of roads in ecologically sensitive areas of Uttarakhand to improve connectivity to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunothri, and Gangotri shrines.
