The first of the 41 workers trapped in Uttarakand's Silkyara tunnel was brought out Tuesday evening, ending an ordeal that stretched almost 17 days.
Around 8 pm, an ambulance with the worker sitting in the vehicle left the mouth of the tunnel and was headed to a community health centre.
An official said rescue workers had broken through the last stretch of the rubble at about 7 pm.
NDRF and SDRF men entered the steel chute to reach the trapped workers and were bringing them out on wheeled-stretchers one by one, said a rescuer.&nbsp;

The operation to rescue the workers trapped in Uttarakhand's Silkyara tunnel has been going on for 17 days. The delay in bringing out the workers was partly due to the obstructions faced by the drilling machines while clearing the debris.&nbsp;
Auger and drilling machines kept hitting metal obstructions in the debris, stalling the rescue work.&nbsp;
This led to manual intervention with rescue workers entering the the narrow pipes pushed through the rescue holes to cut the metal structures using gas cutters.&nbsp;
According to the Indian Express, on the 12th day of the rescue operation the teams faced a similar situation.&nbsp;
Praveen Yadav, an underground tunneling expert for Trenchless Engineering, told Indian Express that several people tried to enter to the narrow pipes but could not in the absence of proper oxygen supply.&nbsp;
He volunteered to go in but his boss asked him to wait for the National Disaster Response Force personnel to try.&nbsp;
Yadav told the Indian Express that NDRF jawans were to big and the rescue pipes too small so he ultimately went in with two other people.&nbsp;
Yadav said he took a gas cutter, two bottles of water and crawled into the pipes on his knees and elbows.&nbsp;

He said that sometimes the work requires him to go inside those pipes two or three times a day.&nbsp;
Yadav and his aides found the metal girders and cut them using gas cutters. They then removed the cut pieces.&nbsp;
He said that the process generated a lot of heat and they faced the risk of sustaining burn injuries.&nbsp;

The hospital&rsquo;s manager, Meena, and receptionist, Rizma Khan, were arrested earlier this month, police said.

The Bengaluru police have arrested a doctor and his lab technician who allegedly performed around 900 illegal abortions in the last three years, officials said on Monday. Dr Chandan Ballal and his lab technician Nisar allegedly charged around Rs 30,000 for each abortion which they carried out at a hospital in the district headquarters town of Mysuru. Both were taken into custody last week, they said. &nbsp; The hospital&rsquo;s manager, Meena, and receptionist, Rizma Khan, were arrested earlier this month, police said. Police busted the sex-determination and female foeticide racket last month with the arrest of two accused&mdash;Shivalinge Gowda and Nayan Kumar&mdash;in the district headquarters town of Mandya, near Mysuru, when they were taking a pregnant woman for abortion in a car. During questioning, the accused duo revealed a jaggery unit in Mandya, used as an ultrasound scan centre, from where a police team later seized the scan machine, which did not have valid authorisation or other official documents, a police officer said.

An Indian Railways engineer was asked to report to Delhi for a new posting 3 days before his scheduled retirement.

"Sheer madness," responded a senior engineer to the Railway Board when it ordered his transfer from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh to Delhi three days before his retirement.
The chief communication engineer from the Bilaspur division of South East Central Railway (SECR) has written to the Railway Board terming his transfer to the Northern Railway (NR) zone three days before his retirement an act of harassment.
According to the transfer order, KP Arya is supposed to join the NR on a higher administrative grade post on November 28, 2023, while his retirement is due on November 30.
"This order seems well in order at the surface, but when seen in the complete perspective of my imminent superannuation within a week on 30th Nov 2023, the madness shines brightly," Arya said in a letter addressed to the Secretary, Railway Board.
He added, "Because this is nothing but sheer madness only to transfer one employee, who has served the IR (Indian Railway) organisation his whole life, in the week of his superannuation so that his superannuation settlement gets disrupted and he gets harassed in the last days in the organisation." Arya told PTI that the SECR zone already had a vacant HAG post, still, the Railway Board decided to transfer him to the NR zone on a similar vacant post.
"I will work only for three days in NR headquarters, New Delhi and retire from the Indian Railways. The Railways will pay me about Rs 3 lakh just as transfer money which is a complete waste of public money," Arya told PTI.
Though this is a promotional transfer, Arya will not get any additional monetary benefit. "My promotion was due about six months ago but it was kept pending. However, as per the government norms, I started getting monetary benefits for that post from the day my promotion was due. So, this promotional transfer is only to harass me." The engineer in his letter alleged, "In the series of harassment being meted out to me, a professionally very very competent, honest and upright officer by a cabal of officials of dubious character &hellip; I found it my duty to expose the concerned Railway Board officials as I have always done."

At least 33 passengers were left injured after a bus going from Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur to Rajasthan's Pratapgarh overturned late on the night of 27th November.
According to police, the speeding bus went out of control and overturned near Hathuniya village.
They added that the primary cause of the accident appears to be a tyre burst.
There was an outcry inside the bus after the accident, following which locals rushed to the spot and rescued passengers by breaking the glass windows of the bus.
All injured were rushed to the district hospital in a truck. Three of them were said to be critical.

If the government implements the proposal, then the Army would be deployed only at the disputed border with Pakistan called the Line of Control (LoC).

In a major development, the Narendra Modi government is reportedly discussing the possibility of withdrawing the Indian Army completely from the hinterland of Kashmir.
The proposal has been under discussion for around two years, and has reached an advanced stage now, according to a report in The Indian Express. If the government implements the proposal, then the Army would be deployed only at the disputed border with Pakistan called the Line of Control (LoC).
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) would cover the duties of Army personnel regarding anti-terror operations and law-and-order in the Valley, the report said.
The move comes three-and-a-half years after the Modi government revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status, and the state was bifurcated and converted into a Union Territory by the Parliament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the 41 rescued workers over the phone and enquired about their well-being.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded a successful operation to rescue 41 workers trapped in an under-construction road tunnel in Uttarakhand on Tuesday, asserting that everyone involved in the mission has created an amazing example of humanity and teamwork.
Modi also spoke to the rescued construction workers over the phone and enquired about their well-being, officials said.
The prime minister said the multi-agency rescue exercise has made everyone emotional.
In a post on X soon after the workers were brought out of the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, Modi saluted the spirit of those involved in the operation and said their courage and resolve have given a new lease of life to the 41 labourers.
"Everyone involved in the mission has created an amazing example of humanity and teamwork," he said.
Addressing the 41 rescued workers, Modi said their courage and patience have inspired everyone as he wished them good health and well-being.
"It is a matter of great satisfaction that these friends of ours will meet their dear ones after a long wait," the prime minister said, asserting that the patience and courage of their family members cannot be praised enough.
Later, in a post on X, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) IT department head Amit Malviya took a swipe at the opposition and said, "Just so that the Opposition ecosystem further stews in their bile, let it be known that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the head of the National Disaster Management Authority, which oversaw the arduous Silkyara rescue operation." Modi is the man who deserves all the credit for the successful rescue operation, he added.
The rescue workers on Tuesday evening pulled out all the 41 workers who got trapped after a portion of the Silkyara tunnel, part of the Centre's ambitious Char Dham project, collapsed due to a landslide on November 12.

As rescuers in India on Tuesday successfully pulled out all 41 construction workers trapped in a collapsed mountain tunnel in Uttarakhand after 17 days, the global media hailed the rescue operation and provided live coverage of the dramatic development.
"Outside the tunnel, there have been celebrations at the news of the first man coming out of the tunnel," the BBC reported while providing regular updates on the rescue operation.
It uploaded on its website a photograph that showed Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami and Union Minister VK Singh meeting the first worker rescued from the tunnel.
"Video footage from the scene showed Pushkar Singh Dhami, chief minister of Uttarakhand state meeting the workers, who appeared to be in good health, as they were removed from the tunnel amid jubilant scenes," CNN reported.
The first workers were removed following a series of agonizing setbacks, during which rescue efforts were halted when the heavy machinery used to drill through the debris broke down, forcing workers to partially dig by hand and adopt other riskier methods to bring them to safety, it said.
The evacuation of the men to safety began more than six hours after rescuers broke through to end an ordeal that began on November 12 when the tunnel caved in, Qatar-based news channel Al-Jazeera reported.
It said the ambulances with their lights flashing lined up at the mouth of the tunnel to transport the workers to a hospital about 30km away.
"The labourers are being pulled out through a passageway made of welded pipes that rescuers had previously pushed through dirt and rocks," it said.
British daily 'The Guardian' reported that the dramatic scenes of the first men emerging on stretchers from the entrance of the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel came after over 400 hours, during which the major rescue operation hit multiple obstacles, delays and false promises of imminent rescue.
"Human labour triumphed over machinery as the specialists managed to manually drill through the final 12 metres of rubble to reach the men. An 'escape passage' pipe was inserted, enabling the rescuers &ndash; carrying wheeled stretchers and oxygen cylinders &ndash; to enter and finally reach those inside," the paper said in its detailed report.
Military engineers and miners drill 'rat hole' through debris to complete a painstaking extraction mission, said London-based daily 'The Telegraph' in its lead story.
A portion of the tunnel collapsed on November 12, blocking the exit for the workers who were inside.
Food, medicines and other essentials were sent to them through a six-inch pipe pushed through the rubble of the collapsed portion.

Following the improvement in Delhi-NCR's air quality, Centre has eased certain curbs imposed to contain pollution in the region.&nbsp;

The Centre on Tuesday ordered the revocation of restrictions under Stage-III of GRAP in the entire NCR with immediate effect, following improvement in air quality.
The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas (CAQM), a statutory body responsible for formulating strategies to combat pollution in the region, met on Tuesday in view of the significant improvement in the overall air quality of Delhi-NCR.
The air quality forecasts by the India Meteorological Department/Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology do not indicate the average air quality of Delhi to move to &lsquo;severe&rsquo; category in the coming days for which forecast is available, the CAQM said.
The Centre's pollution control panel had invoked the Stage III restrictions on November 2, directing a halt on non-essential construction work, stone crushing and mining in Delhi-NCR. Under this stage, restrictions were also imposed on the operation of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar.
The city's 24-hour average AQI, recorded at 4 pm every day, improved from 395 on Monday to 312 on Tuesday.&nbsp;

There was hugging and cheers as the ordeal ended. Outside the tunnel some people chanted &ldquo;Har Har Mahadev&rdquo; and &ldquo;Bharat Mata ki Jai&rdquo; Ambulances which had lined up at the tunnel ferried the workers to a community health centre where a special 41-bed ward had been set up.
Before this, the workers were given a quick medical checkup as they emerged out of the steel pipe.
CM Dhami said no worker was in a critical situation. But the labourers will be kept under medical observation for some time before being sent home, he said.
He said the youngest of the worker was rescued first.

Relief was felt far and wide.
Over the phone, Jharkhand&rsquo;s Sunil, who was camping in Silkyara, spoke to PTI on the rescue of his brother Anil.
"Finally, God heard us. My brother could be rescued. I am with him in an ambulance on the way to hospital," he said in a choked voice.
As the rescue appeared imminent earlier in the day, families stationed in Silkyara were allowed inside the tunnel with their belongings &ndash; so that they could travel with their loved ones to the medical centre.
