Landmine blast near India-Pakistan LoC; 2 Army soldiers injured while trying to douse forest fire

A dangerous landmine explosion occurred near the disputed India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir on June 12. Two Indian Army soldiers were injured in the landmine blast near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district.

The mine was part of an anti-infiltration obstacle system meant to deter or neutralise terrorists crossing over from the Pakistan-controlled side.

The landmine was triggered when Indian soldiers were trying to extinguish a forest fire in Balakote area. The injured personnel were hospitalised after the incident.

Similar incidents had occurred less than a month earlier in the same district. Several landmine explosions amid a forest fire had been reported from Poonch on May 18. No injuries had been reported then.

Jammu and Kashmir has seen a spike in fires in forests and agricultural land in recent times.
