Renowned for leading India to the 1983 World Cup triumph, Kapil Dev has raised concerns about the increasing injury toll among Indian cricketers due to their hectic schedules. Speaking at the Tata Steel Golf prize distribution ceremony, Kapil noted that players are on the field for nearly 10 months each year, leading to more frequent injuries. The National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru has turned into a rehabilitation hub for players, with more time being spent on recovery than on training.

Mohammed Shami, who emerged as India's top wicket-taker with 24 wickets in the 2023 ODI World Cup, also suffered a leg injury after the finals, requiring surgery. His 14-month recovery sidelined him from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which India lost for the first time in a decade. Without Shami, Bumrah lacked a dependable bowling partner.
Kapil commented, "The only thing that worries me is that they play for 10 months a year -- injuries will be much more common."
When asked about Bumrah's absence from the Champions Trophy, Kapil emphasized the importance of teamwork over individual players. He remarked, "Why talk about someone who is not in the team? It's a team game, and the team has to win, not individuals. If we play as a team, we will definitely win."
India is set to start its Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. Kapil expressed excitement about the young talent in Indian cricket. "When you see the youngsters, their confidence is unbelievable. We didn't have this much confidence when we were young. Good luck to them."
A golf enthusiast and current PGTI president, Kapil also made a plug for the sport. "Tell everyone to play golf. If they are not playing cricket, they should come and play golf. If they do, their performance will be better."
He likened the rise of Saudi-backed LIV Golf to IPL&rsquo;s transformation of cricket. Kapil stated, "When the IPL came, everyone benefited. The more tournaments, the better. The more events that happen, the better it is for the players."
LIV Golf features lucrative contracts and unique tournament formats, sparking controversy but attracting top golfers. Kapil called for more golf infrastructure in India to boost Olympic prospects.
"You have to build more golf courses -- only then can we play and do well in the Olympics," he insisted. "More driving ranges will lead to more players emerging, just like schools produce students."
Kapil dismissed the idea that golf is an elite sport, pointing to cricket&rsquo;s evolution. "About 60 years ago, only royals played cricket -- look at it now! The same will happen with golf; common people will play. This game is for everyone," he concluded.

In the interview, Yograj stated that his anger stemmed from being dropped from the North Zone team, allegedly due to selection decisions made by Kapil Dev and Bishan Singh Bedi. He recounted how the decision left him heartbroken and nearly ended his cricketing career. &ldquo;When Kapil Dev became captain of India, North Zone, and Haryana, he dropped me for no reason,&rdquo; Yograj claimed.
According to Yograj, his frustration reached a boiling point, and he went to Kapil Dev&rsquo;s house armed with a pistol, intending to confront him. &ldquo;I took my pistol out, I went to Kapil&rsquo;s house in Sector 9. Former India cricketer Yograj Singh revealed a shocking incident from his past, where in a fit of anger after being dropped from the team, he stormed to Kapil Dev's house with a pistol. Yograj, who played one Test and six ODIs for India, has never hesitated to voice his opinions, frequently blaming MS Dhoni for his son Yuvraj's retirement and criticizing Kapil Dev on various occasions.
Recalling the incident, Yograj shared how, feeling betrayed by Kapil Dev's decision to drop him from the team, he went to Kapil's residence in Sector 9 with his wife. &ldquo;When Kapil Dev became captain of India, North Zone, and Haryana, he dropped me for no reason. My wife wanted me to ask Kapil questions. I told her that I would teach this bloody man a lesson. I took my pistol out, I went to Kapil&rsquo;s house in Sector 9. He came out with his mother. I abused him a dozen times. I told him because of you I have lost a friend and what you have done, you will pay for it. I told him, &lsquo;I want to put a bullet through your head, but I am not doing it because you have a very pious mother, who is standing here,'" Yograj recounted on the Unfiltered by Samdish YouTube channel.
At that moment, Yograj decided to leave cricket behind and focus on his son Yuvraj's future. "I told Shabnam, &lsquo;Let&rsquo;s go.&rsquo; That was the moment I decided I would not play cricket, Yuvi will play," he added.
Yograj also made some strong statements about the late Bishan Singh Bedi, claiming that he was one of the key figures responsible for his exclusion from the Indian team. &ldquo;These guys, including Bishan Singh Bedi, they plotted against me. I never forgave Bishan Singh Bedi. The man died on his bed,&rdquo; he said.
Yograj went on to share a conversation he had with selector Ravindra Chadha, who revealed that Bedi, as the chief selector, didn't want to pick Yograj due to his close association with Sunil Gavaskar and his cricketing ties in Mumbai. "When I was dropped I spoke Ravindra Chadha, one of the selectors. He told me that Bishan Singh Bedi (the chief selector) didn&rsquo;t want to pick me because they thought I was Sunil Gavaskar&rsquo;s man and because I was playing cricket in Mumbai. I was very close to Gavaskar."
The 66-year-old also recounted an interesting incident after Yuvraj's crucial role in India's 2011 World Cup victory. He revealed that he sent Kapil a message along with a paper cutting stating that Yuvraj had outperformed Kapil in the World Cup. "In 2011 when India won the World Cup, there was only one guy who was crying, and it was Kapil Dev. I did send him a paper cutting that my son did better than you in the World Cup. Kapil sent me a WhatsApp text saying we will be brothers in the next life. We will be born from the same mother in the next life. He wanted to meet me. But there is a vengeance, and it still hurts," Yograj shared. Yograj has publicly claimed that MS Dhoni's decision to drop Yuvraj from the national team led to his premature retirement. Kapil Dev on Friday backed the BCCI's decision to terminate central contracts for lack of commitment to domestic cricket.

"Yes, few players will suffer, kuch logon ko taqleef hogi, hone do lekin desh se badhkar koi nahi hai," he told PTI

"A few players will suffer, but let it be," said legendary former India captain Kapil Dev on Friday as he backed the BCCI's decision to terminate central contracts for lack of commitment to domestic cricket, calling it a much-needed step to protect marquee first-class events like the Ranji Trophy.
Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were on Wednesday excluded from the BCCI's central contracts after ignoring the board's diktat to play in the Ranji Trophy. The decision evoked mixed reactions with some former players like Kirti Azad and Irfan Pathan backing the out-of-favour duo.
Kapil refrained from taking names but said the BCCI's decision to assert the importance of domestic cricket was long overdue.
"Yes, few players will suffer, kuch logon ko taqleef hogi, hone do lekin desh se badhkar koi nahi hai (some people will feel hurt but let it be because nobody is bigger than the country). Well done," he said.
"I congratulate the BCCI for taking the much needed step to protect the status of domestic cricket. I was sad to see domestic cricket being given the skip by players once they had established themselves in international cricket," the captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning side observed in his statement.
The BCCI, while announcing the central contracts, urged the players to give due importance to domestic competitions.
The 25-year-old Kishan did not turn up for Jharkhand throughout the team's campaign in Ranji Trophy despite not being on national duty after leaving the tour of South Africa in December citing personal reasons. He instead focussed on preparing for the IPL next month for his franchise Mumbai Indians.
Iyer, on the other hand, did not make himself available for Mumbai's Ranji quarterfinal against Baroda after being excluded from the Indian team after the second Test against England. He, however, has been picked for Mumbai's Ranji semifinal against Tamil Nadu starting March 2.
"It was high time the message was given and this strong step by the BCCI will go a long way in restoring the prestige of domestic cricket," he added.
Kapil asserted that it was the duty of established stars to play domestic cricket as they owe their success to their respective states.
"I have always believed in the process of international players making themselves available to play for their respective states. It helps them extend their support to domestic players. Also it is a nice way to pay back for the services rendered by the state association in grooming a player," he said.
Kapil also expressed his gratitude to the BCCI for enhancing the pension of former cricketers, saying it has come as a major relief to families of several yesteryear players.
In 2022, the board had announced a hike in the monthly pensions of former cricketers -- both men and women.
Former first-class men's cricketers, who earlier got Rs 15,000 per month are now getting Rs 30,000, while former Test players, who got Rs 37,500, are now getting Rs 60,000.
Women international players, who received Rs 30,000 prior to the revision are now receiving Rs 52,500, while first-class cricketers who retired before 2003 and were getting Rs 22,500 are now getting Rs 45,000.
"I am also happy that the BCCI has increased the pension amount of the players. This was a much needed boost to those whose family depends on the pension received," added Kapil.
