Earlier, on February 2, Khurana conducted an on-site inspection of the prefabricated shelters being constructed to rehabilitate the affected families migrating due to land subsidence.

Chamoli District Magistrate (DM) Himanshu Khurana on Friday said various cracks had been noticed in 868 buildings of Joshimath. Taking to social media, DM Himanshu tweeted, "Cracks have been noticed in 868 buildings of Joshimath. Out of these, 181 buildings are in unsafe areas.
The dismantling work of Hotel Mount View and Malari Inn is in its final stage." Himanshu Khurana also said that 878 members of 243 disaster-affected families are in relief camps and basic facilities are being provided to them.
Earlier, on February 2, Khurana conducted an on-site inspection of the prefabricated shelters being constructed to rehabilitate the affected families migrating due to land subsidence.

Hundreds of affected people descended on the streets of subsidence-hit Joshimath on Friday to take part in a protest rally against alleged slow pace of efforts to save the sinking town.
The Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti had given the call for the rally to press for demands of permanent rehabilitation and compensation to affected families.
"The urgency necessary to save Joshimath is still missing. Permanent rehabilitation and compensation on the lines of Badrinath and the scrapping of the NTPC project for good are some of the issues which remain unresolved," Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti spokesperson Kamal Raturi said.
The protesters raised slogans as they took out the rally from the Tapovan taxi stand, crossed through the main road and gathered at the Ved Vedang ground in Singhdhar ward.
Local people allege that the digging of a 12-km tunnel for the National Thermal Power Corporation's 520 MW Tapovan Vishnugad hydroelectric project exacerbated the subsidence in Joshimath. The NTPC has denied any link between the project and the subsidence, saying the tunnel is over a kilometre under the ground and not below Joshimath.
Briefing the media on the relief efforts underway in Joshimath, Secretary, Disaster Management, Ranjit Kumar Sinha said the number of houses that have developed cracks stands at 863, while the water discharge in the JP colony area has reduced to 171 LPM.
Around 250 families have been evacuated to temporary relief centres and Rs 3.36 crore distributed among the affected people as interim relief, he said.
Construction of model pre-fabricated shelters continues on the land of the horticulture department in Joshimath, Sinha said, adding it is likely to be completed soon.
Land development work is also in progress for pre-fabricated transition centres in Dhak village of Chamoli district.&nbsp;

Regulator Irdai on Thursday asked insurance companies to take steps for expeditious settlement of claims of loss to property due to subsidence and landslides in the calamity-affected areas in Uttarakhand.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has issued the circular for general insurers in wake of subsidence in Joshimath town of Chamoli district and subsequent evacuation and demolition of properties which have developed cracks.
"As you are aware, subsidence and landslide have caused loss to property in some areas in the State of Uttarakhand. There is an urgent need for the general insurers to take immediate steps to mitigate the hardships of the affected insured population by ensuring immediate registration and settlement of eligible claims," it said.
Irdai has asked the insurers to nominate a senior officer at the company level who would act as a Nodal Officer in the affected districts of Uttarakhand. The nodal officer would be coordinating the receipt, processing, and settlement of all eligible claims.
Insurers have also been asked to engage adequate number of surveyors immediately as required and, if need be, consider engaging surveyors from neighbouring areas as well.
"We request you (insurance companies) to take urgent steps for expeditious settlement of claims in the affected areas and maintain the details of the same," the Irdai's circular said.
Meanwhile, crack meters installed in the damaged houses of Joshimath have registered no further widening of cracks in the last three days, but water discharge from an underground channel near J P Colony has shot up again to 150 litres per minute, a senior official said on Thursday.
Uttarakhand minister Satpal Maharaj said an inquiry will be conducted to find out how multi-storey buildings were allowed to be constructed in Joshimath which has been sinking for at least 20 years.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking the court's intervention to declare the crisis in Uttarakhand's subsidence-hit Joshimath a national disaster.
A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala asked petitioner Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati to approach the Uttarakhand High Court with his petition.
Joshimath, the gateway to famous pilgrimage sites like Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib and international skiing destination Auli, is facing a major challenge due to land subsidence.
The petitioner has contended the subsidence has occurred due to large-scale industrialisation and sought immediate financial assistance and compensation to the affected people.
"No development is needed at the cost of human life and their ecosystem and if any such thing is to happen, then it is the duty of the State and Union government to stop the same immediately at war level," the plea by the Seer said.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea seeking the court's intervention to declare the crisis in Uttarakhand's Joshimath as a national disaster.
According to the cause list of January 16 uploaded on the apex court website, a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala would hear the petition filed by Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati.
On January 10, the top court had refused urgent hearing of the plea, saying there are "democratically elected institutions" to deal with the situation and all important matters should not come to it.
It had listed Saraswati's plea for hearing on January 16.
"Everything important need not come to us. There are democratically elected institutions to look into it. We will list it on January 16," the CJI had said, after the counsel appearing for the petitioner had mentioned the plea and sought its urgent listing.

Days after ISRO shared a study stating that Joshimath sank 5.4 cm in 12 days, the National Disaster Management Authority has directed concerned departments to not interact with media or share any data publicly or on social media, till an 'integrated' final report is submitted by the expert group on the subject.
This was conveyed in an office memo issued on January 13 according to media reports.
According to a report by The Hindu, the State government spoke to ISRO and other departments, including Wadia Institute, IIT Roorkee, CBRI, GIS Kolkata, NIDM New Delhi, IIRS Dehradun, and NGRI Hyderabad, informing them not to to share reports that create panic among residents.
Following the NDMA letter, the ISRO report has been removed from its website.

Explaining its project has no role in the subsidence of the Joshimath in Uttarakhand, NTPC has informed the power ministry that the 12-kilometer long tunnel connected to the Tapovan Vishnugad hydroelectric project is 1 kilometers away from the town and at least a kilometer below the ground.&nbsp;
Experts are blaming NTPC project for gradual sinking of land as cracks developed in hundreds of houses and buildings in Joshimath.&nbsp;
On January 10, the Union Power Ministry summoned NTPC officials to review the subsidence incident in Joshimath. A day later, India's largest electricity-generating company wrote to the ministry explaining its position.
Stating that land subsidence in Joshimath is a very old issue with first observance dating back to 1976, NTPC citing a state government-appointed M C Mishra Committee of that year blaming "hill wash, natural angle of repose, cultivation area because of seepage and soil erosion" for the subsidence/cracks.

Joshimath land sinking | Indian Army temporary relocates troops after some buildings develop minor cracks

Speaking about land subsidence effect on Army buildings in Uttarakhand's Joshimath, Indian Army chief General Manoj Pande said that 25-28 buildings of Army have developed minor cracks and soldiers have been temporarily relocated 

&ldquo;We remain prepared to relocate more units if required, but our operational preparedness remains intact," Pande said in an annual address of the state of the army&rsquo;s operations. &ldquo;There has been no impact to our readiness."

Indian Army Chief Manoj Pande said that some troops have been relocated from areas surrounding Joshimath after cracks developed in around 20 army establishments due to land subsidence.&nbsp;
While Pande didn&rsquo;t give details on how many soldiers would be moved away for safety but said over 20 military installations around the town of Joshimath in the northern state of Uttarakhand have sustained 'medium to minor damage,' reported Bloomberg

As the Uttarakhand government on Tuesday prepared to demolish two hotels badly affected by land subsidence in Joshimath, the hotel owners opposed the "abrupt" move, saying they had no prior information about it. The state government, had on Monday, decided to mechanically demolish 'Mount View' and 'Malari Inn' hotels that developed huge cracks recently and were leaning towards each other, posing a risk to the nearby settlements.
Ranjit Sinha, Secretary, Disaster Management told reporters that the Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee has been roped in for the demolition exercise. The devastated hotel owners said they came to know about the development through newspapers and demanded that a one-time settlement plan should have been offered to them before the decision was made.
"I came to know about it through newspapers this morning. There was no prior notice. If the government demarcated my hotel as unsafe, it should have first come up with a one-time settlement plan before deciding to demolish it," Thakur Singh, who owns Malari Inn, said.

"The SDM told me to be here as he was reaching here by 9 am. I have built this hotel with my sweat and blood. What will happen to me if it is demolished just like that?" Singh, who belongs to Bhotia tribe, told PTI.
Mount View owner Lalmani Semwal expressed similar sentiments.
"It is like slaying a child one has reared through years of hard work in front of his parent," he said.
"We put in all our resources into building this hotel. We paid regular taxes to the government. It said nothing then and now all of a sudden, it comes up with a drastic decision like this. Isn't it violation of human rights? "... at least, we should be offered a one-time settlement plan as compensation on the lines of Badrinath," Semwal said. Meanwhile, power supply lines to the hotels and surrounding areas were cut off by the administration ahead of the demolition move, disrupting electricity supply to around 500 houses in the vicinity.
Chief Secretary S S Sandhu had ordered the demolition of buildings located in high risk zone at Joshimath and speedy evacuation of the affected people, saying "every minute was important".
Joshimath, the gateway to famous pilgrimage sites like Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib and international skiing destination Auli, is facing a major challenge due to land subsidence.
Joshimath is sinking gradually with huge cracks developing in houses, on roads and fields. Many houses have tilted and are sinking, locals said.
