Tensions rise between BCCI and PCB as PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi insists on personally handing over the Asia Cup trophy to India, with ICC meeting next month set to address the standoff.

The BCCI and Pakistan Cricket Board are headed for a showdown at next month's ICC meeting as PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is not budging from his stance of personally handing over the Asia Cup trophy to India in his capacity as head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
In the reply sent to the BCCI and other ACC member nations, Naqvi has insisted that he is willing to organise a ceremony on November 10 in Dubai, where a representative of the BCCI and any available Indian team player can take the trophy from him.
"The ACC trophy rightly belongs to the Indian cricket team and is being held in trust till such time that a BCCI office holder along with any available participating player can collect the same from the ACC President," Naqvi wrote in his reply.
"Such collection would of course be accompanied with much fanfare and coverage as there should be no deviation from established practices and no precedent should be set which undermines the spirit of the game we all love."
The ICC is headed by former BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
Naqvi's reply came after the BCCI's fresh missive to the ACC on the Asia Cup trophy fiasco, which was backed by boards of Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
The response clearly indicates the level of mistrust and tensions between the BCCI and PCB.
"...as regards the remainder of your letter, slanderous as it may be and digressing as it does from the same values you highlighted, the office of the ACC President will not indulge in petty politics that is aimed to pacify select extremist groups," the reply further reads.
"The true state of affairs is that there was never any official communication shared with ACC office or the Tournament Director highlighting any position or concern of the BCCI with respect to prize distribution ceremony.
"It was only when the Ceremony was about to take place and distinguished guests had taken their place on the stage that the BCCI's representative conveyed that the Indian Cricket Team would not be receiving the Asla Cup Trophy and awards. Efforts were made to find a solution to the impasse which resulted in an inordinate delay."
"The ACC president waited along with the distinguished guests for approximately 40 minutes to ensure that the integrity of the presentation ceremony was preserved and was not adversely affected by politics, but in vain," the reply added.
A reliable source in the PCB said that the legal department of the board had already been instructed to prepare a dossier in case the BCCI officials move to have Naqvi censured at the ICC board meeting, an indication of which has already been given by the BCCI if the trophy fiasco is not resolved at the earliest.

With Jay Shah heading the ICC, the BCCI will start the process of electing a new secretary soon. The Indian board members will meet on September 29 in Bengaluru for the 93rd Annual General Body Meeting and are expected to give an update.
The AGM will also coincide with the inauguration of the state-of-the-art National Cricket Academy centre in the outskirts as all the board members will be present in the city.
Currently, the NCA functions at the M Chinnaswamy stadium premises since its inception over two decades back.
While it is unlikely that the election of the new board secretary will take place at the high-profile summit, the date for the Special General Meeting for that purpose could be fixed here.
The appointment of a new secretary was made mandatory after the incumbent Jay Shah was elected unanimously as the ICC Chairman.
However, Shah will not abdicate his present role as the BCCI secretary at the AGM because he has to assume the new office only from December 1.
The other important point in the meeting&rsquo;s 18-point agenda, which has been sent to all the state associations, is the appointment of BCCI&rsquo;s representative to the ICC meetings, as Shah will no longer be available for that role.
Current BCCI president Roger Binny might be discussed for the board&rsquo;s representative to the ICC, or it could fall on the incoming secretary.
But at 69, Binny does not have age on his side with 70 being the upper ceiling to be in administration.

Walking the talk about giving the highest priority to Test cricket, the BCCI has decided to increase the match fee to up to Rs 45 lakh from the existing Rs 15 lakh for all those who play at least seven long-form games per season, Board secretary Jay Shah announced on Saturday.
A Test player, who gets to appear in a possible 10 Tests in a season will be richer by a whopping Rs 4.50 crore, apart from the assured retainer fee that he gets for having an annual central contract.
The incentives will be retrospective and would factor in players who were part of Test cricket during the 2022-23 season.
The decision was taken after some players like Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar snubbed Ranji Trophy cricket to continue training with their IPL teams despite the Board's diktat to priortise red-ball cricket.
Currently, an Indian Test cricketer, who is picked in the playing XI gets Rs 15 lakh while the reserves get Rs 7.5 lakh.
"I am pleased to announce the initiation of the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes," Shah stated on 'X'.
"Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the 'Test Cricket Incentive Scheme' will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at INR 15 lakhs," he further stated.
The BCCI also explained the module considering there could be at least nine Test matches per season.
If a player competes in up to four Tests from a possible nine per season, he would get the existing Rs 15 lakh per game while reserves draw in half of that.
However, a first eleven player will have his match fee doubled to Rs 30 lakh in case he ends up playing at least five to six games, with reserves being rewarded with Rs 15 lakh per game.
However, the moment a player is in the first XI for seven or more games in a season, he will be getting Rs 45 lakh per match with reserves getting Rs 22.5 lakh, which will be more than what the existing match fee (Rs 15 lakh) is for a playing XI cricketer.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Jay Shah on Tuesday attributed the body's decision to host Asia Cup matches in Sri Lanka to teams' reluctance to play ODIs in the UAE heat and abrupt changes at the top of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Shah defended the move after former PCB president Najam Sethi's recent comments in which he mentioned that during his tenure he had suggested that the 2023 Asia Cup be staged in the UAE instead of Sri Lanka, parts of which are experiencing heavy rainfall.
In a statement, Shah said: "The Asia Cup 2022 edition was played in the UAE in the T20 format. It's important to emphasize that the dynamics of a T20 tournament cannot be directly compared to those of a 100-over One-day format.
"In this context, ACC members received feedback from their respective high-performance teams, expressing concerns about playing One-day matches in the UAE in the month of September. Such a schedule could have potentially led to player fatigue and an increased risk of injuries, particularly right before the all-important ICC Cricket World Cup."
The ACC has come under criticism after fans were denied what could have been a thrilling finish to the highly-anticipated match between India and Pakistan at Pallekele on Saturday. Incessant rain led to a washout of the second innings, leaving the two teams to share a point each.
"All the full members, media rights holders, and in-stadia rights holders were initially hesitant to commit to hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan. This reluctance stemmed from concerns related to the security and economic situation prevailing in the country," Shah said further.
"In my capacity as ACC President, I was committed to finding a viable and mutually agreeable solution. To this end, I had accepted the hybrid model that was proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in collaboration with the ACC management.
"However, it's important to note that the leadership of the PCB underwent several changes, and this resulted in some back-and-forth negotiations, particularly regarding crucial aspects such as tax exemption and insurance for matches," Shah added.
Besides Sethi, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag also appeared to take a dig at the ACC for the scheduling of the tournament.
In 'X', formerly Twitter, he had written, "Baarish ke time toh Chai Pakode rakhte hain yaar. Asia cup bhi rakh diya (We have tea and snacks when it rains. Asia Cup has also been scheduled." Rain had interrupted the proceedings of the much-anticipated Asia Cup clash thrice on Saturday evening after India opted to bat first, eventually leading to an abandonment.
The next day, Sethi slammed the scheduling, saying his suggestion to play in the UAE was turned down and "poor excuses" were made to accommodate Sri Lanka.
"Too hot in Dubai, they said. But it was as hot when the Asia Cup was played there last time in Sep 2022 or when IPL was played there in April 2014 and Sep 2020. Politics over sport. Unforgivable!" Sethi had tweeted then.
Meanwhile it has been learnt that the ACC decided to keep the Asia Cup Super 4 and final matches in Colombo itself as the weather has shown signs of improvement.
It has been speculated over the last few days that the Super 4 and final games of the tournament could be shifted to Hambantota after heavy rains lashed the Lankan capital.
Sri Lanka was added as co-hosts alongside original tournament hosts Pakistan under a hybrid model after India refused to play their matches across their western border owing to geopolitical tension between the two countries.
Under the hybrid model, four games were scheduled in Pakistan, and the rest in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi met Asian Cricket Council (ACC) officials in the UAE and now wants to meet the body's president Jay Shah over Asia Cup 2023, according to reports.
According to ANI, Sethi met with ACC officials after the opening ceremony of the International League T20 and expressed his wish to meet Jay Shah, who is also the BCCI secretary, in February.
Sethi has all of his focus on making sure that the 2023 edition of the tournament, to be hosted by Pakistan, is not moved out of his country, the source added.
Last year, Jay Shah said that the tournament will be held at a neutral venue. Following which, the then PCB cheif Ramiz Raja had threatened to pull out of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

According to a PTI report, the PCB chairman is looking to use the ILT20 opening ceremony to work on relations with ACC members and ensure that the Asia Cup is held as scheduled in Pakistan later this year.&nbsp;
Sethi wants to discuss the hosting issue with Shah after both parties were involved in a war of words over the ACC cricket calendar announcement last week.
However, there is no confirmation yet from the BCCI whether its top bosses or any other office-bearers with attend the opening ceremony or not.

Drama ensued even after Asian Cricket Council issued a clarification after PCB chief Najam Sethi called the announcement of 2023 and 2024 Asia Cup calendars unilateral. Questioning their clarification, PCB thanked ACC for confirming that the decision was taken unilaterally. As per PCB, the recommendations need to be approved by ACC Board which has neither met since 13 Dec 2022 nor granted approvals through circular resolution. ACC had earlier stated that the calendar was approved by its Development Committee and Finance &amp; Marketing Committee in a meeting held on December 13th, 2022, and was later sent for approval through mail to the concerned boards.&nbsp;

The Asian Cricket Council has responded to PCB chief Najam Sethi's allegations that the ACC cricket calendar was unilaterally decided by President Jay Shah.
In a statement, the ACC clarified that the calendar was communicated to all member nations through an email on Dec 22 and that PCB made no comments or suggested any modifications during that time.
It further stated that Najam Sethi's comments on social media are 'baseless'.

BCCI's new policy towards managing the workloads of players in the lead-up to the 50-over World Cup in India this October and November will witness many players being rested for the IPL 2023.

In its review meeting, BCCI top brass shortlisted 20 players who will be rotated till the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be played in October, later this year. According to reports, during the review meeting, one of the recommendations was that among these key players, those who are injury prone or have had recent histories of injuries could be rested for parts or for most of the IPL 2023.&nbsp;
This, as per reports, is in accordance with BCCI's new policy which aims at managing the workloads and shifting the focus solely towards the major ICC tournaments.&nbsp; The recommendation has been likely made in light of India's recent struggle with injuries that have hurt them the most in major tournaments in 2022. India's campaign at the T20 World Cup 2022 &amp; Asia Cup was marred with injuries with Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Deepak Chahar, all ruled out with major injuries.&nbsp;
