Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has filed a request for a six-month visitor visa to stay in the US, indicating he may have no immediate intention of returning home, where legal issues await.
The application was first reported by The Financial Times, citing Bolsonaro's immigration lawyer, Felipe Alexandre. Contacted by The Associated Press, the lawyer's firm, AG Immigration, confirmed the report.
Bolsonaro left Brazil for Florida on Dec. 30, two days before the inauguration of his leftist rival, Luiz In&aacute;cio Lula da Silva. The ceremony proceeded without incident, but a week later thousands of Bolsonaro's die-hard supporters stormed the capital and trashed the top government buildings demanding that Lula's election be overturned.
Bolsonaro is being investigated for whether he had any role in inciting that uprising. It is just one of several probes targeting the former president and that pose a legal headache upon his eventual homecoming, and which could strip him of his eligibility in future races &mdash; or worse.
For the first time in his more than three-decade political career as a lawmaker then as president, he no longer enjoys the special legal protection that requires any trial be held at the Supreme Court.
It has been widely assumed &mdash; though not confirmed &mdash; that Bolsonaro entered the U.S. on an A-1 visa reserved for sitting heads of state. If so, he would have 30 days from the end of his presidential term to either leave the U.S. or adjust his status with the Department of Homeland Security.
Meantime, the shape of his political future and his potential return to Brazil has been a matter of rumor and speculation.
Bolsonaro's calculus appears to be to distance himself from the radicals whose destruction in the capital could implicate him in the short term, with the aim of some day returning to lead the opposition, said Mario S&eacute;rgio Lima, a political analyst at Medley Advisors.
&ldquo;He is giving it some time, staying away a bit from the country at a moment when he can begin to suffer legal consequences for his supporters' attitudes,&rdquo; said Lima. &ldquo;I don't think the fact of him staying away is enough. The processes will continue, but maybe he thinks he can at least avoid some sort of revenge punishment.&rdquo; Bolsonaro has been staying in a home outside Orlando, Florida, and video has shown him snapping photos with supporters in the gated community and ambling around inside a supermarket.
In the wake of the rampage in the Brazilian capital this month, a group of 46 Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to President Joe Biden demanding Bolsonaro's visa be revoked.
&ldquo;The United States must not provide shelter for him, or any authoritarian who has inspired such violence against democratic institutions,&rdquo; they wrote.
Bolsonaro's son, a senator, told reporters at an event this weekend that he was not sure when his father would return to Brazil.
"It could be tomorrow, it could be in six months, he might never return. I don't know. He's relaxing,&rdquo; Sen. Fl&aacute;vio Bolsonaro said.
Asked whether Bolsonaro has filed any request for documentation or help with visa processes, Brazil's foreign ministry referred AP to US authorities. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services referred AP to the State Department, which has repeatedly declined comment to questions about Bolsonaro's visa status in the US.&nbsp;

The head of Brazil's electoral authority on Wednesday rejected the request from President Jair Bolsonaro and his political party to annul ballots cast on most electronic voting machines, which would have overturned the October 30 election.
Alexandre de Moraes had issued a prior ruling that implicitly raised the possibility that Bolsonaro's Liberal Party could suffer from such a challenge.
He conditioned analysis of the request on the presentation of an amended report to include results from the first electoral round, on October 2, in which the party won more seats in both congressional houses than any other, and he established a 24-hour deadline.
Earlier on Wednesday, party president Valdemar Costa and lawyer Marcelo de Bessa held a press conference and said there would be no amended report.
&ldquo;The complete bad faith of the plaintiff's bizarre and illicit request ... was proven, both by the refusal to add to the initial petition and the total absence of any evidence of irregularities and the existence of a totally fraudulent narrative of the facts,&rdquo; de Moraes wrote in his decision hours later.
He also ordered the suspension of government funds for the Liberal Party's coalition until a fine of 23 million reais (USD 4.3 million) for bad faith litigation is paid.
On Tuesday, de Bessa filed a 33-page request on behalf of Bolsonaro and Costa citing a software bug in the majority of Brazil's machines &mdash; they lack individual identification numbers in their internal logs &mdash; to argue all votes they recorded should be nullified. De Bessa said that doing so would leave Bolsonaro with 51 per cent of the remaining valid votes.
Neither Costa nor de Bessa have explained how the bug might have affected election results.
Independent experts consulted by The Associated Press said that, while newly discovered, it doesn't affect reliability and each voting machine is still readily identifiable through other means. In his ruling, de Moraes noted the same.
He also wrote that the challenge to the vote appeared aimed at incentivizing anti-democratic protest movements and creating tumult, and ordered the investigation of Costa and the consultant hired to conduct an evaluation.
&ldquo;De Moraes' message to the political establishment is: the game is over. Questioning the result of the elections is not fair play, and people and institutions who do that will be punished harshly,&rdquo; said Maur&iacute;cio Santoro, a political science professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro.
In the press conference on Wednesday, Costa said his intention is merely to prevent the results of the 2022 vote from haunting Brazil into the future.
The electoral authority on October 30 ratified the victory of Bolsonaro's nemesis, leftist former President Luiz In&aacute;cio Lula da Silva, and even many of the president's allies quickly accepted the results.
Protesters in cities across the country have steadfastly refused to do the same, particularly with Bolsonaro declining to concede.
Bolsonaro spent more than a year claiming Brazil's electronic voting system is prone to fraud, without ever presenting evidence.
The South American nation began using an electronic voting system in 1996 and election security experts consider such systems less secure than hand-marked paper ballots, because they leave no auditable paper trail. But Brazil's system has been closely scrutinized by domestic and international experts who have never found evidence of it being exploited to commit fraud.(AP)

In a speech at the presidential residence lasting less than two minutes on Tuesday, he stopped short of conceding to da Silva, but said he would continue to obey the constitution. He also encouraged protests by his supporters, as long as they remained peaceful.
Immediately afterward, his chief of staff told reporters Bolsonaro had authorised him to begin the process of handing over power, while later in the day the president reportedly told members of the Supreme Court that his election battle against da Silva had come to an end.
&ldquo;It is over. So, let's look ahead," he said, according to Supreme Court Justice Luiz Edson Fachin, who met privately with the conservative leader. Fachin made his remarks in a video broadcast by Brazilian news outlets.
Much like former US President Donald Trump, whom Bolsonaro openly admires, he has claimed that electronic voting machines are prone to fraud. He hasn't provided any proof, even when ordered to do so by the electoral court.
Many of his supporters are also questioning the results, and truckers who back the president have erected hundreds of blockades around the country to protest the election's outcome.
On Wednesday morning, highway police said that they had removed 630 blockades, with more than 150 still in place.
At one roadblock in Sao Paulo state on Tuesday, protesters set tires on fire. Huge lines of cars could be seen snaking along the highway. In Itaborai, a region in Rio de Janeiro state, an Associated Press reporter saw truck drivers kneeling in front of police officers and refusing to evacuate.
Sao Paulo Gov. Rodrigo Garcia said on Tuesday that the time for negotiations was over, and he was not ruling out the use of force to dismantle the barriers.
But Bolsonaro supporters continued to resist. Users on social media, including in multiple Telegram and WhatsApp chat groups, shared demands that the military take the streets, or that Congress and the Supreme Court be disbanded and the president remain in office.&nbsp;
