Brazil riots: PM Modi reacts to 'news of vandalism', says 'deeply concerned' after govt buildings attacked in Brasilia

Following violence and rioting in Brazil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern at the situation.

PM Modi on 9 January 2023 said that "news of rioting and vandalism against state institutions" was deeply concerning. He added that "democratic traditions must be respected by everyone", and extended "full support" to Brazilian authorities.

The Brazilian presidential palace, Supreme Court, and Congress buildings were attacked by alleged supporters of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro on 8 January 2023 over his election defeat.

Bolsonaro said allegations that he incited the violence were "baseless". He also condemned the "pillaging and invasion" of public buildings. Bolsonaro is currently in USA's Florida.

Earlier, Brazil's incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had said that Bolsonaro encouraged the uprising.
