Russia on Wednesday said it is hoping for quick resolution of the issue relating to India's call for return of Indians recruited into the Russian Army as support staff and asserted their recruitment was purely a commercial matter.
In first comments on the issue from the Russian government, Russia's Charge d'affaires Roman Babushkin said Moscow never wanted the Indians to be part of its Army and their number is insignificant in the context of the conflict.
"We are on the same side with the Indian government on the issue... We hope that the issue will be resolved soon," he said at a media briefing while responding to a question.
Babushkin's remarks came a day after Russia promised to ensure early release and return to home of the Indian nationals working in the Russian military as support staff after Prime Minister Narendra Modi "very strongly" raised the issue with President Vladimir Putin.
Babushkin noted that the issue should not be politicised.
"Let us be very clear, we have never wanted Indians to be part of the Russian Army. You would never see any announcement by Russian authorities on this," he said.
The Russian diplomat said most of the Indians were recruited under a commercial framework as they wanted to "make money".
The number of Indians -- 50, 60 or 100 people -- does not make any significance in terms of the wider conflict.
"They are there purely for commercial reasons and we did not want to recruit them," he said.
Babushkin said most of the Indians recruited as support staff are working illegally as they do not have appropriate visas to work.
He said most of them came to Russia on tourist visas.
Asked if the families of those killed would be given compensation and Russian citizenship, Babushkin said that it "should happen anyway as per the contractual obligations".
On Tuesday, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said in Moscow that the Russian side promised early discharge of all Indian nationals from the service of the Russian Army.
"The prime minister strongly raised the issue of early discharge of Indian nationals who have been misled into the service of the Russian Army. This was taken up strongly by the prime minister and the Russian side promised early discharge of all Indian nationals," he said.
It is learnt that Modi raised the issue during his informal talks with Putin over dinner at the Russian leader's dacha or country home on Monday evening.
Kwatra said the two sides will work on how expeditiously the Indians can be brought back home.
Last month, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the issue of Indian nationals serving with the Russian Army remains a matter of "utmost concern" and demanded action from Moscow over it.
On June 11, India said two Indian nationals, who were recruited by the Russian Army, had recently been killed in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which took the number of such deaths to four.
Following the deaths of two Indians, the MEA demanded a "verified stop" to further recruitment of Indian nationals by the Russian Army.
In a strongly-worded statement, it said India demanded that there be a "verified stop to any further recruitment of Indian nationals by the Russian Army and that such activities would not be in "consonance with our partnership".
In March, 30-year-old Hyderabad resident Mohammed Asfan succumbed to injuries sustained while serving with Russian troops on the frontlines with Ukraine.
In February, Hemal Ashwinbhai Mangua, a 23-year-old resident of Surat in Gujarat, died in a Ukrainian air strike while serving as a "security helper" in the Donetsk region.
Modi was on a two-day high-profile visit to Russia from Monday to hold the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with Putin.

The Ministry of External Affairs on February 29 said that at least 20 Indians were enlisted in the Russian Army to fight against Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Indian government is in touch with Russian authorities seeking early release of the Indians stuck in the war zone.&nbsp;
Responding to a query on how many Indians have joined the Russian Army, Jaiswal responded, "It is our understanding that there are 20 people who've gone there to work as support staff or as helpers with the Russian Army. These are the people who have contacted us, and that is our understanding that this is the number that we have there."
The response came after reports emerged that dozens of Indians looking for jobs were allegedly duped into joining the Russian military.&nbsp;

Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated across the world on different days and it is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon which is supposed to denote the start of the Shawwal month in the lunar Islamic calendar.
It marks the end of the fasting month of Ramzan.

Amid the sustained firing in the Sudanese capital as tensions escalated between the military and the country's powerful paramilitary forces, Indians in the Africa nation have been asked to take shelter and remain indoors.
A tweet from the Indian Embassy in Khartoum read, "In view of reported firings and clashes, all Indians are advised to take utmost precautions, stay indoors and stop venturing outside with immediate effect. Please also stay calm and wait for updates."
The firing could be heard in a number of areas, including central Khartoum and the neighbourhood of Bahri.
Tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, as the paramilitary is known, have escalated in recent months, forcing a delay in the signing of an internationally backed deal with political parties to revive the country's democratic transition.
In a statement issued Saturday morning, the RSF accused the army of attacking its forces at one of its bases in South Khartoum.
The military used light and heavy weapons in the attack, it said.

According to the fifth round of NFHS conducted between 2019 and 2021, about 6.4 percent women and 4 percent men in the age group of 15-49 are obese. About 17.6 percent women and 18.9 percent men in the same age group are overweight but not obese. This means that almost a quarter of young women in India are overweight.&nbsp;
<h3>Attention given to age in the survey&nbsp;</h3>
According to the survey, in 2019-21, on an average, 12.6 per cent women in the top wealth group in India were found to be obese. Age was also taken into consideration in the survey and it found that 11 percent women between ages 40 and 49 are overweight.&nbsp;

A study called &lsquo;Switch Off&rsquo; conducted with Cybermedia Research on &lsquo;Smartphones and their impact on human relationships 2022' found that 67 per cent of people confessed using their smart phones while being with their partners, 89 per cent said they spend much less time conversing with their spouses and 88 per cent agreed that increased usage of smartphones is affecting their marriage.&nbsp;

The study has been conducted based on a survey done on 1,000 smartphone users across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Pune, which concluded that on an average, each smartphone user has 1.5 hours of free time every day that they mostly spend on their phones instead of spending time with family.&nbsp; &nbsp; 88 per cent users spend their leisure time on their smartphones and 89 per cent feel the urge to use them as soon as they get some free time.&nbsp;

1 Indian missing, 10 stranded in quake-hit Turkey: MEA

The Centre on Wednesday informed that an Indian who had visited Turkey on a business trip has gone missing following earthquake that has killed more than 8,500 people in the country

Ten Indians are stuck in remote parts of Turkey after the country was hit by two "biggest natural disaster" earthquakes, but they are safe while one citizen is missing, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma said.
"There are 10 individuals who are stuck in some remote parts of the affected area but they are safe. We have one Indian national missing, who was on a business visit to Turkey's Malatya. And he has not been traced for the last two days. We are in touch with his family and the company in Bengaluru," Verma said during the special briefing on 'Operation Dost.
He also said that the mission, which was set up in Ankara, had received 75 per cent of calls asking for more information and assistance.
While addressing the presser, Verma gave more details about the Indian community residing in Turkey. There are 3,000 Indian nationals in Turkey, about 1,850 residing in and around Istanbul about 250 in Ankara, and the rest of the others are residing across the country. "The Indian community in Turkey is in fatal danger... Three Indians approached us and have moved to a safer habitation and are doing all right," Secretary (West) said.
While giving the details about the medical assistance that India is providing to Turkey and Syria, National Disaster Response Force DG Atul Karwal said that under 'Operation Dost,' the first team landed at Adana airport and the second was diverted to Urfa because Adana was crowded. Both of them are being converged at Nurdagi which is in Gaziantep Province, one of the worst affected areas.
"The third team's requirement was sent to us. It was under preparation in Varanasi and was airlifted and brought to Delhi today. I met them at Hindon Airport. In the next few hours, they would depart with 51 rescuers, a canine complement and 4 vehicles," Karwal said.
"We have more teams in reserve because we don't know how many more teams will be required. The damage is extensive across a very large area and we are prepared to render whatever help any additional teams that India can provide to Turkey in this time of crisis," he added.&nbsp;

The plane flying from Pokhara to Jomson had gone out of contact while flying over the Lete area of Mustang district on May 29 morning. ANI quoted police as saying that locals from Titi area had informed them about an "unusual sound, like a bang".
The Indians on board were identified as Ashok Kumar Tripathi, Dhanush Tripathi, Ritika Tripathi, and Vaibhawi Tripathi - members of a family from Mumbai in Maharashtra.

The Indian high commission has issued advisory for students affected by closure of three institutions who are reportedly on the brink of bankruptcy.
The advisory has been issued to Indian students studying at M College, CED College and CCSQ College in Quebec.
The high commission in a statement said that the provincial government of Quebec has advised that the affected students may directly contact their colleges, and in the event that if they find any difficulty in reimbursement or the transfer of fees, they can file a complaint with Quebec government's higher education ministry. 
Reports said in view of the closing down of the three colleges, protests and rallies are being carried out by several Indian students. The three colleges reportedly collected millions of dollars in the name of tuition fees from students and later announced a shutdown.
Since then, the high commission has also been providing constant support to the affected students and further suggested a resolution to the issue.
