US advises Indian students on maintaining visa status amid tighter policy enforcement under Trump administration.

Amid heightened enforcement of immigration policies under the Trump administration, the US government has issued a warning to Indian nationals studying at American institutions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their student status to ensure eligibility for future visas. The advisory highlighted that students who neglect their academic commitments&mdash;by skipping classes, withdrawing, or leaving their study programs without notifying their institutions&mdash;risk having their student visas revoked.
In an announcement on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the US Embassy in India urged students to comply with the terms of their visas and maintain their student status diligently. The post stated, "If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues."
In a previous post, the Embassy also warned that overstaying one's authorized period in the United States could result in deportation and potentially lead to a permanent travel ban to the country.
This warning arrives shortly after a significant legal development in which a federal judge in California, US District Judge Jeffrey S. White, issued a temporary injunction preventing the Trump administration from stripping international students of their legal status while ongoing legal challenges are adjudicated. The order, issued in Oakland, prohibits the government from detaining or relocating students based on their legal status until the resolution of the case, as reported by the Associated Press.
It is important to note that students remain subject to arrest for reasons unrelated to their immigration status, particularly if convicted of a serious and violent crime that carries a prison sentence exceeding one year.

At least 5 students with Indian roots have been found dead in the US since January 2024.

India&rsquo;s external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal doused fire on claims that India-origin students were being targeted in the US. The MEA representative said that the five killings reported this year were not interconnected.
&ldquo;There are 5 Indian students who have died...that also includes students from India diaspora. 2 are India nationals and rest 3 are of Indian origin but US nationals,&rdquo; Jaiswal said in a press conference on February 8.
The MEA spokesperson also clarified that there was no &ldquo;foul play&rdquo; in the killing of Shreyas Reddy, who was found dead in Ohio&rsquo;s Cincinnati. However, India still awaits the final medical reports provided by US authorities.
Last month, 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini was hammered to death by a homeless drug addict in Georgia. Syed Mazahir Ali, pursuing a Masters in IT, was brutally attacked by unidentified men near his house in Chicago.
Sameer Kamath, an Indian-origin student, was found dead in the woods in Indiana this week. Authorities said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The students were identified as G Dinesh (22) from Wanaparthy in Telangana and Nikesh (21) from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh.

Two students found dead in US under suspicious circumstances

The students were identified as G Dinesh (22) from Wanaparthy in Telangana and Nikesh (21) from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh.

Two students - one from Wanaparthy in Telangana and another from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh - were found dead in their Connecticut accommodation in the US recently, a family member said on Monday.
The students were identified as G Dinesh (22) from Wanaparthy in Telangana and Nikesh (21) from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh.
Family members of the Telangana student are clueless about the cause of his death and also of his roommate's.
"Dinesh's friends who live in a nearby room called us on Saturday night and informed us about his death and his roommate's. We have no clue as to how he died," Dinesh's family members said.
According to a family member, Dinesh went to Hartford, Connecticut in the US for higher studies on December 28, 2023 while Nikesh reached a few days later.
Incidentally, they had common friends and became roommates after going to the US.
A member of Dinesh's family noted that they have sought the help of Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to bring back Dinesh's mortal remains. Wanaparthy MLA Megha Reddy has also chipped in to help bring back Dinesh's body.&nbsp;
Further, a member of Dinesh's family said they had no contact with Nikesh's family members as the two went to the US only recently.
Similarly, even the Srikakulam district administration does not have any information on Nikesh yet. Srikakulam Police Special Branch DSP K Balaraju noted that even the district collectorate did not receive information on Nikesh or his family members.
Expressing grief over the death of the student, Wanaparthy MLA T Megha Reddy met the deceased student's family members in Wanaparthy town and conveyed his condolences.
The MLA spoke to Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy with regard to bringing the student's dead body to India from the United States.
The Chief Minister responded positively and stated that arrangements would be made to bring back the body to his native place.
