While many events have been planned, front and center in all the festivities is the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign, with the Cultural Ministry aiming to hoist the flag in 20 crore homes of India. But did you know there was a time when it was illegal for an ordinary citizen to hoist the tricolour?  Vikram Chandra discusses the history of hoisting the flag in India with experts.

Ukraine marks Independence Day six months after start of war

A small number of residents gathered at Kyiv's central square, where destroyed Russian tanks and mobile artillery were put on display over the weekend.

Residents of Kyiv woke up to air raid sirens as Ukraine observed its Independence Day on Wednesday, six months since the start of the Russian invasion.
Authorities in the capital banned large-scale gatherings until Thursday, fearing the national holiday might bring particularly heavy Russian missile attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the public to be vigilant.
&ldquo;Russian provocations and brutal strikes are a possibility,&rdquo; Zelenskyy said in a statement. &ldquo;Please strictly follow the safety rules. Please observe the curfew. Pay attention to the air sirens. Pay attention to official announcements. And remember: we must all achieve victory together.&rdquo; A small number of residents gathered at Kyiv's central square, where destroyed Russian tanks and mobile artillery were put on display over the weekend, and the national anthem is played every day at 7 a.m. local time.
&ldquo;I can't sleep at night because of what I see and hear about what is being done in Ukraine," a retiree who identified herself only by her first name, Tetyana, said, her voice shaking with emotion.
&ldquo;This is not a war. It is the destruction of the Ukrainian people," she said.
Wednesday's holiday commemorates Ukraine's 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.
A car bombing outside Moscow that killed the 29-year-old daughter of right-wing Russian political theorist Alexander Dugin on Saturday heightened fears that Russia might intensify attacks on Ukraine this week.
Russian officials have blamed Ukraine for the death of Darya Dugina, a nationalist Russian TV commentator. The car bomb exploded after she had attended a patriotic festival with her father, whom was widely believed to have been the intended target.
The Ukrainian government has denied any involvement.

The 'Missile Man of India' and former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam first made his mark as ISRO project director when the first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) followed by a slew of other successful missile launch including Agni- India's first intermediate-range ballistic missile. Dr Kalam's tenure as President from 2002-2005 is fondly remembered for the inclination and equation he shared with kids.

 

Agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan regarded as 'Father of Green Revolution' is the man who transformed Indian agriculture in the 60s to boost production of rice and wheat with the introduction of hybrid varieties and synthetic fertilisers and insecticides. This increased rice production and caused a decrease in imports which had spiked in the wake of drought from 1964-70.
Another hero in the list is Bezwada Wilson who is spearheading the Safai Karamchari movement to eradicate manual scavenging in India. Time and again people working in the septic tanks and sewers have died due to the hazardous gases but not much has been done for them. Wilson's campaign against manual scavenging challenges the lackdaisical government approach as he continues to fight the casteist order and the non-implementation of laws meant to protect these people.
Kailash Satyarthi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner got the nation rid of child labour by orchestrating the liberation of over 90,000 children in India from child labour, slavery and trafficking since 1980 when he founded the Bachpan Bachao AndolanHe continues his fight for quality education to children. 
Lawyers Menaka Guruswamy and Arundhati Katju led the fight for the repeal of colonial era Section 377 which criminalized gay sex. A 5-judge bench of Supreme Court in 2018  had struck down the law saying it violated the consitutional right to equality. The lawyer-duo couple later came out as a gay couple

This unsung hero is spearheading a nationwide movement to abolish the dehumanizing practice of manual scavenging in India. Bezwada Wilson's Safai Karamchari movement aims to fight for the rights of septic tank workers who die due to hazardous gases. The campaign challenges the lackdaisical government approach and the stinking legacy of casteist stigma. Despite the practice being banned in 25 years, it remains a thing. Even as India completes its 75 years, about 535 sewer workers have died &nbsp;in the last 5 years, Wilson told The Wire
Kailash Satyarthi
Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi has been instrumental in the liberation of over 85,000 children in India from exploitation, slavery and trafficking since the 1980s. His Bachpan Bachao Andolan set the roadmap for &nbsp;child rights and education. He continues his fight for quality education to children. As per a report, Satyarthi's NGO saved 1600 trafficked children from &nbsp;'situaions of exploitation' during the 2020 COVID-19 induced lockdown. The child rights activist, as of 2014 freed about 83,000 children from slavery
Lawyers Menaka Guruswamy and Arundhati Katju&nbsp; The lawyer-duo fought for the repeal of colonial era Section 377 which criminalized consensual gay sex. A 5-judge bench of Supreme Court in 2018 struck down the law saying it violated the consitutional right to equality. The landmark judgement overturning the archaic law was possible due the campaign orchesrated by Menaka and Arundati. In 2019, the lawyer-duo came out as a couple.

It wasn’t the first time that the Indian team was winning a Gold in Olympics in Hockey, rather the 4th consecutive time. But what made the 1948 Hockey Olympics win a special one is that this was Independent India’s first-ever victory. The Indian Tricolor was unfurled on a world stage in place of the Union Jack. While the scars were still bloody, while the new country was still figuring out its way, India overcame internal regionalism and defied all odds to win the most memorable Gold on August 12th, 1948 ironically after beating Britain 4-0 in the final at their home.

In the first-ever Asian Games, hosts India were declared the winners, 1-0. India has had a bitter sour relationship with football, but 1951 kick-started India’s most successful era in the sport. As bizarre as it may sound, India who felt the pressure due to a biased audience got the cheer and support from Pakistan’s hockey team who had defeated India a day earlier to win gold.

Militant attack in Manipur on Independence Day thwarted, 7 arrested

Assam Rifles received inputs about a plot to target government installations and security forces with explosives during the Independence Day celebrations.

Seven armed militants of the banned People's Liberation Army (PLA) were arrested from different parts of Manipur ahead of Independence Day, police said on Sunday.
The Assam Rifles received inputs on Saturday morning about a plot to target government installations and security forces with explosives during the Independence Day celebrations, Superintendent of Police of Thoubal district H Jogeshchandra said at a press conference.
"A joint team of Thoubal district police and 16 Assam Rifles rushed to Yairipok Bazaar, cordoned off the area and began a search operation," he said.
"Similar operations were also carried out at multiple places in Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching and Thoubal districts," he said.
The security forces arrested seven militants, and also held a minor with weapons and explosives, the officer said.
"Following investigations, it was revealed they have been targetting non-locals in the valley districts, and were involved in the killing of two non-locals in June and July at Kakching and Andro Huikap, respectively," he said.
A 9 mm pistol with magazine, a Berreta pistol with magazine, 35 live 9 mm rounds and two hand grenades were seized, Jogeshchandra said.
The operation is continuing in different parts of the state ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, police said, adding that security has been beefed up.

Long before the ongoing trend of dubbing protests as international conspiracy... there have been glorious people's movements that we need to take a relook at in the 75th year of Independence.
There were a series of language protests after the independence which led to the creation of states on linguistic lines, those were about the aspirations of people to get their due representation and identity in the India story.
1973 saw the famous and poignant Chipko Movement, led by environment activist Sunderlal Bahuguna. Based on Gandhian principles, the Chipko Movement saw people protesting against deforestation by hugging trees to stop them from being cut.
1975 to 1977, India rose against tyranny as one after Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency. The common desire to preserve democracy blurred political, religious and geographical boundaries as India fought back its way to democracy.
In 1980, when the government decided to replace the natural sal forest with highly valued teak, the tribals of Bihar came out in strong numbers to protest against this decision. Having started in Bihar, the movement spread to other states like Odisha and Jharkhand too.
The early 80s also saw a movement against undocumented immigrants in Assam. It was a revolution of the indigenous people of the state to protect their rights, their homeland against the alleged illegal migrants who were penetrating into the state for years.
Narmada Bachao Aandolan that started in 1985 was to protest against a large number of dams being contrasted near Narmada river. It brought a large number of adivasis, farmers, environmentalists, and human rights activists together.
When anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare began a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on April 5, 2011, the whole nation came together and stood by him. The movement against corruption proved to be the main cause for the downfall of the Congress-led UP.
One of the most important protest in independent India was the Nirbhaya movement, led by youngsters in 2012 after the brutal gangrape and murder of a young girl in Delhi. Independence Day 2022: how the tricolour was adopted in its present form, a look at its journey 

The Indian flag underwent several changes before it was adopted in its present form. 
From having red, green, and white bands, and a spinning wheel to having saffron, white and green bands and the Ashok Chakra,
here's a look at the journey of the tricolour with a history of several decades preceding independence. 





The first design of the flag proposed in 1921 consisted of two red, green bands to symbolise the two major communities - Hindus and Muslims, with a white band representing peace and other communities and a spinning wheel symbolising the country&rsquo;s progress. &nbsp;

When we think of the flag of India, the colours saffron, white, green, and blue come to our mind. But did you know, that the first design of the tricolour proposed in 1921 consisted of two red and green bands to symbolise the two major communities of the country - Hindus and Muslims, with a white band representing peace as well as the rest of the communities and a spinning wheel symbolising the country&rsquo;s progress. &nbsp;
The design, largely attributed to freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya, went through several changes and it was in 1931 that the Congress Committee met in Karachi and adopted the tricolour as our national flag. But red was replaced with saffron and the order of the colours was shuffled. &nbsp;
The flag was to be free of religious interpretation. Hence in its present form, the saffron on top symbolises &ldquo;strength and courage&rdquo;, white in the middle represents &ldquo;peace and truth&rdquo; and green at the bottom stands for &ldquo;fertility, growth, and auspiciousness of the land&rdquo;. The Ashok Chakra with 24 spokes replaced the spinning wheel or charkha to symbolise &ldquo;life in movement and death in stagnation&rdquo;.&nbsp;

Finally, it was on July 22, 1947 that the members of the Constituent Assembly of India met in the Constitution Hall in Delhi, and officially adopted the national flag for free India.&nbsp;
It was proposed that &ldquo;the National Flag of India shall be horizontal tricolour of deep saffron (kesari), white and dark green in equal proportion.&rdquo; The white band was to have a wheel in navy blue, which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka.&nbsp;
And the final design of the Indian National Flag was hoisted by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on August 16, 1947, at Red Fort, with a history of several decades preceding independence.&nbsp;

It is not entirely illegal to wear tricolour as part of our attire to celebrate Independence Day. However, it should be donned tastefully, without disrespecting the National Flag.

Time and again there have been instances where people unintentionally got in trouble for wearing tricolour in the spirit of patriotism.&nbsp;
Back in 2014, Bollywood actor Mallika Sherawat was booked for disrespecting the national flag. She had wrapped a tricolour on her body for a movie poster. In 2017, Priyanka Chopra was also brutally trolled on the Internet when she chose to wear a tricolour scarf to celebrate her love for the nation.&nbsp;
Later, in 2020 after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, people started selling and wearing tricolour masks around Independence Day. This was greatly opposed by the Indian policymakers and such masks were banned across the country.
So, what does the law say about wearing the three colours as a part of the outfit?&nbsp;
In 2005, the Lok Sabha passed a bill that allowed Indian citizens to wear the tricolour as part of their attire, if worn respectably.&nbsp;
As per the law, it is illegal to wear the tricolour anywhere below the waist and it cannot be used in items of daily use such as cushions, handkerchiefs and undergarments. Offence related to disobeying the code could lead to imprisonment of minimum one year.
So, before choosing your Independence Day outfit this year, remember that while it is not entirely illegal to wear the tricolours, it is important to do so with reverence.&nbsp;
You can try out a tricoloured t-shirt, saree, dupatta, or even incorporate it in accessories like a turban, earrings and bangles to showcase your love for the country. You can also wear the tricolour in any form above the waist without the Ashoka Chakra as it will not be considered offensive.&nbsp;

August 15, a day we Indians celebrate our independence from the shackles of colonial rule. Have you ever wondered why this particular date was chosen as D-day for India? You must be thinking that there&rsquo;s some grand story behind it, probably something to do with the decades-long freedom struggle of India.
Sorry to disappoint you, but our date of independence is deeply rooted in colonialism, related to World War II, and was left at the discretion of one man &ndash; Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India.
In fact, many astrologers at the time had flagged August 15 as an inauspicious date for India which is why the country&rsquo;s Constituent Assembly met at 11 pm on August 14, 1947, to celebrate independence. Hence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru&rsquo;s famous &ldquo;Tryst with destiny&rdquo; speech wherein he says, &ldquo;At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.&rdquo;
But all hail Lord Mountbatten!
He was appointed by the British parliament to oversee the transfer of power to India by June 30, 1948. But communal disturbances in the country prompted him to pre-pone the year of independence to 1947. At that time, Mountbatten claimed that by advancing the date, he was ensuring that there would be no bloodshed. But he was to be proven wrong.
Based on Mountbatten&rsquo;s inputs, the Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, and passed on July 18 paving the way for the end of the British rule in India, on August 15, 1947. This date was chosen as Lord Mountbatten considered it to be a &lsquo;lucky day&rsquo; for him. Why, because it was on this date in 1945 that the Japanese Army surrendered to the Allies during World War II.
Mountbatten was quoted as saying in the non-fiction book Freedom at Midnight, &ldquo;The date I chose came out of the blue. I chose it in reply to a question (in the British parliament). I was determined to show I was master of the whole event. When they asked had we set a date, I knew it had to be soon. I hadn&rsquo;t worked it out exactly then &mdash; I thought it had to be about August or September and I then went out to the 15th August. Why? Because it was the second anniversary of Japan&rsquo;s surrender.&rdquo;

Delhi Police on Friday arrested six people for possessing 2,000 live cartridges ahead of 75th Independence Day celebrations.
Prima facie, all accused appear to be part of a criminal network, police said
Of the six arrested, two have been identified as Rashid and Ajmal. Another accused who reportedly supplied ammuntion hails from Dehradun, Uttarakhand 
The police added that a total of 2251 live cartridges have been recovered as it hinted at the possibility of a terror angle 
The network was busted after police got a tip-off from an auto-rickshaw driver who had dropped two accused at Delhi's Anand Vihar railway station.  
The Indian Express reported that cartridges were being taken to Lucknow and Jaunpur and that the police probe is on to nab the main accused.

The network was busted after police got a tip-off from an auto-rickshaw driver who had dropped two of the accused at Delhi's Anand Vihar railway station. &nbsp;

Delhi Police on Friday arrested six people for possessing 2,000 live cartridges ahead of 75th Independence Day celebrations.
Prima facie, all accused appear to be part of a criminal network, police said
Of the six arrested, two have been identified as Rashid and Ajmal. Another accused who reportedly supplied ammuntion hails from Dehradun, Uttarakhand&nbsp;
The police added that a total of 2251 live cartridges have been recovered and they are not ruling out a terror angle
The network was busted after police got a tip-off from an auto-rickshaw driver who had dropped two of the accused at Delhi's Anand Vihar railway station. &nbsp;
The Indian Express reported that cartridges were being taken to Lucknow and Jaunpur and that the police probe is on to nab the main accused.

Sardar Udham murdered O`Dwyer as he and his troops cruelly killed hundreds of people in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. The film, which starred Vicky Kaushal in titular role, won him the IIFA Award for Best Actor.

The biographical war film narrates the story of Param Vir Chakra awardee Captain Vikram Batra. The Indian soldier became a household name during the 1999 Kargil War as he chased the Pakistani soldiers out of Indian Territory with his unflinching courage. The film starred Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in lead roles.
Bhuj: The Pride of India (2021)
The film, starring Ajay Devgn, is set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. It is about Indian Air Force Squadron leader Vijay Karnik, then in-charge of the Bhuj Air Force Base, who with the help of 300 local women, reconstructed the damaged landing strip in 72 hours.

The biographical action film is based on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who fought against the terrorists during the 2008 attacks at Mumbai’s Taj Palace Hotel and was eventually killed. Adivi Sesh, Prakash Raj, Sobhita Dhulipala played the lead role in the film, which was produced by actor Mahesh Babu under his studio G. Mahesh Babu Entertainment, in a collaboration with Sony Pictures International Productions and A+S Movies.

The action-thriller, directed by Meghna Gulzar, featured Alia Bhatt as an undercover RAW agent, Sehmat Khan. An adaptation of Harinder Sikka's novel ‘Calling Sehmat’, the film narrates the story of Indian Research and Analysis Wing agent who is married into a family of military officers in Pakistan to get valuable information to India.

The Vicky Kaushal and Yami Gautam starrer is based on the 2016 surgical strike executed by the Indian Army on suspected militants who attacked an army base in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. The film had a successful run in theatres for over 10 weeks across India and it went on to become the 10th highest grossing Hindi film in history.

Starring Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra, the film is based on a true story of the Battle of Saragarhi in which an army of 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans in 1897.

As India prepares to celebrate 75 years of independence, the union government has amended the set of rules that govern hoisting of the tricolour to allow the flag to fly event after sunset. 
The government amended the Flag Code of India, 2002 to allow the national flag to be flown at day and night if it has been hoisted in the open or on the house of a member of the public. 
Earlier, the tricolour is allowed to be flown from sun rise to sun set, irrespective of weather conditions.
The move comes as the government prepares to launch a 'Har Ghar Tiranga' from August 13 to 15 as part of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'.
In a letter to secretaries of all central ministries and departments, union home secretary Ajay Bhalla said the display, hoisting and use of the Indian national flag is governed by the Flag Code of India, 2002 and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
The Flag Code of India, 2002 has been further amended through an order on July, 20, 2022 and clause (xi) of paragraph 2.2 of Part-II of the Flag Code of India, 2002 shall now be read as under:- (xi) "where the Flag is displayed in open or displayed on the house of a member of public, it may be flown day and night".

The home secretary also enclosed with his letter the salient features of the Flag Code including the changes made on December, 30, 2021 and July 20, 2022 and the frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the use and display of the national flag.

Yadav who was in Bangalore posted an image on his Instagram account on Sunday and captioned it as 'See you soon Caribbean'Yadav who was supposed to play in the South Africa series had suffered a blow in the hand. He was also named for the West Indies T20I series. However, his place on the team was subjected to his fitness. He has now cleared his fitness test at the NCA and will make a comeback against the Windies. In the shortest format of the game, Kuldeep Yadav boasts of 41 wickets in 23 innings that he has played against West Indies.
